A UMinho, na sua juventude madura, vem percorrendo um
caminho de crescente afirmação do seu projeto de universidade
completa, nas vertentes do ensino, da investigação e da interação
com diferentes comunidades. A UMinho é uma instituição que
queremos participada, sustentável, inclusiva e eficiente.
Esta nossa ideia de universidade, que visa cumprir a missão
estatutária de contribuir para a construção de um modelo de
sociedade baseado em princípios humanistas, que tenha o
saber, a criatividade e a inovação como fatores de crescimento,
desenvolvimento sustentável, bem-estar e solidariedade, requer
que sejamos uma instituição universalista e aberta ao mundo.
Por isso, a internacionalização está fortemente imbricada na
nossa cultura institucional e é trabalhada quotidianamente nas
dimensões da nossa atividade, algumas das quais são assinaladas
nesta revista comemorativa do nosso 41º aniversário.
Throughout these years, UMinho has gradually emerged
as a full university in the areas of education, research
and interaction with different communities. UMinho is
an institution that has become participative, sustainable,
inclusive and efficient.
This idea of university that seeks to accomplish the statutory
mission of contributing to the construction of a model
of society based on humanistic principles, which include
knowledge, creativity and innovation as factors of growth,
sustainable development, welfare and solidarity, leads to a
universal institution open to the world.
Therefore, internationalisation is strongly intertwined in our
institutional culture and is daily crafted within our activities,
some of which are highlighted in this commemorative
magazine of our 41st anniversary.
Somos internacionais na diversidade de origem dos nossos
alunos (vindos de 83 países, dos cinco continentes), na rede de
instituições com quem mantemos intercâmbio de estudantes,
na proveniência de membros dos nossos corpos de docentes
e de investigadores. Somos internacionais nos projetos de
ensino que desenvolvemos, conjuntamente ou em articulação
com instituições de todo o mundo, em diferentes quadros de
cooperação, ainda que conferindo especial atenção aos países de
língua oficial portuguesa. Somos internacionais na investigação
que fazemos, seja nos nossos laboratórios, em instituições
parceiras ou nos mais diversos locais, onde e sempre a procura de
conhecimento o justifique. Somos internacionais na atividade que
mantemos com empresas e com organizações de todo o mundo.
Somos internacionais nas atividades culturais e desportivas com
que afirmamos a UMinho e Portugal no mundo. Protagonizamos,
enfim, uma atividade de internacionalização que os rankings
que nos avaliam reconhecem, posicionando-nos muito

We are international in terms of diversity of our foreign students
(coming from 83 countries throughout the five continents), the
network of institutions with which we exchange students, and the
origin of our teaching staff and researchers.
We are international in the educational projects we undertake
jointly or in conjunction with institutions around the world,
in different cooperation frameworks, although with special
emphasis on Portuguese speaking countries.
We are international in the research we carry out, whether in
our laboratories, at partner institutions or at different locations,
wherever and whenever the demand for knowledge is justified.
We are international in the activity we perform with companies
and organisations worldwide.
We are international in cultural and sporting activities in which we
are able to strengthen UMinho and Portugal’s position in the world.
Finally, we develop an activity of internationalisation which is
recognised by the rankings that evaluate us, thus positioning UMinho
very favourably in comparison to universities around the world.
Esta vocação internacional não substitui, antes potencia, uma
estratégia de grande compromisso com o desenvolvimento
da Região que servimos e das cidades que nos acolhem. Aqui
estão as nossas raízes e as raízes da história de Portugal. Aqui
combinamos história, cultura e tradição com o futuro que o
conhecimento que produzimos e ensinamos promove. A partir

A UMinho assume convictamente a sua missão no contexto
de uma ambição realista de crescimento e de afirmação
internacional. Nas próximas páginas, testemunharemos aspetos
do percurso de consolidação do caminho que vimos seguindo,
o qual, ao longo do ano de 2014, se refletiu no estabelecimento
de ligações com parceiros estratégicos além-fronteiras e no
reforço de laços já tecidos no passado. Assinalamos também o
desempenho da UMinho no âmbito desportivo, que permitiu um
expressivo reconhecimento internacional.
UMinho strongly assumes its mission within a realistic ambition
aimed towards growth and international promotion. In the following
pages, we will witness some aspects of UMinho’s consolidation
process, which, during 2014, was reflected in international strategic
partnerships and in the strengthening of ties already woven in the
past. We also highlight UMinho’s performance in sports, which led
to a significant international recognition.

Internationalisation

New Challenges
A internacionalização do ensino é um vetor estratégico de
desenvolvimento da Universidade do Minho.
The internationalisation of education is a strategic development
vector of the University of Minho.
De facto, a UMinho tem estado fortemente envolvida nos
programas Erasmus, Erasmus Mundus, Leonardo da Vinci e, a partir
de 2014, no Erasmus+ e no Iacobus (mobilidade Norte de Portugal –
Galiza), o que tem permitido promover a mobilidade internacional
dos alunos da UMinho e, simultaneamente, acolher um crescente
número de estudantes estrangeiros. Este enquadramento tem
possibilitado, igualmente, a mobilidade de docentes.
In fact, UMinho has been heavily involved in the Erasmus,
Erasmus Mundus, Leonardo da Vinci programmes and, from
2014, in the Erasmus+ and Iacobus (mobility Northern Portugal
- Galicia). These programmes have allowed for the international
mobility of UMinho students and, simultaneously, for receiving a
growing number of foreign students. Moreover, this framework
has enabled the mobility of lecturers.
A internacionalização do ensino vem sendo igualmente
impulsionada através do desenvolvimento de programas
em associação, de acordos de dupla titulação e de cotutelas
envolvendo universidades estrangeiras. Noutro contexto,
a UMinho tem vindo a participar com bastante sucesso no
Programa de Licenciaturas Internacionais (PLI), o qual visa a
capacitação de estudantes brasileiros de licenciaturas em várias
áreas das ciências e humanidades.
The internationalisation of education has also been driven by
the development of programs in partnership, namely double
degree agreements and joint supervision involving foreign
universities. In another context, UMinho has participated with
great success in the Program of International Degrees (Programa
de Licenciaturas Internacionais, PLI), which aims at training
Brazilian undergraduate students in various fields of sciences and
humanities.
No entanto, a recente publicação de legislação nacional relativa
ao estudante internacional requer uma abordagem renovada.
Torna-se agora possível oferecer a alunos estrangeiros, neste
novo quadro legal, a possibilidade de frequentar cursos de
licenciatura e mestrado integrado. O desafio de curto prazo é o de
tornar evidente a excelência do ensino e investigação da UMinho
para potenciais candidatos, bem como a atratividade das cidades
jovens e dinâmicas em que está sediada. A médio prazo, a aposta
é a criação de ofertas específicas para este tipo de estudantes,
incluindo cursos em língua inglesa.
However, the recent publication of national legislation on
international students requires a renewed approach. In this
new legal framework, it is possible to offer international
students the opportunity to attend undergraduate and
integrated masters degrees. The short-term challenge will be
to convey the excellence in teaching and research of UMinho,
as well as the attractiveness of the young and dynamic cities
in which is based. In the medium-term the challenge will
be the development of specific courses for these students,
including degrees in English.
Importa ainda assinalar que a UMinho está igualmente a abraçar
novos desafios associados à globalização e novas tipologias de
ensino, como é o caso da recente aposta na oferta em cursos
online, que permitirão a obtenção de certificação no âmbito
de cursos não conferentes de grau. A este nível, o desafio será
o de levar o nome da UMinho para o espaço educativo virtual
internacional, captando alunos ativamente empenhados na sua
formação ao longo da vida.
Finally, it is noteworthy that UMinho is also embracing new
challenges associated with the globalization and new types
of education, as it is the case of the recent effort in offering
online courses that will allow for certification within non-degree
courses. At this level, the challenge will be to take the UMinho
name to the international virtual educational space, capturing
students actively engaged in their education throughout life.

