From the Principal
Dear St John’s Regional College Community,
Welcome to the 2014 School Year!
I hope you had a restful and enjoyable holiday, and I offer a warm welcome to all members of St John’s Regional
College community. 2014 will hold a number of challenges and I am sure it will be a very successful year for us all.
A special welcome is extended all those new to St John’s Regional College, our Year 7 students and also the many
new students in Years 8 -12 who have transferred to us from other schools.
Positive comments have already been made in relation to the manner in which our students have begun the
2014 school year. I trust that all students will maintain the positive attitude, appropriate appearance and
readiness to work, that they have displayed in the first days of 2014 throughout the whole year.
As we often mention at assemblies, House meetings and in home room, St John’s is about developing
relationships and I remind all families of the ongoing invitation to keep in touch with the College. Home Room
Teachers and House Coordinators are the initial points of contact for all parents.
College Theme 2014: Follow Me
The College theme for 2014 is Follow Me. It is inspired by
the Gospel of Matthew, the gospel that will be proclaimed
most Sundays throughout this year. Matthew’s Gospel
provides us with an ethical guide for how to be in harmony
with God, with one another and with ourselves. This phrase
encompasses an invitation to be part of a journey, to answer a call to discipleship.
The Gospel of Matthew 4:18-22 includes the following passage "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men". This
call to discipleship is found in all Gospels, and in all accounts there is a radical commitment on the part of these
followers, a belief, trust and hope that is immediate and
total. The fishermen Jesus calls in this passage leave everything behind; their nets, their boats, their families, without
knowing what is being fully asked of them.
This year provides a renewed opportunity for all of us to accept this invitation to be followers of Jesus, to be part
of the journey and to challenge ourselves for the year ahead.
College Newsletters in 2014
The College Newsletter will be available each fortnight and parents can subscribe to receive it electronically via
the College Website. I urge all parents to use this facility to keep up to date of the many events and activities that
occur throughout the year.
If parents do not have the facility to access the website, please alert the College and we will ensure a paper copy
of the Newsletter is available to you.

Warm Weather
On days of extremely warm weather, teachers encourage the students to
increase their intake of water, to carry a water bottle at all times, to remain in
the shaded areas during the breaks and to keep movement to a minimum.
I offer a reminder to parents of the dangers of exposure to ultra-violet light.
All students are strongly encouraged to wear a hat, sunglasses and
sunscreen, as well as being advised to keep to shaded areas during the recess
and lunch breaks.
Information Nights
On Tuesday 4 February an Information Night for our Year 7 students and their parents was held at the College.
Important information regarding Expectations and Procedures at St John’s and the Year 7 Camp was discussed, as
well as distribution of an iPad to each student. Details of how to load eBooks was also provided.
The introduction of the iPads is a significant change to the face of education here at St John’s. It is not just simply
championing the new technology, but recognising and celebrating a new way of teaching and learning. We are
mindful that information itself is not knowledge and our focus has been upon examining our teaching and
learning practices and the impact that changes in our practice have upon our students’ learning outcomes.
2015 Enrolments
Enrolments for Year 7 2015 are currently open. An Information Night for parents considering St John’s is to be
held on Monday evening 10 February at 7.30pm, in the College Lecture Theatre. Enrolment forms are available at
the College, from all feeder Primary Schools and Parish Offices.
Once the Application Form has been completed it is to be returned to the College, with the Enrolment
Application fee of $50.
The closing date for Enrolment Forms is Friday 28 February.
Opening College Eucharist
Our Opening College Eucharist will be held during the school day
on Thursday 20 February at 9.30am.
Parents who are able to join us are most welcome.
Yours sincerely,

