“A performing arts festival that promises to take
theatre, music, dance and performance art to
Minde, Alcanena and Torres Novas, promoting
encounters between foreign and national artists and
the local community, with the creative universe and
life that exists in these towns.”
Expresso newspaper Sept 2009
tiago guedes editorial
4th Festival Materiais Diversos. 38% funding cut to the 2-year contract signed with the central government. 1 secretary of state for culture with 0 seats at the
council of ministers. Dozens of organisations and artists without funding, with little prospect of being funded at all and certainly not in the amounts practiced in
the 90s.
Today more than ever, numbers are used to demagogically excuse a dramatic divestment in culture. In 2012, culture accounts for only 0.15% of state spending in
Portugal! Increasingly sidelined from government strategy, the future of the arts is unclear. Cultural agents are, to all effects, partners of the State in the execution
of its cultural policies. It is high time simplistic notions of State- or subsidy-dependence, far removed from the cultural reality of the country, were barred from the
lexicon filling so many mouths and pages.
It would easy to give into this alarming panorama. But Festival Materiais Diversos has adapted to this shift in the paradigm governing the relationship between
partners. And we have figures, too.
771 kilometres between Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro
13 Portuguese artists
9 Brazilian artists
15 dance, theatre and music performances
347 metres of Ana Rita Teodoro ‘melting’ in Minde’s historic centre
30 people from Alcanena in Martim Pedroso’s Penthesilia
3 new Portuguese bands jamming in the Minde bandstand
1800 photographs to inspire choreographers from São Paulo
217 baskets for picnics with the artists in the Minde park
30 years of Brazilian dance with Denise Stutz
27 hours of DJs
3 rectangular tables
100 inhabitants of Minde, Alcanena and Torres Novas on stage at Teatro Virgínia in Ana Borralho & João Galante’s Atlas
The festival responds to ‘official’ figures with this offering of dance, theatre and music created in Portugal and Brazil, with the support of the Alcanena
Municipality, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Culture, the Secretary of Culture of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Tourism Office of Lisboa e Vale do Tejo,
the innumerable local enthusiasts who have made the festival their own and a team of collaborators working to transform this adventure into reality.
Enjoy!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Marlene M. Freitas’s paradise is a choreographic concert set in the garden of our imaginations.
This place of music, dance, flora, fauna, food and drink is located between a paradise of Christian
origin, characterised by abundance, and another undefined place of fortuitous encounters with
sewing machines and dissonant, heterogeneous materials.
post show talk with Marlene Monteiro
Freitas
This is Marlene’s third year at Festival Materiais Diversos. She is one of the most active
choreographers of her generation, regularly performing with various national and international
choreographers since concluding her training in Lisbon and Brussels. Her own work has been
presented at some of the most important theatres and performing arts festivals in the world.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MelTe is an invitation to rediscover the historic centre of Minde through the body of Ana Rita
Teodoro. As she pushes her physical mass against the urban anatomy, she explores the possibilities
of movement arising from space and geography.
Ana Rita Teodoro is a choreographer, dancer and researcher. She is currently completing her
Master in Dance and Performance at CNDC Angers. She is interested in Butoh, working with
children and interacting with public space.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Cristian Duarte’s kaleidoscopic solo chronicles a century of dance through the work of one
hundred choreographers. Informed by Umberto Eco’s “The Infinity of Lists”, this “best of” is also a
reflection on the hidden logic of catalogues, lists and inventories in the arts.
Brazilian dancer and choreographer Cristian Duarte trained at P.A.R.T.S (Brussels) and has
collaborates regularly with Brazilian and European artists. He lives in São Paulo, where he
manages several partnerships and artistic residency programmes.

love, family relationships, God and death are visited and revisited. Dulce is the result of a
residency with Brazilian and Portuguese artists who explore the possibility of losing yourself in
the differences of the Other and recovering a lost connection.
Michel Blois, Thiare Maia, Flávia Gusmão and Nuno Gil represent a generation of
multidisciplinary Brazilian and Portuguese actors and directors exploring creative partnerships.

Martim Pedroso has worked, as an actor, with various national and international directors. In

most important theatre production houses in Portugal. He is associate artist at Materiais

dance
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ângelo Madureira and Ana Catarina Vieira interrogate the place of memory in the present by
revisiting their own choreographic past. By cutting and rearranging 1800 photographs from their
first four pieces, they distil a choreographic vocabulary based on traditional Brazilian dances and
classical dance.
Since 2000, Ângelo Madureira and Ana Catarina’s work has focused on the dialogue between
classical and popular Brazilian dance. Ana was a lead dancer of Ballet do Cisne Negro and Ângelo
was lead dancer and director of Ballet Popular do Recife. These influences are reflected in their
vision of what dance can be today.

through a personal and emotional history of Brazilian contemporary dance. The memory of
the body and its relationship to identity – as well as how this is inscribed in space and relates
to the public – motivate and shape this delicate solo.
Denise Stutz is a founding member of the emblematic GRUPO CORPO and is a long-time
collaborator of Lia Rodrigues. Since 2003, her work has become particularly attentive to the
history of choreographic art.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Combining formal liberty with rigid methodology, Sofia and Vitor give shape to a poetic space where
rigorous movement meets emotions and sound. In their most recent piece, they are compelled to go
out – an ‘out’ that is not geographic nor part of a classic narrative of exodus in the face of a failed
present. The movement, in another direction, restores a perspective that allows us to connect
asymmetric and disparate fragments.
Sofia Dias and Vitor Roriz are co-creators of a series of dance pieces, including A gesture that is
nothing more than a threat for which they won the Jardin d’Europe award in 2011. They are
associate artists at Espaço do Tempo and Materiais Diversos and return to FMD for the second time.

to French cinema of the 1970s, contemporary dance, family drama, metalinguistic exercises and
children’s stories. With a humour and playfulness reminiscent of Monty Python, Brazilian company
Foguetes Maravilha deconstruct and reconstruct theatrical conventions in search of narrative
freedom.
Brazilian directors Felipe Rocha and Alex Cassal, proponents of a new Brazilian dramaturgy, founded
their company Foguetes Marvilha in 2008. They have participated in projects led by Mundo Perfeito
