Fano (source wikipedia) Fano (Fan in Gallic-Italic dialect Marche) is an Italian town of 61,200 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche. The city, famous for its carnival, the oldest in Italy, appears to be the third largest city by population in the Marche region, after Ancona and Pesaro. Fano is surrounded to the north-west from the hills which slope near the creek Arzilla. The city is located, albeit slightly, elevated above the sea level (Arch of Augustus, altitude 17 m. The coast is divided into Lido and Saxony, both with low coasts, the first sandy, the second gravel. To the south is the so-called "Piana del Metauro", one of the few flat areas of the Marches, which expands even within a few kilometers. the southern coast is divided into Turrets, Ponte Sasso and Metaurilia, the latter founded after a work of land reclamation in 1938. it is bordered to the north-west by the town of Pesaro; west, bordered by the river valley Arzilla and the hills that divide it with that of the Leaf with the communes of Cartoceto Mombaroccio and to the south, climbing steeply to about 200m slm borders the town of Piagge, to the east by the town of San Costanzo climbing some rolling hills and the town of Mondolfo. the territory of Fano is crossed by Vallato Port channel or Albani, a canal fed by the river Metauro. The Vallato passes for hydroelectric power station Smooth and enter the port-channel Fano. Fano, according to the classification of Köppen is included in the climate zone D (boreal climate) while according to the climate classification of Italian municipalities belongs to the area and, while regarding the seismic classification belongs to zone 2: seismicity media. Fano was a center Piceno, as evidenced by sporadic findings occurred in the city and the ruins of Montegiove and Roncosambaccio. He was later a major Roman city, known as Fanum Fortunae, name that refers to the "Temple of Fortune", probably erected to witness the battle of Metauro: it was the year 207 BC and the Roman legions defeated the army of the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal, killing the leader who, after crossing the Alps with war elephants, intended to be reunited with his brother Hannibal. The city had a remarkable development during the Roman rule due to its strategic position on the road that connected the Tiber valley to Gaul. In 49 BC Gaius Julius Caesar conquered along with Pesaro, thus starting the Civil War against rival Pompey. Only later Emperor Augustus endows the settlement of boundary walls (still partially visible), elevating the settlement to the state of the Roman colony under the name of Colonia Julia Fanestris. Some centuries later, in 271 AD, was held near it the Battle of Fano which marked the end of the attempt of the Germans to reach Rome, defeated by Emperor Aurelian. During the Gothic War of the sixth century, due to its location in the links between northern and southern Italy, was besieged and devastated by the Ostrogoths Vitige (538) and a short time later rebuilt by the army of the Byzantine Belisarius and Narses. Palazzo della Ragione Later it became part of the Maritime Pentapolis (Rimini, Pesaro, Fano, Senigallia, Ancona), of which he was head. Underwent subsequent occupation of the Lombards and Franks, until Otto III not donated to Pope Sylvester II. In the thirteenth century Fano was formed common; in the following century it was for a short time under the rule of the Este, after which he was torn apart by infighting between two families: the formwork and from Carignano. At the end of the twelfth century, the city came under the rule Malatesta of Rimini, thanks to a plot hatched by the latter against the two rival families. Malatesta family remained in power in the city until 1463, when he had to leave Sigismondo Malatesta Fano to the Duke of Urbino Federico da Montefeltro after a long siege, during which it was damaged the Arch of Augustus, symbol of the city. The people refused to become part of the Duchy of Urbino and therefore became vicariate church. During the Napoleonic occupation of the Papal States was plundered and severely bombed by the army of Bonaparte. Actively participated in the uprisings by creating provisional governments. During the First World War (1915-1918) suffered numerous Austrian naval bombardments and also in World War II (1940-1945) being on the Gothic Line underwent many Allied air raids aimed at the destruction of its railway and road bridges and, as part of 'retreating German army, the destruction of almost all its bell towers (except those of St. Francis of Paola and San Marco), the tower, the male of the Malatesta fortress and its fishing port, considered by the enemy as not critical infrastructures leave in the hands of the Allies. Monuments and places of interest Porta Maggiore and Arch of Augustus Piazza XX Settembre: Palazzo della Ragione with its sixteenth Fountain of Fortune. War memorial in the city of Fano. civil buildings Fanum Fortunae was definitely, in Roman times, an important sacred center, in fact the city shows in his name (Fanum) a clear reference to a sacred area or temple dedicated to the worship of the goddess Fortuna. Since dall'80-70 BC is considered certain that the Roman presence in Fano. The culmination of the Roman presence you have in the imperial period Augustus and in fact date back to that time a large number of monuments. Arch of Augustus. A symbol of the city of Fano, was in Roman times the main gateway to the Colonia Julia Fanestris, deduced by the Emperor Augustus Fanum Fortunae (temple dedicated to the Goddess Fortuna). Built on the spot where the Via Flaminia decumannus