Trilok Gurtu from India has several times been considered as the best
percussionist in the world by the Down Beat magazine. With background in tabla
and traditional Indian music, his positioning allowed him to work with some
renowned musicians. As a band member of the trumpeter Don Cherry, Gurtu
has worked with major legends such as jazz guitarist Philip Catherine, John
McLaughlin, Ralph Towner, Pat Metheny and Larry Coryell, rock guitarist David
Gilmore, saxophonists Jan Garbarek and Bill Evans, percussionist Nana
Vasconcelos, jazz keyboardist Josef Zawinul or classical pianists Katia and
Marielle Labeque. From 1984 to 1988, Gurtu was also a member of the
renowned jazz group Oregon. Moreover, born and raised in Bombay, Gurtu was
brought up in an environment of great musical culture: his father played the
zither and his mother, Shobha Gurtu, was an influential Indian classical music
singer. By bringing together the characteristic improvisation of jazz, the lexicon
of traditional songs and the results of this junction, in his new album,
Spellbound, Gurtu recalls that jazz is still the basis of his work and undertakes to
build a cultural bridge between Europe and India, presenting his barrier–free
vision of world music.
