esperança para os novos estudantes da NOVA!
The academic year of 2014-2015 which now begins, must be a path of hope
for new students of NOVA!
Foi assim que o preparámos, não só para as “caloiras” e os “caloiros”,
que “entraram” através do concurso nacional de acesso, mas também
para os restantes grupos que agora iniciam um novo ciclo de formação:
mestrados, doutoramentos e cursos não conferentes de grau. Uma palavra
especial para os estudantes Erasmus e para os estudantes internacionais
que queremos apoiar com especial carinho para que se sintam em casa.
We prepared it with this purpose, not only for “freshers” who “entered”
through the national access examination, but also for the other groups
who are now beginning a new training cycle: master and doctoral courses
as well as not-conferring-degree courses. Let me have a special word for
Erasmus students and for international students whom we would like to
warmly support in order to make them feel at home.
Esta brochura foi desenhada especialmente para todos vós. É um ponto de
partida para vos estimular a conhecerem melhor a NOVA e estou certo que
o farão utilizando as novas formas de comunicação digital onde navegam,
seguramente, com grande mestria.
This brochure was designed especially for you all. It is a starting point to
stimulate you to get to know NOVA better and I am sure you will do it using
the new forms of digital communication that you already master.
Entre esta mensagem em papel e a sua contraparte digital, já disponível
no nosso site, fica a distância que separa, no tempo, a Torre de Belém, que
usamos na nossa imagem de apresentação e o Edifício da Reitoria, virado
para o século XXI!
Mas o que aproxima esses dois edifícios emblemáticos é a incessante
procura do conhecimento, do desconhecido, do sonhado, que sempre
caraterizou Portugal.
A NOVA é a universidade da área metropolitana de Lisboa porque estamos
situados em três concelhos, e brevemente em quatro, desta nossa
grande metrópole unida pelo Tejo e virada para o Atlântico. Somos uma
universidade cosmopolita, inserida na sociedade, com a qual construímos,
cada vez mais, laços e parcerias.
Os nossos quarenta anos de história, cumpridos em 2013, atestam
um progresso notável em múltiplas áreas do conhecimento, não só na
investigação como no ensino, ao serviço do progresso de Portugal como
nação inserida num mundo cada vez mais globalizado. A nossa diversidade,
aliada a uma crescente coesão interna, tem permitido um aumento de
formações interdisciplinares, nacionais e internacionais, aliado a uma cada
vez maior participação em projetos europeus e mundiais.
O ano letivo de 2013-2014, que aqui vos apresentamos sinteticamente, foi
um dos nossos melhores anos mas estou certo que, com o empenho de
todos, iremos fazer ainda melhor em 2014-2015.

The distance between this paper-written message and its digital counterpart
– already available on our website – is equivalent, in time, to the one that
separates the Tower of Belém, in our display picture, and the Rectorate
Building, oriented to the XXI century!
However, the main similarity between these two iconic buildings is the
constant pursuit of knowledge, of the unknown and the dreamed: something
that has always featured Portugal.
NOVA is the university of Lisbon metropolitan area because it is present in
three municipalities, shortly in four, of this great metropolis united by the
Tagus and facing the Atlantic Ocean. We are a cosmopolitan university, part
of a society with which we are establishing increasing ties and partnerships.
Our forty years of history, completed in 2013, show a remarkable progress in
multiple areas of knowledge, not only in research but also in teaching, thus
enabling the progress of Portugal as a nation in an increasingly globalized
world. Our diversity, allied to a growing internal cohesion, has allowed an
enhancement of national and international interdisciplinary training as well
as an increasing participation in European and world projects.
The academic year of 2013-2014, which we are here briefly presenting to
you, has been one of our best years but I am sure that with the commitment
of us all, we will do even better in 2014-2015.

