and to die with dignity
John C. Westcott died after a short
illness at Ellis Hospital on February 1,
2011 at the age of 84. Born May 2,
1926 in Schenectady, John had a long
career in both the power industry and
in the performance test codes arena.
After earning his bachelor's degree in mechanical
engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1946, he
began work at General Electric Company in the
engineering training program and then was assigned to the
Steam Research Section of Steam Turbine Engineering.
There he was a responsible for the operation of the Air
Test Laboratory and for conducting turbine design
information tests during actual power plant operation. He
organized and conducted more than 30 power plant tests
including Dresden 1, GE's first large nuclear unit.
He is survived by Norma, his loving wife of 56 years; his
five children, Michele Westcott Kilmanas, Brian Westcott,
Karen Lautenschlager, Mark Westcott and Carol Yurkovic;
six grandchildren, Michael, Daniel and Joseph
Lautenschlager, Sarah and Paul Wescott and Jonathan
Yurkovic; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours
will be on Friday, February 4 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the
Glenville Funeral Home on Glenridge Road. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 5
at St. John the Evangelist Church, Schenectady, N.Y. at 11
a.m. Donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist
Church, 816 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308, or the
Sunnyview Rehabilitation Foundation, 1270 Belmont Ave.,
Schenectady, NY.

Highlights:
-Provides emergency assistance to local residence.
-Originally created in 1930's by police chief and a nurse
to help during the depression era.
-Referrals made by school personnel and church
organizations.
-Local school nurse is best contact person.
-Currently working on 501(c)3 nonprofit status to help
with matching grants and donations.
-A voucher system is used to cover items such as
utilities and food (no cash).
-Last year about $6,500 distributed mostly for food.
-Requests reviewed as needed.
-Maximum $250/family/year.
