Harry Little Found
It was the end of October and I didn’t have a Find of the Month. Then Bruce Allardice came
through and found 1877 player Harry Little. Little was definitely living in St. Louis and this was the only
Harry Little living in St. Louis at that time. He moved to the Chicago area where he died in 1927. It is
rare to find a player from as early as 1877. Great work by Bruce!
Stephen Matthias
I don’t have a whole lot of detail on this particular find. Steve Matthias played for Chicago in the
Union Association in 1884. Jimmy Keenan found an obituary in the Baltimore newspaper on him. It
didn’t mention baseball, but showed that he lived at 1011 North Ann Street in Baltimore. That is
known to be the same address as our ballplayer.
Our Committee in the News
Rich Bozzone was responsible for getting an article published in the Catonsville Times about our
missing player, Tolbert Percy (Jack) Dalton. Dalton played for Brooklyn in 1910 and 1914, Buffalo in the
Federal League in 1914, and Detroit in 1916. The Maryland Missing Persons Network was interested in
the story. The article tells how Dalton left his house to preach a service at his church, the Columbia
Primitive Baptist Church in Burtonsville, Maryland and was never seen again. This occurred on July 4,
1948. None of his siblings, sisters Lena, Lura, and Lola, and brother Pleasie apparently knew what
became of him. (It’s always nice to see parents with a sense of humor.) Hopefully, this publicity will
lead to us finding him.
A Surprise From Ancestry.com
Many of us use the databases at ancestry.com to help us track down missing players. I recently
searched for a missing player and was amazed when one of the databases listed was “Professional
Baseball Players 1876-2004.” It seems that someone from ancestry had been impressed with Sean
Holtz’s baseball-almanac.com website and had approached him about adding his data to their site.
It was turned on during the World Series. It includes death dates and pictures of the players. This might
even spur some genealogical researcher to send in information on Great Uncle Harry Decker or
something like that.
The Magic of Baseball Season
Speaking of Sean Holtz’s website, there is a chart on the website showing number of ballplayer
deaths by month. It has a very interesting pattern. More players died in January, March, November,
and December. In other words, the death rate of former players goes down during baseball season
and up once the season ends.

Two Player Deaths
We need a little help in verifying a couple of player deaths. Joseph Cleary died June 3, 2004
according to the Social Security Death Index. He lived in New York City, but New York is such a big
place, obits don’t appear for most deaths. We need to know where he died.
Also, Victor Cruz was reported by a website called historicbaseball.com to have died September
26, 2004 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. I wrote the folks at the website to ask them their
source, but they never responded. I don’t trust information from unknown sources. If anyone can
track either of these two deaths down, I would appreciate it.
2004 Rookie List
Attached you will find the list of players who made their debuts in 2004. There are 208 total,
bringing our total number of major leaguers to 16,210 with 112 non-playing managers. Here is some
rookie trivia. The oldest rookie was Shingo Takatsu, who was 35. The youngest was B. J. Upton,
debuting at 19. He was the only teenager. (And if you were wondering what B. J. stands for, it was of
course Melvin Emanuel.) The shortest rookie was Josh Labandeira at 5-07. The tallest was Chris Young
at 6-10. The heaviest was also Chris Young, a true behemoth at 6-10 and 260 pounds. The lightest
were Andres Blanco, Maicer Izturis, and Greg Aquino at 150 pounds.
There were several relatives playing. Although 2004 featured the only two players in baseball history
named Majewski, they were not related. However, Scott Hairston is the brother of Jerry Hairston, the
son of Jerry Hairston, and the grandson of Sam Hairston. Adam LaRoche is the son of Dave LaRoche.
Darnell McDonald is the brother of Donzell McDonald. Yadier Molina is the brother of fellow catchers
Bengie and Jose Molina. Sam Narron is the grandson of Sam Narron. Nick Swisher is the son of Steve
Swisher. Maicer Izturis is the brother of Cesar Izturis. Two rookies are engaged to Olympic gold
medalists. Casey Daigle is engaged to softball player Jennie Finch and Matt Treanor is engaged to
beach volleyballist Misty May. Juneau, Alaska became the 48th state capital to claim a major
league player as Chad Bentz hails from Juneau. The only two state capitals to never have a major
leaguer are Bismarck, North Dakota and Montpelier, Vermont.
There were lots of interesting names among the 2004 rookies. We had players named Shingo,
Yadier, Dioner, Yhency, Maicer, Exavier, Kazuo, Akinori, Cha-Seung, Kazuhito, Terrmel, and Merkin.
However, my favorite is Valentino Martin Pascucci.
New Members
Please welcome Carlos Bauer to the committee. Carlos’ address is 6315 Mercer Street, San Diego,
California 92122. His code number will be B2. Also welcome Jimmy Keenan, 65 Pine Street, Glen Rock,
Pennsylvania 17327. Jimmy’s code number will be K2.

A Ransom for Remsen
John (Jack) Remsen had a long major league career. He broke in with the Brooklyn Atlantics in
1872-73, continued with the New York Mutuals in 1874, went to Hartford in 1875-76, played with St.
Louis in 1877, Chicago in 1878-79, Cleveland in 1881, and finished up with Philadelphia and Brooklyn
in 1884. He even led the National League in walks in 1878, amassing 17. Obviously, he was the Barry
Bonds of his day.
He was born in Brooklyn in 1851 and came from a prominent New York family. His parents were
Abraham and Elizabeth Remsen. Abraham died February 8, 1886 and Elizabeth died October 25,
1877. Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. His sister, Diana, married a man with the
fascinating name of Folkert Rapelje Boerum. That name should be familiar to anyone who read
Baseball Fever – Early Baseball in Michigan, Peter Morris’s excellent history. Boerum was a catcher for
the Brooklyn Atlantics from 1857 to 1861. Diana died November 18, 1909 and is also buried in
Greenwood Cemetery alongside her husband, who died November 13, 1903. Jack also had two
brothers, Abraham and William, and a sister, Ann. In 1894, he was working for a theater in
Northampton, Massachusetts. Remsen married a lady from Massachusetts named Emily and was
back in Brooklyn in 1900 working as a conductor. John and Emily had 2 children, Harry and Corine. In
1920, John and Emily were still in New York City, where John was working as a building
superintendent. After that, it is unknown what happened to them. Neither John nor Emily is buried in
Greenwood Cemetery with the other members of his family. Remsen’s prominence and apparent
disappearance makes him our Mystery of the Month.
