Editorial
In its sixth year, Festival Materiais
Diversos (FMD) is at its most
international, with a vibrant
programme of dance, theatre,
music, and parallel activities that
include workshops, conferences,
cinema, and DJs. In partnership with
the municipalities of Torres Novas,
Alcanena, and Cartaxo, and the
Government of Portugal through its
Secretary of State of Culture, FMD
continues to gain importance as a
national and international reference
point, a place to discover some of
the best work being produced today
in the performing arts.
The festival opens with a nod to the
Centenary of the municipality of
Alcanena – a performance created
by Cláudia Gaiolas and Rita Rio de
Sousa with workers from local
leather factories. Other national
proposals include work by
choreographers Clara Andermatt,
Cláudia Dias, Sofia Silva, Leonor
Keil&Francisco Campos, who
present their perspectives on
tradition, interpersonal relationships,
contemporaneity, and the passing of
time. In a performance for
Alcanena’s schools, Ângelo Cid
Neto and Sara Chéu present a
playful parody of identity. The
international performances, from
countries as diverse as Brazil,
France, Tunisia, Ecuador/Belgium,
and Morocco, make FMD\2014 a
pole of cultural activity. Marcelo
Evelin puts audience members faceto-face with performers in a ring;
Kevin Jean questions the laws of
gravity in an upside-down solo,
Fabián Barba stages an Expressionist
dance recital from the 1930s;
Bouchra Ouizguen and 3 Aïta
singers purge their obsessions in an
ode to madness; and Radhouane El
Meddeb tests our limits in an
acrobatic dance performance. The
programme for Friday and Saturday
night includes a surprising visual and
audio live act by Italian musician
Lorenzi Senni and an electronic
concert by lyrical rapper Capicua.
At the meeting point, DJs invite you
to take to the dance floor on Long
Nights, until the first rays of sunlight.
Other off stage events include
conferences about the cultural
development of the region and
dance history, a film about the work
of Mary Wigman, in partnership with
Cine-clube de Torres Novas, and
dance and theatre workshops open
to all. The Sunday community picnic
in Minde is also a moment of
reflection, guided by local arts
students who will be accompanying
all of the festival’s performances.
Ten days of effervescent activity
offer a view of the world through the
eyes of the invited artists, in
dialogue with the local community,
associations, and enthusiastic
participants. My thanks to everyone
who has accompanied us on this
journey, since the first festival.
Without your active involvement,
none of this would be possible.
Enjoy!

are living in Europe, the contradictions in the relationship
between North and South, coloniser and colonised, centre and periphery. Here and
now, the audience is confronted with the inevitability of a land that binds and implores
that we stay, watching time slip away. Each person must decide what path they will
follow, and how to unearth the willingness to find the there that is waiting up ahead.

Ha! displays an immense variety of traditions, researched while
travelling across Morocco, where Bouchra develops her
vocabulary and movement as she meets people. The brave, rhythmic, and melodic
voices of the Aïta singers (protagonists of Madame Plaza, 2011), oscillates between
shout and whimper. The quartet conjures and distils experiences ranging from hipthrusting sexuality to ghostly evocations of Sufism, toeing the fine line between beauty
and a kind of insanity.

Fábrica de Cultura - Minde
“Enjoy an iced tea in the late afternoon, by the shade of an old chimney; sip a
strawberry caipiroska in the moonlight; sink into a pouf when your feet are sore
from dancing; chat until your throat is dry; overcome your shyness to speak to an
artist. The Fábrica da Cultura is our cottage in the country, where the door is
always open to friends, where art and life walk hand-in-hand.”

We have invited young arts students from the region – many of whom have been
influenced by the festival and have themselves been influential audience members
since 2009 – to be part of the festival from beginning to end. From artistic
residencies, set-ups, rehearsals, and performances to master classes and discussion
forums led by Ana Pais, they will develop a critical eye on their own practices and
the professional field they hope to enter. A bellyful of performing arts!
Post-show Talks
Thunderous applause. The performers line up for the curtain call, glistening with
sweat. In the audience, bodies molded to the chairs rise slowly. Questions hang in
the air: What? Why? How? The festival director is joined on stage by an arts critic to
moderate an informal conversation between artists and audience. All questions and
provocations are welcome!