grafted in the city, the monument is given, through the recording of the frieze, 9 AD Mura. The defensive walls town, still well preserved, was first built by the Romans in the ninth century AD, later expanded by the Malatesta in the fifteenth century, and finally reinforced by papal sovereign in '500. By Emperor Augustus, the Roman walls are still preserved today for about two-thirds of the original circuit. The boundary goes north-west from the port of Augustus up to the fifteenth century Malatesta Cardo and Decumanus. In the current plan of the city of Fano and still evident: the decumanus maximus (now Via Arco d'Augusto), continuation of the urban road Flaminia, and cardus maximus perpendicular to it, traced in part between the current Corso Matteotti and the parallel via Nolfi. The meeting of these roads would be the hole. The two major roads are flanked, at regular distances, decumani and lower hinges. Via Flaminia. It was the way desired by the Consul Flaminio, from which it takes its name, and built from 220 BC Connects Rome to Rimini and probably follows long stretches ancient streets proto Umbria. Only the points of the journey more "difficult" were paved, while the others were brecciated. A Fano Flaminia entered the city from the Arch of Augustus and arrived in Rimini center off again for coming out of the door of the Herd (behind the war memorial). Bas-relief of San Paterno. Depicting San Paterno, patron and first bishop of the city of Fano, who lived between the third and fourth centuries, has been completely restored. It is a sandstone sculpture of the fifteenth century that until 1926 was walled in the house which is located on the corner of Piazza XX Settembre and Corso Matteotti, home to the aristocratic Jacobins, nobles of Fano, patricians of Jesi, originating in Stafford. As reported Piercarlo Borgogelli Ottaviani in "Study Picena" "This sculpture is the patron saint Paterniano attired in pontifical vestments that, clasped hands, greenhouse with his left arm on the heart, instead of the pastoral, a sign of his episcopal dignity, the banner of Fano, who in high relief exactly reproduces the field and the three overlapping pieces ... " The restoration was carried out by the restorer Daniel Nardini. The bas-relief is exposed in the staircase of access to the Palazzo Malatesta. The most noted figure of San Paterno is certainly one that stands out in a central position in the triptych of the Protectors decorating the facade of the Palazzo del Podesta in Piazza XX Settembre. Its location symbolizes the prominence that the Bishop of Fano was assigned by the City Council more than the other two patron saints: St. Eusebius and St. Fortunato. Urbino (source Wikipedia) Urbino (URBIN in Gallic-Italic dialect Marche Urvinum Mataurense in Latin) is an Italian town of 15,346 inhabitants, capital of the province of Pesaro and Urbino and Pesaro in the Marche. He was one of the major centers of the Italian Renaissance, which still retains full architectural heritage, since 1998 its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage. The territory extends in a hilly area, on the foothills of the Northern, Tuscan-Romagna, in the southern part of Montefeltro, in an area classified as a medium to high seismic risk. In the database of earthquakes developed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, are reported less than 65 seismic events that have affected the town of Urbino between 26 March 1511 and 26 March 1998. Among them, the strongest shock was that of 'VIII grade of Mercalli Scale of April 24, 1741 which was the epicenter in Fabriano (where he reached the 6.08 on the Richter Scale and ninth grade Mercalli), that of the seventh degree of the Mercalli Scale of June 23, 1781 which was the epicenter in Cagliese (where he reached the 6:23 on the Richter Scale and the IX-X capable of Mercalli), that of the seventh degree of the Mercalli Scale of 21 September 1897 was the epicenter in the Adriatic sea in central and the sixth-seventh degree of the Mercalli Scale of March 12, 1873 that was the epicenter in the southern Marche (where he reached the 5.88 on the Richter Scale and eighth grade Mercalli); were also recorded in the same period analyzed nine different earthquakes that Urbino reached the sixth grade of the Mercalli Scale. Seismic classification: zone 2 (medium-high seismicity), Ordinance PCM 3274 of 20/03/2003 The municipal area also includes an exclave, identifiable in Via Fosso del Rocket, between the towns of Colbordolo, Monteciccardo, Montefelcino, Petriano and the exclave of Montelabbate. According to the Latin tradition, the name derives from Urbino Urvinum Mataurense. Urvinum (or Urbinum) derives from the noun urvum (or Urbum), which designated the handle of the plow, the shape of which resembled the hill of Poggio (on which there was the original core of the city). While the term Mataurense (Metaurense) comes from the geographical proximity to the river Mataurus (Metaurus), the current Metauro. Origins and Middle Ages Remains of the Gate Minor, southern end of the ancient Cardo Maximus The Roman city of Urvinum Metaurense became an important center during the Gothic Wars in the sixth century. He was then taken in 538 by the Byzantine Belisario, removing the Goths, and was frequently mentioned by the Byzantine historian Procopius. It then passed into the domain of the Lombards, then the Franks. The king of the Franks Pippin presented Urbino to the Papal States. However, traditions autonomies were expressed in the form of government of the City until, in 1200, came under the rule of the fighting nobles of nearby Montefeltro. They had no direct authority