Adjective Degrees Muitas das vezes comparamos pessoas e objectos. Dizemos como são parecidos ou diferentes. ? Quando temos dois objectos ou pessoas dois grupos de objectos ou pessoas, utilizamos o comparativo. Ex. A man’s brain is bigger than a woman’s. Women are cleaner than men. ? Quando há três ou mais pessoas ou objectos, utilizamos o superlativo. Ex. The tallest man in the world was Robert Wadlow. ? Os adjectivos de uma sílaba ou de duas sílabas e terminação em _y, _le, _er, _ow formam o comparativo acrescentando-se ao adjectivo a terminação _er, e formam o superlativo com a terminação _est. Ex. Adjectivo clean dirty simple clever narrow Comparativo cleaner than dirtier than simpler than cleverer than narrower than Superlativo the cleanest the dirtiest the simplest the cleverest the narrowest ? Todos os outros adjectives de duas sílabas ou os adjectivos de 3 ou mais sílabas formam o comparativo com more than e o superlativo com the most Ex. Existem adjectivos irregulars. Ex Adjectivo good bad old* far* ? Utilizamos elder / the eldest quando estamos a falar de membros da família, em expressões, tais como: my elder brother my eldest sister (Não utilizamos elder com than. Não podemos dizer “he’s elder than his brother”.) ? Farther e further referem-se a distâncias, mas further também pode significar adicionalmente Liverpool’s 10 miles away.
