cláudia gaiolas - Materiais Diversos
0 Editorial In its sixth year, Festival Materiais Diversos (FMD) is at its most international, with a vibrant programme of dance, theatre, music, and parallel activities that include workshops, conferences, cinema, and DJs. In partnership with the municipalities of Torres Novas, Alcanena, and Cartaxo, and the Government of Portugal through its Secretary of State of Culture, FMD continues to gain importance as a national and international reference point, a place to discover some of the best work being produced today in the performing arts. The festival opens with a nod to the Centenary of the municipality of Alcanena – a performance created by Cláudia Gaiolas and Rita Rio de Sousa with workers from local leather factories. Other national proposals include work by choreographers Clara Andermatt, Cláudia Dias, Sofia Silva, Leonor Keil&Francisco Campos, who present their perspectives on tradition, interpersonal relationships, contemporaneity, and the passing of time. In a performance for Alcanena’s schools, Ângelo Cid Neto and Sara Chéu present a playful parody of identity. The international performances, from countries as diverse as Brazil, France, Tunisia, Ecuador/Belgium, and Morocco, make FMD\2014 a pole of cultural activity. Marcelo Evelin puts audience members faceto-face with performers in a ring; Kevin Jean questions the laws of gravity in an upside-down solo, Fabián Barba stages an Expressionist dance recital from the 1930s; Bouchra Ouizguen and 3 Aïta singers purge their obsessions in an ode to madness; and Radhouane El Meddeb tests our limits in an acrobatic dance performance. The programme for Friday and Saturday night includes a surprising visual and audio live act by Italian musician Lorenzi Senni and an electronic concert by lyrical rapper Capicua. At the meeting point, DJs invite you to take to the dance floor on Long Nights, until the first rays of sunlight. Other off stage events include conferences about the cultural development of the region and dance history, a film about the work of Mary Wigman, in partnership with Cine-clube de Torres Novas, and dance and theatre workshops open to all. The Sunday community picnic in Minde is also a moment of reflection, guided by local arts students who will be accompanying all of the festival’s performances. Ten days of effervescent activity offer a view of the world through the eyes of the invited artists, in dialogue with the local community, associations, and enthusiastic participants. My thanks to everyone who has accompanied us on this journey, since the first festival. Without your active involvement, none of this would be possible. Enjoy!
