the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology, gained official
recognition by all the signatories to the Seoul Accord, at the Seoul Accord
General Meeting, which was held in Turkey in June. In 2013 the programme was
accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
The Seoul Accord is a mutual rec-ognition agreement which pertains to
computing and IT-related programmes accredited by its signatories within their
jurisdictions since 2008. Currently there are eight sign atories to the Seoul
Accord, namely the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia,
Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Japan, and South Korea.[…]
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (full-time) programme offered by
UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology satisfies the academic requirements for
entry to the Australian Computer Society, the Canadian Information Processing
Society, and the British Computer Society. It also satisfies the academic
requirements for registering as a professional engineer in Hong Kong and Japan.

Portuguese language professors teaching at universities across Southeast
Asia gathered in Macau […] to exchange ideas and develop a common
communication platform, as they acknowledge the growing interest in learning
the Portuguese language within the region.
João Soares, who currently teaches at Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta, said
that Portuguese language teaching has developed there, with a growing number
of students enrolling in his courses.
[…] Delivering a talk on Friday at the Portuguese Consulate’s auditorium, the
teacher stressed the need to establish a communication platform, which would
enable Portuguese language teachers in Asia to share ideas and teaching
materials.
One of the challenges faced by his students, he acknowledged, is indeed to find
ways to actually practice and speak Portuguese outside the classroom.
Frisando que Macau tem um
papel estratégico na relação
entre a China e os países de
Língua portuguesa, o Director de
Centro Pedagógico e Científico
da Língua Portuguesa do IPM ,
Carlos André, pretende que esta
seja uma liderança sobretudo
na produção de materiais para
ensino do Português e na
formação de docentes.
Professor Luís Pires, who teaches Portuguese in Shanghai, […] acknowledged
that more and more Portuguese courses have been made available in recent
years in mainland China. Having produced a thesis on the matter, Mr Pires
concluded that e-learning by itself wouldn’t be enough to engage students,
but he suggested that learning tools and content should be provided on a
wide range of platforms, including digital tools, since many young students use
mobile phones and other electronic devices daily.

The Madrid-based World Tourism
Organisation (UNWTO) will provide
internships for five students of the
Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT)
every year, Secretary for Social
Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam
Chon Weng said on Monday [12
October, 2015].
The policy secretary made the
announcement before attending the
Global Tourism Economy Forum’s
welcome dinner, which was hosted
by the local government at the
Grand Hyatt Macau in Cotai.
According to Tam, selected students will work as interns at the
international body’s headquarters in
the Spanish capital for six months.
Tam also said part of the IFT’s new
facilities on the former University of
Macau (UM) campus in Taipa will
be used as a training centre for
UNWTO officials and tourism sector
staff, adding that the government
would conduct tourism studies with
the international body.
He said the institute currently offers
the largest number of programmes
recognised by the UNWTO, compared to similar kinds of higher
education institutions all over the
world.
“They [the UNWTO officials] know
that the Macau Institute for Tourism
Studies [IFT] is very successful…
[that is why] they want to set up a
world-class training centre with us,”
Tam said.
