Objectives & Achievements
Objectives
The general objectives of the work group are those detailed in last year’s report. It is our goal to continue to develop the group’s research
endeavours within the vast area of Built Heritage, including very diverse areas, from rehabilitation projects in specific architectonic works to
studies geared towards the analysis and definition of intervention methodologies in historical centres, expending urban areas, and territorial and
landscape units of patrimonial value.
Furthermore, the field of study also encompasses the domain of interpretation and architectural intervention in areas and archaeological sites,
as well as the analysis of interventions in the recent architectural patrimony that are part of the heritage of the Modern Movement.
The main geographical area of study is that of the national territory, with particular emphasis on the north-western region of the Iberian
Peninsula. However, bearing in mind existing valuable exchanges with Brazilian and other Latin American universities, the work group considers
it to be worthwhile to extend the scope of its research field to other regions in the world where the Portuguese architectural culture has
produced works and affirmed its identity.
The different topics described above are organized in three main lines of research:
- Studies on City and Territorial Heritage;
- Architectural Rehabilitation Actions in Built Heritage;
- Atlas of Ways and Ancient Towns of Portugal.
As to the first research line, the patrimony studies to be developed – from the form of the town to the form of waterfront territory – will have
the city of Porto as its starting point and may extend to the Douro Valley and the Atlantic coast and the north-western region of the Iberian
Peninsula. The general framework of this line of research includes: the importance of industrial and port activities in the development of the city
of Porto and the northern region throughout its history; the relations between central and local political powers and mercantile and customs
activities; the projects for the improvement of the navigability of the Douro River and the construction of several port infrastructures and other
types of industrial works with patrimonial value.
A second area will be referred to - Actions for the Rehabilitation of Architectural Heritage - and seek to critically assess the processes of
intervention in old buildings, focusing on the actions, past and ongoing, in several cities (Porto, Évora , Coimbra, Guimarães, etc.), determining
relevant characteristics of their projects and works, with emphasis on aspects related to architectural and design solutions and their
interrelationship.
The evaluation, expected to be both of quantitative and qualitative nature (using a methodology of Post-Occupancy Evaluation - POE) will tend
to determine the merits and demerits, the appropriateness and inappropriateness of technical and conceptual experiences in order to generate
data and reviews that eventually could justify the definition of new management and intervention processes on the urban heritage.
In addition, we intend to develop an intervention model in old buildings, taking as case study Porto houses from XVIII to XIX centuries, based on
minimally invasive methods, focusing on recovery and rehabilitation of materials and traditional building techniques, adapting it to the
requirements of comfort, functional efficiency and sustainability, which should characterize the construction of buildings today.
The third line – Atlas of the ancient routes and cities of Portugal - is still focused on the analysis, systematization and dissemination of the
intervention process developed in the territory since the period of Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula, especially in Portugal, until the late
nineteenth century. With the work on historical cartography available, but scattered, efforts will provide a reading of the networks roads in
Portugal and its relationship with Europe, throughout history.
All research lines have as common goals the organization of exhibitions, publications, seminars and debates on and with the materials that will
be analysed and produced, as well as the creation of post-graduate courses in these specific areas of study.
The supervision of doctoral and master’s dissertations and the presentation of papers in conferences are still fundamental objectives of this
group and will continue to be the hallmark of the identity of the Architecture, City and Territorial Heritage Research Group.
Main Achievements
In 2010, the Atlas of ways and ancient towns of Portugal line of research has participated in the organizing of the 1st International Workshop of
Architecture, Landscape and Archaeology - Designing the archaeological landscape, held in Tiermes (Soria), 13-19 October, organized by the
Dirección General de Patrimonio Cultural Junta Castilla y Leon and Universidad de Valladolid, in collaboration with the Museo Numantino, the
Università degli Studi Roma Tre, the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto and IE Universidad. This action allowed us to prepare,
for the year 2011, the organization and the realization of the 2nd International Workshop of Architecture, Landscape and Archaeology Tongobriga 2011, involving the same institutions (FAUP-ETSAV-RomaTre). The Workshop aims to promote a project-oriented approach to
perception, comprehension and interpretation of archaeological remains from the territory of Tongobriga (Freixo, Marco de Canavezes) in its
cultural, social and lanscape context. It is also the aim of this Workshop to promote a contemporary debate about the cultural occidental
landscape, from an integrative perspective, produce drawn records and plausible solutions about the archaeological site of Tongobriga.
It will be held during the academic year 2010/11 the first edition of a course of advanced studies at the Architectural Heritage (third cycle level),
