House Swimming Gala 2010
Mr Moss
London take the swimming honours twice on the trot... by just six points!
A fine array of swimming talents and abilities were on show in an excellent and hot morning of
House representation and competition in the second solo Junior House Swimming Gala.
The Gala, such a prominent event in the school Sports calendar was well supported by an
impressive number of parents, family members, cameras, Infant/Junior staff and Senior
House representatives contributing to the many successes of the morning.
Over 140 pupils/swimmers from the Junior School in all years competed in 32 races that
included all the recognised stokes, an open house relay and a staff relay, London winning
again. Three records were broken: Ricard Thiegui Yr3 Front Crawl 19.82; Maarten Hagemen
Yr4 Front Crawl 18.98; Luiza Peres Yr5 Front Crawl 16.74. Impressive to say the least.
On behalf of the PE Department, thank you to all members of the St. Nicholas community
and the Head of Houses for their support, time and contribution before and during the
event. Congratulation to London and we look forward to The Senior House Swimming
Gala come April/May.

Last day to borrow items from the library
The last day to borrow books, DVDs, etc. from the Library was Friday December 3rd.
The materials must be returned by Friday December 10th.
The aim of our Visual Arts lessons is to give the pupils the opportunity to develop their
creativity, imagination and confidence. Through various projects, the pupils have had
the experience of using different Art tools and techniques.
This workshop is the result of Years 5 and 6 Visual Arts Lessons from August 2010 to
December 2010, where skills using the following media were developed: watercolours,
oil pastels, carving polystyrene and printing in Year 5, collage using magazines and
newspaper, posters (using different media), tape sculptures and recycling materials
(colour paper, cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, aluminium cans, newspaper, wood and
polystyrene) in Year 6.
Year 9 Life Skills Paraty 2010
Carina Uchida & Alex Park
Two weeks ago, the Year 9 group went
to Saco do Mamangua in Paraty for their
Life Skills trip. Everyone showed great
commitment and overcame their goals
whilst hiking, kayaking and working as a
team during cooking and cleaning.
On the first day, we departed early in the
morning for a five hour bus drive, and soon
as we got to Paraty-Mirim, we loaded our
bags to boats and we took off to an island
where we would be camping. The island
was a beautiful forest with high mountains.
We set our tents right in front of the crystal
clear ocean. On the same day, we set off
to climb the Pão de Açucar mountain,
it took us nearly two hours to get on top
and after lots of struggle and muscle pain
we reached our destination. After one
look at the amazing view of the sea with
small valleys, we all felt accomplished and
confident about our success. When the
night fell and we were already back at our
camp site, we took cold showers from a
tree and the cooking team made dinner.
We ate our spaghetti with a great attack of
mosquitos. Soon after, we went to sleep...
the next day was going to be a tiring day.
6:30am we were all getting ready for our
long hike over the mountain and ate our
breakfast. First we got in our kayaks with
pairs. We were going to another beach
before the hike by kayaks, after lots of
struggle to keep the kayaks going forwards,
we got to the beach and had some free
time before hiking. The hiking started
around 11am and this was the hardest
part of the day, as many struggled and
complained, we walked step by step until
we got to the other side of the mountain. It
took us nearly five hours but after taking a
look at the beautiful beach, we all knew it
was all worth it. We had some free time to
play at the beach and eat some food. Soon
after we got our boats to go back to our
camping site. Everyone was exhausted and
hungry so we started to make dinner which
was vegetarian Strogonoff with soy meat.
After dinner we took the cold shower again
and before going to sleep, we gathered
and talked about the hike and people
who stood out by their commitment and
cooperation. We also talked about how we
became more united as group and created
bonds which we would carry to school.
On the third and last day, after breakfast
the guides organized a game with kayaks
and water. The group that won the game
would win a pot of nutella, therefore
everyone was incredibly excited. Soon
after we packed our stuff and took it to
the boats, but before leaving we ate lunch.
Now it was time to go back to São Paulo
so we got in our boats and then in our bus
to another long bus drive of four hours.
This was our Life Skills Trip where we all
learnt something about commitment and
achieving your targets.

