SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER´S NOTE

Contemporary Africa & Ancient Egypt
Dear Parents,
Did you know that Egypt is located in Africa? Did you know Africa is a continent with 55 States?
Since last March our T1 students are developing a fascinating project about Africa. They are learning about
geographic, historic, cultural, political and economic aspects of this huge continent, and to make it even more
challenging and interesting, we are putting a special focus on the Ancient Egypt. Students will learn about their
architecture, government, religion and system of writing.
Beyond the language acquisition, there are others learning expectations we will work up to achieve on this second
quarter, such as:
Teamwork: students will be encouraged to interact during the project process and to develop their teamwork and
cooperation skills.
Reading/ Writing: Reading is critical in order to build knowledge in Social Studies. In cooperation with the discipline
Language Arts, students will be encouraged to read about the themes proposed, identify the main ideas of a text,
learn the specific vocabulary, take notes and write short summaries.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: students will develop metacognitive skills by integrating visual information
(maps, pictures, videos) with the texts they will read or produce.

África Contemporânea e Antigo Egito
Queridos pais,
Vocês sabiam que o Egito está localizado na África? Vocês sabiam que a África é um continente com 55 países?
Desde março nossos alunos de T1 estão desenvolvendo um projeto fascinante sobre a África. Eles estão aprendendo
sobre os aspectos geográficos, históricos, culturais e econômicos deste enorme continente, e para tornar esse projeto
ainda mais desafiador e interessante, estamos dando um foco especial ao Antigo Egito. Os alunos aprenderão sobre
sua arquitetura, governo, religião e forma de escrita.
Além da aquisição do idioma, trabalharemos para que outras expectativas de aprendizagem sejam alcançadas no
segundo bimestre, como:
Trabalho em equipe: os alunos serão incentivados a interagir durante todo o processo de elaboração do projeto, de
forma a desenvolver suas habilidades de trabalho em equipe e cooperação.
Leitura/ Escrita: a leitura é crucial para o aprendizado da disciplina de “ Social Studies”. Em parceria com a disciplina
de “Language Arts”, os alunos serão incentivados a ler sobre os temas propostos, identificar as principais ideias do
texto, aprender o vocabulário específico, tomar notas e escrever pequenos resumos.
Integração entre Conhecimento e Ideias: os alunos desenvolverão habilidades metacognitivas integrando
informações visuais (mapas, imagens e vídeos) com textos que eles irão ler ou produzir.
