This issue of Revista R comes in the wake of the appearance of a new entity in the RECER Group: the Ceramics Division. The companies in the RECER Group that manufacture and market ceramics products (Recer, Gresco, Solcer and Modicer) now constitute our Ceramics Division. By creating this Division, we want to make the best possible use of the synergies and complementarities of these firms, so that we can offer our customers an ever-improving service. An executive committee, supervised by the relevant boards of directors, has been set up to manage the Ceramics Division. Its remit is to continue our almost four decades of corporate history. Today, we are a multinational organisation with operations in over 50 countries across five continents. Respecting the past, we are working in the present to provide for the future. This could also be the cover theme of this edition, which draws its inspiration from the recently announced application of Portuguese tiles to be considered UNESCO World Heritage. Besides this topic, I would like to invite you to discover in the pages that follow other items of news, comments and information that we have assembled for you. The Ceramics Division of Recer Investimentos, SGPS, was set up in 2014 and includes four companies from the areas of structural ceramics and finishing tiles: Recer, Gresco, Solcer and Modicer. It aims to be a benchmark player in the sector, both in Portugal and abroad, by supplying supplementary products. It plans to achieve this goal by committing to diversity/complementarity (several production units able to satisfy different markets and segments), to know-how (technical staff of the highest calibre in international terms, with renewed capacity to train new teams), to innovation (constant investment in R&D and strategic partnerships for technological development), to international experience (operating in over 50 countries) and to synergies (implementing best practice and experiences of each firm to invigorate the Ceramics Division). 6 CERAMIC ROUTE O OUTDOOR EM AZULEJO ‘OUTDOOR’ IN TILES E m Portugal e em diversos países, sobretudo nos de maior tradição azulejar, houve um tempo em que as instituições de prestígio davam preferência ao azulejo como suporte publicitário. Advertising tiles are true works of art, remarkable for the singularity of the lines. In Portugal, as in other countries, particularly those with a strong tradition of tiles, there was a time when prestigious institutions used tiles as a substrate for advertising. Somewhat grander and longer-lasting, advertising tiles reached their peak in the same period as the Art Nouveau movement, which was born in the 19th century. Shops ordered special hand-painted tiles to compose signs for their façades. Industries had their logos reproduced on tiles. These brands saw tile panels as the ideal outdoor medium to speak to their customers. Along with their decorative and figurative calling, greatly influenced by the bright colours of that artistic movement and, later, by Art Deco, tiles gained another, more pragmatic, dimension. Many of them have lasted until today and such murals of history are true works of art, remarkable for the singularity of the lines. For decades, advertising tiles - then seen as a sign of modernity and today virtually cast into oblivion - brought colour and life to all sorts of walls and attracted customers, to the advantage of those who invested in their artistic potential. Just as the graphic solutions found in many different countries varied greatly, so their nature and purpose were equally disparate. On shop fronts, some simply bore the name of the establishment. Others were just like postcards, illustrating a time, and they would also bear the date the establishment was founded, the name of the founder and the products também a data de fundação, o nome do fundador e os produtos comercializados, que contracenavam com figuras que pretendiam simultaneamente humanizar o painel e apelar ao consumo. In Porto, for instance, two of the more typical shop fronts with advertising tiles belong to Depósito de Sola e Cabedais Adriano Vieira da Silva Lima, Lda, on Rua do Atneu Comercial do Porto and the grocery store A Pérola do Bolhão on Rua Formosa. Founded in 1917, in front of the Bolhão Market, this traditional grocery store is renowned for its salt cod and for freshly ground coffee. It has an Art Nouveau front covered with tiles with references to the Spice Route. In Porto and elsewhere in Portugal, small industries and traders, aware of the fashions at the end of the 19th century and early years of the 20th century and under the impetus of the economic and social development of the period, identified with the aesthetic of Art Nouveau and used it to shed light on new social mores and a certain urbanness. Tiles, including those used for advertising, were the vehicle by which ordinary façades were given colour. In Lisbon, at the corner of Avenida Visconde Valmor and Avenida 5 de Outubro, the tile panels of the Bola Cheia café, a former tea room and café, as its advertising chart tells us, are unique examples of the Art Nouveau style in a work dated 1912, by A. 9 Dean, that depicts figures inspired by eastern influences. In Figueira da Foz’s Engenheiro Silva Market there are tile panels that actually promote ceramic tiles. Using advertising tiles, which are also self-promotion, the Fábrica de Louça de Sacavém is thus spreading the word about its fine decorative tiles, in the Art Deco style. The outer walls of the market are also decorated with small panels