Cast List January 2012 One-Act Plays Our long-awaited evening of oneact plays in collaboration with The BGT will take place at the Tramsschapp (Limpertsberg) from Wednesday the 8th through Saturday the 11th of February at 20:00. This idea came about well over a year ago, after a readthrough of the very first draft of Class Act, crafted by local writer Celeste Schuh-Koehler*. Tony Kingston of BGT suggested that it might be a great piece to perform in conjunction with NWTC, who would provide the other half of the evening’s entertainment. As keen as we were to make this happen, there was always some element of the collaboration missing - e.g, an NWTC director and play(s), a suitable venue, or some performance dates that were suitable for all involved. Fortunately, Timothy Lone came along with three plays from the David Ives collection All in the Timing, and Tony Kingston's persistence paid off in arranging for the venue on dates suitable for all. All elements are now in place, and we’re very pleased to be making our debut at the Class Act Barbara Hall Lena Hoss June Lowery Elke Murdock Clea du Toit Jessica Whiteley Robin Edds Bjørn Clasen Antonio Reis Trammschapp, a multi-purpose facility that will be transformed to suit our needs for a four-evening run of drama and comedy. Mark your calendars and come along for a great evening of entertainment: Tramsschapp, 49a rue Ermesinde, L-1469 LUXEMBOURG. *Interesting to note: Celeste’s 10-Minute play Goodbye Avis, which premiered at our own 10Minute Play Festival in May 2010, was performed in October 2011 as part of the Estrogenious Theater Festival at Manhattan TheatreSource in New York City. Tim has chosen three plays Timothy Lone from the David Ives collection “All in the Timing” to bring to the stage. “I am particularly interested in relationships and the status interplay between characters. When characters are fighting for their status in a play, it’s never boring!” A native of Chicago, Illinois, Tim was studying for a degree in chemistry when a friend persuaded him to join a university improvisation group. He went on to take his first acting class, and--though completing his Master’s degree in food chemistry—Tim decided to continue to study acting. His theatre training has taken him from Chicago to San Francisco to Paris and London. There were three strong influences in this journey. “I was fortunate to study with Keith Johnstone, well known as one of the founders of contemporary improv.” The popular television show “Whose Line is It Anyway?” came from Johnstone’s “Theatresports”, exploring techniques to free the spontaneous imagination of actors. Tim has also worked with Richard Seyd, of the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and Philippe Gaulier, founder of École Philippe Gaulier in Paris. “Gaulier trained under and taught with the great Jacques Lecoq, famous for his teaching method of physical theatre, especially movement and mime.” During this time, Tim was co-founder and Artistic Director of an international improv group based in Paris—“Improfessionals” – and taught performance at the University of Warwick and workshops for various theatre companies and schools in London, Paris and Luxembourg. In Luxembourg, Tim is looking forward to next month’s production of the Ives’ plays. “They explore not only the artistry of language and how it is put together , but also how we communicate substantial meaning even when the language is not fully understood.” For a multi-cultural audience (where English is often the second or third language) Tim hopes the plays will hit home. NWTC’s “All in the Timing” will be presented along with BGT’s “Class Act”, an original comedy-drama by local playwright Celeste Koehler. Pirates to Perform Aladdin Pirates Productions' next show is a traditional English pantomime based on the story of Aladdin. Directed by Pirates stalwart Steve Preston, it will take place over 8 performances in the last two weeks of January 2012. Comprising a cast of 30, over half of whom are not native English speakers, it features some familiar faces as you've never seen them before, as well as showcasing much new talent. A riot of colour, well-known songs and the usual pantomime silliness make this a date to put in the diary - an ideal outing for the whole family! Aladdin will be playing at the Chateau de Bettembourg from Thursday 19th to Sunday 22nd January 2012 and again from Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th January 2012 (Thursday and Friday performances start at 20:00, Saturday and Sunday matinees start at 15:00). Tickets are available through the Pirates web site: www.pirates.lu, by email to [email protected] or by calling our box office on 621 784 762. Creche facilities will be available. 2 New World Theatre Club Complicite Workshop December 14th 2011 by Deborah Anderson As a prelude to the internationally acclaimed theatre company Complicite’s performance of “The Master and Margarita” directed by Simon McBurney--the company offered a 3-hour workshop, lead by Associate Director Catherine Alexander. The goal was to give a teaching insight into how the company develops its work. Five of our NWTC members—Ann Overstall, Jackie Milne, Daniel Kelly, Steve Anderson and myself—were there, along with other enthusiastic (and curious) participants. Catherine led us through a series of warm-ups and theatrical movement games, including a new one for me: a fast-moving tic-tac-toe, where we progressed around a grid while bouncing a ball. Egads. No bruises but lots of giggles. Then on to our “homework”—a page of text from Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel. If you saw the play, this text inspired the scene of the severed head rolling through a crowd. (Cue the bouncing ball.) The text is full of sound—from the first scream of the bystanders to the rushing panic that ensues. A cacophony of sirens and trolleys and mass hysteria. (And what is the sound of a head separating from the body under a speeding tram?) We are divided into groups. We are to create a sound piece. Using the text as a guide, we can use anything we can find in the rehearsal space to present a sound essay of the head-rolling scene. (There were no watermelons in the room, which, as it turns out, was the choice the company used on stage.) Our group closed our eyes, as the other group offered their “sound play”. It was amazing. I would have thought there were twenty of them instead of seven. I imagined being a blind person in Moscow and being caught up in the hysteria. How interesting to take apart and examine the text in this way. Catherine then lead us in another exercise, culminating in a interpretation of the same text using both sound and movement. It was an afternoon of discovery and improvisation and a terrific preparation for the riveting evening to follow. The Grande Salle was packed for Complicite’s performance that completely enthralled us for over three hours. A surprise for me, as the press description-- a story set in Soviet Russia and somehow tied to Pontius Pilate—sounded so surreal that I wasn’t sure of connecting the dots. I needn’t have worried. This company rocks. Many thanks to Catherine, Manon Meier and the Grand Théâtre for organizing! Complicite offers Teaching Workshops that focus on the same techniques the company uses in its own rehearsals. These can include the study of the neutral mask, clowning, storytelling and other performance skills. There are also bi-annual workshops open to anyone to apply: www.complicite.org 3 New World Theatre Club 10-Minute Play Auditions Hurry Get Yourself Along to the Auditions Open auditions for the next 10 Minute Play Festival will be held on two separate dates: Saturday January 28th @18.00h Sunday February 5th @14.00h Both auditions will be held in the main building of the Abbaye de Neumünster: 28, rue Münster, L-2160 Luxembourg.
