THE SCHOOL
The School of Arts and Design (ESAD.CR) belongs to the
Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. It was founded in 1990. The
importance of ceramics in the region and the great artistic
and cultural heritage of Caldas da Rainha, were the determining factors for its location.
Pedagogical Building 1, in 1997.
It aims to create an alternative approach to the vision of the
art world. With its innovations in educational activities,
ESAD.CR is a renowned school of national and international
importance.
Installed on a campus nestled between pine trees and
a short distance from the center of Caldas da Rainha,
ESAD.CR has several buildings, including the original
complex who won the prestigious SECIL Prize in architecture 1998, designed century, by the architect Victor Figueiredo.
HISTORY
Where the Library ESAD.CR is today was once a “general”
ward for patients.
The building dates from the nineteenth century and whose
architect was Rodrigo Berquó.

In the area of audiovisual exist: cameras, tripods, microphones, portable recorders, lighting equipment, projectors
video, transparencies, slides and opaque, televisions and
readers (VHS, DVD, MiniDV, DVCam), as well as 10 editing
stations equipped with the essential hardware and software
(Premiere, Final Cut, DVDLab Pro, Photoshop, Pyramix,
ProTools).
This workshop is equipped with the necessary material
for the realization of audiovisual projects.

The Ceramic Plaster and Glass Workshop, is divided into:

There are also a number of equipment supports from
modeling tools, tools to glass laminator, spinneret, oven,
scales, table lathes, electric potter's wheel and craft,

among others. All these materials are for the exclusive use
of this specialization.

The engraving and screen printing workshop is divided into
two spaces:
1 - Engraving room (r.3)
1 - Screen printing room (r.5)
The screen printing workshop is a specific space to carry
out manual screen printing technique. The main materials
used are the following: five manual printing machines,
2 dryers grid, a compressor wash. An awareness table,
a washing machine to pressure, 132 aluminum screens
(silks) in various formats.
The Printmaking Workshop is a specific space for working
manually several relief printing techniques. This space
has five presses for the five respective techniques: Lithography (stone), Calcogravura (metal), Woodcut (wood),
Linocuts (linoleum), and binding (artist's book). And has
the following equipment: 1 woodcut printing press - Polymetal, a calcogravura press - Petervanginkel, linoleum
press 1, press 1 binding, a washing tank for acids, 2 dryers
grid, a computer, a printer, 1scanner, a lithographic printing press petervanginkel.

The Photography Space is divided into:

Requests (r. 44).
Analog Photography Labs have 32 black and white enlargers, 5 color enlargers and a large format enlarger. This
space have conditions to develop film and enlarge/develop
paper.
The Digital Photography Labs allows scanning film from all
formats, editing and post-production image.
The Photography Studio allows shooting various types of
objects, with flash lights or tungsten. There are various
auxiliary materials such as reflectors, diffusers, backgrounds, tents, tripods, among others.

The Digital Workshop offers a wide range of equipment
that allows to develop graphic and product models: guillotines, x-acts of shredded, binders, laminator, lightboxes;
as well as materials that support graphic composition:
Pantone catalog, spectrophotometric Pantone, color
calibrator, print and monitors; six computers equipped
with specialized software; printers proof/print speed,
printers for technical design, quality printer camera and
a cutting plotter vinyl.

The Wood Workshop has equipment that is divided into
three groups: hand tools, portable electric machinery and
static electrical machines (large).
The technological equipment which outfits the wood
workshop, aims to work any type of natural wood and its
derivatives, such as MDF, chipboard, "Platex" (cluster fiber
hard), OSB, plywood, laminated between others.

The Metal Workshop has a range of equipment that enable
to carry out projects with alloys ferrous and nonferrous
of all shapes by conventional metal working processes and
blacksmithing allowing the possibility of cutting, welding,
machining, quinine, bending, forging, grinding, etc.

The theatre workshop is a multidisciplinary space, which
offers a variety of technical solutions such as: fixed web
totally electrified and DMX circuit, dimmer's cabinet, table
patch, drapery walls "waterproofing" the room from outside
sources light, light projectors, lightboxes, rack's dimmer,
pedestals, various cables, as well as props and scenery.

The Prototype Lab is equipped with a ZCORP the Z450 3D
printer indicated to perform prototypes for formal evaluation that works with gypsum-based materials and a 3D
scanning device.
The lab focuses part of its prototyping objectives in the
transfer of knowledge produced materialized by design
students on innovative products based on concepts of
quality and methodology production consistent with environmental rules and ergonomic.

The Library, with a capacity of 125 seats offers readers a
reading room of monographs, a reading room for periodicals, an audiovisual room which has two DVD viewing
stations, a computer room with 32 computers to perform
work and Internet consultation of the and has a reading
area Informal newspapers and magazines in the lobby.
Under the support of the courses taught at the School, the
Library find not only books but also scientific magazines
and technical magazines and newspapers in general and
still films and documentaries on VHS and DVD.
The Library offers to the readers a wide range of services,
such as home loans, loan INTERCAMPUS (allows the loan
of works from other IPL libraries), interlibrary loan (the
loan allows libraries of books by other national or foreign),
renewals and reservations online through Book Collective
of SDIPL, photocopy and print self-service training for
users, reference service, among others.

The Social Services (SAS) are a IPL unit which aims
contribute to ensuring equal opportunities of access,
attendance and academic achievement to students entering integrated schools, providing conditions that allow us
to overcome economic and social inequalities.
The third campus cafeteria is open for lunch from 12:00am
to 2:00pm and dinner from 7:00pm. to 9:00pm. The price of
the lunch ticket is 2.40 Euros, if purchased the day before
and 2.90 Euros on the same day. The bar is open from
8:00am until 9:00pm.

The history of Caldas da Rainha dates back to the 15th
century, having as protagonist the Queen Leonor, wife
D. John II of Portugal. In one of her journeys between
Batalha and Óbidos, in the year 1484, the Queen noticed
a group of people who bathed in a source os water with
a nauseating odor, its rich waters sulfur for treating lung
diseases and skin. Noting that these waters were
an important role in healing the sick, the Queen decided
to build a thermal hospital. Thus was born a small town
that would later be called Caldas da Rainha. Another
important factor in the evolution of the village, was the
abundance of clay in the region, which allowed the
creation of many ceramic industries. associate this art
comes the name Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846 -1905),
an artist who marks the era of contemporary ceramics.
Caldas da Rainha belongs to the district of Leiria,
is divided into 16 parishes.

The School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha was
a vehicle for the launch of this line of contemporary art.

The Berlengas archipelago is located at 16 km from Peniche. It consists of three small islands: Grande Berlenga,

Alcobaça belongs to Leiria district, and is divided into 18

Emphasizing its Gothic monastery, founded by D. Afonso
Henriques in 1148 and completed in 1222.
Inside the church of the monastery are the tombs of "eternal love" of the King Pedro (1320-1367) and D. Inês
de Castro (1320-1355). Since 2007, the monastery of Alcobaça is one of 7 Wonders of Portugal.
