elegance with a sultry style: that is the recipe of Roberta
Narciso, the Angolan model who has captivated the international fashion world, walking down runways from New
York to Paris to Milan. Haute Couture has succumbed to the
graceful stride of her long legs that have not yet stepped on
any path othe than the one to success.

ascida e criada em Luanda, Roberta Narciso cresceu num ambiente familiar tradicional, onde o único caminho
que os seus pés conheciam era entre a casa e a escola. Mas, dentro da jovem simples e tímida, o desejo de
pisar as passerelles esteve sempre presente. Ao longo de uma infância onde costurava roupas para vestir as
suas bonecas, e de uma adolescência em que assistia a desfiles na televisão, Roberta sonhava ser uma modelo internacional, na sua ideia ingénua do universo da Moda.
Em 2010, com apenas 17 anos, concorreu à primeira edição do
concurso Elite Model Look em Angola. Mediram-lhe a altura e
o corpo, avaliaram o seu andar, e colocaram-na entre as dez finalistas, agraciadas com uma formação ministrada por Ana Marta Faial, reconhecida ex-modelo Angolana. Roberta descreve
esta experiência como única, onde as aspirantes a modelos conheceram o desafio dos saltos altos e aprenderam a desfilar
vestindo Alta Costura.
Quando entrou no concurso, no auge da sua inocência, Roberta
"não descartava a possibilidade de vencer", mas também sabia
que entre a concorrência estavam raparigas tão jovens e de beleza tão exótica quanto ela. Concorreu "para mostrar o que valia, para ganhar experiência e para conhecer melhor o universo
da moda". Naturalmente elegante, revelou-se uma agradável
surpresa aos jurados do concurso e conquistou o título.

orn and raised in Luanda, Roberta Narciso grew
up in a traditional family where the main path
her feet used to trod was that between home
and school. But inside this simple and shy young
woman the dream of walking down runways was
always there. From her childhood when she used to sew clothes for her dolls, to an adolescence in which she would frequently watch fashion shows on TV, Roberta nurtured the
aspiration of one day becoming an international model, according to her youthful dream of what that might mean.
At age 17 she entered into the inaugural running of the first
Elite Model Look, Angola in 2010. They took her height and vital statistics, judged her stride and poise, then elected her
one of the 10 finalists who earned the right to be coached by
Ana Marta Faial, a former Angolan model. Roberta describes
a singular experience where the potential models learnt the
secrets of parading in heels and modelling Haute Couture.
When she entered the contest, at the height of her innocence,
Roberta 'didn't discard the idea of winning' but she also knew
that some of the other young women were just as exquisite and
beautiful as she was. She entered the pageant to 'show what
I was worth, to gain experience and to learn more about the
world of fashion'. Her natural elegance seemed to overwhelm the contest jury and she won the award. From there she travelled on to Shanghai, where she was selected as one of the 15 finalists amongst the 71 contestants from 64 countries.
Her first steps towards a successful career had been taken. The biggest challenge was leaving her country, whose culture, she says, always accompanies her 'in the music, the fashion and in the yearning...' that she feels for home.

De Angola voou para a China. Na edição mundial do concurso Elite Model Look, em Xangai, Roberta conseguiu ser uma
das 15 finalistas, entre 71 candidatas de 64 países. Descoseu-se o seu caminho para o sucesso. O grande desafio foi deixar o seu país, cuja cultura admite estar "sempre presente, na música, na moda e nas saudades" que sente de casa.
De menina a modelo, viu o seu sonho realizar-se nas passerelles internacionais. As suas medidas perfeitas conquistaram os
desfiles mais cobiçados. Estreou-se em Valentino, na passerelle da Haute Couture de Paris e, vestindo Prada, conquistou
um lugar entre as quatro únicas modelos negras que desfilaram
para a marca – título que partilha com Naomi Campbell.
Com apenas 20 anos, Roberta já colecciona na sua jovem carreira nomes como Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood e Elie Saab.
Agenciada em Nova Iorque, Paris e Milão, confessa que gosta "de
sentir a adrenalina da passerelle", onde desfila o seu maior atributo – pernas longas, elegantes e morenas. Com o seu corpo talhado à medida da mais alta costura, a sua postura esbelta, o seu
andar confiante e o seu rosto de traços quentes, Roberta convenceu as grandes casas de moda europeias. E conseguiu posar
nas páginas da Vogue italiana.
"Quando piso a passerelle, transformo-me noutra pessoa", admite.
Enquanto desfila, representa no corpo a marca que veste, na alma
as cores da bandeira de Angola, e no rosto a beleza das mulheres
angolanas. E entre os dissabores da moda – um sapato que escorregou, um vestido que mostrou demasiado – a modelo carrega ao
peito a responsabilidade de ser a jovem do outro lado do espelho
de muitas adolescentes angolanas, que também sonham pisar passerelles internacionais. Às quais deixa um conselho: "Sejam sempre
vocês mesmas". Para a modelo, "não existem mulheres feias".