advertising Carvalhelhos mineral water. Nitrato do Chile fertiliser is another brand advertised on tiles in most parts of the country. Others, however, like Triunfo biscuits in their old factory in Coimbra, prefer to use this medium to display their logo. But even Pan Even today, on the Avenida da Bélgica in Viseu, the Caramulo Museum is advertised on a tile panel that portrays one of the outstanding vehicles in its collection: an 1899 Peugeot, believed to be the first car to enter Portugal. American, the legendary American airline company installed an advertising panel here, in Aveiro (Costa do Valado, EN335), alluding to the heyday of its intercontinental flights. Even today, on the Avenida da Bélgica in Viseu, the Caramulo Museum is advertised on a tile panel that portrays one of the outstanding vehicles in its collection: an 1899 Peugeot, believed to be the first car to enter Portugal. In some countries, tyre manufacturers are among the keenest fans of using tiles to advertise. In Portugal you can still see plenty of Mabor and Firestone panels in various places, though they are several decades old. In the head office of the French company, Michelin, advertising panels of scenes with motorcyclists help to convey the then slogan of the brand: Michelin tyres absorb obstacles - clearly wine inspired. What all these examples show is that tiles, in addition to being entrenched as a decorative element in the building industry, are much more than one of its sacrosanct parts. Tiles have followed the tastes of each era, as a complement, going hand in hand with design, becoming an integral part of the architectural style of each period, but even more, they have been used in original ways, on more practical quests than we see for them today! 10 FLASH DE VITÓRIA EM VITÓRIA FROM VICTORY TO VICTORY A GLÓRIA É PARTICIPAR THE GLORY LIES IN TAKING PART A equipa de atletismo da Adercus – Recer soma vitórias e lugares de destaque nos últimos meses. The Adercus - Recer athletics team has been piling up victories and leading positions in the last few months. It was on the podium in the female collective classification for the National Road Race. It became Portuguese vice-champion in the short cross-country and was third in the national long cross-country race. Their athlete Sara Carvalho, meanwhile, won the XV Carrera Grutear in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. Rivalry remained outside the four lines and was replaced by fellowship. The result, in fact, is of little or no interest. As far as Francisco Novais, the director-shareholder of Franova, is concerned, whether the football match between his employees against those of Recer in Oliveira do Bairro or the one, in Guimarães, set up the rematch, “they served to improve understanding and sharing between customer and supplier and so enhance the everyday relations”. The spirit has invariably been the same with other distributors. “It was a day well spent. We chatted, played, shared experiences... It was great. Above all, we cemented our relationship and strengthened bonds”, says Rui Carreira, director of Macolusa, whose employees took part in exactly the same sort of match. “Actually, the outcome of the games doesn’t matter. The glory is simply in being there”, says Daniel Santos, Recer’s head of Communication and Image. Although the Portuguese owe the technique of tile production to the Arab world (azuleicha, in Arabic, means “polished stone”), Recer now has the privilege of exporting its ceramic wares to Lebanon, now also through the company Tarik Shibly Est. General Trading. From Tyr, Tarik Shibly, the owner of this family firm based on the marketing of construction materials, is proud today to be a leading distributor on the Arab market. A few days after opening its second showroom in the capital, Beirut, he draws attention to the partnership with Recer. “Recer makes very high quality products that are easily distinguishable from local production in both their design and their technical features, and they are greatly appreciated by our kind of client”, explains the owner. ENRIQUECER CONHECIMENTOS ENHANCING KNOWLEDGE As part of complementary extra-curricular activities, several pupils of the schools making up the School Grouping of Rio Novo do Príncipe, in Cacia, visited Recer twice in six months. Students from the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon also paid a visit to Recer recently. The showroom in Recer’s headquarters, where they saw ceramic products in environments similar to real-life ones, and Modicer, the plant that produces many of the items that had already been appreciated as exhibits, both prompted comments that were related to interdisciplinary learning, in all cases. A tile produced by Recer was the trophy presented by the seventh Building Awards on 2 October 2014 for the best works built over the past eighteen months and to distinguish personalities, companies and works. This tile is “a trial item, in which structural rigidity and organic substance unite and inter-mingle, creating an aesthetic moment”, explained Fernando Simões, Recer’s chief R&D designer, at the event sponsored by Jornal Construir and the magazine Anteprojectos. At the end of September, Gueudry Constructions, the leading constructor in Normandy, opened the Espace Habitat in Trait, and displayed a number of lines of Recer ceramics in its 600 m2 of space. Recer was involved in its conception and, as Mário Aguiar, the Company’s area manager explains, “What this space embodies is a commercial partnership that goes beyond the