All of Year 7 and 8 participated in the first
round of the Spelling Bee which took
place in their English lessons. The English
teachers were very impressed with the
skill and dedication all students showed in
learning a range of difficult words.
The final took place in an assembly,
hosted by Calu Malta and Bontle Moatshe
from Year 9. Each participant showed
confidence and excellent spelling skills!
The three winning spellers were Anna
Falsztyn (London), Yoon Shu (Cambridge)
and the overall winner was Damasia
Correch from Oxford. Congratulations to
Damasia who proved herself to be the best
speller in Year 7 and 8!

Mr Cassiano Nogara
Sports
In the Creative Arts department (or MAD, as
we like to be called), we engaged with our
Y8 students in an exciting cross-curricular
project mixing Music, Arts and Drama to
produce a Lip Dub video for the song “I’ll
be there for you” by “The Rembrandts” (Do
you remember the opening of the TV show
“Friends”?). In lessons, our students had
to research how the videos were made and
take care of about everything related to the
production of their own!
During the term, they did a lot of
brainstorming and planning, but spent
most of their time in developing and
practising the sequence of the camera,
creating choreographies, music, costumes
and props. On November 27th, we spent
two hours recording the video in school.
St.Paul’s 0 v St. Nicholas 6
Danielle, Raunack and Ivan were our first
students to go to a recording session
outside school.
Our video is going to be exhibited on the
morning of the Christmas lunch, along
with a making of the project that is at the
moment being edited by Year 8 students. A
web version may be available soon. Don’t
miss our first MAD Lip Dub!
Mr Moss
Year 3 & 4 Football vs St.Paul's
St. Paul’s 2 v St.Nicholas 0
The most characteristic thing about a
Lip Dub is that it is filmed with only one
camera and in a single shot. It was a tiring
process because there were too many
people involved and every time someone
made a mistake we had to start over and
do it again. Now, consider that each of
our students had to appear at two to four
different moments doing different things
in the video, holding a banner, wearing a
different costume or accessories and you
will get a picture of how
difficult it is. It is
definitely a project

instead of using the
original recording of the
song,
we decided to record a cover version
of our own. We did takes of some of the
instruments in the music room and took
vocals and guitars to record in a studio.
Mr Moss
The Year 3 team, featuring many pupils
representing our school for the first
time, played with great enthusiasm and
teamwork in a very evenly contested game.
St.Nicholas , superbly led by captain Leo
Kachanovsky, were unlucky not to turn
some great passing and movement into
early goals but were helpless to stop a
great free kick late in the game which
sealed victory for St.Paul’s.
a great team performance. The match
was cut short by the threat of lightening,
but not before St.Nicholas had scored
six great goals from Lorenzo Bernardi,
Maarten Hageman, Damian Hofman, Leo
Kachanovsky and Nicolas Nascimento.
The Year 4 team played excellent football
and the St.Paul’s goalkeeper, his post and
crossbar were kept very busy throughout.
The organisation, communication and
leadership from captain Damian Kofman
and a couple of sweet volleys from
Maarten Hageman were the highlights of
Basketball
Four hard fought games that were punctuated by moments of brilliant offence, enjoyment,
co-operation, satisfaction, and missed opportunities.

U18 Boys St Nicholas 25 vs. St Paul’s 32; U18 Girls St Nicholas 25 vs. St Paul’s 17
The matches were largely relevant in the context of teamwork, spirit, performance and
attitude, playing against four quality St Paul teams. The performances demonstrated the
significant and important improvements with the Wednesday afternoon Basketball ECA’s.
Congratulations to all players!

internet. Nesses textos, eles discutiram se ela é realmente capaz de promover o encontro de verdadeiras amizades. Leia a seguir o
texto de Nicolas Gekker sobre o assunto.

