SMIT Brasil (REBRAS - Rebocadores do Brasil SA) is the fully-owned Brazilian towage company of
the Boskalis Group, a leading global dredging and marine expert. Boskalis acquired SMIT in 2010.
With a fleet of 27 new tugs, all highly manoeuvrable azimuthal stern-drive (ASD) and powerful
with 50-70 tons bollard pull (TBP), SMIT Brasil started operations in Brazil in 2008 and is now
active in seven ports and terminals:
• Santos: 3 ASD tugs of 50 TBP & 1 ASD of 60 TBP;
• Paranaguá: 2 ASD tugs of 50 TBP;
• Sepetiba - Itaguaí: 3 ASD tugs of 50 TBP;
• Sepetiba - Angra dos Reis: 4 ASD tugs of 50 TBP dedicated in the Petrobras oil terminal;
• Vitória (Tubarão, Praia Mole): 2 ASD tugs of 53 TBP;
• São Luis (Ponta da Madeira, Itaqui & Alumar): 4 ASD tugs of 70 TBP & 1 ASD of 60 TBP;
• Rio Grande: 2 ASD tugs of 70 TBP;
• Suape: 2 ASD tugs of 50 TBP;
• Bare Boat Charter-Out: 3 ASD tugs of 52 TBP are bare-boat chartered out in Brazil.
SMIT Brasil constructed 18 new ASD tug boats in the Detroit Brasil shipyard with delivery in
December 2007 – October 2009. Twelve ASD tugs of Robert Allan RA2500 design with 50 TBP and
six ASD tugs of RA3000 design with 70 TBP.
In April 2011 SMIT Brasil started construction of another 6 ASD tugs of the same RA2500 design
and 50 TBP with the Keppel Singmarine Brasil shipyard. The first tug was delivered in June 2013
followed by another tug every 4 months.
On the back if this new construction SMIT Brasil imported 4 frontrunner ASD tugs of 53-60 TBP to
immediately complement our fleet where necessary and accelerate our second phase expansion.
Early 2015, 7 years from the start of operations, SMIT Brasil will operate in 10 of the main
Brazilian ports and terminals with at least 30 ASD tugs, 250 crew and 90 staff.
All Brazilian tugs are a combination of proven international technology, design, standardization,
and Brazilian construction, financing (Fundo Marinha Mercante / BNDES / BB), flag, and crew.

SMIT Brasil only recruits and develops Brazilian Captains, Chief Engineers, and Mariners. We
continuously provide courses, train and audit our crews ‘on-the-job’ in SMIT’s international modern
towage techniques while applying the same quality & safety as in ports like Rotterdam, Antwerp,
Singapore, Panama, Vancouver, and in many oil & LNG terminals worldwide with SMIT LAMNALCO.
This combination of modern crews and tugs guarantees the consistent high quality, safety and
competitive rates SMIT is renowned for worldwide now also in Brazil.
SMIT Brasil is the driving force behind improved levels of safety, quality, and competition in the
market. Proof of this is being already the number 2 Brazilian port & terminal towage company after
4 years of service and the exclusive towage provider in the Petrobras Angra dos Reis oil terminal.
In addition SMIT Brasil is assisting in the development of all other Boskalis group services in Brazil,
expanding our dredging, offshore projects, maritime support and diving services.
BOSKALIS OFFSHORE has a vast track record of modules lifting and integration for FPSO and
platforms with sheerlegs (floating cranes) that already consists of P47 (2004), Caratinga (2004),
Barracuda (2004), P52 (2006), P51 (2007), P53 (2008), P57 (2010), P56 (2010), FPSO Cidade de
Paraty (2012), and next project will be FPSO Cidade de Mangaratiba (2013). BOSKALIS OFFSHORE
will also install the moorings and hook-up for the FPSO OSX-3 for MODEC and OSX in 2013.
SMIT SALVAGE continues to be on the look-out in Brazil, being the world’s most experienced and
effective contingency partner for maritime emergencies and wreck removals, avoiding damage to
the environment, crews, vessels and platforms. The Brazilian track record consists amongst others
of the famous cases “Trade Daring” (1994) and “Vicuna” (2004), and recently “Castillo de
Soutomaior” (2011), “Vale Beijing” (2011-2012), “Cos Joy” (2012), and “SEP Orion” (2012-2013).