O Conselho Geral que, no caso da NOVA, se compõe de 14 membros
internos, incluindo 3 estudantes, e 7 membros externos de entre os quais é
eleito o Presidente, é o mais importante órgão de governação das instituições
de ensino superior. Não só repousa sobre o Conselho a responsabilidade de
eleger o Reitor e de apreciar os actos dos restantes órgãos de governação,
como de aprovar os quantitativos das propinas, os orçamentos e contas, e os
planos e relatórios, tanto anuais como estratégicos.
No 1º quadriénio do funcionamento do Conselho, tornou-se evidente a
eficácia deste como elemento disciplinador do governo da Instituição. Não só
se aprovaram as contas de gerência dos vários anos e os respectivos Planos
e Orçamentos, como se introduziram na gestão evidentes aperfeiçoamentos.
Adoptou-se nomeadamente o Plano Estratégico de médio prazo (2012-16) e
certificaram-se as Contas consolidadas. A NOVA está pois preparada para
adoptar o regime fundacional que o Plano preconiza.
Foi já na sua primeira sessão de 2014 que o Conselho entendeu, sob
proposta do Presidente, aprovar alterações estatutárias que lhe permitiram
eleger um Vice-presidente, também de entre os membros cooptados. A
escolha recaiu sobre a Conselheira Vera Pires Coelho cuja experiência de
gestão se tornou possível aproveitar em profundidade.
A presidência assim constituída iniciou imediatamente, e a propósito da
aprovação do Plano de Actividades para 2014, uma nova metodologia que
consistiu em entrevistar um a um, com a concordância do Reitor, todos os
membros da Equipa Reitoral. Com base nessas entrevistas, elaborar-se-á
um projecto de parecer que, uma vez aprovado pelos membros externos,
ficará em condições de ser sujeito a apreciação do plenário.
Lamenta-se que, por razões estranhas à Instituição, não tenham ainda
sido criadas condições para a adopção do regime fundacional. Entraram
porém em funcionamento as restantes componentes do referido Plano,
nomeadamente a Escola Doutoral, e deram-se passos no sentido da
internacionalização do ensino, do desenvolvimento da investigação, da
formação de recursos humanos, e da angariação de novas receitas.
Falando em nome do órgão a que presido, agradeço ao Magnífico Reitor
e à Equipa Reitoral, bem como aos Directores das Unidades Orgânicas,
o clima de compreensão que nos rodeia e o apoio que nos têm dado. E
é com palavras de esperança e calorosa amizade que saúdo todos os
professores, estudantes e funcionários, aos quais, sem esquecer caloiras e
caloiros, desejo as maiores felicidades.
The General Council is the most important governance body in Portuguese
higher education institutions. In the case of NOVA, it is composed of 14
internal members including 3 students, and 7 co-opted external members
one of which is elected as its President. The General Council has significant
responsibilities, namely electing the Rector, monitoring the activity of the other
University governance bodies and approving the student fees, the budget
proposals and the financial statements, as well as the annual and strategic
plans and reports.
In the course of its first four years of activity, the role of the General Council
as a regulatory element in the University’s governance became evident. As
the financial reports and the University plans and budgets were approved,
significant improvements in the institution management were acknowledged.
The Strategic medium-term Plan (2012-2016) was adopted and the financial
reports were approved. NOVA is therefore prepared to adopt the foundation
statute as recommended by the Strategic Plan.
During the first 2014 session the Council approved the President’s proposal
regarding statutory changes allowing the election of a Vice-President from
among the co-opted members. The Counselor Vera Pires Coelho was chosen,
which allowed to deeply benefit from her management experience.
In the context of the approval of the Activity Plan for 2014, the presidency thus
constituted immediately initiated a new methodology which consisted on
interviewing each member of the Rectoral Team with the Rector’s approval.
Based on these interviews, a draft will be submitted to the external members’
approval, followed by the ballot of the plenary assembly.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond the University control, the legal
conditions were not met to adopt the foundation statute. Nevertheless the
other goals of the strategic plan were already achieved, namely the Doctoral
School, and steps were taken to improve teaching internationalization,
research development, human resources formation and fundraising.
On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank the Rector Magnificus and
the Rectoral Team, as well as the Deans of the Academic Units for their
cooperation and continued support. I would also like to greet professors,
students and staff with a word of hope and friendship, and to address a
special word to the freshmen to whom I wish all the success.

