ImpAcT@ impish action journalism #1 – 7/2014 Introduction – in English: I proudly present the first printable issue of ImpACT@. Almost 15 years ago I held the first issue of Under Pressure in my hands and together with Luc Opdebeeck delivered it to the participants of the Forum Theatre Festival in Vienna. Augusto Boal took 5 copies back to Brazil and the rest is history. Literally, for Under Pressure appeared every three months without intervals until early 2006, when I resigned as editor. Eight years later, I want to reinvent this tradition, but with a twitch. Theatre of the Oppressed practitioners can send in articles, but they have to be in at least two languages. One of them has to be a language I understand: Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or French. And please: translate every article in your language and spread it around! Dialogue is also about abolishing language oppression. I hope you enjoy this issue, which holds: 1) Learning scene #1, conceived by Oksana Potapova and Jana Salakhova (Ukraine) in English and German 2) An interview with Katerina Klyuzko and Oksana Potapova in English and Ukrainian 3) An overview of the Latin American TO network by Bárbara Santos in Portuguese, Spanish and English 4) The announcement of the 10th Forum Theatre Festival in Senegal, by the team of Kàddu Yaraax, in French and English Send in your articles to [email protected]. Articles will be published on http://actimp.blogspot.nl , including new translations of already existing articles. Spread the word, become a follower and contribute! Subscribe to the C-LinQ newsletter for more news on TO and other projects: http://eepurl.com/tzOOz. Schickt Eure Artikel an: [email protected]. Learning scene #1 Based on improvisations in Kiev, 28 March 2014 Characters: Joker A has (at least) 5 years of experience and has worked in several communities; she has just negotiated a major project in one of the communities. The project will run for 2 years and offer employment to one joker, one assistant joker, one administrator and (during a Forum Theatre tour) two actors. Joker A is not only the leading joker but also the manager of the TO company. Joker B has started working as an assistant joker one year ago after having been introduced to TO in the context of activism. She has a strong desire to use TO as a tool for immediate change. Actor A is a member of the community the new project is aimed at; she has been doing small assignments in the company and is happy to be paid at last. It would be her first job in several years. She will be able to pay off some of the debts she made with friends and relatives. Actor B is a professional who was introduced to TO during a community arts project. She learned Forum acting and likes the idea of being involved in community arts. Her main focus is on mainstage productions, which however are quite scarce these days. Before playing this scene, the community and the kind of project should be determined first. For the sake of this exercise, I chose a Human Rights perspective and a project that focuses on the empowerment of Crimean Tatars. Joker B is a Human Rights activist and Actor A is a Crimean Tatar woman, who stayed in Kiev after having studied but has lots of relatives living in Crimea. Jokers and actors have names of course, give them names before you start! We are in the office of the TO company. Actor B enters and starts cleaning her desk, packing meaningful objects that were part of the reason she committed herself to TO. Joker B (Looks at a leaflet) The call for the demonstration that brought down the government! I think it belongs somewhere else (puts it in a bag). (Holds up a brick) This was the symbol of revolution; they shoot, we rock! But now we turned soft (puts it in the same bag) (Holds up the book “Theatre of the Oppressed”) This could have been our new inspiration. 2 ImpACT@ is published by C-LinQ – Ronald Matthijssen – [email protected] – http://actimp.blogspot.nl ImpAcT@ impish action journalism Rehearsal for the revolution! But what are we doing now? Enter Joker A with a bottle of champagne Joker A Ah, I see you’re holding up the book it all started with. Such a coincidence! I have great news! Joker B I see you’re holding up the booze. Let’s drink! (puts the book on the table) Joker A Yeah! We got the grant! We’ve got work for the next two years. We can finally do something substantial for the Crimean Tatars! Are there any glasses? And where are our actors? Joker B The actors will be here any minute. I’m saying goodbye. Joker A I’m sorry? I don’t get it. You are leaving us? Joker B Sorry my dear but I can’t take it anymore. We are just fooling ourselves and what’s more serious, we are also fooling the Crimean Tatars. The money should be transferred to them directly. Enter actor B Joker A (to actor B) Did you know about this? That she’s going to go? What do you think? Actor B She believes TO is not strong enough. I agree with her. We’re doing theatre and not revolution. But theatre is stronger in the end, because it humanizes society. (points at the book). Read Boal! Joker B That is outrageous! Boal wanted TO to change societies radically, but we can only do that if we have a big movement behind us. Like on Maidan. But now we are a small group doing projects in the margin of society. The Crimean Tatars are oppressed by strong forces. We are weak and we shouldn’t pretend we can change anything for them or with them. I want to go back to the struggle for real changes, not cosmetic ones to please donors and politicians. Enter Actor A Actor A Did someone speak about