The Annual READINGS FOR THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE COSS (A) First Reading - (Numbers 21:4-9) – When the complaining Jews were bitten by snake in the desert, they were healed by gazing on a bronze serpent lifted on a pole. Second Reading – (Philippians 2:6-11) – Jesus emptied himself of his divinity and took the form of a slave, obedient unto death. Therefore, God highly exalted him and gave him a name above every other name. Gospel – (John 3:13-17) – As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up. Today the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross takes over from the Liturgy of the Ordinary Sunday. 24th The Feast has its origin in the rejoicing of the Church of Jerusalem when in the mid4th century St Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, discovered the piece of wood believed to be part of Our Lord’s Cross. In due time it came to be the great celebration of the mystery of the Cross: Jesus, by submitting himself to the most degrading form of execution, reserved to slaves, rebels and non-Roman criminals, was raised in glory and brought us all the promise of salvation. Powerful passages from Old and New Testaments help us contemplate the Cross, implement of death and now emblem of glory. CALENDAR – The most important feast of the week is that of the Triumph of the Cross (see above). The discovery of the True Cross is dated to 14 September 320. On13 September 335 the churches on Calvary were dedicated and the cross that St Helena discovered was venerated there the next day. The annual commemoration of that event has been celebrated since, in praise of the redemption won for us by Christ. Associated with this is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on Monday. The early Scottish Saint Mirin, patron of Paisley is also celebrated on Monday. On Tuesday we honour our own St Ninian, the great evangeliser of southern Scotland from his base at Whithorn. The optional memorial of St. Robert Bellarmine, Jesuit, Cardinal and great Counter Reformation defender of the Faith is celebrated on Wednesday. Friday is the optional memorial of St Januarius, Bishop and Martyr, a 4th century Southern Italian saint most remembered for the strange phenomenon of the liquefaction of a relic said to be his blood. OCTOBER DEVOTIONS – October is the month of the Holy Rosary and we remind you that the rosary will be prayed in St Cadoc’s at 9.40am every morning (MON-SAT). There is a plenary indulgence for recitation of the Rosary in church, family or pious association. Vocation Mass for the Diocese of Motherwell will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral, Motherwell, this coming Monday 15th September 2014 at 7.30pm. You are encouraged to attend to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life as well as to offer prayerful support to our eleven diocesan seminarians as they return to their studies in Rome and Birmingham. CHURCH BUILDING FUND COLLECTION – Last Sunday’s Second Collection for the support of the Church Building Fund realised £656.00. Thank you for your generous contribution. May God reward you for your kindness. PASTORAL PLANNING MEETING – The next full parish pastoral council meeting will take place on Tuesday, 23rd September 2014, at 7pm. DIAMOND JUBILEE – The 60th Anniversary of the opening of St. Cadoc’s Parish Church is coming up in November. To mark this occasion a special Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Joseph Toal on Thursday, 13th November at 7pm. It is hoped that some former priests of St. Cadoc’s will be able to concelebrate with the Bishop. There will be a light buffet served in St. Cadoc’s primary school hall afterwards, to which all parishioners are cordially invited. HOLY HOUR IN ST. COLUMBKILLE’S – We are invited for the holy hour which will take place in St Columbkille’s Church, Rutherglen, to pray for vocations from 7-8pm on Friday 19th 2014. Please make an effort to attend this event and increase your prayers that more young people may respond to the call of Christ. CHILDREN’S LITURGY – celebrated every Sunday at 10am Mass (unless rescheduled). Children join our adult catechists to pray and hear the Word of God and share their faith in a way that is easy for them to understand. We thank the volunteers who organise the Liturgy for our children and we are still looking for new people to volunteer. 400 CLUB WINNER – Deborah Watson; Winning Agent: Jackie Reilly. INCOME TAX REBATE SYSTEM (GIFT-AID) - If you are a tax payer, normally come to Church, and are prepared to put your money offering in a confidential numbered envelope (or pay by Standing order) and sign a simple form, then the parish can (at no cost to yourself) reclaim the tax you have already paid on that offering. We are looking for more parishioners to join the 70 who have signed up. Please think about it; there are always forms available in the Porch.