“Transformar os mecanismos de governação”
“Transforming the mechanisms of governance”
A Unidade Operacional da UNU em Governação Eletrónica (UNUEGOV) foi estabelecida por decisão do Conselho da UNU, após
a assinatura de acordos bilaterais entre a UNU e a República
Portuguesa, em maio de 2014. O seu objetivo central é apoiar
o sistema das NU e os Estados membros para transformar os
mecanismos de governação, bem como construir capacidades
de governação eficazes, através da aplicação estratégica das
tecnologias de informação e comunicação, de forma a contribuir
para o desenvolvimento social e o desenvolvimento económico
inclusivos, a sustentabilidade ambiental, a paz e a segurança.
Para este fim, a UNU-EGOV encontra-se envolvida em cinco
tipos de atividades: 1) investigação relevante para as políticas;
2) conversão de resultados de investigação em instrumentos de
política; 3) desenvolvimento de capacidades; 4) desenvolvimento
e manutenção de redes de investigação e de políticas para
partilhar experiências, promoção da aprendizagem mútua,
e criação de pontes entre os mundos da investigação e das
políticas; e 5) acompanhamento e disseminação dos resultados e
do impacto das suas atividades.

The UNU Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic
Governance (UNU-EGOV) was established by decision of
the UNU Council and following the signing of bilateral
agreements between the UNU and the Portuguese Republic
in May 2014. Its central purpose is to support the UN system
and member states in transforming the mechanisms of
governance and building effective governance capabilities
through strategic applications of information and
communication technologies to contribute to inclusive
social development, inclusive economic development,
environmental sustainability, and peace and security. To
this end, UNU-EGOV engages in five types of activities: 1)
policy-relevant research; 2) translation of research findings
into policy instruments; 3) capacity building; 4) building
and maintaining research and policy networks to share the
lessons learnt, foster mutual learning, and bridge research
and policy worlds; and 5) monitoring and dissemination of
the outcomes and impact of its activities.
A Universidade das Nações Unidas é um “think tank” global
e uma organização de ensino pós-graduado, criada em 1972
para contribuir, através da pesquisa e educação colaborativas,
da divulgação e dos serviços de consultoria, para resolver os
problemas globais prementes da sobrevivência, desenvolvimento
e bem-estar humanos.
The United Nations University is a global think tank and
postgraduate teaching organization established in 1972 to
contribute, through collaborative research and education,
dissemination, and advisory services, to efforts to resolve the
pressing global problems of human survival, development and
welfare.

O caminho
A ideia de acolher na UMinho um polo da UNU começou como um
midsummer night’s dream, fruto de uma longa colaboração com
o UNU-IIST em Macau e impulsionado pela energia inesgotável
da Sara Fernandes. A partir de 2012 juntámos colegas, batemos a
muitas portas e preparámo-nos para ir a jogo: a UNU anunciara a
possibilidade de formação de um polo em e-gov e diversos países se
posicionavam para o acolher. Portugal não era o mais óbvio candidato.
No entanto, o empenho da Reitoria, o apoio do Governo, da
CCDR-N, da CMG, permitiram mobilizar os fundos necessários
em tempo de escassez, abrir as portas de um novo espaço, em
Couros, verdadeiramente excecional, negociar parcerias, e assim,
aos poucos, ir transformando a nossa fraqueza em força, uma
súbita miragem num projeto sustentado. A instalação de uma
unidade da AMA em Couros, no seguimento deste processo,
permite-nos hoje projetar um “e-Gov Innovation Hub”, como uma
marca global sediada na UMinho, capaz de articular sinergias e
desenvolver o enorme potencial que esta área comporta.

Uma visão pessoal
Como argentina que sou, deslocar-me para Portugal depois de 10
anos a viver em Macau significava reativar com as minhas raízes
latinas – a cultura local, a interação com as pessoas em “Portunhol”
e a atmosfera portuguesa. Fiquei comovida com a calorosa receção
que recebi dos meus colegas, funcionários e órgãos diretivos da
Universidade do Minho, de funcionários do governo em Lisboa e
Guimarães e dos meus vizinhos em Guimarães, que felizmente
me ajudaram na acomodação. Agradeço também as excelentes
condições de trabalho oferecidas no campus de Couros. Desejo que
a UNU-EGOV se torne um trunfo importante para Portugal e estou
orgulhosa de fazer parte deste projeto.

The path
The idea of hosting

at UMinho a UNU centre began as a “midsummer
night’s dream”. It was the result of a long collaboration with UNU-IIST in
Macau, and driven by the inexhaustible energy of Sara Fernandes. From
2012 onwards, we gathered some colleagues, knocked on many doors
and prepared ourselves to take action: UNU announced the possibility of
creating a centre in e-gov, and several countries positioned themselves
as potential hosts. Portugal was not the most obvious candidate.
However, the commitment of the Rectorate, the support of the
Government, of the North Regional Coordination and Development
Commission (CCDR-N) and of the Town Council of Guimarães
(CMG) allowed us to: mobilise the funds needed in an economically
difficult time, open the doors of a new exceptional space in Couros,
and, finally, negotiate partnerships in order to gradually transform
our weakness into strength - a sudden mirage in a sustainable
project. The presence of a unit of the Agency for Administrative
Modernisation (AMA) in Couros, as a result of this process, allows us
today to design an “e-Gov Innovation Hub” as a global brand based
at UMinho, capable of articulating synergies and developing the
enormous potential that this area holds.

A personal view
As an Argentinean, moving to Portugal after 10 years of living
in Macao meant reconnecting with my Latin roots - local
culture, interaction with people in “Portuñol”, and Portuguese
atmosphere. I was touched by the warm welcome I received
from my colleagues, staff and authorities of the University of
Minho, from government officials in Lisbon and Guimarães,
and from my neighbours in Guimarães who happily assisted
me in settling down. I also appreciate excellent working
conditions in the Couros Campus. I wish that UNU-EGOV
becomes an important asset to Portugal and I am proud to be
part of this project.

O Instituto Confúcio, definido estatutariamente como unidade
diferenciada da Universidade do Minho, foi instituído em 2006, no
quadro de um protocolo firmado pela Universidade e pelo Hanban
(Gabinete Nacional de Divulgação da Língua Chinesa no Mundo).
Statutorily defined as a specialised unit of the University of
Minho, the Confucius Institute was established in 2006 within the
framework of a protocol signed by the University and by Hanban
(National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language).
Reconhecia-se assim a qualidade do percurso que a UMinho vinha
trilhando na área do ensino do chinês, que teve como marcos
essenciais o lançamento do Curso Livre de Língua e Cultura
Chinesas, em 1991, do Curso Bianual de Sinologia, em 1997, da
Licenciatura em Estudos Orientais, a primeira do género em
Portugal, no ano letivo de 2004/05.
The quality of UMinho’s work in the field of Chinese

language
teaching was therefore recognised, in which the launching of a
Course on Chinese Language and Culture in 1991, the Biannual
Sinology Course in 1997, and the Degree in Oriental Studies (the
first of its kind in Portugal) in the academic year 2004/05 were
key defining events.
Desde a sua criação, o Instituto vem desenvolvendo um
intenso programa de iniciativas orientadas para a comunidade
universitária, para as escolas básicas e secundárias e para a
população em geral, no quadro de uma ampla rede de relações que
foi estabelecendo com outros estabelecimentos de ensino, com
instituições da área cultural, com empresas e autarquias, etc.
Since its inception, the Institute has been developing an intensive
programme of initiatives not only aimed at the academic
community, middle and high schools, but also designed for the
population in general as part of the broad network of relations
it has established with other schools, cultural institutions,
businesses and municipalities, amongst others.
Para além do apoio que presta aos projetos de ensino graduado
e pós-graduado da UMinho na área dos estudos chineses, o
Instituto Confúcio desenvolve hoje uma relevante atividade,
na qual sobressaem: o projeto Ensino do Chinês nas Escolas,
que, com o objetivo de desenvolver e aprofundar o ensino de
chinês na edução pré-universitária, abrange 9 escolas básicas e
secundárias, dos distritos de Braga, Porto e Aveiro, num total de
três centenas de alunos; os cursos livres de chinês; os Seminários
sobre a China Contemporânea, dedicados a temas de política
e economia da China atual; a realização dos exames HSK e
HSKK, exames oficiais de língua chinesa que permitem verificar
os níveis de competência em língua chinesa daqueles que os
realizam; iniciativas de divulgação da cultura chinesa, realizadas
com instituições como o Museu do Oriente ou a Biblioteca Lúcio
Craveiro da Silva, com escolas básicas e secundárias ou em
colaboração com autarquias; a organização do Concurso “Chinese
Bridge” em colaboração com a Embaixada da R. P. China; a
publicação de estudos que contribuem para a compreensão da
língua e da cultura chinesas e das relações luso-chinesas.
In addition to the support it provides to UMinho’s graduate
and post-graduate educational projects in Chinese studies, the
Confucius Institute is now developing significant work, in which
stand out: the project Teaching Chinese in Schools, which includes
9 middle and high schools of the districts of Braga, Oporto and
Aveiro (a total of three hundred students) in order to develop and
improve Chinese language skills prior to higher education; Chinese
language courses; Seminars on Contemporary China, dedicated to
political and economic issues of today’s China; the performance
of Chinese written and oral proficiency tests (HSK and HSKK,
respectively) - official examinations which test and rate Chinese
language proficiency; dissemination initiatives of Chinese culture,
conducted in partnership with institutions, such as the Museum of
the Orient or Lúcio Craveiro da Silva Library, with middle and high
schools or in collaboration with the municipalities; organisation
of the competition “Chinese Bridge”, in collaboration with the
Embassy of the People’s Republic of China; the publication of
studies that contribute to the understanding of Chinese language
and culture, and Luso-Chinese relations.
O Instituto Confúcio é hoje uma importante estrutura para a
consolidação da posição da Universidade do Minho na área dos
estudos chineses e para o incremento da compreensão mútua
entre Portugal e a R. P. da China.
The Confucius Institute has become an important framework
for consolidating UMinho’s position in Chinese studies, and for
strengthening mutual understanding between Portugal and the
People’s Republic of China.

