 Newsletter for Parents – 8 August 2016 New Parents’ Meetings At 14:00 on Friday 12th August and at 10:00 on Saturday 13th August, we are holding introductory meetings for parents who might send their children to our school in 2017. If you know of families that might be interested – especially to join the IGCSE or IB classes – please encourage them to attend one of the meetings. Grade Sheets Foundation Course and IG1 students are taking their end-­‐of-­‐term examinations at the moment. We will s end home their Grade Sheets towards the end of this week. These will include brief comments from teachers. Students on the One-­‐year IGCSE Course will be taking their “mock” IGCSE exams from 29 August. We will s end their Grade S heets home soon after the exams end. Folhas de N otas Os estudantes do Foundation Course e do IG1 realizam nestes dias os seus exames do fim do trimestre. Vamos enviar para casa as suas folhas d e notas a té ao final d esta semana. Estas vão incluir um breve comentário dos professores. Os estudantes do curso do One-­‐year IGCSE vão realizar os exames “mock” do IGCSE a partir do dia 29 de Agosto. Vamos enviar as suas folhas d e n otas logo depois d o fim da realização d estes. IB Diploma Programme authorisation The teachers are getting on with the p lanning for starting the IBDP in January 2017. We have to submit a lot of detailed documents by 10 September. So, that is our immediate focus. Autorização do Programa do Diploma IB Os professores procedem com a p lanificação para o início do IBDP em Janeiro d e 2017. Temos d e submeter muitos documentos detalhados até ao dia 10 de Setembro. Assim, este é o nosso foco prioritário neste momento. To help us, two of my former colleagues are visiting Maputo. Will V incent arrived last week and leaves on Wednesday this week. Will teaches in Switzerland, but is also an IB trainer – especially in Biology. Michael Hawkins is Canadian. He arrived yesterday and will stay u ntil Friday. He has set u p schools around the world and will be able to support us in many d ifferent ways. Para nos ajudarem, dois dos meus ex-­‐colegas estão de visita à Maputo. Will Vincent chegou na s emana passada e regressa na Quarta-­‐feira desta semana. O Will é professor na Suíca e é também formador do IB – especialmente em Biologia. Michael Hawkins é Canadiano. Ele chegou ontem e vai ficar até Sexta-­‐feira. Ele já fundou escolas à volta do e será capaz d e nos apoiar de d iversas maneiras. We h ope that the IB will then send a “Verification Team” in early October. This will consist of two IB experts who will check our planning. After that, we are authorised to run the IBDP. Esperamos que o IB envie uma “Equipa de Verificação” nos princípios de Outubro. Construction As part of the preparation for the IB, we are building a laboratory at the back of the school. This work should be finished in mid-­‐September. At the same time, the contractors will be making some changes to the internal s tructure of the s chool. We will try to ensure that these d evelopments cause as little d isruption as possible. Six-­‐year Curriculum As explained before, we are moving to a six-­‐year secondary curriculum at Enko Nyamunda International School. This puts us in line with schools such as Maputo International School – and with most s econdary schools around the world. The outline plan (see also our website) is to have three s tages: • Foundation Course • IGCSE Courses • IB Diploma Programme IGCSEs and the IBDP normally take two years. We expect that many students will need two years to prepare for IGCSEs (through the Foundation Course), but a few may be ready for IGCSEs after one year. Construção Como parte de preparação para o IB, estamos a construir um laboratório na parte traseira da escola. Este trabalho poderá s er concluído até meados d e Setembro. No mesmo período, os construtores vão fazer algumas mudanças à estrutura interna da nossa escola. Vamos tentar assegurar que estas actividades causem o mínimo incómodo possível. Sexto ano do Curriculum Tal como foi explicado antes, estamos a mudar para o s exto ano do currículo do ensino s ecundário na Enko Nyamunda International School. Isto coloca-­‐nos no mesmo n ível com escolas como Maputo International School – tal como no nível d e outras escolas s ecundárias a n ível mundial. O esboço do plano (veja também no nosso site) é termos três fases: • Curso d e Fundação • Cursos do IGCSE • Programa do Diploma IB O IGCSE e o IBDP normalmente têm d uração d e d ois a nos cada. Imaginamos que muitos estudantes vão precisar de dois anos para se prepararem para o IGCSE (através do Curso d e Fundação), mas u ma minoria poderá estar pronta para o IGCSE depois de um ano. The key is “preparedness”. Is s tudent X ready to go on to the n ext stage? Os grupos em cada ano s erão d enominados: • Fundação 1 • Fundação 2 • IGCSE 1 • IGCSE 2 • IBDP 1 • IBDP 2 A chave é “preparação”. O estudante X está preparado para ir à fase s eguinte? The advantage of the IBDP is that, if students do well on it, they are readily accepted into the best universities in the world. In some universities, they can also get significant financial a id. A vantagem do IBDP é que, s e os estudantes concluem-­‐no bem, são prontamente a ceites nas melhores universidades do mundo, podem também receber uma ajuda financeira significante. Students taking the final IBDP examinations b efore they are really ready will still find it p ossible to get into universities, but the choice will be much reduced. Os estudantes que realizarem os exames finais do IBDP antes d e estarem prontos continuarão a ter a p ossibilidade de entrarem nas universidades, mas as oportunidades serão reduzidas. When Enko Nyamunda International School was initially p lanned, it was thought that s tudents might only need five years b efore the IBDP exams. In the light of this, we n eed to look carefully at the optimal path for each student. The year-­‐groups will b e called: • Foundation 1 • Foundation 2 • IGCSE 1 • IGCSE 2 • IBDP 1 • IBDP 2 September/October m eetings Based on the last point, I would like to arrange meetings with Foundation Course and One-­‐year IGCSE parents to discuss the best options for their children in 2017. These can be any time after 10 September. If there are particular times that suit you b est, please contact Denise and book that time. For many students, the decision will be easy, but some will need more careful discussion. In some cases, we may need to wait until Cambridge examination results are known. Cambridge examinations These start in October. Students in the Foundation Course will take Cambridge “Checkpoint” exams in English and Mathematics. These will give objective assessment of how well the s tudents are prepared to start IGCSEs. They will also take a “Progression Test” in Science. The exams start on 10 October and finish on 21 October. The results will only b e known in mid-­‐December. Our One-­‐year IGCSE s tudents sit their examinations between 17 October and 10 November. The results will b e known in mid-­‐January. Fees for 2017 These will be published shortly on our website. Please note that the published fees are for new students. Students who joined the school in this first, pioneering year will receive discounts to show that we value their contributions to the school’s “birth”. Reuniões para Setembro/Outubro Tendo em conta o último ponto, gostaria de organizar reuniões com os pais dos estudantes do Foundation C ourse e do One-­‐year IGCSE para discutirmos as melhores opções para os seus filhos em 2017. Estas podem ser à qualquer momento depois do dia 10 de Setembro. Se tiver horas particulares melhores para si, p or favor contacte a Denise e marque para essa hora. Para muitos estudantes, a decisão será fácil, mas alguns precisam d e u ma decisão mais cuidadosa. Em a lguns casos, precisaremos de aguardar até conhecermos os resultados dos exames d e Cambridge. Exames de Cambridge Estes iniciam em Outubro. Os estudantes no Foundation Course vão realizar os exames “Checkpoint” de Cambridge nas disciplinas de Inglês e Matemática.