quality-price relationship. It is a union of values and goals”. This was an investment of several hundred thousand euros to give customers the chance to see all the stages of their home-build project. da República Portuguesa acolheu, nos jardins do Palácio de Belém, uma apresentação da iniciativa “Portugal Sou Eu”, que promoveu uma mostra representativa dos produtos portugueses qualificados com aquele selo. On 5 October last year, as part of the celebrations of the establishment of the republic, the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic hosted a presentation of the Portugal Sou Eu [literally, Portugal is Me] initiative in the grounds of the Belem Palace, promoting a representative sample of Portuguese products bearing this stamp. Recer tiles were presented to His Excellency, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva, by the head of marketing, Liliana Rodrigues. At the 12 edition of Projekta, the biggest construction, public works, urbanism and architecture fair in Angola, Recer welcomed at its stand a visit from Kyala Gabriel, the Secretary of State for Industry, from Euclides Manuel de Carvalho, the Secretary of State for Construction. Held in the facilities of the International Fair of Luanda, Projekta is by far the best platform for establishing partnerships, making new contacts and forging new business deals. In partnership with the distributor Sodimac Ceram Square, Recer was at MEDIBAT, the Tunisian fair for the construction industry, from 4 to 7 March. Organised by the Sfax Chamber of Trade and Industry, the 13th edition of this event was confirmed as a focus of attraction for major players in the sector, including in the area of innovation, as well as being an excellent place to meet with influential international delegations, architects and promoters of major projects. “This is what justifies our joint presence”, says Zied Hammami, manager of Sodimac Ceram Square. DE NICE PARA O MERCADO FRANCÊS FROM NICE TO THE FRENCH MARKET e Way a mais de 200 representantes de outros tantos pontos de venda do grupo Careso, que tem também, desde o segundo semestre de 2014, um novo presidente, Olivier Bléger. Recer took part in the Ateliers du Commerce Careso for the fifth year in a row. It took place at the end of May in Nice, France. In the Palais des Congrès, Recer presented its Composit, Quartz Wood, True and Way series to over 200 representatives from the many other sales outlets of the Careso group, which has also had a new chairman, Olivier Bleger, since the second half of 2014. Recer was invited by its French partner Brossette, from the Point P group, to attend the 8th edition of NOVIBAT, a trade fair in the Rhônes-Alpes region dedicated to the new generation of construction technologies. Visitors to the Recer stand at the fair showed most interest in the series whose features made them suitable for use in heavy traffic areas. The event attracted more than 20 000 trade visitors. Following the application of Portuguese tiles to be considered UNESCO Heritage of Humanity - which is being drawn up by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage in partnership with the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering and the UNESCO National Commission / Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Recer is introducing the TRIPLEX series. It is inspired by the art of tile-making of old and is designed to create deeply trendy environments in modern, cosmopolitan contexts. The three designs revisit the traditional glazed tiles of various famous Portuguese palaces: Marquês de Fronteira, Valverde and Real do Bussaco. The three colours and interplay of glossy/matt bridge the gap between the past and the present and lend TRIPLEX a contemporary style that is ideal for the interiors of homes and hotels. The name comes from the Arabic and gained tradition in Portuguese lands under the influence of the Hispanic-Moorish tiles made in Andalusia. These tiles have been produced in Portugal for over 500 years and they are unique in being both a decorative and architectural element. They covered the walls of churches and palaces and changed the urban landscape, as we have shown for 15 years in our signature Ceramic Route. Glazed tiles have gained prominence internationally, and serve as a source of inspiration to many couturiers and designers. A few months ago, the village of Vale de Papas, in the typically Portuguese parish of Ramires, in Cinfães, tripled its population of scarcely more than 30 residents. This small population was joined by 60 volunteers, most of them students of architecture and civil construction from Portugal, Spain and Italy, who were taking part in the Terra Amada initiative to restore rural facilities and to improve homes and public areas. With the help of experienced master builders, specialists and more than 30 companies – among them Recer, which provided the necessary construction materials – for a few days the village was turned into a worksite-school. In 2013, this project carried out a pilot-scheme in the village of Covas do Monte, in São Pedro do Sul, where seven buildings and one public area were refurbished. The coordinator of the initiative, Ana Pinho, a lecturer on the architecture course at the Catholic University of Viseu, explained in public statements that the Vale de Papas scheme was more ambitious. “From one granary we have moved to four, from two homes to three, from two conservation O projecto Terra Amada Organizada pelo Curso de Arquitectura da Universidade Católica de Viseu, a iniciativa Terra Amada visa o