College Captains 2014
At the Opening College Assembly on Tuesday each of our College Captains offered words of wisdom,
encouragement and hope to their fellow students. Carla and Ife’s speeches follow.
Today is the beginning of the St John's journey for some and the
ginning of the end of that same journey for others.
be-
I would firstly like to welcome our new Year 7s, as well as the new students
in other year levels, who have become a part of the St John's community
this year. Today, your journey begins as a member of the St John's family. I
know that this new start may seem daunting to you at the moment, but
trust me when I say that you are all in good hands here at the College.
I remember when I first started at St John's, I was not an "original", as some
may say. I arrived in Year 9 and had no idea what to expect, but my worries
were quickly dispelled as I was embraced into this family. I know that each
and every one of you will be embraced in this very same way, and feel as
though you are a crucial member of the family. Because you are.
The Lasallian Youth Ministry theme for this year is to "be an act of hope".
This means that as young Lasallians, we should aim to be an act of hope
whenever and however possible. You can be an act of hope by giving back
to the community at large, being kind to your peers, helping your friends
or teachers out, or helping a new student find their way around the
school. Even offering someone a smile and having a simple conversation with them can be acts of hope. I believe
that this year, through both our Lasallian and College themes, we will be able to follow in the footsteps of those who
inspire us and help those in need by being acts of hope.
To my Year 12 cohort, these coming months will definitely put us to the test. We will have to make many choices
about our futures. We need to remember that all our hard work and dedication has culminated in this, our final year.
We are beginning our first steps as adults in the world. I believe that our time at St John's has given us the steadiest
foundation of values and resources one could ask for.
We must not squander these gifts that have been given to us, instead we should use them to our advantage. Ask
your teachers for help, talk to your peers about your worries - which they will no doubt share - lean on your family in
times of stress. Remember that with all of these things, we will get through this final hurdle together and make it a
year to remember.
Carla Munoz, College Captain 2014
“I know that each and every one of you will be embraced in
this very same way, and feel as though you are a crucial member
of the family. Because you are.”

4 2 Faith - Learning - Integrity - Service - Community
Today marks the beginning of the end for some of us. Today is also a day
of many firsts and lasts. For the Year 7 students this is their first ever
Opening College Assembly, whilst for the Year 12 students this is their
last.
As many of you know our college themes change yearly. The themes of
previous years have been around individuality and making a difference
with examples being the themes of “Let Your Light Shine” and “Making a
Difference.
However our college theme for this year is one of “Follow Me”.
Although they seem worlds apart both current and previous themes have
common similarities. Their common similarities include setting an
example and being the light in the darkness. Now some of you may be
thinking what is the theme of “follow me” about? What does it mean?
Firstly it is the invitation from Jesus to follow Him … His teaching and His
lead. And we will reflect on this and talk about this in our RE classes. But
there are other ways to think about this theme too.
One way I think about it is the challenge for us to be the change that we want to see in others. For us, as
individuals, to make a real difference in the world. However big or small the act may seem we must first look at
ourselves, and only then can a change be made.
Being a leader and letting others follow in your footsteps is a noble goal. But we must remember all at St Johns,
students and teachers alike, are leaders. Not having a shiny badge or a fancy title to your name does not make you
less of a leader than the others. No matter our position whether it be at school or in the wider community we must
act as a compass for others and improve our local community one good act at a time.
During the summer holidays my fellow captains and I were sent to the Lasallian Student Leadership Seminar in
Collaroy, Sydney, where we were taught not only how to lead but also how to be led. During those fantastic 5 days
we learnt plenty about leadership. One of those things was that leaders take form in all shapes and sizes. Take St
John Baptist De La Salle, the founder of the De La Salle Brothers. Born into a wealthy family, he heard the calling
from God to be a leader of men and so gave up his possessions. And through his actions and selflessness schools
were formed, in which even the poorest of students were given a good education.
Another lesson we learnt from the seminar was to inspire you must perspire. Inspiration does exist but first it must
find you working at it. Sometimes we may not realise it but even the little things we do for others can go a long
way.
The road to being a leader and being followed is often a long and difficult one and delayed gratification is common
place but the reward at the end of the journey is always a satisfying one.
Ife Tokun, College Captain 2014
“Not having a shiny badge or a fancy title to your name does not make
you less of a leader than the others. No matter our position whether it be at
school or in the wider community we must act as a compass for others
and improve our local community one good act at a time.”
5
5 3 Education in Faith
This year the College theme is Follow Me. It is an
invitation to follow Jesus in our everyday lives; in
the choices we make and the values we choose to
govern our lives. If we accept the invitation to
follow Jesus then we will be creating a world
characterised by peace and joy, compassion and
care, justice and love.
To help us to respond to the call to Follow Me we
pray that we will see the goodness and dignity in
ourselves and each other, knowing that God loves
and cares for each one of us individually.
Let us take some time now to listen to God’s love for each one of us through the words of the psalmist:
Psalm 139
8
O LORD, you have searched me and known me.
2
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you know my thoughts from far away.
3
You search out my path and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways.
4
Even before a word is on my tongue,
O LORD, you know it completely.
5
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
6
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is so high that I cannot attain it.
Psalm 139:1-6
Let us place before God our prayer:
God of all, as the year fills with activities, challenges and difficulties,
may we show your unending love here at St John’s Regional College
by responding to the call to Follow Me. Amen.

