PATRÍCIA ALMEIDA
All Beauty Must Die
(room 3)
OPENING SATURDAY 30 APRIL 16H
3 MAY –11 JUNE 2011
TUESDAY – SATURDAY 15-20H
All Beauty Must Die, de Patrícia Almeida
(in collaboration with David-Alexandre Guéniot)
This exhibition at Galeria Pedro Oliveira is part of a larger project collecting a set of works (including photography, video, serigraphy and books); the creation and collection
process began in 2009 under the title All Beauty Must Die. This title is a reference to the lyrics of Nick Cave’s Where the Wild Roses Grow, a duet with Kylie Minogue released
with Nick Cave’s 1996 record Murder Ballads, but also to John Keats’ Ode on Melancholy (“She dwells with Beauty – Beauty that must die”).
Its first presentation at the Museu Colecção Berardo, in 2010, as part of the BESphoto award, included photographs, a video and posters with pop song lyrics and poetry of the
English Romantic period, aiming to evoke an idyllic atmosphere inspired by the ideals of youth and nature.
This exhibition included a wall set in place by the museum where visitors could scribble their comments on the show. This led to the decision of collecting these texts left by the
anonymous visitors, and the second moment of the All Beauty Must Die project was set in motion. The idea was to create an indie book of sorts, referencing the world of
fanzines, by using a set of highly contrasted black and white images that establish a dialogue with anonymous phrases, be they love messages, political slogans, testimonies,
random thoughts, quotes or simple creative acts. The underlying intention was to combine these texts and images and broaden, deviate and amplify the possibility of constructing
new senses and meanings, by transversally intertwining references ranging from classical music and romanticism to popular culture and contemporary rock music.
PATRÍCIA ALMEIDA (b. 1970)
Lives and works in Lisbon.
Patrícia Almeida is interested in documental photography as a territory of research and artistic creation; her early works delve into the relationship between the individual and
urban spaces. This premise is visible in her first book, NO PARKING, published in 2004, a project developed in Tokyo under a scholarship of the Fundação Oriente; and also in
her first individual exhibit, Locations (2007) at the Kgaleria in Lisbon, following an invitation by photographer António Júlio Duarte. In 2008 Patrícia produced the PORTOBELLO
series, a project comprising 70 photographs, video and slide projections, exploring the idealization of “branded locations” promoted as summer tourist destinations. This project
was subsequently self-published in 2009 and exhibited at the ZDB gallery in Lisbon, and also at Art Algarve, where it was presented by the Fundação de Serralves; this in turn
garnered the project a nomination for the prestigious BESphoto award in 2010. The nomination would lead to the presentation of her latest project, All Beauty Must Die, at the
Museu Colecção Berardo, also in 2010. Patrícia Almeida’s work is part of several renowned collections, including those of PLMJ, the Fundação de Serralves, the BESart
collection, the collection of the Centro de Artes Visuais (Visual Arts Centre) and the collection of the Centro Português de Fotografia (Portuguese Photography Centre).