voluntariado de estudantes orientado para a conservação e a reabilitação de aldeias rurais do interior português. But, above all, we have added a very important dimension, that of creating and supporting the development of economic activities”. In the village of Vale de Papas, where residents live from subsistence farming and animal husbandry, mainly the arouquesa cattle (a breed from the district of Arouca), this project will help some inhabitants have a bathroom for the first time. Recer took great pleasure in the restoration of three homes: that of Américo and Maria do Céu, that of Manuel and Rosa and the Home/Workshop of Cristina Cardoso, who is a craftswoman. Aged 26, she is one of the few young people in the village and she makes miniatures of the thatched roofed houses typical of the area. The village Vale de Papas is located in the upland area of Serra de Montemuro. In appearance it is still very much as it was originally, with its thatched-roof houses built in yellow granite. With 14 years of activity behind it, Bilden, which operates in the interior design market, sets out to give a distinctive and customised response in a rapidly changing sector, so Marcelo Rodrigues, the architect, says. The multi-disciplinary team, which undertakes specific interventions in single rooms (kitchens and bathrooms) or complete turnkey renovations, increasingly for private customers. It has recommended a number of RECER tile series, for all kinds of environments and decorative styles. The Twenties series was used in the A home with charm [Um Casa com Graça]. According to interior designer Cláudia Laranjeira, “It really suited the overall concept of the space, a typical neighbourhood house where the goal was to keep the original identity but give it a more cheerful and modern touch”. In the kitchen and bathroom, according to Marcelo Rodrigues, an environment was achieved that emphasises brightness: “To contrast with the purity of the whites and give the rooms character, it was decided to apply the tiles randomly on key elements such as the counter-top in the kitchen and the floor of the bathroom”. In the House Renovation [Requalificação de Moradia] task, Bilden tried to give a unique identity to the outside and inside by means of a range of tones and textures that would link the beauty of the natural stones to the earth colours. “Lava porcelain tiles were used for the outside paving, which works really well with the natural stone occurring in the various exterior finishes. Inside, the choice was for notes that would respect this language, like laying Magma porcelain tiles around the hearth, in the living room”, the Bilden team explain. And in the Sophisticated Elegance [Elegância Sofisticada] 19 MARCELO RODRIGUES Arquitecto aposta na projecção de interiores personalizados Architect focuses on the projection of customised interiors Já no projecto “Elegância Sofisticada”, a Bilden procura conjugar o glamour dos negros aquecidos com nuances de madeiras e tons dourados. «Nos banhos, por exemplo, o porcelânico Mystic enquadrou-se na energia e força do conceito, dando mais impacto e requinte ao espaço», revelam a designer e o arquitecto, para quem a Recer «é uma marca em linha com as tendências actuais, em termos de cores e texturas, e, mercê da sua ampla oferta, muito adaptada a diferentes nichos de clientes». project, Bilden is trying to combine the glamour of the warm blacks with hints of wood and golden tones. “In the bathrooms, for example, Mystic porcelain tiles are just right for the energy and power of the concept and give more impact and refinement to the space”, the designer and architect say. They see Recer as “a brand in touch with today’s trends in terms of colour and texture and, thanks to their extensive range, it is very well adapted to different customer niches”. 20 DESTAK COMPOSIT EM PROFUNDA RELAÇÃO COM A NATUREZA IN A DEEP RELATIONSHIP WITH NATURE Composit é um diálogo com a natureza resultante das sobreposições de diversos materiais. Those who don’t believe that perfection can be born out of chaos will have to think again. Inspired by a time of unpredictable ceramics production, the TRUE series amounts to the birth of ceramics aesthetics in a pure state. It reproduces the unexpected beauty of the old tin glazes and colours that, in the times of wood-fired kilns, derived from the oxides, chromates and carbonates of various metals such as cobalt, copper, manganese, iron, selenium, nickel and lead. Created by designer Maria Vilhena and executed by Obraprima, a construction company based in the same city, the aim of the plan was to bear witness to the longevity of the company. The designer explained that “to achieve this, the Portuguese tile was used in the most stylised way, alongside viroc – imitation stressed/aged concrete”. IT REALLY IS A PORTUGUESE HOME (CASA PORTUGUESA)! The Portuguese diva of fado, Amália Rodrigues, sang this song (Uma casa portuguesa) - thousands of times, but contrary to its words, which speak of the destiny of being humble, the project of the same name - A Portuguese Home - the first unit of which was opened at the end of 2014 brings together and displays the finest Portuguese products 29 A série Purple Stone Cairo 30x60 foi aplicada no pavimento da cozinha, sala, hall e pátio exterior, enquanto a Metallic Glamour Preto decorou os banhos. The project intended to be an anthem to the invigoration of the output of Portuguese companies and their talent and ability to innovate, alongside national culture. Rotunda - Hóstia Roundabout - Host The Congregation