Nos espaços
de língua portuguesa
O Plano Estratégico da Universidade do Minho 2020 projeta a
Instituição como universidade internacionalizada, valorizando
“a assunção de quadros de referência internacionalmente
reconhecidos para avaliação das suas várias atividades” e
reconhecendo que “a mobilidade de estudantes, de docentes
e investigadores, a atribuição de graus conjuntos ou duplos,
o desenvolvimento de projetos em parcerias internacionais
supõem a participação sistemática em redes internacionais e a
consolidação da atratividade internacional da Instituição”.
No espaço geopolítico dos países que têm o português como língua
oficial, a presença da Universidade tem sido particularmente
expressiva. A UMinho tem hoje relações institucionais com as
principais instituições de ensino superior dos países da CPLP, que
se corporizam, por exemplo: (i) no apoio ao desenvolvimento de
projetos de ensino de outras instituições, como acontece com a
Universidade Pedagógica de Moçambique ou com a Universidade
Nacional de Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL); (ii) no desenvolvimento
de projetos de ensino pós-graduado orientado para públicos
específicos, em articulação, por exemplo, com a Universidade

The Strategic Plan of the University of Minho in 2020 puts the
institution in the international scene. This plan not only values
“its commitment to applying internationally recognised reference
frameworks to assess its various activities”, but also recognises
that “student, teacher and researcher mobility, the awarding
of joint or double degrees, and the development of projects in
international partnerships require systematic participation in
international networks and consolidation of the institution’s
international attractiveness”.
In the geopolitical space of Portuguese speaking countries, the
presence of the University has been particularly significant.
Today, UMinho has institutional relations with leading higher
education institutions from Portuguese speaking countries,
which embody, for example: (i) the support in the development
of educational projects of other institutions, as the case of the
Pedagogical University of Mozambique or the National University
of East Timor (UNTL); (ii) the development of post-graduate
educational projects for specific audiences, for example, in
conjunction with the Federal Technological University of Paraná,
University of Cape Verde or Higher Military Technical Institute of
Angola; (iii) the support in the qualification of teachers of some
institutions, as the case of the Federal Institute of Education,
Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte or UNTL; (iv) the
double degree programmes or student and teacher exchange.
Cooperation initiatives of this nature, anchored especially in
post-graduate programmes, are therefore important tools
aimed at strengthening cooperation in scientific research.
They are the base for shared research projects or the support
in structuring scientific activity, which UMinho has also been
ensuring in some cases.
All these initiatives, including their diversity of goals, formats
and agents, represent not only an important source of
affirmation of the University of Minho in the global context, but
also its commitment to the internationally shared promotion of
science, education and culture for the sake of building a better
world.

A successful partnership
Na Escola de Engenharia da UMinho, a formação inclui os
doutoramentos e cursos avançados de pós graduação na
área Sistemas de Bioengenharia e também em Engenharia de
Conceção e Sistemas de Fabrico Avançados (EDAM) - Líderes
para as Indústrias Tecnológicas e Gestão de Tecnologia e
Empreendedorismo. Em 2015 juntam-se as áreas de Transportes e
de Sistemas de Energias Sustentáveis. Os cursos são lecionados por
docentes do consórcio das universidades nacionais (Minho, Porto,
Coimbra, Lisboa, Nova de Lisboa), com a colaboração de docentes
do MIT. Incluem módulos intensivos (por exemplo, um mês de
permanência em cada academia) e, em boa parte dos casos, um
estágio nos laboratórios do MIT, em Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In the School of Engineering of UMinho, training includes doctoral and
advanced graduate courses in the fields of Bioengineering Systems
and in Design Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (EDAM)
- Leaders for Technical Industries and Technology Management
and Entrepreneurship. In 2015 the areas of Sustainable Energy and
Transportation Systems will be included. The courses are taught by
professors from the consortium of the national universities (Minho,
Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, and NOVA in Lisbon), in collaboration with MIT
teaching staff. It includes intensive modules (for example, a month’s
stay in each university) and, in most cases, a traineeship in the
laboratories of MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
O Programa MIT Portugal é, desde 2007, uma colaboração bem
sucedida entre o Massachusetts Institute of Technology (EUA)
e a UMinho, entre outras universidades nacionais e a indústria.
As start-ups SilicoLife e WeAdapt ou os projetos Dachor e Rail
Bike Adaptor são exemplos que chegaram ao mercado graças
a esta parceria e que foram premiados. O Programa estimula
o investimento em ciência, tecnologia, inovação e educação
superior, com ênfase em sistemas de engenharia, para alavancar
o desenvolvimento e a competitividade económico-social do país.
Os alunos têm uma formação claramente diferenciadora,
nomeadamente na preparação como empreendedores e líderes,
no ecossistema multicultural e multidisciplinar de trabalho, no
grau elevado de exigência, na ligação ao mercado internacional,
na mobilidade e nas aulas 100% em inglês. “No programa
i-Teams, o estudante tem desde cedo que interagir hands-on
e obter resposta positiva de dez potenciais clientes/parceiros
para o seu projeto-piloto, desde diretores de multinacionais a

preparation as entrepreneurs and leaders in the multicultural
and multidisciplinary working ecosystem, under the highest
standards, in the connection to the international market, in
mobility, as well as in the 100% English classes. “In the i-Teams
programme, the student must early be hands-on and receive
a positive response from ten potential clients/partners - from
directors of multinational businesses to investors and academics
- for his pilot project. This immediately changes the perspective

Programa, em 2011. “Nos próximos anos, estes poderão criar
uma empresa, ser intrepreneurs numa grande instituição ou
mesmo líderes académicos e políticos”, devolve Isabel Rocha. O
método pedagógico é ímpar. Por exemplo, a disciplina Métodos
de Investigação em Engenharia é tão relevante que faz agora
parte de programas doutorais da Escola de Engenharia. O plano
curricular de Isabel Rocha para um estudo pré-plano de negócios,
adaptado à realidade lusa, foi premiado em 2009 e replicado
noutros cursos.
“Students are unanimous in recognising that they complete
their studies with a completely different attitude - for the
better”, states Alexandre Ferreira da Silva, visiting professor of
the School of Engineering at MIT Portugal and the first doctor
of this Programme (2011). “In the coming years, these students
can start a business, be intrapreneurs in a large institution
or be academic and political leaders”, says Isabel Rocha. The
teaching method is unique. For example, the subject Engineering
Research Methods is so relevant that it is now included in
the doctoral programmes of the School of Engineering. Isabel
Rocha’s curriculum for a pre-business plan study (i-teams), which
is adapted to the Portuguese reality, was awarded in 2009 and
replicated in other courses.
A UMinho já acolheu cerca de 150 alunos ao abrigo do MIT
Portugal, atraindo os melhores candidatos nacionais e também
da Polónia, Argentina, Índia, Irão, Brasil e EUA. O corpo docente

carbono que, por ser de espessura atómica e bom condutor, é tido
como uma revolução na investigação tecnológica. O seu estudo
é uma das mais atrativas áreas da Física da Matéria Condensada,
pelo enorme potencial que lhe é reconhecido para aplicações em
nanoeletrónica, entre outros campos de estudo.
Graphene is a material made of only carbon atoms that is
considered a revolution in technological research as it is a good
conductor and only one-atom thick. The study of graphene is one
of the most attractive areas of Condensed Matter Physics due
to its enormous potential for applications in nano-electronics,
amongst other fields of study.