Crimean Tatars? I am so glad we got the money for the project. I can finally earn some money and help my sisters and brothers to build up their resistance. It is so important for the people that groups like us show their solidarity. Joker A You see, it is not cosmetic, we are making a difference. Joker B The only difference is the salaries we get. What will change for the Crimean Tatars? The politicians will say: look, we gave them a project. This will not give them back their country, their houses, their land. We are just helping them to adapt. We have become 3 ImpACT@ is published by C-LinQ – Ronald Matthijssen – [email protected] – http://actimp.blogspot.nl ImpAcT@ impish action journalism part of the system. Actor B So you want to help them fight for the rest of their lives, and how are you going to beat the international powers that decide on the Crimea? With those bricks? With that book? Are the Crimean Tatars only entitled to assistance when they win the battle? Your battle or theirs? Actor A (quietly) I think it’s a great thing that for once there is money going to a project for US! And by the way: I need the money and why should I refuse it so it goes to someone else? Joker B But we won’t reach our goals, not even the ones we wrote in the project outline. We can’t empower Crimean Tatars if they cannot have their country back. Joker A If we don’t take the project, we won’t be able to do anything. And it’s a recognition for our work as well. I worked for five years almost without salary to achieve this. Actor B Yeah, why can’t TO companies get at least a small part of the funding? Joker B Yuck, you’re only in it for the money! I’m leaving! Actor A Please don’t, it will be such a disappointment for our Crimean Tatar group. They’ll think we let them down. Joker B If we accept the project, that’s when we let them down. Lasst uns trinken! Joker_in A Bitte? Auf kommt Schauspieler_in B 5 ImpACT@ is published by C-LinQ – Ronald Matthijssen – [email protected] – http://actimp.blogspot.nl ImpAcT@ impish action journalism Joker_in A (zu Schauspieler_in B) Wusstest du davon? Dass sie geht? Was meinst du? Auf kommt Schauspieler_in A Schauspieler_in A Hat jemand LGBT gesagt? (exit) The Union Between Love and Truth Ukraine hits TO – and back Kyiv/The Hague, March 14, 2014: “Everything is moving so fast” says Oksana Potapova, to my left on my split screen. She is one of the Ukrainian jokers behind the “Joker Tsunami” action, which brought 6 experienced Jokers to Ukraine mid-February of this year. “It is only months ago that Yanukovich was about to sign the EU-treaty, then he changed his mind and violently oppressed the protests, then we had the demonstrations, the violence, a new government, EU-money pouring in, a referendum in Crimea next week, elections in May, the situation changes all the time. How can you even start to react to everything that’s going on?” The Joker Tsunami came in the midst of a continuous Tsunami of events. Oksana was introduced to TO in 2010, when Hjalmar Joffre-Eichhorn started offering TO trainings. Her main focus is youth and transcultural dialogue. Katerina Klyuzko, my right hand screen interview partner, started using TO in 2012 and is one of the founders of the charity, volunteer NGO “Sertse v Dolonjkakh” (The Heart in Palms, founded 2009) which offers concrete assistance to needy children, tries to introduce new approaches to children’s education in Ukrainian schools, boarding, rural schools and orphanages and to attract youth to the active lifestyle. At the last several years her team works on new project "On-Life! Ukrainian Values", which is aimed at promoting the human values in schools and orphanages where they use Montessori methods, the concept “P4C” (philosophy for children) , TO and many others. We spoke about 45 minutes about what TO meant to these Jokers and to Ukraine. Love and truth And then we went into a fascinating conversation about what TO actually means for the Ukrainian society. Kateryna explains that “TO is the way of learning how to love each other. Due to TO we can understand the other person, without judging him, accepting his values. And it helps us to change our attitude to this person. This idea helps while working with teenagers who learn how to accept other people, how to accept themselves, how to see, the problem not on surface, but much deeper… It is very important, especially for teenagers (from orphanages) and youth. 7 ImpACT@ is published by C-LinQ – Ronald Matthijssen – [email protected] – http://actimp.blogspot.nl ImpAcT@ impish action journalism TO is the way of humanizing people. Nowadays, Ukrainian people are aimed to success and individualization. But the events, happened on Maidan showed us many people, who are ready to sacrifice their needs for others. That`s why, this is a good time for TO now in Ukraine, because people became more open for dialogue, changing and love. “ How close can you come to the main objective of TO phrased by Augusto Boal as “Humanizing humanity”? Boal emphasized that sympathy, meaning active support, was the contrary to empathy, which only means lip service without changing anything. Oksana then added that “TO also reveals the truth about the masks we are all wearing and the roles we are playing, ant it also shows the true persons behind them. There is no escaping from this.” The Jokers emphasized how the Maidan revolution revealed the truth about the Ukrainian people and changes its self-image for ever: “After many years of passivity, we defied all internalized prejudices about indecision, laziness, cowardice and wavering. We