da Pousada são
o Claustro, o mobiliário do século
XVI e XVII e as maravilhosas
receitas conventuais.
Num convento do século XVI, no centro histórico de Vila
Viçosa, encontramos a Pousada D. João IV.
O Real Convento das Chagas de Cristo foi erigido em 1514 por
D. Jaime, 4º Duque de Bragança, para Panteão das Senhoras
da Casa de Bragança e também para acolher as suas filhas,
nascidas do seu segundo casamento, que não pudessem casar
condignamente. Personagens ilustres da História, como D. Nuno
Álvares Pereira, os Duques de Bragança, S. Tomé e a pintora
Cecília Espírito Santo marcaram lá presença. Conta a lenda
que a última Madre Superiora ainda lá está, persistente, a zelar
pelo Convento.
Na Pousada, inaugurada em 1996, todos os quartos são diferentes
e com uma decoração muito própria, muitos deles com vista para
o jardim e outros reconstruídos nos antigos retiros e oratórios.
Para reuniões ou eventos, a Pousada disponibiliza 5 salas
distintas, como a “Sala do Capítulo” ou a “Sala Beija Mão”,
com serviço completo e sempre atencioso.

In a 16th century convent, in the historical center of Vila Viçosa,
we find the Pousada D. João IV.
The “Real Convento das Chagas de Cristo” was erected in 1514
by D. Jaime, fourth Duke of Bragança, with the aim of serving
as a Pantheon for the ladies from the House of Bragança and
his daughters born to his second marriage if they could not
marry with honor. Illustrious historical characters, like D. Nuno
Álvares Pereira, the Dukes of Bragança, S. Tomé and the painter
Cecília Espírito Santo left their mark here. According to legend,
the last Mother Superior still lives in the convent, persistently
taking care of the convent.
The Pousada, inaugurated in 1996, all its rooms are different with
their own decoration, many of them with views onto the gardens,
and others reconstructed from the former retreats and oratories.
The Pousada has 5 different rooms for meetings or events, like
the “Sala do Capítulo” and the “Sala Beija Mão”; all meeting
rooms are fully equipped and offer an invariably helpful service.

especialidades como a Sopa de Beterraba e Abóbora, o tradicional prato
de Bacalhau Confitado em Azeite, com Migas de Batata e Tomate a acompanhar
ou o Borrego Assado à Alentejana. E, claro, é imperativo que não abandone a mesa
sem experimentar a extraordinária sobremesa, o Manjar das Chagas.
The D. Carlos Restaurant is the ideal spot to socialize while enjoying not only
the excellent cuisine of the Alentejo region but also a wide range of conventual tastes.
With its wooden ceiling and large windows facing to a courtyard of pomegranates,
the restaurant offers friendly atmosphere with an excellent service with the
hospitality of the Alentejo to its guests.
Start with the best cheeses and smoked sausages boards, and then proceed to such
specialities as the “Sopa de Beterraba e Abóbora” (Beetroot and Pumpkin Soup),
the traditional Cod Confit in Olive Oil with Potatoes and Tomatoes or the Roasted
Lamb. You should not leave the table without tasting the extraordinary dessert,
the “Manjar das Chagas”.

Located in the Alto Alentejo, between Elvas, Borba
and Redondo, Vila Viçosa is a quiet village full of history
and attractive activities.
It is the hometown of the famous and passionate poetess
Florbela Espanca and a land of churches, monasteries, chapels,
hermitages and convents. It is also internationally known for
the abundant marble quarries in the region. In 1461, it became
part of the Dukedom of Bragança, and in 1502, begun the
construction of the “Paço Ducal” (Ducal Palace), the most
emblematic monument of Vila Viçosa.
From visits to innumerable museums and monuments to balloon
rides, discover the secrets and the legends of this region known
as the “Princess of Alentejo”.

Espanca, Vila Viçosa é terra de igrejas, mosteiros, capelas,

pela abundância de mármore que existe na região. Em 1461,
passou a fazer parte do Ducado de Bragança e, em 1502,
dá-se início à construção do Paço Ducal, o mais emblemático
monumento da cidade.

From varied pedestrian walks to exciting hot-air balloon flights,
you can appreciate the fabulous landscape of plains.
One of the most interesting activities in Vila Viçosa municipality
is birdwatching; some of the most endangered species live here,
like the Bonelli’s Eagle, the Black Stork and the Spoonbill.
Set aside an afternoon to get to know the wine cellars and have
a walk in the country. As an alternative, you can also drive to the
nearby city of Évora, a few kilometres away.
“Romarias” (pilgrimages) are the right occasion for festivities,
tradition, gastronomy and guaranteed entertainment. If you have
the chance, see the”Romaria do Santuário de Nossa Senhora
da Boa Nova”, where you will find all the customs and the true
essence of Alentejo Culture.

no que diz respeito a dotes e doações reais.
Os museus e monumentos no centro da cidade, o Arquivo
Histórico Municipal e a Reserva Natural das Pedreiras
de Mármore perfazem um roteiro cultural encantador que não
vai querer perder. O Convento das Chagas de Cristo é uma jóia
de história, crenças e lendas. O Castelo Medieval remonta
à época de conquistas e reconquistas de Cristãos e Mouros
na Península Ibérica. O Palácio Ducal é o ex-líbris de Vila
Viçosa. Semelhante ao Terreiro do Paço em Lisboa, a fachada
é inteiramente revestida a mármore e inspirada na arquitectura
italiana renascentista. No interior, estão guardadas preciosas
colecções de arte pertencentes a D. Manuel II, que vale
a pena conhecer.
Vila Viçosa has always been regarded as the jewel of the Alentejo
considering the royal endowments and donations.
Themuseums and monuments in the city centre, the Historic
Municipal Archive and the Marble Quarries Natural Reserve are
a charming cultural route no guest should miss. The “Chagas
de Cristo” Convent is a jewel of history, beliefs and legends.
The Medieval Castle was erected when the Christians were
fighting against the Muslims on the Peninsula, but the Ducal
Palace is the most emblematic monument of Vila Viçosa.
Similarly to the “Terreiro do Paço” in Lisbon, its façade is totally
covered with marble and inspired by the Italian Renaissance
style. In its interior, precious art collections once belonging
to King D. Manuel II are exhibited and are truly worth visiting.
