I have always heard people say “do not meddle where you are
not called” and this applies perfectly to those who never or
hardly enter the church, but who complaint about a lot of
things. For example, those who regret that the new building
that replaced the former convent blocks the visibility of our
church building, which reveals they are like the Pharisees who
were only concerned about the external appearance of people.
My answer is: the beauty of the church is inside the church,
just like the beauty of the person is in the heart, not the face.
There are many people who walk in front of our church
several times a week and some that do it daily, but never enter
the church and never attend our services. I am curious to know
if when they die, their family members or friends will carry
them inside the church, obviously against their will because
while living they didn’t want to do it. And then to pray the
rosary they never prayed and celebrate Mass for a dead body
while the living one freely refused to attend. I hope their
Catholic family members make them realize the importance of
being part of a community of faith, unless their faith is
something irrelevant in which case all we can do is pray for
their return to the paternal home before dying.
How about those who do not attend church but want to give
their opinion about church matters, like the ones who have
expressed to my friend Almeirindo that he should not buy
food or cook in the parish house. Firstly, Almeirindo does not
buy all the food, as some have implied. If he buys some, it is
only fair because he also eats, and so we both buy as needed
and in a fair way. When cooking for him and for me, it is my
kitchen that is being used, my utensils, my water, my gas, my
electricity and so on. He was not asked or forced to do it; he
chose to and the bottom line is that if he is a blessings to me –
and he truly is – I am also a blessing for him. What people
don’t know is that, contrary to what is thought, I do not eat or
stay for free in the Parish house: at the end of the year I have
to pay taxes on about $26K that in reality I did not receive but
that represents the housing allowance. But what bothers’
Almeirindo’s friends is not the fact that he cooks and eats at
the Parish kitchen, with me, but the fact that in doing this he is
no longer available for those friends who were always there,
day and night, eating and drinking what he purchased with his
own money and occupying his own space. In those days, they
were not worried about his cooking, because they were fed at
his cost. This is what they miss the most and so the only way
they know how to change things for their convenience is to
insinuate to him that he should spend more time at home with
China, the beautiful and loyal cat he loves a lot. Why can’t
people just mind their own business? Why do they always
have to stick their noses where they should not? My answer is
the same one Fr. Leonel Noia once gave, during a homily, to
some people who seemed to be nosy about the reason he and
Mario Vargas made a trip to Santa Cruz: “None of your
business!”

HOPE AND FORGIVENESS
There were some interesting conceptions of sin
prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the
belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered
disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due
from the Almighty.
Today’s first reading hints at another kind of God.
When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, “The Lord on his
part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a
vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must
have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest
enough to admit their sinfulness!
Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and
forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus,
perhaps the good news would have
been too good to believe, too difficult
to imagine. But there he is in today’s
Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a
sinner and declaring that she is
forgiven because of her great love.
There is hope, then, for the
rest of us sinners, if only we love

Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School

Parish will be inviting our parishioners to an
“Open House” event after Mass on a Sunday
in August. Parishioners will be invited to
tour the newly-completed building with a
student host. The school had wanted to hold
the event on June 26th, but the building will not be ready to
receive visitors by that date. More details to come.

