Giving some thought to the postage situation and the economy and not
wanting to take the newsletter hardcopy out of the hands of our families and
stakeholders, as long as funds are available, we will mail a copy every other
month (Jan, Mar, May, July, Sept, Nov). Every effort will be made to include
information to watch for the following month.
As in the past, each issue will be posted online as soon as it is completed and
information about special activities such as Achievement Night, Lock-In, Pool
Party, etc, will continue to be mailed to families. An email notice will be sent at the time the
newsletter is posted on the web. If you would like to have your name added to the volunteer/
parent list to receive information concerning 4-H, please call the Extension office.

Just Horsin’ Around 4-H Day Camp
The 2009 Just Horsin’ Around 4-H Day Camp will be held Wednesday, April 15 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Sampson County
Livestock Facility and is open to youth ages 9-19. Registration fee is $25 and must be postmarked by April 8. Make checks

Knowledge For College
Are you making plans to attend college in the fall either this year or in 2010? Do you know all the ins and
outs of living on your own? If you are interested in learning firsthand from a college senior, Kathleen
Dunnigan, ECU intern currently working with Extension, make plans to attend a FREE session for current
juniors, seniors and their parents, and students enrolled in a community college transferring to a four-year
college, April 22, 4:00 PM or April 28, 3:30 PM at the Extension office. If you have questions you would like
answered, submit them prior to the session to [email protected].
To register, either email Kathleen at the above address or call the Extension office. If you have family or
friends who might be interested, please share this information with them. This should prove to be a useful
informational session you won’t want to miss!
Centennial Committee
The next meeting is April 23 at 6:30 PM. The plans for the countywide celebration of 100 years of 4-H scheduled for June 6 at
Swinson Park, are well underway. Each club will be asked to help with specific activities. Please have a representative from your
club attend.
Application Resume Interview Workshop
Reminder for those ages 14-18 as of January 1: if you would like to sharpen your life skills by learning how to write your resume,
practice interview skills and possibly win a national trip, call the Extension office to register for the first countywide Application,
Resume and Interview workshop, April 27, 4:00 PM. Even if you do not wish to compete at the state level, this is an excellent
opportunity to begin preparing for your future. For more information checkout
www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/fourh/publications/forms/ARI/.
County Activity Day
Reminder: County Activity Day is May 19 at 6:30 PM. If you have never given a presentation, this is your year to take the plunge.
The top two in each category will advance to the district competition, June 26 at Ashley High School in New Hanover County. For
members in public school, this is a great opportunity to learn to speak in public and discover how to present your senior project that
is now a graduation requirement. Start early and see all the possibilities that wait for you through NC 4-H presentations. Call the
Extension office to schedule a workshop for your club.
Career Poster Competition
Any 4-H’er entering the Career Exploration Poster competition will need to submit their poster to me by May
27. Please make sure you read the rules and only include ORIGINAL artwork and NOT pictures cut out of
magazines, etc. Check our website for contest details and complete the entry form, attaching it to the back
of your poster.
th
Citizenship Focus
The 5 Annual 4-H Citizenship NC Focus is scheduled for June 15-17 in Raleigh and is open to 4-H’ers
between the ages of 14-19 and adult volunteers. Each county may select two youth to attend. The goal is to
encourage development of expanded leadership and citizenship, promote an increased understanding of North Carolina’s state
government, develop marketing and public relation skills as vocal, positive advocates for NC 4-H and plan and implement a
personal citizenship initiative in the county. The registration is $150 per person and includes two nights lodging and meals during
the conference. Applications are due in the state 4-H office by May 1. For more information or an application, contact the Extension
office.