Student Wellbeing
Rights & Responsibilities
Our College community seeks to create an environment where students feel safe,
comfortable and confident to achieve their best; where students are encouraged to
grow to their full potential. In an atmosphere of mutual respect and acceptance, we
foster each person's sense of self-esteem, as well as an appreciation of the dignity of
others.
Just as we all have a right to respect, so too do we have a responsibility to allow others to enjoy the same right.
The start of our school year is an appropriate time to focus our attention on these
rights and responsibilities.
In Homeroom, students have read through with their Homeroom teacher the document, Respect: Rights and Responsibilities. We have discussed the meaning and intention of this document, and we have asked for all students and parents
to sign this document, and to commit to upholding its spirit.
Respect: Rights and Responsibilities (included on the follow pages) is a clear statement of who we are and how we will
build positive relationships here at St John’s Regional College, and we ask all families to become very familiar with it.
Stephen Bourbon, Deputy Principal - Students
7
7 3 Respect: Rights and Responsibilities
In realising their individual potential, students will be encouraged to develop a
sense of responsibility for their own learning. Students at St John's Regional College
will strive for self-worth and respect for others, will act justly, will confront
social issues and contribute to community life.
St John’s Regional College Mission Statement
As a student of St John's Regional College, Dandenong, I respect the rights of everyone in our College community to
feel safe, comfortable and confident to achieve their best.
As a student of St John’s Regional College, Dandenong, my right to feel safe, comfortable and confident to achieve my
best is respected by everyone in our College community.
I commit myself to ensuring that through my actions and words, St John’s is a safe school environment for all members
of the College community. For my part, I will respect the dignity and rights of each member of the College community
by:

contributing to a community where all students and staff have the right to feel safe and secure;
abiding by the College Anti-Harassment and Anti-Discrimination Policy;
accepting responsibility for my own actions and decisions;
extending courtesy and respect to all;
doing my best to learn in all tasks;
respecting the right of the teacher to teach and the rights of others to learn;
promoting the good reputation of the College;
keeping the school clean and safe; and
respecting my own and others' property.
When forming respectful relationships in our College community, I have 3 key areas of responsibility.
1. RESPONSIBILITY TO MYSELF
Working hard to achieve my best in all my school endeavours
I have the right to a Catholic education which allows me to achieve to my full potential. I will take responsibility for my learning, by involving myself fully in the learning activities and opportunities provided in my
classes. I will use appropriate ways to listen, question, discuss, and complete work tasks to the best of my
ability. I will contribute to maintaining a safe, accepting and productive classroom environment
I accept homework as my responsibility and will submit all set work by the due date. I commit to ensuring
that all work I submit is my own, and that I will acknowledge all sources of information I have used, in the
appropriate way.
Accepting responsibility for my own actions and decisions
I will follow all class and school rules, in particular respecting the rights of others and accepting my responsibilities to myself and my community, and the College’s Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy. I
commit myself to respecting the right of all school community members to feel safe at school and free from