Konstantin Novoselov, da Universidade de Manchester, com quem
Nuno Peres, da Escola de Ciências da UMinho, colabora desde 2005.
The discovery of graphene granted the Nobel Prize in Physics

O grafeno é normalmente obtido pela esfoliação da grafite,
originando uma única camada deste material, a qual é muito fina
(da espessura de um átomo) e muito resistente, sendo muitas
vezes mais forte do que o aço. O grafeno possibilita múltiplas
aplicações e, por isso, é visto como potencial solução para
problemas na área da nanotecnologia, desde a substituição de

The Graphene Flagship consortium, which in Portugal is

work. It is an unprecedented consortium in European research of
graphene, which is coordinated by Jari Kinaret of the University of
Chalmers, Sweden. Combines 348 universities, 182 R&D centres,

To produce graphene on an industrial scale is central to the
consortium. Nevertheless, the European project particularly focuses
on information and communication technologies, physical transports
and energy applications and sensors, and may include more areas
under Horizon 2020. Amongst the innovations that are being
prepared are: optical interfaces, flexible, durable and fast digital
devices (as electronic paper or lighter and more efficient aeroplanes),
advanced batteries, tactile panels, sequencing of DNA bases, and,
later on, new computational paradigms and cutting-edge medical
applications, such as artificial retinas. Um físico português reconhecido mundialmente
Nuno Miguel Machado Reis Peres é professor catedrático do
Departamento de Física da Escola de Ciências da UMinho e
exerce a sua atividade de investigação integrado no grupo de
Complexidade e Propriedades Eletrónicas do Centro de Física da
mesma Universidade. A qualidade do trabalho de investigação de Nuno Peres teve um aumento de visibilidade quando foi anunciado
o Prémio Nobel da Física 2010. O reconhecimento ao seu trabalho
científico valeu-lhe o Prémio Gulkenkian de Ciência e o Prémio de
Mérito Científico da Universidade.
A Portuguese physicist recognised worldwide
Nuno Miguel Machado Reis Peres is a full professor of the
Department of Physics of the School of Sciences, University of
Minho, and his research activity is integrated in the group of
Complexity and Electronic Properties of this University’s Physics
Centre. The visibility of the quality of Nuno Peres’ research
work was enhanced when the Nobel Prize in Physics 2010 was
announced. The recognition for his scientific work granted him
the Gulbenkian Science Award and the University of Minho
Scientific Merit Award.

O ano 2014 foi verdadeiramente relevante para a história da
Universidade do Minho e da Associação Académica da UMinho
(AAUM). A Associação Europeia de Desporto Universitário (EUSA)
distinguiu a UMinho como a melhor universidade europeia
em desporto universitário. Para este feito internacional foram
decisivos os troféus conquistados no andebol, futsal, futebol e
voleibol de praia masculinos, no futsal e voleibol femininos, e no
taekwondo, equipas e individuais. A UMinho venceu também os
Jogos Galaico-Durienses, no âmbito dos quais competem as três
universidades da Galiza e as três do Norte de Portugal.
A motivação acentuou-se com o reconhecimento interno: a
UMinho recebeu do Município de Braga a distinção “Prémio
Excelência” na 1ª Gala do Desporto. Registaram-se os melhores
resultados de sempre nas competições organizadas pela
Federação Académica do Desporto Universitário: 112 medalhas,
das quais 33 de ouro, 36 de prata e 43 de bronze.

O ano ficou marcado pelos mais de 150 eventos desportivos,
nomeadamente o Campeonato Mundial Universitário de Andebol,
em que participaram 11 equipas masculinas e 11 femininas
de quatro continentes. Portugal sagrou-se Campeão Mundial
na vertente masculina. Da equipa vencedora faziam parte
nove estudantes/atletas da UMinho, alguns dos quais também
Campeões Europeus Universitários, nos EUSA Games.
Unindo forças
A UMinho/AAUM tem tido uma presença regular no topo no
ranking da EUSA, sendo terceira classificada em 2010 e segunda
em 2011 e 2012. Vinte anos após o lançamento dos serviços
desportivos, que mobilizam mais de 10.000 utentes em Braga e
Guimarães, e após a organização de nove eventos internacionais,
foi alcançada a mais alta posição do desporto competitivo
universitário na Europa. O seu posicionamento face ao desporto
deve-se à articulação com o projeto educativo, à parceria
estreita entre os Serviços de Ação Social e a AAUM e também à
colaboração com os clubes e associações desportivos da região.

At the top
of university sports
2014 was truly relevant to the history of the University of
Minho and the Students’ Union. The European University Sports
Association (EUSA) distinguished UMinho as the best European
university in university sports. The trophies won in men’s handball,
futsal, football and beach volleyball, in women’s futsal and
volleyball, and in taekwondo (teams and singles) were decisive
for this remarkable international achievement. UMinho also won
the Galician-Duriense Games, under which three universities from
Galicia and three from northern Portugal compete.
The motivation was further increased with local recognition:
UMinho received from the Town Council of Braga the distinctions
“Excellence Award” in the 1st Gala of Sports. UMinho achieved
the best results ever in competitions organised by the Academic
Federation of University Sports: 112 medals - 33 gold, 36 silver

“The results and titles I have received are a way to thank UMinho
for all the support it has given me and to all fellow student
athletes. Without this support, it would be impossible to get that
far academically and in sports. We have to be moderate: the time
left after classes, practices and competitions is not much; the only
solution is to take advantage of the free periods.
One of my goals is to participate in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,
although the World Championship and other important competitions
will also take place in 2015. So, my goal at this moment is to have
a good performance and continue to be in the top 8 of the world
ranking.”
The year was marked by more than 150 sporting events,
including the World University Championship of Handball, in
which participated 11 men’s teams and 11 women’s teams
from four continents. Portugal was crowned World Champion in
men’s team. The winning team was composed of nine UMinho
students/athletes, some of which were also European University
Champions in the EUSA Games.
Joining forces
UMinho/Students’ Union has had a regular presence at the top
in the ranking of EUSA, having been in third place in 2010, and in
second place in 2011 and 2012. Twenty years after the launching
of the sporting services that mobilise more than 10,000 users
in Braga and Guimarães, and following the organisation of nine
international events, UMinho has reached the highest position
in university competitive sports in Europe. UMinho’s position in
sports is due to the articulation with the educational project, to
the close partnership between the Social Action Services and the
Students’ Union, as well as to the cooperation with sport clubs
and associations of the region.

É por isso, e para isso, que está em construção a operação Alumni
UMinho, traduzida numa articulação regular e efetiva entre a
UMinho os seus ex-estudantes, incluindo iniciativas como: o portal
AlumniUMinho e a newsletter NÓS Alumni, bem como outras de
índole mais específica e diversificada, como o I Encontro Alumni,
realizado no passado dia 20 de setembro, que reuniu cerca de 600
pessoas no complexo do Largo do Paço.
Mais do que uma presença na história da Universidade do Minho,
importa ser parte do integrante do futuro da mesma, participando e
ajudando a construir a nossa Universidade.

Be a part of the future of our University
UMinho’s prestige is also the result of the quality of its graduates,
as shown by their professional and personal success.
It is the University’s plan to closely follow the professional progress
of its graduates, better understand the impact of their educational
offer, and ensure their adaptation to the dynamics of society and
the labour market, while promoting employability amongst its
students through enhanced interaction with employers.
In this context, by investing in a new impetus for the Alumni
UMinho project, UMinho will ensure a more effective tracking
of its graduates’ progress, in parallel with other objectives
consistent with the overall strategy of the University.
At a time when communication holds great importance, it is
crucial that the large community of former students of the
University of Minho - about 70,000 people - learn about the
performance and excellence of their University. They should know
about the quality of UMinho’s teaching projects, the recognition it
received for research activities and innovation, for its outstanding
artistic and sports performance, the extent of its solidarity and
greatness in creation and entrepreneurship, as well as the impact
of the interaction it promotes with the industry and services.
The dissemination of the professional and personal progress
of the members of this community is equally important, by
highlighting examples and promoting networking amongst its
members, in particular between those from different generations
and areas of knowledge. UMinho’s wealth goes far beyond the
boundaries of knowledge that it builds and disseminates, by
projecting itself forward into its graduates’ progress and into
their many extraordinary accomplishments.
This is the reason why the Alumni UMinho project exists: to expose
and share these successes, to create opportunities, to connect
the will of involvement between parties, based on voluntary
service and on the combination of experiences and specialised
knowledge, as well as to encourage cooperation in larger projects,
especially those that structure the University’s strategy.
It is for all this that the operation Alumni UMinho is being created.
It translates into a regular and effective coordination between
UMinho and its former students, including initiatives such as: the
portal AlumniUMinho and the newsletter NÓS Alumni, as well as
more specific and diverse initiatives as the First Alumni Reunion
(held on 20 September), gathering about 600 people in the
Complex of Largo do Paço.
More than just a presence in the history of the University of
Minho, it is important to be an integral part of its future by
participating and helping in the University’s construction.

