Pizza is essentially a “paulistano” dish, with many different toppings. Another “typical” dish is sushi and sashimi, served all-you-can-eat style in more than 500 Japanese restaurants. But paulistanos don’t just live off Argentinean parrilas, Arab turnovers, Spanish paellas, German eisbeins or Mexican tacos. There is also Brazilian cuisine – from Bahian acarajés to Gaucho barbecue to dishes from all over the country. Coffee, a “paulistano” passion, is taken seriously with special spots for enjoying it and bars with coffee-based drinks. The city has at least a dozen special bakeries that serve quality sandwiches, winter soups, breakfasts and brunch. If culinary experience is essential to get to know a city, this is even more true of São Paulo. 8 ©3 Pizza is essentialto the 9 AN D The state Pinacoteca ART DIVERSITY São Paulo is home to some of the most important cultural events in the country. There are film festivals, shows, fashion and exhibitions. The cultural scenario is exhilarating. Access www.cidadedesaopaulo.com for information about local programming. The newest event is the Virada Cultural (Cultural Turnover), with 24 hours of art and culture where attractions and museums stay open all night and theater, dance and musical groups take over the streets. CARNIVAL AND POPULAR CELEBRATIONS ©5 City ballet Every year, the São Paulo Carnival proves that it’s one of the most important cultural events in the country. The city has its own Sambadrome with boxes and bleachers, and the main parades are on Carnival Friday and Saturday. There are also other traditional popular celebrations such as the Italian San Vito in June, Nossa Senhora de Achiropita in August and San Gennaro in September, as well as the Japanese Tanabata Matsuri in July. ©4 10 11 GET TO KNOW SÃO PAULO C U L T U RE SÃO PAULO BY REGION Municipal Market ©1 ©2 Reflection of the Martinelli Edifice D OWNTOWN HOME OF MUSIC AND ART In the center of the capital, the past lends the tone. TOURS The Pateo do Collegio is the foundation milestone of the city. The Sé Cathedral, with gorgeous architecture, is an icon, and the São Bento monastery has masses with Gregorian chants. The Pinacoteca houses a precious collection of paintings that mark the history of the arts in Brazil and sculptures, including works of Rodin. Another strong point are the temporary exhibitions. The Sacred Art Museum has the second largest chandelier in the world, second only to the Vatican, and the Napolitano Crèche, one of the largest of its kind, with 1,620 pieces from the 17th century. Another attraction is the Municipal Theater, designed 12 by architect Ramos de Azevedo. The Sala São Paulo, one of the concert halls with the best acoustics in the world, has ongoing programming. In addition to being an enormous green area (1.6 million m2), it houses the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) with a collection of sculptures, paintings and photographs emphasizing post-1945 Brazilian art; the Afro-Brazilian Museum; and the Biennial Foundation, which produces large events such as the Art Biennial, SP Fashion Week and sponsors the Ibirapuera Planetarium. The Oca offers itinerant exhibitions. In the Ipiranga neighborhood is the Paulista Museum, or Ipiranga Museum, ©4 Exihbition “Painted Bodies at the Oca” 18 as it is known. Created in 1890, its gardens were inspired by Versailles and it has an art collection from the 19th and 20th centuries. This is where Dom Pedro I gave his cry of freedom for Brazil in 1822. Another essential visit is to the Maria Luisa and Oscar Americano Foundation in Morumbi. In addition to its art collection and green space, the foundation offers a famous tea service. In the same neighborhood is the largest soccer stadium in the city, the Morumbi. SHOPPING In Moema, there are top line stores with clothing and footwear, and one of the largest shopping centers in the city, the Ibirapuera. Other shopping paradises are the Morumbi and Marketplace malls. The D&D shopping center, on Marginal Pinheiros, specializes in decoration. Nightlife The region has a knack for night fun, most of the action in the city is in the Marginal Pinheiros-Moema-Vila Olímpia triangle, where there is also an huge number of bars and restaurants. At Vila Olimpia there are nightclubs with everything from Samba to Rock, MPB, and Jazz shows or Djs with electronic music. Night in the south side has no curfew. 19 WEST Immigrant Memorial Tram SI D e ©2 NORTH MARKED BY IMMIGRATION AND COLONIZATION The west Side still has important traces from the history of São Paulo. One of them is the São Miguel Chapel, in São Miguel Paulista. Dating from 1622, it is the oldest church in the city. The chapel was renovated in 1940 and became a cathedral, but you can still see the adobe walls erected in the 17th century. Another important historical relic is the Immigrant Memorial in Moóca. Constructed in 1887, it contains objects, photos and documents from the time when it was a shelter for immigrants heading to cafe plantations. The parks in the region are also excellent options for recreation, such as the Carmo Park, where there is one of the most modern planetariums in the Americas, with state of the art equipment. At the side of the entrance to the Planetarium is the Itaquera SESC Itaquera, which has excellent free or reasonably priced programming. Carnival Parade SI D e SAMBA AND A VAST GREEN AREA AT THE ENTRY GATE The North Side is the gate of entry into São Paulo for most people arriving by bus. The Tietê Bus Terminal is there, which serves more than 600 locations in Brazil, as well as in Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina. Next to it is the Anhembi Park, the major exhibition center in Latin America, and the State Archive, which offers free browsing of old and new newspapers and magazines. For those who prefer to relax, the Freguesia do Ò Square is ideal. With a church surrounded by bars and the traditional Divino celebration (in May), it looks like a country plaza in the middle of the capital. Rehearsal spaces of various samba schools are concentrated in the area: Império da Casa Verde, Mocidade, Rosas de Ouro, Unidos do Peruche, X9, etc. There are also green spaces, such as the Horto Florestal and the Serra da Cantareira State Park with its ecological trails. ©3 View from the Cantareira Mountains 20 21 © Photoss: 1 Marcos hirakawa 2 jerferson pancieri 3 andré Stéfano SÃO PAULO BY REGION ©1 SÃO PAULO. WELCOME TO PARADISE Respect for all religions is a rule among “paulistanos”. Immigrants and people of all beliefs live together in harmony in the city. Religious celebrations are commemorated by all paulistantos. One of the most traditional is the birth of Buddha, which always fills the Liberdade plaza. Temples are open to all visitors, who should respect local customs such as covering the head in synagogues and taking off shoes in mosques and Buddhist temples. The “paulistano” is not just someone who was born in the city, but also those who have adopted it as their own, such as thousands of “pernambucanos”, “baianos”, “gaúchos” and “fluminenses”, as well as foreigner from other countries. What do all of them have in common? Perhaps their love for the city and a coffee break to talk with friends. The “paulistano” also loves to shop, have fun and eat very well. São Paulo is well known for its diversity. It’s the land of people of all colors, beliefs and origins, where foreigners and Brazilians live together in harmony.
