Uma Guerra Verde / A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet
Being for more than 30 years

watching A Fierce Green Fire made
inevitable to feel a mixture of joy
with nostalgia, half proud, half
painful - mix of achievement with

públicas pelas causas ambientais
e democráticas, ao assistir a Uma
Guerra Verde foi inevitável sentir um
misto de alegria com nostalgia, meio
orgulhosa, meio dolorosa – mescla
de realização com esperança e frustração. Neste filme (e nos demais
trazidos pela Ecofalante 2013 sobre
o tema Mobilização), temos o registro de movimentos que há meio
século vêm puxando a pauta ambiental, enfrentando – com maior ou
menor sucesso – poderosíssimos
obstáculos e interesses, tanto em
nível global como local.
Ver o quanto cresceu a questão socioambiental em termos de presença na mídia, nas
conversas das pessoas comuns e nos discursos
das empresas e políticos é motivo de contentamento: não há dúvida de que assuntos que
até há não muito tempo atrás eram tachados
de ingênuos ou ecochatice são agora discutidos por cidadãos e instituições bem distantes
das convicções eminentemente filosóficas e éticas que motivaram os pioneiros do movimento.
O espaço conquistado no discurso mainstream
é um claro sinal de sucesso, mesmo que as
mudanças práticas já obtidas ainda estejam
bem aquém do necessário.
Quanto avançamos, de fato? É impossível
ignorar a semelhança dos chamados que vemos
hoje na internet e nas mídias sociais com os clamores inflamados dos ativistas nos megafones

e as palavras de ordem nas faixas e cartazes de
décadas passadas. Descontando o maior nível
de informação e a maior urgência do que já era
urgente, os alertas dos cientistas e líderes de
então não diferem muito dos de agora. Daí o
gosto de frustração, de preocupação quanto ao
que foram, de fato, tais avanços.
Como um espelho multitemporal, os documentários nos mostram lutas e conquistas do
passado – fonte de realização e esperança –,
mas também a persistência de desafios semelhantes no presente, trazendo um toque amargo
às vitórias e uma preocupação pelo futuro: dará
tempo? Teremos forças e ânimos renovados?
Andar na contramão da cultura de consumo
e concentração de renda/poder predominante
não é um desafio pequeno: enquanto crescem a
consciência e o engajamento, crescem também
a alienação, o consumismo e a ganância. Difícil
dizer com certeza qual a resultante... Entre
avanços de um lado e de outro, o que mudou
no conjunto? Estamos mais próximos ou mais
distantes da sociedade socialmente justa, economicamente próspera e ambientalmente
sustentável de que há tanto tempo falamos?
Apesar dos pesares, como testemunha ocular do passado e do presente, creio que estamos
hoje bem mais próximos desse ideal do que há
30 ou 40 anos. Há velhos e novos problemas,

Seeing how the environmental
issue has grown in terms of media
presence, in ordinary people
conversation and in the politicians
speeches and businesses is a
reason for joy: there is no doubt
that subjects who until not long
ago were labeled as naive or ecoboringness are now discussed
by citizens and institutions far
from the highly philosophical and
ethical convictions that motivated
the pioneers of the movement.
The space gained in mainstream
discourse is a clear sign of success,
even if the practical changes already
obtained are still much below the
needs.
How has we moved forward, in
fact? It is impossible to ignore
the similarity of calls that we see
today on the Internet and in social
media with inflamed activists
claims in megaphones and the
slogans on banners and posters of
the past decades. Discounting the
highest level of information and
greater urgency than it was already
urgent, the warnings of scientists
and leaders do not differ so much
from the today´s ones. That is the
reason for the taste of frustration,

foi certamente um marco histórico nesta nova
fase da mobilização socioambiental planetária.
Talvez o ativismo do século XXI coloque
gente nas ruas com menor volume e frequência, mas nem por isso deve ser visto como
menos relevante ou engajado. Assim como
mudam os tempos e os campos de ação, também mudam os atores e suas formas de agir.
A geração nascida e crescida no mundo globalizado tipicamente não se conforma com a
rigidez e limitações das instituições criadas nos
séculos anteriores, e está ativamente criando
novos caminhos. Da política representativa
estamos rumando para a política autoral, na
qual o cidadão não se limita a escolher e fiscalizar seus representantes eleitos, mas vai além,
colocando-se direta e permanentemente na
política e na esfera pública. Como isso funcionará, exatamente, não se sabe. Mas é certo que
estamos fazendo e aprendendo a cada dia.
E aqui retorno ao espelho multitemporal do
cinema, com seu poder único de não só mostrar
o passado nostálgico mas também de nos projetar o futuro. E como é ele? Pode ser sombrio
e derrotista, mas também pode ser o resultado
dos desejos e empenhos positivos que acalentarmos agora. Pode ser a vida precária num cenário
pós-apocalíptico, como pode ser o bem viver conquistado com a superação dos desafios presentes,
se desde já colocarmos nossa energia criativa para
desenhar e construir o futuro desejado.

same time? Less showy images
yielded, but less important? How
can the film record and translate a so
great power, but also so dispersed?
World leaders did not give the huge
appeal of the TckTckTck Campaign
(TicTacTicTac in Brazil), but it was
certainly a milestone in this new
phase of global socio-environmental
mobilization.
Perhaps the XXI century activism
put people on the streets with
lower volume and frequency, but
by no means should be seen as
less relevant or engaged. As the
times and the fields of action
changes, so do the actors and their
ways of acting. The generation
born and raised in the globalized
world typically does not conform
to rigidity and limitations of the
institutions created in previous
centuries, and is actively creating
new paths. From the representative
politics we are heading for copyright
policy, in which the citizen is not
limited to choosing and overseeing
their elected representatives, but
goes beyond, putting themselves
directly and permanently in politics
and in the public sphere. How will
it work, exactly, nobody knows. But
it is certain that we are doing and
learning every day.
And here I return to the cinema

Quanto falta para chegarmos lá, não sabemos, mas o certo é que temos ainda um bom
caminho pela frente. E não adianta nostalgia, pois os tempos são outros: não é mais só
o povo na rua (que saudades!), mas também a
mudança positiva, o mudar já e fazer diferente,
o rearranjar-se dinâmico dos cardumes.
É bom aprender com o passado, mas é também essencial projetar e construir, nas telonas
e telinhas, o futuro que queremos.

the future. And how is it? It may
be gloomy and defeatist, but it can
also be the result of positive desires
and endeavors which we cherish
now. May be the precarious life in a
post-apocalyptic scenario, or even
may be an achieved good living by
overcoming the present challenges,
if from now on we put our creative
energy to design and build the
expected future.
How long will it take to get there,
we do not know, but the truth is
that we still have a long way to go.
And nostalgia will not work here,
because times have changed: it is
no longer only the people in the
street (we miss this!), but also a
positive change, and changing
means already doing differently, the
dynamic rearranging of the shoals.
It’s good to learn from the past,
but it is also essential to design and
build, on the big and small screen,
the future we want.