NOVA DOCTORAL SCHOOL
A NOVA Escola Doutoral iniciou a sua atividade em janeiro de 2013, com uma
parceria académica com o Imperial College London, uma colaboração institucional
com a Fundação Oriente e o suporte da Caixa Geral de Depósitos. Integra o
Programa Europeu para pessoal não académico das Escolas Doutorais: PRIDE Professionals in Doctoral Education.
NOVA Doctoral School launched on January 2013. Sponsored by Caixa Geral de
Depósitos NOVA Doctoral School has an academic partnership with the Imperial
College London and an institutional collaboration with Fundação Oriente. It is also
a partner in the European project for non-academic staff: PRIDE - Professionals in
Doctoral Education.
Visa contribuir para a excelência da formação doutoral da NOVA, através da oferta
de formação complementar e transversal aos estudantes do 3.º ciclo e aos seus
supervisores. Tem como objectivo a criação de um espaço aberto de discussão e
criatividade, fomentando a partilha das melhores práticas entre os programas doutorais
e promovendo a cooperação interinstitucional, a nível nacional e internacional.
NOVA Doctoral School aims to enhance excellency in Doctoral Education at NOVA,
offering transferable skills training to Ph.D. students and Supervisors; creating a space
of discussion and creativity and promoting experience exchanges among different
doctoral programs and cooperation with national and international institutions.

A Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT/NOVA), localizada no Campus de
Caparica (30 ha), a sul de Lisboa, é hoje uma das mais prestigiadas escolas
portuguesas de ciências e de engenharia. Com cerca de 8 000 estudantes,
dispõe de 440 docentes (95% doutorados) e 200 funcionários não docentes
nos seus 14 Setores Departamentais e 6 Serviços de Apoio.
The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT/NOVA) located at the Campus
of Caparica (30 ha), south of Lisbon, is today one of the most prestigious
Portuguese engineering and science schools. With nearly 8 000 students, 440
academic (95% holding a PhD) and 200 non-academic staff, FCT is organized
in 14 Departments and 6 Support Services.
A FCT participa nos três consórcios patrocinados pelo Estado Português,
colaborando com o MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), a CMU
(Universidade de Carnegie Mellon) e a UTA (Universidade do Texas em
Austin), na oferta de programas doutorais e de estudos avançados. Com uma
acentuada cultura de relacionamento com o exterior, a FCT/NOVA mantém ligações
estreitas com diversas universidades portuguesas e estrangeiras, quer relativas
ao intercâmbio de docentes e estudantes, concretizado através de 260 acordos
bilaterais, quer no âmbito de inúmeros projetos de investigação, nacionais e
europeus.
FCT participates in the consortia sponsored by the Portuguese State with the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Carnegie Mellon
(CMU) and the University of Texas at Austin (UTA) offering some of its advanced
study programmes. With an intensive relationship culture with the exterior, FCT/
NOVA has strong links with several Portuguese and Foreign Universities, related
to the exchange of teachers or students in the framework of the existing 260
bilateral agreements or within the numerous European and National research
projects.
A recente introdução em todos os cursos de Licenciatura e de Mestrado
Integrado do “Perfil Curricular FCT”, visa dotar os alunos de capacidades
vitais para um rápido ingresso no mercado de trabalho através da formação
em soft-skills e da realização de um estágio profissional numa empresa
da área de estudo do estudante, aspetos cada vez mais valorizados pelas
empresas. Também a formação em empreendedorismo aumentou a já
abundante existência de iniciativas empresarias na FCT, conduzindo à criação
de várias spin-offs de sucesso, as quais contribuem para a transferência de
conhecimento e para a relevância social da sua investigação.
The recent introduction in all its Undergraduate Programs (1st Cycle) and Master
Degrees (2nd Cycle) of “FCT’s Curricular Profile”, aims to endow students
with vital capacities for a quick labour market admission, such as soft-skills
and a professional internship in a company with activity in the same area as
the students’ study field, which can be in Portugal or abroad. An education
in entrepreneurship was also not forgotten, thus increasing even more the
abundant existence in FCT of students’ and Professors’ entrepreneurial drive
which led to the creation of many successful spin-offs, that transfer knowledge
to the market and help create value and social impact.

