LINES FROM THLPS Issue 23 30th March 2012 available on line www.thlps.co.uk EDITORIAL French Trip The last two days in school have been very quiet; 36 of our Years 4, 5 and 6 children have gone off to Forge les Eaux, near Amiens in France with five members of staff. Whilst in France they will be visiting local sights, taking a train journey to Rouen, visiting a tree top rope assault course and spending a day in a French school. Children in Rec to Year 3 are relatively unaffected by the trip, but children in Years 4, 5 and 6 have carried out some project work and additional extension activities in addition to some normal lessons. PTA EYFS Garden Morning Thank you to the parents and particularly to Mr Meo and his team for all the hard work in the EYFS garden last Saturday. Summer Uniform May I remind you that summer uniform criteria apply after the Easter holiday. Girls should wear the summer uniform dress and boys in Rec, Y1 and Y2 should wear short trousers. Short trousers for boys are optional in KS2. Summer uniform should continue to be worn through till October half term holiday. Summer Activities Activities start on the first day of term and a new list is attached to this copy of Lines. For the first week, Canoeing Activity will be based at school, so that I can talk to the children about the routine for the rest of term and cover safety issues. I will issue a letter to parents at that point so that you know exactly what is happening. For the first week, parents should pick up their children from school at 4.40pm. Golf will be operating from Sprowston Golf Club on Monday 23 rd April and parents should pick up from there at 5.00pm. Drop Off You will know that our car parking facilities are limited. Please try to ‘drop off’ and free up a space as quickly as possible. New Year 2 Display Year 2 children and their parents have produced some more wonderful project work on ‘our wonderful world’. Parents may see the projects on display in our waiting room. Provisional Term List There are no school trips during the first week of summer term. The Provisional term list will be sent out with the next issue of Lines. May I wish you all a very peaceful and restful holiday. Mr Simon Marfleet THLPS Brownies Brownies would like to remind everyone that at 8.30pm on Saturday 31st March, it is ‘Earth Hour’. Please help to save the planet and raise awareness by switching off your electricity and encouraging your friends to do it too! Mrs Carin Pratt 7 Yarmouth Road Norwich NR7 0EA Tel: 01603 433055 Absence Report: 01603 436986 email: [email protected] CONGRATULATIONS Well done to the following children who received badges in today’s assembly: GOOD WORK/MERIT BADGES CORE VALUE BADGES Rec Cara, Berrienna, Jemima, Lex Y1 Eleanor, Daniel, Mia Y2 Keiron, Charlotte, John, Tilly Nathan, Sophie Y3 Isabelle, Joshar, Flynn Y4 Ben G, Harvey Y5 Matthew, Joseph Y6 Daisy Jake, Eleanor George Eleanor Renata, Lilian Ryan, Ross Riordan Daisy, Jordan Strangers Hall 5SC enjoyed an action packed history day at Strangers Hall last week. Children learnt Tudor dances, how to weave, identify artefacts from the period and they even had the chance to dress in Tudor clothes. Many children preferred to wear the clothes of poor people as they were less complicated and more comfortable. Laying the table for a Tudor feast was probably the favourite of most of the children as ‘Mayor Sotherton’ educated us on the types of food rich people enjoyed. We learnt of the different delicacies such as ‘sucking (through the beak) of birds’ brains’ and that only the meat from large pork pies was eaten, as the pastry crust was for the cook and servants or for the poor of Norwich. Children were surprised that forks were not used but guests at the feast would bring their own knives and the host would provide spoons. A great educational day. Ms Sue Cole Bake & Make Club As the tradition goes in Bake & Make club, we finished the term with a bake off. Our celebrity judge was the very strict Mrs Lund, who decided the winner was Isobelle B’s wonderful Easter bunny. A big thank you to all the Bake & Make team for all your hard work in sponsoring Percy & Eunice, our children in Ghana. Mr Bobby SOFA’s mascot Mr Bobby is thoroughly enjoying his visits to school on Wednesdays! He patiently listens to many children read, from various classes, who visit him in the library. Children seem to look forward to Wednesdays and his calming influence; children who are a little nervous of dogs are gaining confidence and enjoy walking with him, even if he is bigger than some of them! One of Mr Bobby’s biggest fans is Jake who is now helping Bobby with the writing of his blog, on SOFA’s website. GARDENING CLUB Everything is 'taking off' in the garden and the gardeners are working hard planting, weeding and watering! Our polytunnel is proving to be a wonderful asset to the garden and a number of us will be working on the garden over the Easter break. Gardeners will soon be reporting to Nursery and all classes with the aim of involving everyone in some 'growing' this year! Ms Sue Cole Mrs Sue Cole Children - Looking for something to read over Easter? Try: The Emerald Atlas by John Stevens I Corriander by Sally Gardner The Artist who