Sempre ouvi dizer "não te metas onde não és chamado", e isto aplicase perfeitamente àqueles que nunca ou mal entram na igreja, mas que
se queixam sobre um monte de coisas. Por exemplo, aqueles que
lamentam que o novo edifício, que substituiu o antigo convento,
esconde parcialmente a nossa igreja, o que revela que são como os
fariseus que só se preocupavam com a aparência externa das pessoas.
A minha resposta é: a beleza da igreja está dentro da igreja, assim
como a beleza da pessoa está no coração, não no rosto.
Há muitas pessoas que passam em frente da nossa igreja várias vezes
por semana e alguns fazem-no diariamente, mas nunca entram na
igreja e nunca participam nos nossos serviços. Estou curioso para
saber se quando morrerem, os seus familiares ou amigos irão trazê-los
à igreja, obviamente contra a sua vontade, porque enquanto viviam
não quiseram fazê-lo. E, depois rezar o rosário que nunca rezaram, e
celebrar a Missa para um corpo morto e que em vida optou livremente
por não participar. Espero que os membros Católicos da sua família
façam com que eles entendam a importância de se fazer parte de uma
comunidade de fé, a não ser que a sua fé seja algo sem importância, e
então a única coisa a fazer é rezar para que regressem à casa paterna
antes de morrer.
Que dizer sobre aqueles que não frequentam a igreja, mas querem dar
a sua opinião sobre os assuntos da igreja, como aqueles que
manifestaram ao meu amigo Almeirindo que ele não deve comprar
alimentos ou cozinhar na casa paroquial. Em primeiro lugar, o
Almeirindo não compra toda a comida, como alguns têm insinuado.
Se ele faz algumas compras, é justo porque ele também come e, por
isso, ambos compramos o necessário e de forma que nenhum fique
prejudicado. Ao cozinhar para ele e para mim, é a minha cozinha que
está a ser utilizada, os meus utensílios, a minha água, o meu gás, a
minha energia eléctrica e assim por diante. Ninguém lhe pediu ou
obrigou a fazê-lo; ele escolheu e o importante é que, se ele é uma
bênção para mim - e é na realidade - eu também sou uma bênção para
ele. O que as pessoas não sabem é que, ao contrário do que se pensa,
eu não como nem habito gratuitamente no Passal: no final do ano eu
tenho que pagar impostos sobre cerca de $ 26K, que na realidade eu
não recebi, mas que representa o subsídio de habitação. Mas o que
incomoda os amigos do Almeirindo não é o facto de que ele cozinha e
come na cozinha do Passal, comigo, mas o facto de que, ao fazer isso,
ele já não está disponível para aqueles amigos que estavam sempre lá,
dia e noite, a comer e a beber o que ele comprava, com o seu próprio
dinheiro, e ocupando o seu próprio espaço. Naquele tempo, eles não
estavam preocupados com o seu cozinhar, porque alimentavam-se à
sua custa. É disto que sentem mais falta e, por isso, a única maneira
que sabem para mudar as coisas para sua conveniência, é insinuar-lhe
que devia passar mais tempo em casa com a China, a gata bonita e leal
que ele muito ama.
Por que é que as pessoas não podem simplesmente cuidar da sua vida?
Por que é que sempre têm que meter o nariz onde não devem? A
minha resposta é a mesma que o Pe. Leonel Noia deu uma vez,
durante uma homilia, a algumas pessoas que pareciam estar curiosas
sobre o motivo pelo qual ele e Mário Vargas fizeram uma viagem até
Santa Cruz: "Não é da vossa conta".

Tema do 11º Domingo do Tempo Comum
A liturgia deste domingo apresenta-nos um Deus de bondade e de
misericórdia, que detesta o pecado, mas ama o pecador; por isso, Ele
multiplica “a fundo perdido” a oferta da salvação. Da descoberta de
um Deus assim, brota o amor e a vontade de vivermos uma vida nova,
integrados na sua família.
A primeira leitura apresenta-nos, através da história do pecador David,
um Deus que não pactua com o pecado; mas que também não
abandona esse pecador que reconhece a sua
falta e aceita o dom da misericórdia.
Na segunda leitura, Paulo garante-nos que a
salvação é um dom gratuito que Deus
oferece, não uma conquista humana. Para ter
acesso a esse dom, não é fundamental
cumprir ritos e viver na observância
escrupulosa das leis; mas é preciso aderir a
Jesus e identificar-se com o Cristo do amor e
da entrega: é isso que conduz à vida plena.
O Evangelho coloca diante dos nossos olhos
a figura de uma “mulher da cidade que era
pecadora” e que vem chorar aos pés de
Jesus. Lucas dá a entender que o amor da
mulher resulta de haver experimentado a misericórdia de Deus. O
dom gratuito do perdão gera amor e vida nova. Deus sabe isso; é por