raised our voices, we revolted and we won! History will never be the same!” Joker empowerment and development The last part of the interview was about the possibilities and objectives of the Ukrainian TO movement. Kateryna and Oksana pointed out that TO has become known to many activists in Ukraine and there was already an emerging TO nucleus in many regions of the country. The most important thing now was to put the trainings into more action and attract even more people to TO. The reality of ever changing circumstances had to be taken into account, though. By the time you finished saying “Stop!”, you’re already a few steps further along the path of history. We finished the interview by realizing that the empowerment of the Ukrainian Jokers, the development of their own style and strategy, was the most important objective for the near future. 8 ImpACT@ is published by C-LinQ – Ronald Matthijssen – [email protected] – http://actimp.blogspot.nl ImpAcT@ impish action journalism у 2012 році. Nesse sentido, parece pertinente relatar as experiências vividas no contexto latinoamericano. From worldwide Theatre of the Oppressed To the worlds of the Theatre of the Oppressed Bárbara Santos23 In January 2014, when I received through a mailing list the proposal to promote workshops in Kiev, Ukraine, I was in Latin America, where International Theatre of the Oppressed events were planned. The most intense period of these message exchanges happened when the Madalena International Network meeting and the III Theatre of the Oppressed LatinAmerican Encounter, were both held in La Paz, Bolivia. It was difficult to follow all the discussions because of the great volume of messages. Among the topics that I could reach, my attention was drawn to the analysis on the global Theatre of the Oppressed movement and the longing for dialogue between practitioners. In this sense, it seems pertinent to report some of the experiences on the Latin-American context. It is evident that around the globe there are groups and individuals who practice and/or research the Theatre of the Oppressed. Also, it is evident that this practice is diverse: Different themes, levels of socio-political engagement, depth, length of experiences and structures for its systematization and diffusion. In spite that the practice of the method is 23 Bárbara has been the general coordinator of the Centre of Theatre of the Oppressed until 2008, before which she worked with Augusto Boal for almost two decades in several projects including Legislative Theatre and Aesthetic of the Oppressed. She has developed the Madalena Laboratory – Teatro das Oprimidas, an innovative aesthetic experience on the specificities of the oppressions faced by women. [email protected] 17 ImpACT@ is published by C-LinQ – Ronald Matthijssen – [email protected] – http://actimp.blogspot.nl ImpAcT@ impish action journalism currently worldwide, would it be accurate to speak of a worldwide Theatre of the Oppressed movement? Being in touch with distinct worlds of Theatre of the Oppressed with different forms of organization and diverse practices, can prevent the risk of endorsing a centralized perspective. Which would establish a "solar system" for a practice that is essentially plural and may be better represented by the idea of "many simultaneous worlds." Latin America experiences a peculiar process of development and diffusion of Theatre of the Oppressed, a genuine demonstration of the multiplicity of these worlds. Although it originated in South America, the Theatre of the Oppressed had virtually disappeared in the region as a result of authoritarianism and violent repression of the military regime. With the return of Augusto Boal to Rio de Janeiro, in 1986, the method re-started its diffusion process first in Brazil and almost two decades later, in neighboring countries. In Brazil, during the last three decades, TO method changed its position from "unknown foreign" to "fellow worker" in social, political and cultural interventions of associations, groups, organizations and movements, thanks to projects started by the Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed - CTO24. These projects aimed at creating local groups and training people who could replicate experiences in order to ensure the continuity and development of these initiatives. Currently, there are hundreds of trained TO practitioners scattered throughout Brazil. It is also significant the amount and diversity of groups of Theatre of the Oppressed in action, that autonomously carry out projects, meetings and events. CTO's contribution to the dissemination of the method in Latin America, through its artistic residency program and/or local partnerships, has been also of great importance. From 2006, Argentina started a process in which various groups started to apply Theatre of the Oppressed, operating in different, similar and/or complementary areas and, with some frequency, collaborating in articulated common projects, events and training courses. The collaboration between Uruguayan and Argentinean groups and the association with Mariana Villani25 from Teatraviesas, stimulates the creation of a virtual network: Relato Sur – Theatre of the Oppressed Latin American Network of the Southern Cone. Peru, Bolivia and Colombia develop other processes of diffusion of the Theatre of the Oppressed. During this period, there was also a significant increase of Latin Americans from Mexico to Uruguay in the programs and courses at the CTO. Representatives from Latin American countries participated in the First International Conference of Theatre of the Oppressed, in July 2009, in Rio de Janeiro, organized by the CTO, where there was a proposal of intensifying regional dialogues and meetings. Inspired by the Conference and the possibility of the visit from Sima and Sanjoy Ganguly, took place in Buenos Aires, also in July, the first personal meeting of Relato Sur. Months later, at CTO, it happened an international Theatre of the Oppressed training, with South American 24 www.cto.org.br Co-founder of Teatraviesas group in Barcelona, at the moment she integrates the Ma(g)dalena International Network and is artistic director of the group Magdalena Puerto Madryn, Argentina. 