Tapescripts PART 1 RECEPTIONIST MIKE JANE MIKE RECEPTIONIST JANE RECEPTIONIST MIKE RECEPTIONIST JANE RECEPTIONIST JANE RECEPTIONIST MIKE RECEPTIONIST MIKE JANE Hi. How can I help? Hello. Hi. Yeah, we were thinking about going to the Statue of Liberty and we wanted to know how best to get there. Well, you need to take the subway to South Ferry, that’s the station in Battery Park. And do the ferries go regularly? Sure. Every half hour. The first one leaves at 8.30, I think. Do you have a City Pass? Because with that you can go straight to the front of the line before you get on the ferry. A City Pass? No. And how much is that? Well, a one-day pass is around $80 and a two-day one is around 120. With it you can get into as many attractions as you want. Hmm. And the ferry ticket by itself? I think it’s $15. The question is how long do you want to spend at the Statue? Do you want to walk up to the top, you know, to the crown? Oh, definitely. Because that takes some time as well. Mmm. No, I don’t think we’ll bother with the City Pass. We’ll need the whole day. Yeah, and a lot of patience. They’re doing airport-style security checks everywhere now. Hmm. OK. PART 2 RANGER OK, folks, let me give you some basic information about the Statue. Well, as you can see, it’s pretty tall. From the ground to the tip of the torch it’s 93 meters. Of course that’s not how tall Lady Liberty is herself because she’s standing on a pedestal. That’s 47 meters high. From down here it’s difficult to appreciate the dimensions, isn’t it? You see the tablet she’s holding in her hand? Yeah? Well, that’s 7 meters by 4 meters. A pretty heavy book, don’t you think? Now, you can also see that the crown she’s wearing has seven points. Those represent the seven seas and seven continents of the world. OK, now I’ve got a question for you folks. How many windows are there in the crown? Anyone want to make a guess? No? OK, I’ll tell you. Twenty-five. 2 PART 3 TOURIST JANE TOURIST JANE MIKE TOURIST MIKE TOURIST MIKE TOURIST JANE TOURIST JANE TOURIST MIKE TOURIST JANE TOURIST MIKE TOURIST MIKE JANE TOURIST MIKE Impressive, isn’t it? Yes, very. Did you manage to go up to the crown? Well, we wanted to, but it was too busy. We didn’t realize they issued timed tickets. It’s always busy. I had to book my ticket three days ago. OK. And have you got one of those City Passes? Yes, a seven-day one. Of course it’s a lot of money, $170, but if you pack a lot into your week, you actually save quite a lot. Uh-huh. When you’re traveling alone it’s easy. The last time I came here was with my mother. We had tickets for the crown. But then we got about half way up the stairs and had to come down again. She was exhausted. Oh dear. It was summer and it must’ve been almost 100 degrees in there. Oh no. Anyway, the rangers gave her something to drink and let her lie down and she was fine later. Is it true that there’re steps that go up the arm as well? Yeah, as far as the torch. But they’ve been closed to the public for about 100 years. It must be amazing up there. It is. It is? I thought you said... ...don’t you know - they’ve got webcams up there now. Oh, wow. That’s great! I bet your mother’s pleased. Yes, she is. She’s on the internet all the time Um. Hm. 3 A.