Para a UMinho, as Casas do Conhecimento (CdC) são “uma outra
dimensão da Universidade” que permite, acima de tudo, reforçar
a sua condição de agente regional ativo, mas também alargar
o reconhecimento e a procura da sua oferta formativa. As CdC
representam, assim, os canais pelos quais a UMinho e os demais
membros da rede procuram sensibilizar e envolver os cidadãos
em desafios como a inovação, a aprendizagem, a criatividade,
a experimentação tecnológica e a participação, mobilizando as
suas comunidades locais, regionais e académicas, como atores
do desenvolvimento económico e social, comprometendo-os na
criação, utilização e disseminação do conhecimento.
The Houses of Knowledge for UMinho are “another aspect of the
University” which, above all, allows it to strengthen its position
as active regional agent, but also extend the recognition and
demand for its educational offer. Thus, the Houses of Knowledge
represent the channels through which UMinho and other
members of the network encourage and engage citizens in
significant challenges, such as innovation, learning, creativity,
technological experimentation and participation. These spaces
mobilise its local, regional and academic communities as actors
in the economic and social development, by involving them in the
creation, use and dissemination of knowledge.
A longa e boa cooperação entre a Universidade do Minho e a
Universidade Nacional de Timor Lorosa’e permitiram também a
constituição de um polo da CdC da UMinho em Díli, uma outra
instância destes espaços de convergência de pessoas e de
conhecimento, um ponto de ligação aos outros membros da rede e às
suas comunidades, constituindo-se como uma demonstração desta
“nova dimensão da UMinho”, como uma Universidade sem muros.
The long and good cooperation between UMinho and the National
University of East Timor also allowed the creation of a centre
in Dili of UMinho’s Houses of Knowledge, another instance of
these spaces of convergence of people and knowledge. This new
centre is a connection point to other members of the network and
their communities, stressing this “new aspect of UMinho” as a
University without walls.
A Rede Casas do Conhecimento (RCdC) nasce da vontade da
Universidade do Minho em cooperar e interagir com a sociedade
e, deste modo, contribuir para o desenvolvimento da região em
que se insere. Inicialmente constituída, em 2012, pela UMinho, os
Municípios de Vila Verde, Fafe, Paredes de Coura, Vieira do Minho
e o Centro de Computação Gráfica, a rede conta, hoje, com mais
quatro parceiros, Boticas, desde julho de 2013, Trofa, Ponte da

The Network of Houses of Knowledge (RCdC) is the result of the
will of the University of Minho to cooperate and interact with
society, and thus contribute to the development of the region
in which it operates. Initially formed in 2012 by UMinho, the
municipalities of Vila Verde, Fafe, Paredes de Coura, Vieira do
Minho and the Centre for Computer Graphics, the network today
also includes four extra partners: Boticas, since July 2013, Trofa,
Ponte da Barca and Montalegre, since November 2014.

A concretização da Casa do Conhecimento tratou-se de, numa
abordagem inovadora, dar uma dimensão física, (…) a um conceito
inscrito na estratégia municipal que visava promover a inclusão
das populações na Sociedade da Informação, a igualdade de
acesso e eficiente utilização das tecnologias digitais, contribuindo
para o incremento das competências e qualificações das pessoas
e para o desenvolvimento social, cultural e económico da região.

The House of Knowledge was about providing, through an innovative
approach, a physical dimension (...) to a concept integrated in
the municipal strategy. A strategy that is aimed at promoting
the inclusion of people in the Information Society, and providing
equal access as well as efficient use of digital technologies, thus
contributing to the improvement of people’s skills and qualifications,
and the social, cultural and economic development of the region.
Over the past years, the municipality of Vila Verde has put this
strategic vision into action by promoting a schedule of activities
in various contexts, under the aegis of educational, creative and
inclusive technologies.

The opening of the House of Knowledge of UMinho in Dili, in
partnership with the National University of East Timor (UNTL), is a
good example of the way our university opens to the world. This is
represented not only in its outstanding activity in the region in which

partners, wherever they may be. Promoting the dissemination of

The link between urban regeneration, higher education,
research and creativity
Apesar da progressiva industrialização nos primeiros anos do
século XX, a passagem da produção artesanal para a mecanização
e produção industrial em Couros foi muito tardia, o que, em
conjugação com questões de saúde pública, provocou o declínio
dessa indústria a partir da década de cinquenta. Alguns dos
edifícios foram ainda utilizados por indústrias têxteis até ao final
do século XX.
Despite the progressive industrialisation in the early 20th century,
the passage from handmade production to mechanised and
industrial production in the Couros Area was very late, which, in
conjunction with public health issues, caused the decline of this
industry from the 50s onwards. Nevertheless, some of the buildings
were still used by textile industries until the end of the 20th century.
Couros é a zona a sul do centro histórico de Guimarães cujo
nome está associado à atividade dos curtumes, tendo sido, desde
a Idade Média, determinante para a economia da cidade. No
final do século XIX, Guimarães era o centro de curtimenta mais
importante do norte do país e a zona de Couros concentrava as
principais unidades industriais e produtivas.
Couros is the area south of the historic centre of Guimarães, whose
name is associated with the tanning activity (Couros meaning leather
in Portuguese), and which was crucial to the city’s economy since
the Middle Ages. In the late 19th century, Guimarães was the most
important tanning centre of northern Portugal, concentrating the
main industrial and production units in the Couros Area.
Fruto da antiguidade e tipologia de alguns edifícios, bem como da
fraca qualidade construtiva de outros, os espaços degradaram-se
progressivamente. Em 1996, a Câmara de Guimarães iniciou a
reabilitação deste núcleo industrial e em 2001 nasceu o Complexo
Multifuncional de Couros. Permanecia, contudo, um grande
número de edifícios ligados a esta indústria, cujo valor histórico
mereceu a classificação de interesse público nos anos setenta,
que era urgente recuperar. Foi nesse contexto, e com o objetivo
de reforçar a integração da UMinho na cidade, que o Município e
a Universidade desenvolveram o projeto Campurbis (2006 - 2012),
no âmbito do qual foi concretizada uma plataforma capaz de
induzir atividade económica baseada numa interação sustentável
entre inovação, tecnologia e artes, ancorada num intenso esforço
de formação de recursos humanos.
The spaces progressively degraded as a result of time, the
typology of some buildings, as well as the poor construction
quality of others. In 1996 the Town Council of Guimarães initiated
the rehabilitation of this industrial centre, and in 2001 the
Multifunctional Complex of Couros was born. However, a large
number of buildings connected to this industry still remained
and urgently needed rehabilitation, and whose historical value
actually earned the classification of property of public interest in
the 70s. Within this context, and in order to strengthen UMinho’s
integration in the city, the Town Council of Guimarães and the
University developed the Campurbis project (2006 - 2012). As
a result, a platform was created in order to induce economic
activity based on a sustainable interaction between innovation,
technology and arts, and anchored in an intense effort aimed at
training human resources.
A intervenção e reabilitação do património imobiliário das antigas
fábricas permitiram a criação de um novo espaço universitário – o
campus de Couros - que, dada a sua localização em plena malha
urbana, acentua os conceitos de campus virtual e de universidade
sem muros, vinculados à missão e estratégia da UMinho.
Este campus tem já em funcionamento o Centro Avançado de
Formação Pós-graduada – para acolher estudantes de mestrado
e doutoramento e, também, a Licenciatura em Teatro; a Unidade
Operacional da UNU em e-gov e o Instituto de Design – que acolhe
a licenciatura em Design do Produto e onde, progressivamente,
funcionarão outros cursos de especialização neste domínio. O
Centro de Ciência Viva de Guimarães – no qual se prevê uma
exposição permanente, subordinada ao tema “como são feitas as
coisas” está em fase de conclusão e a recuperação do complexo do
antigo Teatro Jordão e Garagem Avenida permitirá alojar projetos
universitários no domínio das artes performativas e visuais.
The intervention and rehabilitation of the built heritage of the
former factories led to the creation of a new university space - the
Couros campus - which, given its location on the urban fabric,
emphasises the concepts of ‘virtual campus’ and ‘university
without walls’, which are ingrained in UMinho’s mission and
strategy. This campus already has in operation: the Centre
for Advanced Post-graduate Training to welcome students of
master’s and doctoral degrees as well as a degree in Theater; the
Operating unit of UNU on e-gov and the Institute of Design, which
hosts a degree in Product Design and where other specialised
courses in this area will progressively operate; the Living Science
Centre of Guimarães, which will have a permanent exhibition on
the theme “how things are done” that is nearing completion; and,
finally, the recovery of the former Jordão Theatre and the building
Garagem Avenida, which will host university projects in the field
of performing and visual arts.
A grande intervenção efetuada nos espaços públicos, no âmbito
da iniciativa Guimarães Capital Europeia da Cultura 2012, e a
atmosfera muito particular de todo o espaço potenciam a sua
crescente afirmação como um campus da criatividade, aberto à
interação entre a UMinho e a sociedade.

