OK, welcome back. This is lesson BL-022. If you are using the DVD then please print out

In this lesson we are going to be looking at some licks in Position Three that come from
the Minor Pentatonic and from the Blues Scale to give you some examples of how to use
it. Because it is really important that you don't just learn the scales but that you learn
how to use them. That's the big thing. And a lot of people with Position Three they just
run up and down the scale. They are not playing anything interesting in Position Three
because “ooh, it's difficult. I'm only cool in Position One”. That's no good.

Let me take you through the five licks that we are going to be learning in this lesson
and then I will go to a close up and explain each one a little more fully. Lick one sounds
like this . . . Lick two . . . Lick three . . . Lick four . . . And lick five . . . So let's go to a
close up and check out these licks.

Lick number one is starting here with the third finger doing a tone bend . . . Then we
have got here first finger playing the note D on the tenth fret, thinnest string. Second
finger playing the twelfth fret of the thinnest string. Then this is followed by the third
finger going back onto that note C which is at the thirteenth fret. But this time it is
doing a curl . . . One of those tiny, little bends. Followed by first finger back on the root
note. The lick really slowly . . . The rhythm, of course, is one, two and three, four . . .
Little bit faster . . . You could even probably go faster . . .

Lick number two starts here with the third finger on the thinnest string and we are going
fingers three, two, one on the twelfth, eleventh and tenth frets . . . Then we have got
our third finger back on our old friend the note C here on the thirteenth fret second
string. This is going to do a full bend . . . First finger tenth fret, which is incidentally the
same note you just bent to. A good way of checking your bend. Then we are going to
have thirteen . . . Ten on the second string . . . Followed by a bend with the third finger
on the twelfth fret of the third string delivering a tone bend and then finishing with the
first finger back on the root note.

The rhythm is a little odd because we have got two triplets and then two eighth notes
and then finishing on the root note. So the rhythm is going to be one-trip-let, two-triplet, three and four. One-trip-let, two-trip-let, three and four . . .

Lick number three is starting here with our third finger on the twelfth fret of the third
string delivering a full bend . . . Followed by little finger here on the thirteenth fret of
the second string . . . First finger, thinnest string, tenth fret . . . Back . . . Dropping
down to first finger at the ninth fret . . . Now we have to perform a little roll here. So we
put the third finger a little flatter than normal at the twelfth fret of the fourth string . . .
Then roll it onto the tip . . . First finger curl, tenth fret, fourth string . . . The whole lick
nice and slow . . . Again . . . And a little faster . . .

Lick number four is starting here with the third finger on the twelfth fret and it is
delivering a flick off to the first finger on the ninth fret . . . Then third finger, twelfth
fret, fourth string and then back to the note E at the ninth fret of the third string . . .
The first four notes . . . Now the next little part can be quite fun. This is a way of
accessing our Blue Note here. You can either do a very quick little slide . . . with the
third finger. It slides up one fret and back again . . . Good thing to practice. It has a
very funky sound . . . Or you can bend it . . . So the lick you end up with is . . . Or . . .
You can see it is a really cool idea this. The idea of just having a quick slide . . . Or a
bend . . . A little bit faster . . . Or . . . It becomes kind of like a flicking . . . motion. A
fun kind of lick that one.
O lick número quarto começa aqui com o terceiro dedo no no décimo segundo traste e
faz-se um “flick off” (pull off) para o primeiro dedo no nono traste . . . Depois terceiro
dedo, décimo segundo traste, quarta corda e depois de volta à nota Mi no nono traste

And for the last lick. Lick number five. This is a sixteenth note lick with lots of hammer
ons and flick offs. We are starting here with the first finger on the tenth fret. We are
hammering down second finger at the eleventh which is the Blue Note and then flicking
it off again . . . Third finger reaching over to the the thirteenth fret . . . And then back to
the tenth fret . . . Then we have got thirteen to ten flick off . . . Twelfth fret which is
going to be second finger this time . . . Back to the tenth fret, second string . . .
Hammer on and flick off . . . Second finger again, twelfth fret going back to the note at
the tenth fret which is the note A, the root note. That lick again . . . And again . . . A
little faster . . . And fast . . .

Well I hope you have enjoyed running through those licks in Position Three. The big deal
here to remember is that you have to use them Of course you need to practice the lick
first and get it under your fingers so you can play it and you get all your bends in tune
and the curls are right and there are not any extra strings ringing out and all that sort of
thing. But once you have done that the big, key thing here is to use a backing track and
make sure you practice your licks along with a backing track so you actually learn how
to use them.

A good thing to be working on as well is going from licks that you have got in Position
One, licks that you have got in Position Two. Head up to Position Three, chuck in a
couple of licks and then get back down to where you feel comfortable in Positions One
and Two. Really, really good way to practice. So have fun with those. Make sure that
you check those out thoroughly and can use those licks well before you check out the
next lesson where we are going to be talking about Position Four. Starting to head up
