assistance of Patricia Villas-Boas, with whom projected many of the ideas
that made possible the implementation of this magazine.
To all my sincere thanks. The realization of my dream was only possible
thanks to all of you.
My friends, it is time to be inspired, separate the materials and start
producing!
Halloween and Christmas are almost upon us!
Happy holidays, and enjoy yourselves until the next edition.

Interview
PanoPraMantas
A visit to the studio:
Light, colour and much sympathy are the main features of this space.
Text and photos by:
Carla Pimentel
Paper and Cotton visited the studio PanoPraMantas
specialized in fabrics and materials for patchwork
and creative sewing, located in downtown of Porto.
This space was created by two friends, who told us
about their project, their sources of inspiration and
their work.
14 Paper and Cotton
“If you have
good bases it
is possible to
create and give
wings to the
imagination”
When and how appeared the idea of your project?
The idea appeared in the end of 2009. At that time
we were attending Patchwork classes with a teacher
that came from France and we perceived how much
it was hard to find fabrics and materials in Porto
(Portugal). From idea to fulfilment of the project
were a few months of ripeness.
What kind of classes/workshops you give in your
studio?
We give patchwork and sewing classes. We reserve
some Saturdays afternoons for workshops. Except in
workshops there is not a pre-defined program. We
try to meet the interests of the students and their
level of knowledge.
In April 2010 we opened our online store
(http://panopramantas.ninhodasideias.com/) and in
October of that year we began classes at the studio.
At that time our fabric stash fit in a wicker basket.
Today exceeds several hundred pieces. Mad? Enough
to. But it was this portion of madness that gave us
wings to advance. Since then we never stopped and
have many projects we dreamed to materialize in
the near future.
Paper and Cotton 15
What are your sources of inspiration?
Paula: Usually books and speciality magazines.
Margarida: Besides books and magazines that Paula
refered, I follow blogs of creators that I particularly
like.
The exhibitions we visit together abroad also
encourage us and give us a vision of what is being
done worldwide.
What are the materials and the colours you like to
use?
P: In patchwork we always use 100% cotton fabrics.
This is the material of choice for this activity. I
have preference for dark tones, autumnal pallete
and classic designs. I also prefer the traditional
patchwork, althoug there are new breeders with very
interesting ideas, with more modern patterns and
works, and more graphics.
M: Of course 100% cotton fabric are mandatory! I like
warm colours and spring tones. Attracts me trying
new techniques and new materials that are always
emerging, such as rulers, fillers, etc., so we can then
present the news to the students and those who visit
us.
What are your preferences when creating?
What we really like to do is large quilts of “true”
patchwork. However, and because this art is still not
sufficiently known in our country (Portugal), purses
and bags are the top 1 of interests and therefore we
seek to have different patterns and designs to please
so many people who come to us.
Your suggestions for those who want to start
learning sewing or patchwork?
Learn before embarking on your own. If you have
good bases it is possible to create and give wings to
the imagination.
It is difficult to learn the essential, or better, if you
have sensitivity to the essential, only in books or
online. After that, like what you do, be creative and
patient.
In PanoPraMantas you can take lessons in
sewing and patchwork, purchase fabrics and
materials for your work and participate in various
workshops.

“In our classes we seek to blend
the sewing and patchwork to
spread this art, which we fell in
love”
Is there a preference in demand for learn sewing
or patchwork?
If each of you were a trim, what would it be?
P: Would be a sewing thread to create and shape
the work.
M: A bias tape, that is the end of most patchwork
works.
I love to finish a project and look at the work either
mine, Paula’s or the students...It is very delightful,
as my granddaughter would say!!
At the moment, PanoPraMantas is a hobby or
profession?
Without no doubt, sewing. However, has already
happened students who come to us to learn sewing
and then are interested in patchwork. In our classes
we seek to blend the two strands to spread this art,
which we fell in love and give notice that it is easier
then we anticipated. And after the “bug” has entered,
will not leave.
Does men also show interest in these activities, or
do you fell that are still taboos?
We have not had that experience. Although there
are many husbands or boyfriends to accompany our
clients and some even help in choosing, none ever
showed interest in participating in our classes.
P: It is profession.
M: To my great regret, it is still not possible to
devote myself full-time. Anyway, now is a great
demand, well beyond a hobby.
Does the internet influence your work? If yes,
how?
P+M: Of course, it is unavoidable. Furthermore,
we have an online shop, which requires us to be
always available.
What is the age range that search you more for
classes?
Young people between 20 and 30 years. We note
the revival of interest in handmade work in this
new generation, and it pleases us very much.
Do you want to add something that you think is
relevant?
Antes de terminar esta conversa, gostaríamos de
Before the end of this conversation, we would like to
thank Carla for having challanged us to be present
in this first issue of Paper and Cotton. Cheers for this
project. Still has a long and important way to go.
And, why not, take this opportunity to tell all those
who read us, whether customers, suppliers, friends
or just lovers of handmade crafts that is the mission
of PanoPraMantas do better and more in order to
become a national reference in this niche market.
Thank you!

