GENERAL NOTES
Brazil has one of the planet’s fastest expanding economies and is currently ranked sixth in the world in terms of GDP, ahead of Russia, Italy
and India. As a theatrical market, it has recently experienced a growth spurt, thanks to beginning expansion at exactly the right technological
moment – that is, just as the possibility of digital distribution became a reality. Run-down cinemas could be re-equipped for digital distribution
much more readily if they were not already carrying the cost of recently having had their 35 mm equipment upgraded. Missing out a stage
could likewise give the home-entertainment market an edge, going straight from DVD to VOD without passing through Blu-Ray.
As a result, with the pace set by (among others) the Rain Network, a Brazilian company that has pioneered networks of independent digital
screens, it is now possible for viewers outside the metropolitan areas to see new films much sooner. But, while this has seen Brazilian
attendances increase by 66% between 2008 and 2013 – boosted, it has to be said, by the huge success of the Rio-based crime sequel TROPA DE
ELITE 2 - O INIMIGO AGORA É OUTRO in 2010 – this expansion has now slowed. It has also had little impact on the performance of art films.
For German films, the market seems to be driven by three factors: festival success (DAS WEISSE BAND sold over 80,000 tickets; PINA over
100,000; SOUL KITCHEN and BARBARA 30-35,000); targeting children (URMEL AUS DEM EIS and KONFERENZ DER TIERE did especially well);
and use of the English language in the original release (THE THREE MUSKETEERS; RESIDENT EVIL; PANDORUM; WÜSTENBLUME; CLOUD
ATLAS), so that the film ‘passes for’ American. None of the remaining German-language films crossed the 20,000-ticket barrier, and six had
admission figures of below 10,000.
Technology – and investment in technology – will be the key to the future development of the Brazilian market. In this respect, Brazil has
enormous potential, and it may well be that a development similar to that in the theatrical sector will soon follow. Brazil is a country which has
readily taken to the internet. With Netflix targeting it as one of its growth areas, there is obviously huge potential. But, as indicated by the
current stagnation in the DVD market, where prices remain too high for a viable ‘specialist film’ market to be established, achieving critical
mass will be difficult, and is unlikely to happen immediately.