bullying, discrimination and harassment. I will accept responsibility for the consequences of my actions
and decisions, and I understand that if I break school rules or community laws, there will be an appropriate response.
2. RESPONSIBILITY TO MY COMMUNITY
I understand that I have the following responsibilities to the St John’s Regional College community.
Contributing to an environment where all Students and Staff have the right to feel safe and secure
To feel safe and secure means that no person in the St John's community should experience physical,
verbal or electronic abuse, eg: bullying, teasing, name calling, sexist or racist comments. It is my responsibility to treat others with dignity, and to move around the school in a safe and orderly manner.
I understand that bullying is not tolerated in my school, and I will not tolerate bullying happening to others; I will speak to an adult if I am aware of bullying happening to another person.
Social media and online life
My choices, communication and action online can have impact in other areas of my life, and can seriously affect other people in my community. When in the digital world, if I think critically, behave safely
and participate responsibly I will respect my community and myself. I will also remain aware of my responsibilities under the College iPad programme, the College Acceptable Use of Technology policy, and
laws relating to harassment.
Extending courtesy and respect to all
I expect to be treated with courtesy, respect and politeness. I too, will be polite to fellow students, to
staff and the wider community.
Respecting the right of the teacher to teach and the rights of others to learn
I will follow all directions given by the teacher in class, and be organised for each lesson. I will come to all
classes punctually with the necessary books and equipment.
Enhancing the reputation of the College
I owe it to each member of the community to uphold the good name of the College at all times. I am
aware that when I represent St John's Regional College, I will act and speak to bring credit to the College.
It is my responsibility to wear the College Uniform with pride.
3. RESPONSIBILITY TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND COLLEGE PROPERTY
Keeping my school clean and safe
I accept my responsibility to care for the buildings, their contents, all school property and to maintain a
neat, clean environment. I will not interfere with or damage college property
Respecting my own and others' property
It is my right to expect that other students will respect my property, and it is my responsibility to respect
the property of other students. I will not interfere with or damage the property of others.

Staff Retirement
At the end of 2013 the College Community farewelled Mrs Anne Hibbert who retired after 5 years
of service. Mrs Hibbert, who joined the library staff in 2009 imbued in students and staff a love of
reading, particularly fiction. The library came alive with her wonderful, colourful displays and
creative flair. She organised quizzes and competitions, particularly in book week, which were
enjoyed by students and staff alike. She provided insight into staff members’ reading habits
through her popular displays of “Reader of the Month”.
Her long career and experience as a teacher has been a great asset to the St John’s Community.
We thank Mrs Hibbert for her dedication to St John’s and wish her well in her retirement.

Alumni News
Bobsledding Alumnus
St John’s Regional College graduate, Heath
Spence (pictured far left with his team
mates arriving in Sochi) will represent
Australia at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Heath graduated from St John’s in 1997,
starring as Max Detweiler in the College
production of the Sound of Music in his
Senior year.
He began competing in Bobsleigh in 2008
and will make his Olympic debut at this
year’s Winter Olympics.
In his quest to make the Olympic team, 33 year old Heath moved to
Calgary, Canada so he could focus completely on his training. He was
officially named pilot of the 2-Man and 4-Man bobsled teams in late
January.
Heath will take to the ice at the Sochi Winter Olympics this month
along with Lucas Pacha Mata, Duncan Harvey and Gareth Chev
Chelios Nichols. Heath has set himself the goal of making the Top 10
in Sochi.
Congratulations to Heath and his team mates. The bobsleigh events
kick off on 16 February and we will all be watching.
Basketball Success
Anthony Drmic was a student at St John’s from 2004 to 2007. In October 2007 he left St
John’s after being accepted to the AIS for Basketball. Anthony was mirroring his older
brother, Frank who attended the AIS for basketball from 1994-95.
It was reported recently that Anthony has just become the 23rd player for Boise State
University to score 1000 points. This is a benchmark figure in American College Basketball.
He has become one of the leading players for the Boise Broncos as they head towards the
NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), final basketball tournament in March.
We congratulate Anthony on his success so far and wish him well in the March Madness
tournament next month. This tournament may provide him with the possibility of being
chosen to play in the NBA in the future.