Foi em 1985 que concluí o curso e ao longo da minha carreira profissional ligada sempre ao sector químico em empresas nacionais e
multinacionais ocupando funções no domínio dos processos, produção, e na gestão de equipas multidisciplinares, pude constatar que
o nível de formação recebida e a exigência imprimida pelos docentes garantiram a assimilação dos conhecimentos e o domínio das
ferramentas necessárias para o desempenho das minhas atividades. Realço a qualidade dos docentes (…) exemplos e desafios que
incutiram nos formandos conseguindo uma colaboração e relacionamento docente-aluno, que se mantiveram para além dos domínios da
faculdade. Foi nesta simbiose entre o dar, o receber e o transformar que a FCT me surpreendeu como espaço modelo de desenvolvimento
de capacidades e de adaptação a novos desafios.
I graduated in 1985 and throughout my career, always connected to the Chemical Sector in national and multinational companies, I worked in
Process, Production and I managed multidisciplinary teams. Along the way I could see that the high level and demanding training I received
from my teachers gave me the ability to assimilate knowledge and master the necessary tools to assure a good professional performance.
I emphasize the teachers quality (...) examples and challenges that they instilled in students, which made possible such cooperation and close
teacher-student relationship that remained beyond the realms of college. It was in this symbiosis between giving, getting and becoming that FCT
surprised me as a model environment that facilitates the development of new capacities and adaptability to new challenges.

Criada em 1977, a Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH/NOVA)
é uma unidade interdisciplinar cujos objetivos de ensino e investigação se
caracterizam pela diversidade e criatividade de saberes. Situada no centro de
Lisboa, integra um total de 5 051 alunos, sendo 2 775 de licenciatura, 1 360 de
mestrado e pós-graduações e 807 de doutoramento. O corpo docente conta
com 310 membros, na sua quase totalidade doutorados.
Founded in 1977, the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH) (Faculty
of Social Sciences and Humanities) is an interdisciplinary unit with teaching and
research objectives, characterized by the diversity and creativity of knowledge.
Located near Lisbon city center, it hosts a total of 5 051 students, 2 775 in
undergraduate programmes, 1 360 in masters and 807 in PhD programmes. It
has 310 professors, almost all holding a PhD degree.
A FCSH/NOVA disponibiliza 14 licenciaturas (uma das quais em horário
pós-laboral), durante as quais os alunos podem beneficiar de programas de
mobilidade (ex.: Erasmus), que envolvem anualmente mais de 350 estudantes.
Na formação pós-graduada, oferece 10 cursos de pós-graduação, 43 cursos
de mestrado e 24 de doutoramento, todos lecionados em regime pós-laboral.
FCSH offers 14 undergraduate programmes (one of them in after-work schedule),
during which students can benefit from mobility initiatives (e.g.: Erasmus),
annually involving more than 350 students. In graduate training, FCSH offers
10 postgraduate programmes, 43 masters degrees and 24 PhD degrees, all
provided in after-work schedule.
A excelência na investigação em áreas das Ciências Sociais e Humanas, uma
das vocações da FCSH/NOVA, é assegurada por 19 unidades de investigação
avaliadas pelos painéis internacionais da Fundação para a Ciência e a
Tecnologia (FCT) – das quais, duas com “Excelente” e 12 com “Muito Bom”
- onde trabalham mais de 1200 investigadores integrados e/ou associados.
The excellence of research in Social and Human Sciences, one of the missions
of FCSH, is assured by 19 research centres assessed by international panels
from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia – two of them rated as “Excellent”
and 12 as “Very Good” – that gather more than 1200 researchers integrated
or associated. The Faculty hosts 204 PhD grantees and 313 postdoctoral
researchers.

Aquilo que tenho alcançado não seria possível sem os anos que passei na FCSH/NOVA. Esse foi um tempo em que me sentia a evoluir
diariamente. Fiz amigos em vários cursos que, ainda hoje, encontro na minha vida profissional e pessoal. Nesses anos, tudo estava em aberto,
tudo parecia possível. E não me enganava, tudo é possível.
What I have accomplished wouldn’t have been possible without the years I spent in FCSH/NOVA. At that time, I felt that I was evolving every day.
I made friends in several undergraduate courses who I meet, still today, in my professional and personal life. During those years, everything was open,
everything seemed possible. And I was not wrong, everything is possible.