very special atmosphere of the whole area enhance its growing

JANUARY
Conselho Cultural com nova presidência
Eduarda Keating, do Instituto de Letras e Ciências Humanas,
assumiu a presidência do Conselho Cultural a 17 de janeiro. Em
junho tomou posse o plenário. O órgão de consulta do reitor e do
Conselho Geral junta os responsáveis das unidades culturais, um
aluno e dez figuras da cultura.
Cultural Council with new presidency
Eduarda Keating, of the Institute of Arts and Human Sciences,
took over the presidency of the Cultural Council on 17 January.
The new Cultural Council took office in June. As an advisory body
for the rector and General Council this unit gathers the heads of
the cultural units, a student and ten cultural personalities.
Campanhas de sensibilização e solidariedade social
A campanha “Menos olhos do que barriga”, criada por alunos
de Ciências da Comunicação, foi lançada pelos Serviços de
Ação Social à comunidade académica, visando a luta contra
o desperdício alimentar. Em março, outra iniciativa dos SAS,
AAUM e AAEUM permitiu a entrega de 1700 peças de roupa a
instituições de Braga, Famalicão, Vieira do Minho e Guimarães.
Awareness-raising and social solidarity campaigns
The campaign “Bite off less than one could chew” (“Menos olhos
que barriga”), created by students of the degree in Communication
Sciences, was launched by the Social Action Services (SAS) to the
academic community in order to fight against food waste. In March,
another initiative from SAS, the Students’ Union and the Alumni
Association allowed the delivery of 1700 garments to institutions of
Braga, Famalicão, Vieira do Minho and Guimarães.
Cursos breves de introdução ao Braille
As formações, da iniciativa do Gabinete para a Inclusão,
decorreram no campus de Gualtar, em janeiro, e no campus de
Azurém, em novembro, e destinaram-se a todos os interessados
em aprender o sistema de leitura e escrita inventado por Louis
Braille para os cegos.
Short courses of introduction to Braille
The courses - an initiative of the Office for Inclusion - were held
in the Gualtar campus in January, and in the Azurém campus
in November. These courses were directed to all interested in
learning the reading and writing system invented by Louis Braille
for the blind.

Fórum UMinho
A estrutura de diálogo entre o reitor e a comunidade académica
conheceu as preocupações dos vários corpos da UMinho. A 19
de fevereiro decorreu a sessão com professores e investigadores
doutorados e a 26 decorreu a sessão com trabalhadores não
docentes e não investigadores. A 3ª sessão do fórum decorreu em
dezembro e foi dedicada ao Consórcio UNorte.pt.
Forum UMinho
Forum UMinho, a place for dialogue between the rector and
the academic community, gathered the concerns of the
various bodies of UMinho. The meeting with teachers and Ph.D.
researchers was held on 19 February and the session with nonacademic staff took place on the 26th. The 3rd Forum session
(held in December) was dedicated to the Consortium UNorte.pt.
40º Aniversário da Universidade do Minho
A sessão solene contou com a presença de Diogo Freitas do
Amaral, membro da Comissão Instaladora, Emídio Gomes,
presidente da CCDRN, António M. Cunha, reitor, e Carlos Videira,
presidente da Associação Académica. Seguiu-se a inauguração
da Exposição Itinerante dos 40 anos da Instituição. Nos dias 15,
16 e 17 realizaram-se os concertos comemorativos em Viana do
Castelo, Braga e Guimarães.
UMinho’s 40th Anniversary
The formal ceremony was attended by Diogo Freitas do Amaral,
member of the Steering Committee, Emídio Gomes, president
of CCDRN, António M. Cunha, the rector, and Carlos Videira,
president of the Students’ Union. The ceremony was followed by
the inauguration of an itinerary exhibition on the 40 years of the
institution. On 15, 16 and 17 February, commemorative concerts
took place in Viana do Castelo, Braga and Guimarães.
UMinho em rede internacional de estudos clássicos
A UMinho integra a rede de investigação “Europa Renascens:
textos greco-latinos para a construção da Europa”. O projeto
aproxima os departamentos de Estudos Clássicos, Latim e Grego
das 11 universidades fundadoras da rede e visa divulgar estudos
e textos clássicos em tradução e afirmar internacionalmente as
academias envolvidas.
UMinho within international network of classical studies
UMinho is part of the research network “Europe Renascens: Greek
and Latin texts for the construction of Europe”. The project brings the
departments of Classical Studies, Latin and Greek of the 11 founding
universities of the network closer, and aims at disseminating
classical studies and texts undergoing translation, thus affirming and
consolidating all the involved universities at an international basis.

Semanas dedicadas às ciências da saúde
A Semana Internacional do Cérebro decorreu em março; a
Semana da Epidemia de Ciência foi em abril e o ABC da Cirurgia
em outubro. As iniciativas são do Instituto de Investigação
em Ciências da Vida e da Saúde que abre as portas a centenas
de jovens dos ensinos básico e secundário, integrando-os em
atividades laboratoriais e de investigação científica.
Weeks dedicated to health sciences
The International Brain Awareness Week was held in March, the
Science Epidemic Week in April, and the ABCs in Surgical Sciences
in October. These initiatives come from the Life and Health
Sciences Research Institute that opens its doors to hundreds
of young people from elementary and secondary education,
integrating them in laboratory activities and scientific research.
Inventário nacional do património geológico on-line
O inventário reúne os 300 geossítios mais importantes de
Portugal, que permitem compreender a história e a evolução
geológicas do nosso território. Este inventário resulta de um
projeto de investigação coordenado pelo Centro de Ciências da
Terra, financiado pela FCT, no qual participaram 70 geocientistas.
On-line national inventory of geological heritage
The inventory gathers the 300 most important geosites of
Portugal, which allow us to understand the history and geological
evolution of our territory. This inventory is the result of a research
project coordinated by the Earth Sciences Centre and funded by
FCT, and counted on the participation of 70 geoscientists.

The School of Nursing (ESE) organised the First International
Congress: the person in critical condition, with the collaboration

The Organising Committee of the programme of the 40th
anniversary of 25 April brought to the Institute of Education a
round of discussions on “40 years of April - Education, Democracy

O acordo para a instalação da unidade operacional para o ensino e
investigação em governação eletrónica – UNU-EGOV foi oficializado
a 23 de maio em Lisboa, tendo iniciado atividade em julho,
no campus de Couros. Em outubro decorreu a 8ª Conferência
Internacional de Teoria e Prática de Governação Eletrónica.
United Nations University in Guimarães
The agreement for the creation of an operating unit on policydriven electronic governance (UNU-EGOV) was formalised on 23
May in Lisbon. The operating unit started its activity in July, in the
Couros campus. The 8th International Conference on Theory and
Practice of Electronic Governance took place in October.

A 4ª edição da Festa da Ciência promoveu um programa de
atividades de divulgação da Ciência com workshops, sessões
hands-on, construções 3D, concursos, palestras e exposições
dirigidas aos alunos dos ensinos pré-escolar, básico e secundário.
Participaram 1300 alunos ao longo de 3 dias.

The 4th edition of the Science Party organised several activities
for the promotion of science, namely workshops, hands-on
sessions, 3D constructions, contests, lectures and exhibitions,
aimed at pre-school, middle and high school students. 1300
students participated in the 3-day event.