of the Religious Servants of the Blessed Eucharist and the Mother of God opened the Domus Mater Dei in Fátima. This is an important project that has two facets: it provides a home for the sisters and a residence for the elderly members of the local community. The building was designed by the architect António Ferreira and its outstanding feature is a path of light that extends from the chapel’s altar to the roundabout outside; it symbolises a host, the core aspect of the communion, which is the ultimate objective of the Eucharist. Decorated with Recer tiles, 120 cmx60 cm, this roundabout thus has three purposes: to control the accesses, to embellish the area around the building (it includes a fountain), and to guide visitors to the centrality of Christian life - the sacrament of the Eucharist. “This series was best suited to fulfil the intention, because of the aesthetics, the finish, the colour and the assurance of durability, even under exposure to the outdoors”, António Ferreira tells us. 32 DOMUS UMA RESPOSTA GLOBAL A GLOBAL RESPONSE O que poderá responder melhor a uma profusão, à escala global, de gostos e desafios variados no âmbito da cerâmica de acabamento? Recer is committing to a new dialogue strategy focused on those who recommend its products and gauge the level their acceptance, even before they get to market: preview events. Liliana Rodrigues, head of marketing, explains how this new tool works. 37 target, which is a great asset for us. They are challenging, positively non-conformist, and creative. This is the dynamic that drives our ability to innovate: it’s a provocation to creativity and to the capacity to surprise. Where and when will the next events take place? What topic will be in the spotlight? As in last May, the Lisbon showroom will regularly host new and very eclectic previews that will let the Recer and Gresco brands present innovative proposals. What prompted Recer to lead the way in bringing this preview concept to the world of finishing tiles? The preview concept represents a key strand in the modus operandi of Recer: building up a partnership relation with our clients and those who recommend the use of our products. It’s a time of pre-presentation, even joint creation, that aims to meet the needs and aspirations of the market most effectively. What are the gains from this kind of pre-presentation, in practice? At previews we create the new products together. At Recer, we study and create and trend, introduce it, then we listen to our clients and incorporate their feedback in the series that are still at the development stage. The creative process thus gains new input from highly qualified players, which strengthens the expertise of the R&D team. What have they contrived and how did the first events in Lisbon and Paris go? We launched this new concept in Lisbon in May last year, and it was so successful that we replicated it in our Paris showroom a few months later. The team creating the new series were at the first event, and they explained these series to the architects and clients present. It was a richly rewarding dialogue. The R&D team took the know-how of these opinion leaders on board and incorporated their views into the series presented and in the new ones that are presently under development. What was the feedback from the invited architects and other recommenders? INOVAR INNOVATE OR... It seems as if there are no real alternatives to innovation as the main competitive strategy for companies today. While innovating means producing something new or using a new process, so each innovative step we take lets us offer the market a better or more useful product or service than its predecessors or competitors. Thus, better prepared to meet the more stringent demands of customers and, as a result, more competitive. The pressure to innovate is driven by substantial and swift technical progress, the international approach of markets that has intensified the competition, and the demand for solutions that are increasingly more appropriate to individual cultures. DELFIM COSTA Innovating, then, means changing to respond better to the world in which we live. The remarkable and relentless technological innovation that the ceramics industry has been experiencing in the past twenty years has enable if to introduce new products which combine excellent design and outstanding technical performance. Ceramic products continue to beat many natural cladding materials, which are hard to apply and maintain and are often too sensitive and delicate, considering how we want to use them. These included many kinds of stone, textiles, wood and cement. At Recer, innovation is at the very heart of our culture. We have often broken new ground in the almost 40 years of our existence. Pioneers in introducing rectified monoporosa (single-fired) wall tiles in large formats, in adopting digital printing technology on the glazing lines, in design by bringing out signature collections of tiles, in using the double loaded technique for porcelain tile production, in the concept of eco-ceramics... At the moment we are involved in developing products with self-cleaning surfaces and using nano- and micro-particles, which shows that the finishing tiles industry is constantly being reinvented. We export nearly 67% of our output to 50 countries. Only a culture underpinned by permanent innovation and an appeal to the creative participation of every employee allows us to continue along the path of internationalisation, in such a sustained manner. 39 DESCUBRA COMO A CIÊNCIA PODE CRIAR ARTE.
