CORRELATION OF MYOPIC ASTIGMATISM WITH TORIC IRIS-FIXATED PHAKIC IOL: A
RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Purpose: To analyze the postoperative astigmatism in patients with toric iris-fixated phakic
intraocular lens for the correction of myopic astigmatism and its correlation to lens
misalignment. Methods: A retrospective study of 30 eyes of 16 patiens with correction of
myopic astigmatism using toric iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (Artisan® and Artiflex®)
between 2009 and 2013 was performed. Postoperative lens misalignment was calculated
using anterior segment photography. Visual acuities, biomicroscopy, tonometry, corneal
topography and central endothelial cell count were examined. Efficacy, visual acuity progress,
predictability and complications were analyzed. The safety and efficacy of the procedure was
also studied. Results: Patients had a mean age of 32,3 ± 6,8 years. Safety and efficacy
indexes were positive. The great majority of the patients had a residual astigmatism between
0,25 and 0,75. Small lens misalignment wasn’t correlated to postoperative astigmatism.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that implantation of this type of lenses is a predictable,
efficient and safe method for correcting myopic astigmatism. Furthermore, with this type of
lens, residual minor misalignments have an extremely low effect on astigmatism.