A NOVA Medical School / Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS/FCM), é uma
unidade orgânica da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA), desde 1977. Tem
1 603 alunos de pré-graduação (incluindo 90 em mobilidade internacional) e
503 em formação pós-graduada. Conta com 411 docentes e investigadores,
dos quais 30% doutorados.
The NOVA Medical School / Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS/FCM),
is Universidade NOVA de Lisboa’s (NOVA) medical school since 1977. With
1 603 undergraduate students (including 90 in international mobility), NMS/
FCM has 503 postgraduate students and 411 professors and researchers
(30% of whom with a PhD degree).
No ano letivo de 2014-2015 continuará a implementação do Novo Plano
de Estudos, de começo gradual no 1.º ano. O ensino clínico decorre em
instituições de saúde, públicas e privadas, articuladas com a NMS/FCM
através de protocolos homologados pelo Ministério da Saúde e pelo Ministério
da Educação e Ciência.
In 2011 we started the implementation of the New Curriculum, which will continue
in 2014-2015. The clinical teaching takes place in various health institutions
(public and private) partnered with the medical school through protocols ratified
by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science.
A NMS/FCM oferece um vasto leque de cursos e programas de pós-graduação
e investigação, contando com um número significativo de grupos de excelência
em biomedicina, investigação translacional, investigação clínica e epidemiologia
e serviços.
A abertura do novo Pólo de Investigação do Campus de Sant’Ana, para além
das melhorias às atividades pedagógicas (nova biblioteca e novo centro de
treino em competências clínicas), veio dar um contributo muito importante
para o desenvolvimento da investigação na Faculdade, em estreita colaboração
com o Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC) e o Centro de
Investigação em Genética Molecular Humana (CIGMH).
NMS/FCM offers a great diversity of postgraduate courses and programmes
in different health areas. NMS/FCM has a significant number of groups of
excellence in biomedicine, translational research, clinical research, and
epidemiology and services.
The new Research Pole opening in Campus de Sant’Ana gave an important
contribution to the development of the Faculty’s research, in close collaboration
with the CEDOC – Research Centre on Chronic Diseases and the CIGMH –
Research Centre on Human Molecular Genetics. It also provided improvements
to educational activities, such as the new library and the new training center for
clinical skills.

A Nova Direito, a Faculdade de Direito da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa,
foi fundada em 1996, como ‘polo inovador no desenvolvimento da Ciência
jurídica’. A escolha alargada de disciplinas de opção e os Cursos em áreas
pouco exploradas (Segurança, Desporto, Justiça, Arbitragem, Imigrantes)
acentuam a distinção da marca NOVA.
O 1.º Ciclo, para além das principais disciplinas jurídicas, oferece um
vasto leque de disciplinas de opção com o objetivo de proporcionar uma
compreensão alargada do mundo intelectual e social em que o Direito se insere.
O 2.º Ciclo divide-se em Jurídicas Empresariais, Forenses, Internacionais,
Sociais e Direito Público, podendo os estudantes escolher entre a elaboração
de uma tese ou um relatório de estágio ou projeto, abrangendo ainda a área
do Direito e Segurança. O 3.º Ciclo, implicando a discussão do Projeto e a
apresentação de um tema ao SPEED, permite ultrapassar a mera participação
nos tradicionais seminários.
O CEDIS ( Centro de Investigação & Desenvolvimento sobre Direito
e Sociedade), o Laboratório LRAL ( Resolução de Litígios), a Antígona
( Igualdade e Discriminação), o CPIC ( Concorrência e Propriedade
Intelectual ) têm congregado a investigação de professores e doutorandos.
The NOVA Law School at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded in 1996,
in order to challenge a rather conservative, traditional way of teaching and
learning law in Portugal.
The Faculty teaches three cycles (Bachelor, Master, PhD). The first takes eight
semesters, the second three and the third from eight up to ten. In all of them the
students are prepared both in core, compulsory subjects and in rather a wide
variety of optional courses.
In order to answer the growing demand by foreign students, some courses,
some seminars (European Master second semester courses, in cooperation with
Universidade de Coimbra) and theses supervision are carried out in English.
CEDIS is our main research centre. We host centres of public (community)
service which also carry out some teaching and research: RAL (Alternative
Dispute Resolution); ANTÍGONA (issues of discrimination, with a view to helping
actual or potential victims); CPIC (copyright and patents legal issues).

O Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT) é uma jovem Instituição
centenária, impar na academia portuguesa. Vocacionado inicialmente para
o estudo, ensino e clínica das doenças tropicais, evoluiu recentemente para
uma abordagem integrada que vai desde o nível molecular aos sistemas
globais de saúde, adotando, sem abandonar a sua vocação tropical, um
forte empenho na resolução de problemas de saúde que, em todos os
continentes, afligem os mais pobres e os excluídos.
The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine – IHMT is a young centenary
institution, unique in the Portuguese academy. Aimed initially at the study,
teaching and medical practice related to tropical diseases, IHMT has recently
evolved towards an integrated approach, ranging from the molecular level to
global health systems, adopting, without abandoning its tropical vocation, a
strong commitment to solving health problems that afflict the poorest and the
excluded in all continents.
Desde a sua origem, o Instituto tem estado à frente da investigação das
grandes endemias tropicais, e estas linhas de trabalho continuam atuais,
reforçadas por estudos sobre tuberculose, viroses prevalentes nos trópicos,
saúde dos viajantes ou populações migrantes e sistemas de serviços de
saúde, que lhe emprestam um forte cariz internacional no âmbito de redes e
projetos em parceria.
Since its inception, the Institute have been at the forefront of research directed at
tropical endemic diseases, and these lines are still part of the current work of the
Instituto, reinforced by research work on tuberculosis, several viruses prevalent
in the tropics, travelers’ and migrant population’s health and health services
systems, which lend to the Instituto a strong international character as part of
networks or projects in partnership,.
O trabalho de investigação está intimamente associado a programas de
doutoramento e mestrado, bem como à assessoria técnica aos ministérios
da saúde, em Portugal e outros países. A qualidade do seu desempenho foi

The research work is closely linked to several masters and doctoral programs, but
also through its technical assistance work to the ministries of health in Portugal
and other countries. The quality performance of this work was recognized by
the WHO, when it assigned us the status of Collaborating Center for Health
Workforce Policy and Planning.

A primeira formação que fiz no IHMT foi no ano letivo 78-79. O Curso de Pós-graduação em Saúde Pública e Medicina Tropical forneceu-me
instrumentos para desenvolver trabalho a nível da Direção Geral de Saúde de Cabo Verde numa perspetiva de saúde pública, mais virada para as
doenças típicas da região dos Trópicos.
A ligação ao IHMT continuou e, em 2011, vi a oportunidade de fazer o Doutoramento em Saúde Internacional, com especialidade em Políticas de
Saúde, agarrei-a e hoje sinto-me num ambiente extremamente afável e amigo. O IHMT tem uma história feita de factos reais. Conheço e reconheço
todo o empenhamento e o contributo do Instituto, quer no apoio direto da resolução dos problemas de saúde das populações, nomeadamente nos
PALOP, quer nos domínios da formação.
The first training I took in IHMT was in the 78-79 school year. The Graduate Program in Public Health and Tropical Medicine provided me with
tools to develop work within the Directorate General of Health of Cape Verde in a public health perspective, which is more focused on typical
diseases of the Tropics region.
The connection to IHMT has continued and in 2011, I saw the opportunity to take a PhD in International Health, specializing in Health Policy. I
took it and today I find myself in an extremely affable and friendly environment. IHMT has a story taken from real facts. I am aware and recognize
all the commitment and contribution of the Institute, either in supporting directly the resolution of population’s health problems, particularly in
Portuguese Speaking African Countries, or in providing training.

The NOVA School of Statistics and Information Management (ISEGI-NOVA) was
founded in 1989 in response to the shortage of senior specialists in information
management and the growing need for using new information technologies.

O ITQB coordena um dos maiores laboratórios associados do país, que
inclui também o Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, o Instituto de Biologia
Experimental e Tecnológica, e o Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas.
ITQB coordinates one of the largest “Laboratórios Associados” in Portugal,
which also includes the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, the Instituto de Biologia
Experimental e Tecnológica and the Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas.
O carácter multidisciplinar do ITQB torna-o num centro de referência para a
formação avançada de investigadores. Atualmente, acolhe 54 laboratórios
independentes, agrupados em cinco divisões de investigação, num total
de mais de 450 investigadores, com diferentes percursos e interesses
de investigação. Os investigadores usufruem de excelentes instalações,
equipamentos e serviços de apoio, alguns únicos no país.
ITQB’s highly multidisciplinary nature makes it a leading centre for the
advanced training of researchers in Portugal. Currently, it hosts 54 independent
laboratories grouped into five research divisions and comprising a staff of more
than 450 researchers, with different backgrounds and research interests. They
benefit from outstanding research facilities, equipment, and scientific support
services, some of which are unique in the country.

A Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (ENSP) é uma instituição vocacionada

Criada em 1966, a ENSP é uma instituição pioneira no ensino da saúde

of health organizations. Through a broad network of national and international
partnerships, it focuses on education, research and community actions.
A Escola tem um corpo docente experiente e reconhecido, integrado em
áreas disciplinares muito diversas, tais como Epidemiologia e Estatística,
Saúde Ambiental e Ocupacional, Promoção da Saúde, Política de Saúde,

The ENSP welcomes around 170 new students each year for courses of more
than one year duration (doctorate, masters, specialization). The School’s students
have varied undergraduate backgrounds, such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy,

todo, e como parte da sociedade. Hoje, sou um profissional mais capaz para enfrentar os desafios da gestão em saúde. Para quem trabalha na área
da saúde, a ENSP é uma referência essencial na construção do sistema de saúde português. Ser alumni da ENSP é fazer parte desta construção.
I graduated in Hospital Administration at the National School of Public Health (ENSP) and then followed the course in Management and Organization
of Primary Health Care. At the School I studied, learned and discussed; tools were made available and I was offered the perception of the health
system as a whole, as part of society. After following these courses, I am better able to face the challenges of health services management. For
those working in health, the ENSP is an essential reference in the construction of the Portuguese health system. To be an ENSP alumni is to be
part of this construction.

The mission of the Social Welfare Services of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa
(SASNOVA) is to guarantee that no student is excluded from the university due
to financial difficulties, thus providing direct social support to 1st and 2nd cycle
students: Scholarships and Emergency Support.
Os SASNOVA concedem ainda apoios sociais indiretos a todos os alunos da
NOVA, nomeadamente:
SASNOVA provide indirect social support to all NOVA students, in the following
areas:
Refeição Social | nas cantinas e cafetarias localizadas nos campi da NOVA;
Food services | through canteens and cafeterias located in NOVA’s campi;
Alojamento | nas residências universitárias, preferencialmente ocupadas por
alunos bolseiros e por estudantes estrangeiros de programas de mobilidade;
Accommodation | through student housing, preferentially occupied by portuguese
scholarship students and foreign students on exchange programmes
Desporto | apoiando a presença de alunos em campeonatos universitários
e organizando eventos desportivos;
Sports | supporting the presence of students in university championships and
organizing sports events;
Cultura | apoiando iniciativas de alunos e concebendo atividades próprias,
nomeadamente o Concurso de Fotografia da NOVA e o Festival NOVA Música;
Saúde | proporcionando consultas médicas de Clínica Geral, Psiquiatria,
Psicologia Clínica e de Nutrição.
Os SASNOVA são ainda responsáveis pela coordenação do Fundo de Apoio
Social da NOVA, constituído em 2013.
Os SASNOVA asseguram a gestão da marca NOVA UNIVERSITY, em
coordenação com a “Loja da Universidade”, promovendo a imagem da NOVA
através do merchandising.

O projeto FELLOW-MUNDUS é uma parceria no âmbito do Erasmus Mundus Ação 2, que visa contribuir, através da mobilidade de estudantes e de
pessoal docente e não docente, para o reforço dos laços sustentáveis nas áreas da educação, cultura, economia, ciência e tecnologia, entre a União
Europeia e os países Latino-Americanos.O projeto visa reforçar a cooperação entre as Instituições de Ensino Superior Europeias e as Universidades
Latino-Americanas, possibilitando a mobilidade de estudantes, investigadores, docentes e pessoal não docente através de um esquema de bolsas,
desenvolvendo os curriculum dos participantes, ampliando a troca de conhecimentos e a partilha de experiências e boas práticas. O projeto
proporcionará ainda às Instituições de Ensino Superior latino-Americanas a oportunidade de organizar um programa de intercâmbio universitário,
modelado segundo os princípios do Acordo de Bolonha e as diretrizes do Programa Erasmus.
The FELLOW-MUNDUS project is an Erasmus Mundus Action 2 partnership, which will contribute through the exchange of students and academic staff
to the reinforcement of sustainable educational, cultural, economic, scientific and technological links between the European Union and Latin-American
countries. The project aims to strengthen the cooperation between European Union Higher Education Institutions and Latin-American Universities,
enabling the mobility of students, researchers and academic staff through a scholarship scheme, developing individuals’ curriculum, enhancing
the transfer of know-how and the sharing of experiences and good practices. It will provide the Latin-American (LA) Higher Education Institutions
the opportunity to build up a university exchange scheme, modeled under the principles of the Bologna Accord and the guidelines of the Erasmus
Programme.