Materials
Attach the zipper presser foot on your machine. Cut
4 pieces of bias tape of the same size as the zipper.
Make a ‘’sandwich’’ as follows: bias tape open with
right side out, plastic, zipper and bias tape with the
wrong side facing the plastic. Secure with pins. Using
the zipper presser foot, attach this sandwich next to
it. The zipper shall be open.
1 piece of printed laminated fabric with
9’’x12’’
1 piece of printed cotton fabric with
9’’x11’’
1 piece of clear plastic for sewing with
9’’x11’’
Make another seam on the underside of the bias
tape, the entire length, to lock the bottom of the
tape. For this will have to put a bit of parchment
paper over the whole length to achieve glide
work machine (plastic gets stuck in the machine’s
presser). After sewn just tear the paper and pull.
(picture 1).
1
1 zipper with 12’’ (30cm)
2 meters of bias tape
Parchment paper
Place the right side of the laminated fabric facing
plastic and align the two pieces. Placing now the
normal sewing machine presser foot close the bag
from both sides, reinforcing the seams at top and
bottom. Do not forget to put the parchment paper as
you can see in the picture 2.
With iron fold the bias tape in half and crease well.
Cover both side seams with bias tape, tucking the
ends into the upper extremities.
Make another “sandwich” to apply to the other side
of the zipper, placing this order: bias tape with the
right side out, laminated fabric with the right side
out, zipper, cotton fabric with the wrong side out and
finally bias tape opened with the wrong side out.
Sew the whole length of the zipper (zipper must be
opened for this operation) along the same and then
down again as you did on the other side.

For all those little things
that simply can’t fail to take
everywhere!
Paper and Cotton 19
Sew the entire length of the bag bottom, again using
parchment paper as an aid to the presser foot slide
in the plastic.
After stitching open the bottom corners and check
into 1 ½”. Sew over this brand, reinforcing seams
and once again using the parchment paper. Trim
excess fabric from ¼” of the seam, and remove the
parchment paper.
Repeat for the other corner. Cover then both seams
with bias tape (picture 5), folding the edges inward.
5
4
Cut all excess sewing threads and turn the bag
right side out. Finally just need fill it with all your
treasures.

How to do:
For each boot cut out the 2 patterns that make
the body and the top fold-over of the boot. For body
shape cut 2 times your green felt and for the foldover shape 4 times around dark er outside line of the
pattern. A seam allowance around the boot and fold
edges have already been added to the patterns.
1
For the boot you should line the two parts of the
boot pattern along the horizontal lines. Tape the two
pieces of paper together at this line before cuting
the felt.
Pin the right side of boot fold-over piece to the
right side of a second fold-over piece, and sew a ¼”
seam allowance the left and right sides of the fold.
Repeat this step with the remaining two boot fold
pieces. Now you will have two sewn boot fold-over
“circles”.
2
Slide one “circle” inside the other “circle”
facing right sides together, line up their side seam
allowances, as well as all the fold-over triangle
points. Sew a ¼” seam allowance around all the
edges of the fol-over points, leaving the top of the
fold open.
3
Now you have a single fold-over piece. Turn this
piece inside out.
4
Place the 2 boot pieces right sides together,
matching up all raw edges and stitch a ¼” seam
allowance around the side and bottom edges of the
boot. Don’t seam the top.Turn the boot inside out
throught the open top.
5
6 Slide the boot inside the fold-over, lining up the
top raw edges and the side seams. Sew a ½” seam
allowance around the entire top edge.
7 Flip the seam you just completed to the inside of
the boot.
8 Cut the decorative shapes that will decorate
the boot, using the cutting-dies and the cutting
machine. Tape them to one side of the boot with
glue.
Make a small loop by cutting a rectangle of felt
with 6”x1cm, folded in half and sewn inside left edge
of the boot fol-over, to be able to hang.

