Gravity wave activities in the stratosphere are deduced from GPS radio occultation temperature profiles
obtained by CHAMP satellite. The potential energy profiles are used to analyse the gravity wave activity,
seasonal variability and possible wave sources. Mesospheric gravity wave observations, using all sky
imager, are compared with the stratospheric potential energy in order to investigate the gravity wave
occurrence. The results show that the gravity wave activity over Brazil is strongly correlated with
mesosecale synoptics systems that produce deep convection, such as mesoscale convective systems, squall
lines, cold fronts and the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