O protocolo formaliza um programa de bolsas de mérito e oferta
de estágios. A cerimónia incluiu também uma conferência sobre o
futuro das cidades. Marcaram presença o secretário de Estado do
Ordenamento do Território e da Conservação da Natureza, Miguel
de Castro Neto, o economista Augusto Mateus e o arquiteto
Manuel Graça Dias. Os prémios de mérito foram entregues numa
cerimónia que aconteceu a 5 de dezembro.
Protocol with eight national construction businesses
The protocol formalises a merit scholarship programme and a
traineeship offer. The ceremony also included a conference on
the future of cities. The ceremony counted on the presence of the
Secretary of State for Spatial Planning and Nature Conservation,
Miguel de Castro Neto, the economist Augusto Mateus and the
architect Manuel Graça Dias. The merit awards were presented at
a ceremony that took place on 5 December.
Prémios e Bolsas de Excelência
A UMinho distinguiu, com uma bolsa de valor idêntico ao da
propina anual, 110 alunos. Foram elegíveis os estudantes que
ingressaram na UMinho em 2013/2014 com nota igual ou superior
a 16 valores, na primeira fase do concurso nacional de acesso e
em 1ª opção e os que concluíram os 1º e 2º anos do curso.
Excellence Scholarships and Prizes
UMinho distinguished 110 students with a grant of equivalent amount
to the annual tuition fee. These scholarships/prizes are given to
students who enrolled in UMinho in 2013/2014 with a grade of 16 or
higher in the first phase of the national competition for access to higher
education, where the degree in question was their 1st option, and also
to students who completed the 1st and 2nd years of their degree.

A UMinho entregou o diploma de conclusão de estudos aos
primeiros 20 alunos que ingressaram ao abrigo do PLI. Este
programa permite que estudantes de cursos de formação de
professores no Brasil prossigam os mesmos numa universidade
portuguesa e regressem à universidade de origem para o término
da formação.

A sétima edição do programa aconteceu em Braga e Guimarães

Summer on Campus
The 7th edition of the programme took place in Braga and Guimarães
and opened UMinho’s doors to 300 high school students. The
programme presented a set of 20 non-formal teaching activities in
the fields of architecture, science, social sciences, health sciences,
law, education, engineering, literature and arts.
Nobel da Paz no II Congresso Mundial de História do Ambiente
Mohan Munasinghe, antigo vice-presidente do Painel
Intergovernamental para as Alterações Climáticas da ONU, que
em 2007 partilhou o Nobel da Paz com Al Gore, veio à UMinho
abrir o II Congresso Mundial de História do Ambiente, falando
para mais de 550 participantes. A antecipar a sua participação no
congresso, reuniu-se com o reitor António M. Cunha.
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate at the 2nd World Congress of
Environmental History
Mohan Munasinghe, former vice-chairman of the United Nations
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and who in 2007
shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore, came to UMinho open
the World Congress of Environmental History and spoke to over
550 participants. Anticipating his participation in the Congress,
he also met with the rector António M. Cunha.
XX Congresso da Associação Europeia de Estudos Chineses
O XX Congresso EACS, promovido pelo Instituto Confúcio da
UMinho e pela Universidade de Coimbra, decorreu nas duas
instituições, entre os dias 23 e 26 de julho, e contou com a
participação de 250 especialistas. Sendo o primeiro realizado
em Portugal, coroou o desenvolvimento e aprofundamento dos
Estudos Chineses na UMinho.
20th Congress of the European Association of Chinese Studies
The 20th Congress of EACS, promoted by the Confucius Institute
of UMinho and the University of Coimbra, took place in the
two institutions between 23 and 26 July, and counted on the
participation of 250 experts. As the first congress was held in
Portugal, this congress edition crowned the development and
deepening of Chinese Studies at UMinho.
UMinho bestowed the diploma for successful completion
of studies on the first 20 students who enrolled under the
International Undergraduate Programme. This programme allows
students from teacher training courses in Brazil to continue
the course in a Portuguese university and return to their home
university in order to finish their training.

A APCER certificou a Gestão da Qualidade e a Investigação,
Desenvolvimento e Inovação da TecMinho, tornando-a na primeira
interface das universidades nacionais a conseguir a certificação
na segunda e uma das primeiras sem forma jurídica de empresa
a ser certificada em IDI. Na continuidade da sua missão, lançou a
Clínica de Negócios em Braga e Guimarães.
Dual certification for TecMinho
APCER certified the Quality Management, and Research,
Development and Innovation of TecMinho, making it the first
interface of national universities to achieve certification in the
latter and one of the first without being a legal form of a business
organisation to be certified in RDI. By furthering its mission,
TecMinho launched the Business Clinic in Braga and Guimarães.
Escola de Computação CERN
A iniciativa foi da Organização Europeia para a Pesquisa
Nuclear, em colaboração com a UMinho e o LIP Minho Laboratório de Física das Partículas. Recebeu 61 participantes
de laboratórios e universidades de todo o mundo. O evento
iniciou com a abertura da exposição fotográfica “60 anos do
CERN”.
CERN School of Computing
The initiative came from the European Organisation for
Nuclear Research, in collaboration with UMinho and LIP Minho Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics.
It received 61 participating laboratories and universities from
around the world. The event started with the opening of the photo
exhibition “60 years of CERN.”
Alunos que acolhem alunos
O programa Buddy UMinho, promovido pelos Serviços de
Relações Internacionais, deu oportunidade a alunos da UMinho
de “apadrinhar” estudantes Erasmus, ajudando-os durante a sua
estada em Portugal. O projeto “Tutorias por pares”, da Escola
de Psicologia e da AAUM, permitiu beneficiar os novos alunos
nacionais no processo de adaptação e integração na universidade.
Students welcome students
The Buddy UMinho programme, promoted by the International
Relations Office, gave UMinho students the opportunity to
“patronise” Erasmus students, helping them during their stay in
Portugal. The “Peer Tutoring” project of the School of Psychology
and the Students’ Union benefited new students in their process
of adaptation and integration to the University.
Conferência Mundial sobre Formação de Professores
A 39ª Conferência da Associação para a Formação de Professores
na Europa – ATEE, promovida pelo Instituto de Educação, contou
com mais de 300 participantes de 50 países de todo o mundo.
Reuniram-se para debater as transições na formação e nas
carreiras dos professores, bem como as suas implicações na
identidade profissional docente.
World Conference on Teacher Education
Over 300 participants from 50 countries attended the 39th
Conference of the Association for Teacher Education in Europe
(ATEE), promoted by the Institute of Education. Participants met
to discuss the transitions in teacher education and careers, as
well as the implications in teacher professional identity.
BioCamp 2014
Ana Catarina Lima, aluna do doutoramento em Sistemas de
Bioengenharia, esteve entre os 60 jovens mais talentosos de
todo o mundo que participaram na edição de 2014 do reputado
seminário sobre a indústria farmacêutica.

Ana Catarina Lima, doctoral student in Bioengineering Systems,
was amongst the 60 most talented young people around the world
who will participate in the 2014 edition of the renowned seminar
on the pharmaceutical industry.

Cerimónia de acolhimento ao Estudante Internacional
Os 56 alunos ao abrigo do novo regime são maioritariamente
oriundos de Angola e do Brasil e frequentam cursos de
Arquitetura, Ciências, Direito, Economia e Gestão e Engenharia.
Entretanto, a sessão de boas-vindas aos mais de 2000 alunos que
entraram pelo regime normal foi no dia 15, no campus de Gualtar.
Foreign Student Welcome Session
Under the new regime, the 56 students are mostly from Angola and
Brazil. They are attending degrees in Architecture, Science, Law,
Economics and Management, and Engineering. In addition, the
welcoming session for over 2000 students who enrolled through
the normal regime was on the 15th, in the Gualtar campus.