Health
Cerebral Palsy
by: Alexandra Moreira, M.D.
Cerebral palsy is a disorder affecting
body and muscle coordination
caused by damage of brain during is
development.
This damage may be caused by
lack of oxygen, by an infection, by
exposure to toxicants, by a head
injury, etc. But in a great number of
cases it is not possible to determine
the cause of cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy is caused by brain
damage occurring before, during
or after birth until the age of three.
Every year 2 babies in every 1000
born will be affected with cerebral
palsy.
Cerebral palsy may be associated
with other diseases such as epilepsy,
visual disturbance, impaired hearing and language disturbance.
It is called “palsy” because injuries do not evolve and not because the “brain is stopped”.
Contrary to what most people think, a person with cerebral palsy may not have mental retardation.
Cerebral palsy is very heterogeneous. There are 3 types: spastic, athetoid/dystonia and ataxic.
Spastic type refers to the increased tone or tension in a muscle. That causes blocks in effective movements.
The increased muscle tone and stiffness can limit the range movement in the joints and the children with
spastic cerebral palsy develop deformities of the extremities over time due to joint contractures. This is the
most common type of palsy.
Athetoid/dystonic or dyskenetic cerebral palsy is the second most frequent type. Athetoid form is marked by
slow, writhing involuntary muscle movements and usually affect the arms. The muscles alternate between
floppy and tense. Unwanted movements cause a person to appear restless and constantly moving. People
with this condition have difficulty holding their body in a steady upright position for sitting or walking, only
being still when asleep. Dyskinesia means that these movements may be repetitive, almost like a tic.
Ataxia is the least common diagnosis. People with this type of cerebral palsy have low muscle tone and
difficulty coordinating the muscles to perform fine motor activities, such as writing.
Often have difficulty balancing while walking and walk with their feet apart from each other.
The palsy has no cure, but there are many different treatments and therapies that help control the
symptoms.
44 Paper and Cotton
Cerebral Palsy
Treatment should be started as soon as possible, just at the time of diagnosis so that the results are better.
The treatments undergo physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, medications to relax the
muscles, technical aids adapted to each person (wheelchair, adapted computers, sign language, etc).
The “Associação Sorriso da Rita” (Rita’s Smile Association), is a social solidarity association that was created
due to the need felt by a group of parents and friends to disclose the problems of persons with cerebral palsy
and in that way go changing the mind set, so that, these people can be more accepted in society.
This association began as a small movement to support children with cerebral palsy and since April 2010 it
is a social solidarity association that seeks to promote actions to educational and therapeutic support and
entertainment value, applicable to children, youth and adults, with a view to their social inclusion.
The “Sorriso da Rita” (Rita’s Smile) project began with the sponsorship of the journalist Mário Augusto, father
of the girl who gives her name (Rita) to this association, and that it is a cerebral palsy carrier.
In 2005 Mário Augusto wrote a book about cinema with the intention of turning the revenue from the sale of
books in aid for these children. The idea came from the need to draw attention to cerebral palsy, attention to
the difficulties that families feel.
More than ignorance about what is cerebral palsy, parents feel powerless regarding the indifference and lack
of sensivity with which the problem is often treated. The initiative was a success. So that instead of one, as
expected, was written two books – “Backstage of Hollywood” and “More backstage of Hollywood”.
Cerebral palsy has no cure.
Can however be avoided. In this regard, if we disseminate the concept of cerebral palsy, she becomes better
known, more avoided and we work in a preventive manner.
The main message that we send to parents of children with cerebral palsy is that don’t give up on your
children and your dreams. They always have a huge potential, it is necessary to give them the opportunity to
express themselves. Claim their rights and yours, make yourself heard and if you are not able alone, ask for
help!

The Place
Romania is most known for its beaches of the Black
Sea and the Transylvania Dracula. However the best
preserved of Europe’s deltas, Natural World Heritage
Site is about 281km and 3 hours and 25 minutes
drive from Bucharest, is in formation 10,000 years
ago, has alluvial deposits of 67 million tonnes per
year and is the habitat of birds and other animals
and plants.
View of Romania
The tranquility of the river to bathe the
city with its spaces and buildings.
The Danube river has it’s springs in Germany’s Black
Forest, across several european countries, travels
2850 km to reach the Black Sea. However, the
various channels that were created by engineering
shorten the distance to the Black Sea and joined this
natural road to the North Sea.
Strauss imortalized the river in music, Ceausescu
thought drain the Delta, the pollution generated by
the searche for ore such as gold, helped pollute his
waters, bird flu alarmed Europe, but it, the Delta,
is still there, with more or less birds depending on
season. It is a World Heritage and is therefore the
duty of all his protection.

