Investigadores portugueses integram expedição de mergulho mundial para a
conservação do meio marinho
A Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) no seu navio de expedição Pacific Provider, vai juntar-se
aos biólogos marinhos Joana Boavida e Diogo Paulo do Centro de Ciências do Mar, Universidade
do Algarve, e a João Rodrigues e Tiago Dores do Centro de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental,
para conduzir vários mergulhos profundos de investigação científica em Portugal, em Junho e
Julho de 2014. As investigações vão ser realizadas por mergulhadores com treino especializado
em mergulhos até 120 metros de profundidade e por submarinos a operar até 300 metros abaixo
da superfície do mar. Os objetivos desta missão são mapear e documentar recifes profundos e as
formas de vida que abrigam. Alguns mergulhos em grutas também estão planeados. Esta
expedição faz parte do esforço de conservação global da GUE – Projecto Baseline (Linha de
Base, em português) – em ajudar a implementar estudos de base sobre as condições ambientais
do meio aquático.
A GUE é uma organização sem fins lucrativos dedicada à exploração e conservação do mundo
subaquático. Nos últimos 15 anos tem treinado e organizado alguns dos mergulhadores mais
capazes do Mundo numa rede de equipas que exploram regularmente todo o tipo de ambientes
subaquáticos, incluindo recifes profundos, grutas, lagos de montanha e naufrágios perdidos. Em
2009 a GUE estabeleceu o Projecto Baseline, focando as suas equipas globais na tarefa de
documentar as condições ambientais de base em todo o mundo.
No início de 2014 a GUE juntou-se à empresa Brownies Global Logistics para levar o Projecto
Baseline a novas profundidades, através da integração de mergulhadores e submarinos a bordo
do navio Pacific Provider. Esta nova relação facilita o acesso a recifes e estruturas marinhas
pouco documentadas na gama de profundidades entre 30 e 300 metros. Durante 2014, a equipa
vai explorar e mapear recifes profundos e navios afundados na Florida, Bahamas, Açores,
Portugal continental, Sardenha e Palermo. Através da colaboração com organizações como o
Centro de Ciências do Mar, Universidade do Algarve, o seu objetivo é trazer imagens, mapas e
dados que promovam uma melhor compreensão do mundo marinho aumentando os esforços
para a sua conservação.
Esta missão tem o apoio do Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas (ICNF), dos
centros de mergulho Subnauta e Ecoalga, da associação SCIAENA e do projecto Deep Reefs
(CCMAR). Nos Açores a equipa conta com a colaboração do IMAR.

Portuguese researchers integrate world-diving expedition for the conservation of
the marine environment
Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) and their expedition ship, the Pacific Provider will be
teaming with marine biologists Joana Boavida and Diogo Paulo from the Center for
Marine Sciences at the University of Algarve and João Rodrigues and Tiago Dores from
the Center of Marine and Environment Research to conduct a series of deep marine
investigations in Portugal, in June and July of 2014. The investigations will be conducted
by technically trained scuba divers operating at depths between 30 and 120 meters and
by acrylic submarines operating below them to 300 meters below the sea surface. Their
objectives will be to map and document never before observed deep reef structures and
the life forms within them. Cave dives are also planned. These investigations are part of
GUE’s broader global conservation effort – Project Baseline - to help establish
environmental baseline conditions in the world’s underwater environments.
GUE is a non-profit organization dedicated to the exploration and conservation of the
underwater world. Over the past 15 years they have trained and organized some of the
world’s most capable and accomplished divers into a global network of teams that are
regularly exploring all manner of underwater environments including deep reefs, caves,
mountain lakes, and lost ship wrecks. In 2009, GUE established Project Baseline,
focusing their global teams upon the task of documenting baseline environmental
conditions around the world.
At the outset of 2014, GUE teamed with Brownies Global Logistics to carry Project
Baseline to new depths through the integration of divers and submersibles aboard the
165’ Pacific Provider. This new relationship facilitates access to reefs and marine
structures within the poorly documented range between 30 and 300 meters. During 2014,
the team will be exploring and mapping deep reefs and lost ship wrecks in Florida, the
Bahamas, the Azores, Portugal, Sardinia, and Palermo. Through collaborations with
organizations like the Center for Marine Sciences at the University of Algarve their goal is
to bring back images, maps, and data that will promote a better understanding of the
marine world and more effective efforts to conserve it.
This mission has the support of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests
(ICNF), the dive centres Subnauta and Ecoalga, the association SCIAENA and of Project
Deep Reefs (CCMAR). In the Azores the team has the collaboration of IMAR.