simultaneamente enriquecido pela eminência do mérito das personalidades que assim ficam associadas ao seu corpo de doutores.
The Doctor Honoris Causa degree is a traditional practice of great significance. The merit of the personalities who become associated to the University through the
Honoris Causa Doctorate contributes to the prestige of the University.
Mario Vargas Llosa
Escritor, jornalista, docente universitário e político, Mario Vargas Llosa é um dos mais premiados autores da América Latina pelo
seu trabalho como romancista, ensaísta e dramaturgo. A relevância da sua obra no contexto da literatura ibero-americana foi
reconhecida, em 1994, pelo Prémio Cervantes e, em 2010, num plano universal, pelo Prémio Nobel da Literatura. Recebeu ainda
o Prémio PEN/Nabokov, o Prémio Príncipe das Astúrias e o Prémio Grinzane Cavour.
Da sua vasta obra destaca-se “A Cidade e os Cães” (Prémio Biblioteca Breve e Prémio da Crítica Espanhola), “A Casa Verde”
(Prémio Nacional do Romance do Peru, Prémio da Crítica Espanhola, Prémio Rómulo Gallegos) e “O Herói Discreto”, o seu
mais recente romance.
Writer, journalist, university professor and politician, Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the most celebrated authors of Latin America for his
work as a novelist, essayist and playwright. The relevance of Vargas Llosa work in the context of the Ibero-American literature was
recognised by the Cervantes Prize in 1994, and its worldwide impact, by the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. He also received the
PEN/Nabokov Award, Prince of Asturias Award and the Grinzane Cavour Prize.
From his vast work we highlight “The Time of the Hero” (winner of the Premio Biblioteca Breve and Premio de la Critica de Narrativa
Castellana), “The Green House” (Peruvian National Prize, Premio de la Critica de Narrativa Castellana, Rómulo Gallegos International
Novel Prize) and “El Heroe Discreto” (“A Discreet Hero”), his most recent novel.

Juan Marchena Fernández
Juan Marchena Fernández, doutorado em História da América, é um dos mais reputados especialistas mundiais nesta área.
Professor Titular da Universidade Pablo de Olavide, Espanha, onde é Diretor da área de História da América e Diretor do
Mestrado e Doutoramento em História Latino-Americana, foi consultor e investigador da UNESCO, no âmbito do Projeto Latino-Americano de Reabilitação de Recintos Históricos. É ainda membro da Comissão Externa Permanente de Aconselhamento
Científico do Centro de História d’Aquém e d’Além-Mar (Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da NOVA).
Juan Marchena Fernández has a PhD in American History and is one of the world’s most renowned experts in this area. He is
Full Professor at Pablo de Olavide University, Spain, where he is also Director of the American History department and Director of
the Master and PhD Programmes in Latin-American History. UNESCO consultant and researcher within the framework of the Latin
American project to rehabilitate historic sites, he is also a member of the Permanent External Committee for Scientific Advice of the
Centro de História de Além-Mar (Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of NOVA).
Maurizio Cotta
Maurizio Cotta é um académico de reconhecido mérito e uma referência internacional na área disciplinar da Ciência Política. É de
destacar a importância da sua obra científica e dos projetos de investigação internacionais que dirigiu para o desenvolvimento
dos estudos políticos comparados, em particular sobre a transformação das elites (parlamentares e ministeriais) e a dinâmica
das instituições de governo nas democracias contemporâneas. Desde 1997 assume o cargo de Diretor do Centre for the
Study of Political Change, na Universidade de Siena. Presidiu, em 2007, ao painel internacional de avaliação de projetos de
investigação na área da Ciência Política submetidos à Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
Maurizio Cotta is an internationally recognized expert in the field of Political Science. His scientific works and international research
projects are central to the development of the field of comparative political studies, namely on the transformation of elites (parliamentary
and ministerial) and the dynamic of government institutions in modern democracies. He is, since 1997, Director of the Centre for the
Study of Political Change, at Siena University. In 2007, he presided the international evaluation panel for research projects in Political
Science submitted to the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