48 Paper and Cotton
It is the second large delta in Europe but the best
preserved. Extends over 4500 km2 occupying
essencially Romania, while in the north it extends
the Ukrainian territory. It is formed by multiple
channels, the main three are Chilia, Sulina e Sfantu
Gheorghe, lakes, wetlands, reed islands. Hosts over
300 species of birds as well as 45 fish species. In
the northern part of the Delta are wild horses, sand
dunes and Forest Letea, some areas and lakes are
natural integral reserve and therefore visits are
forbidden.
The Danube
The serenity of the river and its
surroundings, a mix of urban and
wild.
Paper and Cotton 49
Despite the beauty Delta is a hard place to live.
Winters are long and cold swept by the winds
of Siberia, however some 15,000 people inhabit
the Delta, living in villages and one city, Sulina.
Among them live some ethnic groups, as Lippovan,
dissenting from the Russian Orthodox Church, living
from fishing and gardening in small villages for 200
years. When you visit the Delta, you can lunch in one
of these villages and if time is enough, you can still
visit the ruins of Halmyris and Histria.
Starting Point
Tulcea makes a great starting point for exploring the
Delta, but if you have time, small villages of Delta,
can be an option.
There are several hotels in town and it is not hard
to find a place to stay, reservations may be made
online. Along the bank of Danube we can find
multiple travel agencies, making visits of a few
hours or all day. The visit is made in small boats or
speedboats, these too noisy for anyone who wants
to see birds.
How to get there
TAP has direct flights to Bucharest. The easiest way
to reach the Delta is by car. The first part of the
trip, most monotonous, is made on the Constance
motorway, then secondary roads, some holes,
landscape of rolling plains with cultivation of cereals
and sunflowers. The traffic is little but one can find
some carts, cows in the road, and sometimes an
endless road and just for us.

Were found about 300 species of birds, the most
important are White Pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus)
and Pelecanus Crispus.

In the complex world we live in busy, overwhelmed
by the pressures of work and family demands and
the suffocation of city stress, revived an intense

W
as looking to answer this urgent need of our times – of calm, peace,
tranquility, harmony with nature that arose Aquafalls Spa Hotel Rural in
Vieira do Minho, Portugal.
Given that the first need of a holiday complex is physical space, it must
be careful in its implementation, to do so in a sustainable way in order
to preserve and, if possible, recover the natural (and cultural) existing
as the Gerês, as we know, is rich! Store and retrieve the surrounding
landscape, along with the materialization of a tourism project quality,
innovative in concept and space, were dominant concerns of Aquafalls.
In developing the architecture
design was crucial the inspiration
of the place, allowing the
architecture and designs of
buildings emphasized the
isolation, tranquility and harmony
that breathes there. The hotel
develops with several buildings
implanted along the slop, as a
boutique style hotel. It has a
central building – where lies the
spa, bar, restaurant, reception and
support services – with a location
overlooking the river Cávado and
the reservoir Caniçada, and the
sight that dazzles all these spaces
is truly superb! Despite having
a “contemporary architectural
language”, stone and wood were
chosen as the materials of excellence in its construction, establishing
a balance between the contemporary and the environment with the
spirit of the mountain, a friendly relationship with nature.
54 Paper and Cotton
The view that you can see from there is a gift of
nature to the eyes and the spirit. The hotel aims to
be an intimate space, of well-being, with green, with
flowers, aromatic and fragrant plants and water
cascades.
Framed in one of the richest ecosystems of
Portugal, the Aquafalls Hotel is a product of the
universality of the Portuguese people, reflecting in
its lush vegetation the mix of a people isolated and
mundane (characteristics of the Portuguese people).
The landscape created also wanted to evoke the
unique ability to host by the Portuguese.
The Aquafalls bet on higher quality service.
The restaurant “Splendid by Chakall” has a menu
that is an icon to the traditional flavors and aromas
of the Minho region, authored by the prestigious
Chef Chakall.
Accommodation in comfort is our constant aim.
The friendliness and simplicity of all the staff at the
service of the hotel form the real image that conveys
the Aquafalls.
Conclusion: we would like that the “concept”
Aquafalls – which began 4 years ago, and continues
to prove daily its success and functionality at all
levels, was a benchmark in luxury hospitality and
tourism.
We believe that is the right way and that’s what we
chose.