She turned from a girl into a successful model, seeing her
dream come true. Her perfect figure has brought her the most
sought after jobs. Her Haute Couture debut was walking for
Valentino in Paris, and when she wore Prada she was one of
only four black models wearing that brand – a distinction she
shares with Naomi Campbell.
Although she is only 20 years old, she has already strut the
runway in garments by illustrious names such as Louis Vuitton,
Vivienne Westwood and Elie Saab. She works out of New York,
Paris and Milan and confesses that she likes 'the catwalk adrenalin' when she parades her greatest asset, her long, shapely
legs. A figure that could almost have been purposely carved for
Haute Couture, combines with her elegant posture, confident
stride and stunning looks to enable Roberta to win over the
most renowned European fashion houses. She's even appeared in the Italian edition of renowned fashion magazine Vogue.
'When I walk down the runway, I turn into someone else', she
admits. While she represents those griffes heart and soul, her
heart inside wears the colours of the Angolan flag and her face
symbolises the beauty of all Angolan women. Despite her share of fashion faux-pas, such as a shoe that slipped out or an over-revealing gown – she takes seriously the responsibility of being the young woman on the other side of the mirror for many Angolan teens who are dreaming of joining
her on international runways. Her advice for them: 'Always be yourself, there is no such thing as an ugly woman'.
She admits that she isn't obsessed with diet or a beauty regime. Off the runway, she dresses in a casual and comfortable fashion and carries herself naturally. She doesn't pay undue attention to labels on her own clothes, orienting

Confessa não ser obcecada na alimentação nem na beleza. Fora
das passerelles, adopta um look natural, um estilo confortável e
uma postura descontraída. Quando se veste, não olha a marcas,
tendo apenas em conta o seu gosto pessoal. É como se existissem
duas pessoas diferentes: a que se produz, que olha a moda nos
olhos e veste haute Couture, e a que prefere estar ao natural, ter
os pés bem assentes na terra e viver na simplicidade. Mas o lema
de vida é o mesmo: “Eu e o meu bem-estar primeiro”.
Apesar de concordar que “a moda vive de aparências”, Roberta afirma que é um mundo onde se aprende todos os dias: “A
Moda mudou a minha vida, mas não me mudou como pessoa”.
Curiosamente, não fosse a sua entrada precoce nas passerelles, gostava de ter tirado um curso de Engenharia Agrónoma
– sonho que mantém guardado. Mas acredita que a sua relação
com a moda ainda não tem prazo de validade.
Modelo com classe na sua simplicidade, Roberta Narciso promete
continuar a desfilar a sua beleza pelo mundo, ao ritmo angolano.

herself mainly by her own taste. It's as though she had two
personalities: one who dresses herself to the nines, stares
the fashion world in the face and wears Haute Couture, and
then one who prefers to feel at ease, with her feet firmly
planted on the ground, living a simple life. But her motto never changes: 'Me and my well-being come first'.
Although 'fashion lives off of appearances', Roberta agrees
that the fashion world teaches her something every day.
'Fashion had changed my life, but it hasn't changed me as a
person'. Curiously, if she hadn't stepped onto the catwalks
at such a tender age, she would have liked to have studied
Agricultural Engineering – it's an objective which she hasn't
quite given up on just yet. But she also feels that her relationship with the fashion world is here to stay.
Roberta Narciso is a model with class and candour who intends to keep parading her beauty around the world, to the
beat of Angola.