Fernando Pessoa - Plural como o Universo
Ms Nogueria

Year 4 Trip to Campo dos Sonhos
Year 4 went on their first residential trip
to an environmentally friendly hotel called
Campo dos Sonhos. The unit they are
studying is called ‘What’s in the Bin’ and
has a focus on how our lifestyles have
an impact on the world’s resources. At
the hotel they were able to see how a
recycling centre works and its importance
to our environment. They also saw how a
real water wheel can produce energy and
they followed step-by –step how to make
coffee and organic fertilizers. They also
visited a plastic bottle factory to see how
the bottles are made and recycled.
During free time they enjoyed the swimming
pools, horse riding, paddling boats, riding
bikes, playing ping-pong, tiroleza and
feeding farm animals.
It was a fantastic experience for everyone
and the students have to be congratulated
on their behaviour and organisation. Their
rooms were ever so tidy. Well done, Year 4!
LAHC Conference to Mexico 2010
The Lancaster School
of Mexico City along
with the LAHC hosted
the
conference,
Opening Opportunities
Celebrating Diversity,
from October 14th to
16th in Mexico City.
The conference focused on inclusion and
learning. I would to share some ideas from
both of the key note presentations by Tony
Booth and Todd Rose.
Tony Booth, researcher and professor of
inclusive education at Canterbury Christ
University, views inclusion as ‘putting
values into action where everyone is
included rather than a concern for one
group of children’. Inclusion is not about
educating students with special needs
but educating all students. Indicators in
his publication The Index for Inclusion:
Developing Learning and Participation
in Schools promote reflection and
dialogue about inclusion within the school
community. Two examples of these
indicators are Is the school welcoming to
all children in its local communities? and
Do children learn what it means to be a
good citizen just by being at school? From
this dialogue, values of the community
are confirmed and challenged which can
lead to change. Values are essential to a
school community and should be lived and
Jeanne Bouvier
practised everyday within the community
and classroom by how teachers teach, how
students learn, as well as what teachers
teach and what the students learn.
Todd Rose, professor at the Harvard
Graduate School for Education and a
research scientist for the Center for Applied
Special Technology (CAST), believes that
perception, attention and working memory
interact to shape learning. Since these three
things vary for each student, it is important
that teachers follow the Universal Design
for Learning (UDL) to maximize learning
for all students. The UDL stresses the
importance of providing:
●● multiple and flexible methods of
presentation to give students with diverse
learning styles various ways of acquiring
information and knowledge.
Kenji Fuse
On Saturday 4th December Year 10,
Ms.Pare, Mr.Rodolffi, and Mr.McCombe
undertook a fieldtrip to Ibirapuera Park.
The group were split into three groups;
each group had its designated area to do
their own surveys and collect information.
The weather was incredibly hot and dry.
However, this didn’t stop us from doing
our job. In no particular order we had to
interview local residents, check how eroded
was the grass, count the litter around the
park and complete a table which asked us
about the environment. All this data would
provide evidence to see if Ibirapuera Park
is affected by humans or not. Each group
had to repeat this research in three different
sites in the groups' designated area. The
trip turned out to be very productive, and
we came back before the time expected.
●● multiple and flexible means of
expression to provide diverse students
with alternatives for demonstrating what
they have learned, and
●● multiple and flexible means of
engagement to tap into diverse learners'
interests, challenge them appropriately,
and motivate them to learn.

