Conversation between Marina Coelho and Ricardo Itabirito at the studio at Avenida São João, on September 25, 2012, regarding the exhibition held at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo in October 2012. Marina Coelho: Would you like to tell a little how your relationship with arts began? I started to walk, talk and draw at the same time. As an adult, despite having always drawn, the relationship with the idea of producing image changed. I started a different process with the idea of painting, which was something that did not attract me. I did not like the lack of accuracy of the painting, I preferred the line of the drawing, which I had more control of. I went to industrial design school, where there was a strong relationship with drawing. RI: Eu fui perdendo a fé no processo industrial. And it’s funny because you followed a career in product design and not in graphic design. RI: It’s because I also had a desire for something three-dimensional, to make objects, to be in the environment, not on the wall, or on the computer. MC: After working many years with design then you decided to study fine arts, right? RI: I was losing faith in the industrial process. Some of the things that I do not like the structure of the industrial process are the human relationships and the lack of freedom to create when producing. I was there, working with a lot of people, thinking processes for many people, but always postponing what I wanted to accomplish for myself. A família do meu pai era de boa formação intelectual, então chegavam coisas kind of a not-artistic reasoning, you have to produce, must have financial stability, etc.. In the country side of Minas Gerais region, the distance from everyday life and an art gallery or a museum is very big. The city of Itabirito has today something around 40 thousand inhabitants, but there was an increase, and when I was young it was about 25 thousand. It is a mining and industrial city, with textile industry, tanneries, etc.. Thus, there was this more pragmatic thought. At home, however, it was slightly different: there were super 8 projections in the living-room, there were some magazines and good books with pictures of famous artists and painters, that I liked to copy. My father’s family had a good intellectual background, so good things reached me. But I always had this education to let go all that, and I think that there was a family concern to distract me from the arts as I drew compulsively from an early age. After fulfilling this attempt to be an entrepreneur, Issue # 1/12: Ricardo Itabirito 05 RI: Os dois primeiros anos eu ainda tinha a fábrica e ainda trabalhava no processo de desenvolvimento dessa planta industrial. Eu tinha umas ideias de vídeo, MC: How was this process of transition of leaving something that was extremely rational and diving for four years in fine arts school? RI: During the first two years I still had the factory and I worked in the development process of this industrial plan. I kept alternating myself between both activities until I decided to quit, because I could not keep working to earn money and just paint in my spare time. I did not want it as a hobby. When I entered the school I did not start painting right away. I had some ideas for video, film, installation, I made some art direction with the drama school that was next to mine, I learned a bit of scenography and performance, I was art direction assistant for a film and scenographist for a short film. I only started painting when I was in the second year of the school. We worked with ceramics, wood, stone, metal, doing a bit of everything, and then we went to the workshop and could direct our work to what we liked better. Then I went to the first sculpture workshop and there were only two left to graduate in sculpture. But, along the way, I ended up taking painting as the main study and sculpture was something complementary. No fim desse primeiro ano eu comecei a experimentar formatos grandes mesmos. Eu comecei a fazer muitos literature, commenting your work, instead of exactly saying what you have to do. At the end of that first year I started to experience really big formats. I received some commissions, a panel for a bar, and a stage for a ballet, which were things I had to paint in large formats. I started to do a a lot of works mixing all techniques as well. It was a period of two years of much experimentation: painting the canvas on the wall, then turning it upside down, or laying on the floor, .etc. I work a lot the same canvas. MC: At what point did you get to this type of painting that you developed for the exhibition? RI: It was in the last semester of school, when we start to prepare the works that will be part of our conclusion paper. It was the first time that I thought of a series, that I started to review my references, what I had studied, and tried to establish a direction for this work. There was no difference in the reasoning of what is draw and what is painting, nor even of what is figure and background. I did not want the Renaissance thought in which one draws limiting all things with an outline, marking the volumes, the perspective, the background, and then paint. I wanted a primitive thinking, in which I did not have to think about the background. And then I came up with this paper background, because a blank paper does not mean the same thing as a blank canvas, it is a different sign. It is very neutral. A blank canvas brings an information of something that is unfinished, and a blank paper is not unfinished. Não existia a diferença de MC: For me, your figures are as beings, to which you do not give names, nor eyes, but that are there, with an energetic presence, like entities, perhaps. Would you like to talk a little about these figures? RI: They have no eyes, no mouth neither nose, because I do not want to talk about someone, it is a not picture, and I do not want it to refer to any kind of identity thought. This is to speak of relationships, generic understandings, thoughts about what it is to be alive. It is an idea of bringing the sensation, because it is difficult to put it in words. RI: I think it dangerous to declare that… (Laughs). Giacometti speaks very well of these things. RI: When I started doing these figures, obviously that the professors told me that I had to see Alberto Giacometti. He says: - I paint to eat, to get fatter to have more strength to paint, to live more and more to paint. His figures do not have identity also, because there is no need to have an identity. His painting is very beautiful and very deep, even more than some of his sculptures. One of the things I liked the most was to have had contact with the texts of the artists themselves. RI: Maybe. I think so. Each one will establish a different relationship with it. And the word is something very restricted. MC: The strength of your work is this energetic presence, like in these big works “Fonte Figura” and “Figura Acontece,” which we used refer to as waterfalls, and where one sees the force of the water. With a career which began in industrial design, Ricardo developed his work emphasizing the process of execution of his works, the relationship with matter, the act of painting, the gestures of each stroke, the color choices, and so forth. Such issues are more important for him than the search for a possible theme or conceptual content. Shi Tao, Chinese artist of the seventeenth century known by the pseudonym Bitter Pumpkin Monk, describes in the text “Notes on Painting” the act of painting as a philosophical process, a time of reflection and elaboration of one’s world understanding. FOLD HERE No matter how far you go,you must begin with a single step elaboração do entendimento do mundo. Apresentadas em escala humana, essas figuras não têm rostos, não têm olhos, nem bocas, pois não estão ali para representarem you go, how high you climb, you must begin with a single step” inspiration for Ricardo Itabirito’s exhibition title - Shi Tao considers this single step as being what he calls a “Single Brush Stroke”, “a simple brush stroke, which is the privileged channel through which one expresses the ‘spiritual rhythm’, the only intermediary capable of transmitting the vision of the spirit in the world of forms.” 1 In this painting treaty, the artist speaks of the importance and strength of each brush stroke, which must have the correct energy, fluidity and rhythm. Similarly, for Ricardo Itabirito the act of painting and repainting, with hundreds of strokes, imprints in his works a force, an energetic presence, which can be viewed in the suggested figures.