25 18 ImpACT@ is published by C-LinQ – Ronald Matthijssen – [email protected] – http://actimp.blogspot.nl ImpAcT@ impish action journalism practitioners, who discussed the proposals resulting from the Conference and the possibility of organizing the first amplified Encounter of Relato Sur. The proposals of the Conference and the collaboration among practitioners and groups strengthened Relato Sur, which began among countries of Southern Cone and quickly, has been expanded. With Central American countries and Mexico, became RELATO. The network communication is primarily in Portuguese and Spanish, through a virtual group that currently consists of about 600 participants. RELATO promotes the Theatre of the Oppressed Latin American Encounters every two years. Theatre of the Oppressed Latin American Encounters are democratic spaces of solidarity among collectives, that discuss the development of the method in the region; seek analysis and exchange of practical experiences; support political alliances, disseminate the method through training. Every two years, the Encounters are hosted by a different country to broaden the access to the Network to groups located in different latitudes of the region. The search for funding for each Encounter is shared between the host group and other groups of the RELATO. The program is also collectively decided and consists of panel discussions, workshops, performances and community activities. Besides this, there are RELATO conferences and evaluation sessions. The host group seeks ways to secure lodging and food. Each participating group collaborates with a nominal fee and is responsible for founding their means to participate in the Encounter. The participation fee is waived to groups with financial difficulties. All practitioners who share their experiences, through panels, presentations or workshops offered it for free. The First Theatre of the Oppressed Latin American Encounter happened in Jujuy, Argentina, South America, organized by MTO-Jujuy26, in 2010, with about 200 participants. This meeting was significantly boosted Theatre of the Oppressed in Latin America. The second edition took place in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, Central America, organized by METOCA, in 2012 with about 400 participants. METOCA (Multiplicación y Exploración del Teatro del Oprimido en Centroamérica)27 is a joint partnership between social, political and cultural organizations from Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras, for the diffusion of the method in Central America. In February 2014, the III Theatre of the Oppressed Latin American Encounter happened in La Paz, Bolivia, South America, with the collaboration of various groups, with about 300 participants. The next edition of the Latin American Theatre of the Oppressed Encounter happens in 2016, in Central America. As a consequence of an intense collaboration among feminist organizations in Bolivia, in February 2014 in the city of La Paz, the third meeting of the Ma(g)dalena International Network30 also took place. This network is comprised by TO women collectives and practitioners from Europe, Latin America and Africa. The network communicates mainly in English and Spanish (also including Portuguese, German and French when it’s possible). About 40 women representing collectives of Ma(g)dalenas attended the seminar, whose themes were: The machismo in the Theatre of the Oppressed; and operation and prospects of working in networks. In addition to the seminar the themes were also developed in a theatrical laboratory, whose results were presented31 at the opening of the 3rd Theatre of the Oppressed Latin American Encounter. On the proposal of the Ma(g)dalena International Network, the theme "The Machismo in the Theatre of the Oppressed" was included in the programming of the panels discussion of this 3rd Encounter. From 15th to 20th September 2015, the group Magdalenas-Puerto Madryn32 will hold the first Ma(g)dalena International FESTIVAL in Puerto Madryn, Argentina33. These experiments confirm that only one language is not sufficient to promote relationship and dialogue among the worlds of the Theatre of the Oppressed. Therefore the constant challenge of building plural modes of communication. These experiments demonstrate that the worlds of the Theatre of the Oppressed must recognize diversity - ethnic, economic, class, gender and so on - and accept the challenge of ensuring access and opportunity for participation, considering the profound inequalities imposed by social privileges. These are examples, which warn that the gender issue has to be considered and never ignored among Theatre of the Oppressed practitioners and that the search for balance and fairness should be an ethical commitment. These experiments leave no doubt about the importance of geographical decentralization for the democratization of the praxis, the horizontality of the relations and the circulation of the power.