examples and lessons) can be found at

IB Andes Course - Lagunillas, Chile
In late October, Bruna Cunha and Anna Luiza Ruocco (Year 11) and Alexis Sogl and Ariel
Forner (Year 12) travelled to the Chilean Andes for an unforgettable experience. The
following reflections about the trip were written by Bruna and Anna Luiza.
In the first days the trip was harder than
we expected, since we walked a lot and
it wasn't easy to make friends because
people mostly spoke Spanish (there were
three other IB schools, from Argentina,
Uruguay and Chile). The stamina we had
to possess was huge and we were not
sure we would make it. However, as the
days went by, we got used to the trails
and started knowing people better, so
we completely fell in love with the place
and the trip. We didn't want to leave, no
matter how cold it was, how dirty we felt
and how tired we had become because we
realized that the cold didn't last long, the
dirt showed endurance and the tiredness
was easily forgotten.
fun people. It was WOW that we managed
to learn so much and come back fresh
after only one week. It is WOW that we
didn't have liquid water for three days and
managed to survive with newfound friends,
smiling and laughing at our own mistakes.
It is WOW that after all that went wrong, we
want to go back to all that went right and
have the same wrong experiences again.
We had to spend days without showers
and brushing teeth because we had no
liquid water, and we had to melt snow to
cook and clean. This made us see water
very differently than we used to, because
it is one thing hearing people tell you that
it is important and that people around
the world are dying of thirst, and another
thing actually being without water yourself
and having to deal with the difficulties this
brings. This trip opened our eyes to the
reality outside the St Nicholas bubble, and
it felt remarkable.
Another amazing experience was being
with sight-handicapped (blind and semiblind) teenagers in the mountains for a
day. We spent most of the morning and
afternoon showing them around and
talking about everything…But we will not
tell you anything else, so we won’t spoil
the absolute fun this was! It completely
changed our perspective of life to be
with blind people who ‘see’ a completely
different world...
Wow. Just... wow. Maybe that is the best
word to describe this trip. It is WOW that
we climbed up to one of the summits of the
Andes Mountain range. It is WOW that we
were lucky as to go on a trip with so many
IGCSE Fieldtrip Report
We were very lucky (yes, it was fun!) to
face a snowstorm in the mountains even
though it was spring. It was extremely
cold, but completely worth it as we woke
up to the mesmerising view of a white
landscape surrounding our tents. We felt
like we were in a movie and we even had
snowball fights!
Even after all the trouble we faced in this
trip, we came back feeling like new, thirsting
for life. We recommend this trip to everyone!
And it is not only because you also gain CAS
and TOK hours, but because it is the most
incredible experience anyone could have.
BM&F BOVESPA Trip Report
Mr Soukup
As part of the IB Business and Management
course, Year 11 and 12 students ventured
forth into the wild business environment of
São Paulo. They were met at the entrance
to the stock exchange by their hosts and
ushered into what was the trading floor
until last year. After the initial greetings the
hopeful leaders of industry were shown
a 3D video describing the stages of the
recent events leading up to the creation of
BM&FBOVESPA as it is today: the merging
of two organisations, the commodities and
futures market and the stock exchange.
It is the largest stock market in Latin
America and ranks tenth in the world. The
next item was a lecture that described
the various operations that take place in
BM&FBOVESPA including the investment
products that are available. Some of the Year
11’s found these technically complicated
as they are though they do provide plenty
of scope for further research. After a short
coffee break there were a number of short
videos showing how business developed in
São Paulo over the last hundred years and
the people associated with its progress.
This was followed by a buying and selling
of equities simulation that demonstrated
the ease with which these trades can now
be made. While a number of students
wanted to make a deal it seems they
had forgotten their cheque books! At the
end of the tour the group waited to see
the ‘quadrangle’ or ‘ticker board’ go into
action showing the change in share prices
as trades are made. Mostly a lot of green
numbers showing a move into positive
territory, BM&FBOVEASP does not start
trading until 11 am when Wall Street
opens for business. The expedition into
the financial jungle was completed from
the dizzy heights of the BANESPA building
that gives a 360° panoramic view of the
city from 35 floors up.

Fair Trade Visitors
For a whole week, the children celebrated one colour per day by coming to school
wearing specific clothes according to the colour chosen. They painted and mixed primary
colours and also made different shades using black and white. It was a busy week and
the parents were also involved. The children had loads of fun!
Year 5 are enjoying their unit on Fair Trade
and we invited two parents, Julie Gattaz
and Luciano Deos to speak to us about
their jobs in marketing.