Summer 4 - H C amp at BJP
Are you between the ages of 8-14 and looking for something that is fun, educational and provides the possibility for you to make
life-time friends this summer? Make plans to travel with Carteret County to Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Camp near Reidsville, July 5-10.
The best part? This year, thanks to Carteret County Farm Bureau for providing funds for transportation, the cost is reduced by
more than $100. For traditional campers the fee is $330 and for those interested in the higher adventure Trekker program, $350.
This is an all-inclusive price and covers transportation, insurance, camp fees and material, t-shirt, $15 camp store allowance and
lunch Friday.
4 - H International Exchange Program
There is still time to sign-up for a rare opportunity to learn the culture of another country by hosting an exchange student from
Japan, Finland, Norway or Costa Rica, July 24-August 20. The 4-H International Exchange program is fully accredited and
looking for families to host students either during the month-long summer program or commit to a yearlong experience. Call the
Extension office today or to learn more, go to www.nc4h.org/professionals/exchange/index.html. You will not regret taking part in
this unique experience.
Take Off 4 - Health Summer Camp
Take Off 4-Health summer camp is a specialized residential camp for overweight youth ages 12-18 that will be held at the Eastern
4-H Center from July 26 – August 14. The goals of the camp are for campers to lose weight, build self-esteem and learn
strategies to lead a healthy life. The camp is sponsored by ECU and NC 4-H/NCSU with support from the ECU Brody School of
Medicine. For more information, go to www.eastern4hcenter.org.
Club Reports
RIVER RIDERS – On March 7 our horse bowl team was able to go to the State competition. The team included: Cayla
Walker; Tessa Walker; Juli Nicewarner; Cierra Tomaso; and Katy Lang. Our first round went very well, ending in a 5-1
win. We didn’t win our second round, but the experience was great, and we improved form our last year. Hopefully, we
will do even better next year!

CRYSTAL CLOVERS - Congratulations to the Crystal Clovers for turning in the most project record books! Way to go
with
over 100% participation. Ms. Michelle Shanton taught the group some interesting local history during our
meeting, March 11. After being separated into groups of two, we found important and interesting landmarks
and buildings throughout the community on a local map. Thanks, Ms. Michelle! It was an awesome
program. The Crystal Clovers 4-H club is no longer exclusively a home school 4-H club. We will meet from
4-6:00 in room 320 on the third floor of the CMAST building the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
The Crystal Clovers Club is gradually growing in size, as we recently gained two new members, Paul and
Gray Hintz. It was great having these new members and we look forward to having you back. The new
officers are doing amazing with their responsibilities and have showed outstanding leadership. Great job guys!!!

REMINDERS FROM LAST MONTH
4-H Horticulture Weekend
The weekend of April 25 & 26 will be brimming with hands-on
workshops, speakers and field trips, with an emphasis on the
state 4-H Horticulture Contest. Youth ages 8-19 and their
parents are invited and encouraged to attend, even if you are
not interested in the contest. The program will take place on the
campus of NC State, primarily in the Kilgore Hall. Lodging will
be at the Fairfield Inn & Suites near Crabtree Mall. Lodging and
registration will be completed at the same time. A $50

Master Gardener Volunteer Association
Scholarship
The Carteret County Master Gardener Volunteer Association
(CCMGVA) recognizes both the potential of selected students to
contribute to the promotion of gardening in Carteret County and
the value of higher education to these students. CCMGVA is
pleased to provide one scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
The application for the scholarship is on the 4-H page of the
Extension website www.carteret.ces.ncsu.edu or you may

What an incredible evening the 2009 Achievement Night turned out to be. With the donation of chicken from Hardees and the
Thompson’s, tea from Smithfield’s and all the hours that members and volunteers contributed to making this night a success, I
cannot thank everyone enough. County Commissioner Wade Nelms had nothing but positive comments to say about 4-H during
and after the event, and the impact that we are able to have on the lives of youth. This is one of our biggest nights of the year and
it is always satisfying to hear ‘a job well-done’ from our stakeholders. This is all possible because of everyone’s dedication, the
work of the County Council officers, adult volunteers, Melissa and Cindy’s behind the scene work and each parent for supporting
their child in 4-H.
As we begin the process for planning summer programs, we continue to look for new experiences that will provide ‘hands-on’
learning and most importantly, the opportunity to gain knowledge while having fun at an affordable price. As soon as the schedule
is posted online by May 1, an email will be sent to let everyone know what is available.
Until next month, thank you for supporting Carteret County 4-H.