No contexto da crescente internacionalização da oferta
graduada e pós-graduada da UMinho, Carla Martins, professora
auxiliar da Escola de Psicologia, foi nomeada pró-reitora para a

In the context of the increasing internationalisation of
undergraduate and graduate offer of UMinho, Carla Martins,
Assistant Professor of the School Psychology, was appointed prorector for the Internationalisation of Education.
Estudo para a requalificação urbanística de Fafe
A Escola de Arquitetura envolveu docentes e alunos no estudo
preliminar para a requalificação urbanística do concelho de
Fafe. Coordenado por Vincenzo Riso, o trabalho culmina numa
exposição de mapas das estruturas e sistemas urbanos e
ensaios projetuais.
Congresso nacional sobre direitos da criança
Sob o tema “Realidades e Desafios no 25º Aniversário da
Convenção sobre os Direitos da Criança: o caso português”, o
Instituto de Educação e a Escola de Direito trouxeram à discussão
as políticas públicas para a infância e as realidades sociais e
culturais em que vivem.
Study for the urban rehabilitation of Fafe
The School of Architecture gathered professors and students
in the preliminary study for the urban rehabilitation of the
municipality of Fafe. Coordinated by Vincenzo Riso, the work
culminates in an exhibition of maps of the structures and urban
systems, and preliminary projects.
National conference on children’s rights
Under the theme “Realities and Challenges on the 25th
Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child: the
Portuguese case”, the Institute of Education and School of Law
brought up for discussion public policies for children and social
and cultural realities in which they live.

IV Encontro Nacional de Provedores do Estudante
O encontro, em que interveio o presidente do Conselho Nacional
da Educação, David Justino com a tertúlia “Desafios da Educação
Superior no Século XXI”, teve como objetivo a observação plural
da realidade, do contexto do mundo estudantil e do impacto e
expetativa da vivência académica na comunidade social e global.
4th National Meeting of Student Ombudsmen
The meeting’s goal was the plural observation of reality, the
student world, and the impact and expectation of academic life
in the social and global community. The president of the National
Council of Education, David Justino, also intervened with the
debate on “Challenges of Higher Education in the 21st Century”.

A iniciativa da AAUM decorreu nos campi de Gualtar e Azurém,
nos dias 14 e 15 de outubro. Proporcionou o contacto direto
entre a comunidade e o mercado de trabalho, a divulgação
de oportunidades, o desenvolvimento de competências e o
networking dos participantes.

The initiative of the Students’ Union was held on the campuses
of Gualtar and Azurém, on 14 and 15 October. It provided direct
contact between the community and the labour market, by
providing the dissemination of opportunities, skills development
and networking of participants.

A distinção foi atribuída ao atelier de arquitetura Lacaton &
Vassal, Paris, por altura das comemorações do 18º aniversário
da Escola de Arquitetura. A Aula Aberta, na qual também se
relembrou e homenageou a figura do patrono, teve o título

The distinction was awarded to the atelier Lacaton & Vassal, Paris,
on the occasion of the celebrations of the 18th anniversary of
the School of Architecture. The Open Class, in which the patron
was also remembered and honoured, was dedicated to the theme
“Metamorphoses”.
Lions Clube de Braga atribui 50 bolsas
Pelo segundo ano consecutivo, o Lions Clube de Braga ofereceu 50
bolsas de estudo a estudantes carenciados da UMinho, num valor
global que ultrapassa os 50 mil euros. A angariação aconteceu
num jantar de gala “Lions Mission”, sensibilizando a sociedade
para esta causa.
Lions Club of Braga awards 50 scholarships
For the second consecutive year, the Lions Club of Braga offered
50 scholarships to the most needy students of UMinho; a total
value that exceeds 50 thousand Euros. The fundraising event
took place at a gala dinner, “Lions Mission”, raising awareness in
society for this cause.
Rádio Universitária do Minho em Guimarães
A inauguração do novo estúdio no Instituto de Design contou com
o secretário de Estado do Desporto e Juventude, Emídio Guerreiro,
o reitor, António M. Cunha, o presidente da CMGuimarães,
Domingos Bragança, e o presidente da AAUM, Carlos Videira.
Houve emissão especial da RUM durante todo o dia, a partir da
Praça de Santiago.
University of Minho Radio in Guimarães
The inauguration of the new studio at the Institute of Design
counted on the presence of the Secretary of State for Sports
and Youth, Emídio Guerreiro, the rector, António M. Cunha, the
president of the Town Council of Guimarães, Domingos Bragança,
and the president of the Students’ Union, Carlos Videira. RUM
broadcast a special programme throughout the day, from Praça
de Santiago.

Prémios Município do Ano - Portugal 2014
Os prémios constituem uma das quatro vertentes da Academia
para os Municípios, criada pela plataforma UMCidades, da
UMinho. Das 98 candidaturas submetidas de 65 municípios, o
júri nomeou 28 municípios para as 9 categorias a concurso. A
cerimónia incluiu uma homenagem ao saudoso professor Manuel
Costa Lobo, um dos mais importantes urbanistas nacionais.
Municipality of the Year Awards - Portugal 2014
The awards are just one of the four projects of the Academia
directed towards the municipalities, created by UMinho’s
UMCidades platform. Of the 98 applications submitted by 65
municipalities, the jury named 28 municipalities for the nine
categories of the contest. The ceremony included a tribute to
the late Professor Manuel Costa Lobo, one of the most important
national urban planners.

O Conselho Cultural, o Departamento de Filosofia e a Biblioteca
Lúcio Craveiro da Silva assinalaram o centenário do nascimento
do professor Lúcio Craveiro da Silva, fundador da UMinho, antigo
reitor, figura ímpar da Universidade e cultura portuguesas e
patrono da Biblioteca bracarense que ostenta o seu nome.

The Cultural Council, the Philosophy Department and Lúcio
Craveiro da Silva Library marked the 100th anniversary of
Professor Lúcio Craveiro da Silva’s birth, founder of UMinho,
former rector, unique figure of the University and Portuguese
culture, and patron of Braga’s Public library that bears his name.

O reitor António M. Cunha foi eleito presidente do Conselho de
Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas, sucedendo a António
Rendas, da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. A entrada em funções
decorreu a 11 de novembro.

The rector António M. Cunha was elected President of the Council
of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP), succeeding António
Rendas from the New University (NOVA) of Lisbon. Inauguration of
the new president took place on 11 November.
Novos membros na Rede Casas do Conhecimento
Os municípios de Montalegre, Ponte da Barca e Trofa aderiram,
a 24 de novembro, à Rede Casas do Conhecimento da UMinho. O
projeto tem como meta a aproximação das populações dos oito
municípios aderentes às novas tecnologias, proporcionando-lhes
ações de coesão digital, infoinclusão e literacia digital.
New members in Network of Houses of Knowledge
The municipalities of Montalegre, Ponte da Barca and Trofa
joined on 24 November the Network of Houses of Knowledge of
UMinho. The project aims at bringing the population of the eight
municipalities closer to the new technologies, by promoting
amongst them digital cohesion, e-inclusion and digital literacy.

I Encontro Anual de Spin-offs
O objetivo foi a partilha de experiências e oportunidades e a
divulgação das competências e ambições das empresas. Participou
também Daniel Bessa, diretor-geral da COTEC, que falou sobre
os desafios e oportunidades do empreendedorismo atual, e José
Mendes, vice-reitor da UMinho, referiu a importância das spin-offs
no ecossistema de inovação e empreendedorismo da UMinho.
First Annual Meeting of Spin-offs
The objective was to share experiences and opportunities, and
promote the dissemination of skills and ambitions of businesses.
Daniel Bessa, general director of COTEC, also participated
by stressing the challenges and opportunities of the current
entrepreneurship, as well as José Mendes, vice-rector of UMinho,
by discussing the importance of spin-offs in the innovation and
entrepreneurship ecosystem of UMinho.

O Relatório inclui uma análise integrada dos impactos da
atividade em termos económicos, sociais e ambientais. Aborda as
principais atividades inerentes à missão da academia na geração,

Presentation of the Sustainability Report
The report includes an integrated analysis of the impacts of the
activity in economic, social and environmental terms. It also
addresses the main activities related to the university’s mission in
the generation, dissemination and application of knowledge and
its local, regional and national impact.

do Município de Braga
Já detentora da medalha de Grau Ouro, a UMinho recebeu a
medalha de Honra, atestando o seu enorme contributo no
desenvolvimento local e na promoção da marca “Braga”. O
Município atribuiu ainda medalhas de Grau Ouro a diversas
personalidades ligadas à UMinho.

After having received a Gold Medal, UMinho was now
distinguished with a Medal of Honour, attesting to its huge
contribution to local development and promotion of the brand
“Braga”. The Town Council also awarded Gold Medals to several

geradas pelas tecnologias.
eSkills National Conference
The conference was held under the aegis of the Grand Coalition
for Digital Jobs of the European Commission, and the Directorate
General for Education was the promoter in Portugal. It involved
more than 650 businesses, associations, educational and training
institutions and NGOs. The objective was to raise awareness
towards the importance of digital skills in the workplace and
promote job opportunities generated by technologies.