painted a blue horse by Eric Carle Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon SPORTS NEWS SUMMER GAMES KIT REMINDER All children will need shorts, polo shirts, white socks, trainers and indoor plimsoles for summer games lessons. They will all be doing athletics, rounders and cricket in preparation for sports day and fixtures. HOUSE HOCKEY RESULTS U9 Our Year 3 & 4 children enjoyed house hockey on our tennis courts in the sun on Tuesday. Top goal scorers were Jake R, Ross B and Ben G with 3 goals each. NURSERY NEWS Nursery staff want to wish you all an enjoyable Easter break. We look forward to seeing several of you in holiday playscheme, don’t forget to supply your child with a packed lunch (no nuts or chocolate please). We have ended another very successful term with two outings. Lower Nursery had an enjoyable trip to Linda’s house on the outskirts of Norwich. The children hunted for eggs in the woods and then had a picnic outside. Everyone had a great time - many thanks to Linda. Upper Nursery visited Norwich Castle and were given a tour by ‘Matilda’, who was dressed in a costume of a servant girl. The behaviour of the children was impeccable. The trip concluded with a fantastic picnic (thank you Sue) in the Castle gardens. I realise that not all the children were given the opportunity to attend. Our aim is to organise trips on different days, so by the end of the school year everybody is able to go on at least one. I am sure by now you will have seen the wonderful development in our outside area. Mr Meo and his team led a group of very able volunteers. Many thanks to them and also our PTA for supporting this venture. We are also grateful to those of you who donated lavender and rosemary bushes. Seeds and plants of any description would be put to good use, if you could bring them in after the Easter holiday please. Mrs Ruth Belson EYFS Activity Afternoon U11 Our year 5 & 6 children played their house hockey at Langley School on the astro turf on Wednesday. The results Pine v Willow v Pine v Holly v Pine v Holly v were: Holly Beech Willow Beech Beech Willow 2 0 1 3 1 0 - 1 0 1 0 0 1 Pine were the winners. Players of the tournament: Oscar & Joshua B Overall our house hockey winners were PINE. Well done to all the children, our hockey is really improving well. Mrs Marie Hood The EYFS Easter Activity afternoon proved to be very successful. We began with a repertoire of spring poems and songs in the hall. The parents then accompanied their children back to the EYFS rooms and outside area for a range of Easter activities. These included hat making, face painting, nest making and egg rolling! Refreshments were served outside and everyone enjoyed the super sunny weather. Mrs Elizabeth St Quintin We have had a wonderfully musical spring term this year, with lots of different musical events happening from January through to March. The term started with the first Thursday back being Didgeridoo Day! Steve Arber (a professional Didgeridoo player) taught all the children from Reception to Year 6 how to play the Didgeridoo. It was a really fun and educational day; and every child even got their own Didgeridoo! Year Six children took part in a Djembe (African drum) workshop at the beginning of March. The children worked really hard for two hours to compose a complicated drumming piece and even got it up to performance standard. The workshop was a great success with all the children composing, playing and appraising to a very high level. You will be able to see the full performance at the Key Stage 2 Summer concert. The school was then fully involved with the Norfolk County Music Festival. Veronica Wilson entered James (Y1) and Sophie (Y2) into piano competitions and both children received Highly Commended, an excellent result. The school Community Choir took part in the festival for the first time, and sang for a good sized audience at the United Reformed Church. The choir sang to an amazingly high standard, even though this was only their second ever performance. The adjudicator was brimming with praise for the choir. Well deserved. VOICES took part in the festival at St. Andrew’s Hall, a fantastic performance area, which was quite daunting for our choir of 22. The children performed incredibly well and achieved a Highly Commended mark. They were the smallest choir but definitely held their own with their excellent ability to watch all instructions from their conductor! The musical term ended last Friday with the 1st ever THLPS Mass Choir event. Hillside Avenue and The Old School Henstead schools came to join VOICES to produce a really lovely concert in our school hall. Each school sang two songs, soloists sang (including our own Safia) and all the schools came together in a fantastic end to the concert singing ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘We go together’ from Grease. The choirs made a powerful yet beautiful sound together. Next year’s event will hopefully be even bigger. There have been some wonderful performances from instrumentalists in assemblies and well done those children who have taken Associated Board exams this term. Some superb music making, WELL DONE everyone who has taken part in all the musical events this term.