on the town, but could pressure their election as mayor, a title that Bonconte da Montefeltro managed to obtain in 1213, with the result that the Urbino rebelled, formed an alliance with the independent commune of Rimini (1228) and in 1234 it rimpossessarono control of their city. Subsequently, however, the Montefeltro managed to take over the reins of the city that controlled then until 1508. During this period, Urbino took part in the aspect that still today, with its city walls. In the battles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, the lords of Urbino of the thirteenth and sixteenth century were leaders of the Ghibellines of the Marche and Romagna, and were associated with families or Ghibelline cities. The December 24, 1375 Count Antonio da Montefeltro, with the weapons of the Florentine-alloy Visconti fell in Urbino and he was "yelled" sir. But, writes Gino Franceschini (Documents and Regesti, Urbino, 1982, pp. IVV), "was not enough to be 'shouted' Sir, you had to have the capability of becoming [...]. In the covenant of February 1376 the city Urbino and Cagli participated in the pact with the Lord on equal footing as sharers commitments and charges stipulated by him, while he was acting on behalf of the lands that they obeyed as 'dominus' and militia leader ". He was born the State of Urbino that records a significant political change as a result of the considerable growth generated by the acquisition of territorial Gubbio 1384. The period of Federico di Montefeltro The most famous member of the Montefeltro was Federico, lord of Urbino from 1444 to 1482, leader of success, skillful diplomat and an enthusiastic patron of the arts and literature. Took power in 1444 as the son of Guidantonio, after the conspiracy and the murder of the legitimate Oddantonio, unpopular for the "inordinate lust" and excessive fiscalismo exercised during his seventeen months in office. Federico put his hand to the political imperative and began a reorganization of the state, which included a restructuring of the city according to a modern conception, comfortable, efficient and beautiful. All his efforts, in nearly forty years of government, were aimed at this purpose which, thanks to its extraordinary qualities combined with a considerable fortune, he came to a breath away from full realization. At his court, Piero della Francesca wrote on the science of perspective, Francesco di Giorgio Martini wrote his Treatise on Architecture (concluding the renovation of the Palazzo Ducale started by Luciano Laurana), and Raphael's father, Giovanni Santi, wrote his poetic account of the leading artists of the period. The brilliant court of Frederick, through descriptions of Baldassare Castiglione's The Courtier, introduced the characters of the "gentleman" in Europe, which remained fully in vogue until the twentieth century. Cesare Borgia and the years of the Duchy Della Rovere Cesare Borgia dispossessed Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, and Elisabetta Gonzaga in 1502, with the complicity of his father Pope Alexander VI. After the attempted Medici Pope, Leo X, to appoint a young Medici as duke, Urbino was part of the Papal States, under the dynasty of the Dukes Della Rovere (1508-1631). They moved in 1523 the court in the city of Pesaro and Urbino began a slow decline that would continue until the last decades of the seventeenth century. Annexation of the Papal States Following the extinction of the dynasty of the Della Rovere (1631), Pope Urban VIII incorporated the Duchy of Urbino in the papal territories, following the will of the last Duke, Francesco Maria II, who was childless, had designated the Holy See succeed since 1625 (though the succession became enforceable only to the death of the Duke, six years later). The state was governed since then by a papal legate, usually belonging to the high ecclesiastical hierarchy. Following the devolution of the Duchy to the Papal States, the rich artistic heritage (including furniture) in the Palazzo Ducale went to form, for the most part, the dowry of the last direct descendant of the Della Rovere, Victoria, who married Ferdinand II de 'Medici; later these works form the core of the future Uffizi Gallery. Among the works go to Florence is the diptych of the Dukes of Urbino by Piero della Francesca. Other works of the Palazzo Ducale will be brought to Rome, as the Tablets Ex Barberini Fra Carnevale and the famous library, absorbed entirely by the Vatican Library in 1657. The Albani and the French occupation The eighteenth century opened with the election to the papacy (1701) of Cardinal Giovan Francesco Albani from Urbino, with the name of Clement XI. For the city opened the last great period of splendor, especially from an artistic-cultural; thanks to the funding, by Pope Albani and his family, of major renovation of various buildings, churches and monasteries of the city; as Palazzo Albani, part of the facade of the Town Hall, the Archbishop's Palace, the Chapel Albani (inside the convent of San Francesco), the Oratory of St. Joseph, the internal restructuring of the churches of St. Francis, St. Dominic and St. Augustine. While new buildings were constructed (Palazzo del Collegio Raffaello) and was promoted to the birth of a renowned artisan craftsmanship (Factory Pins). In addition, the patronage of the Pope and of his family, was reflected in rich donations to the Cathedral (like the new altar) and other religious organizations in the city. This new age of splendor for the city, ended with the death of Clement XI (1721), restarting the city to a long decline that has spread to the present day. After the death of the Pope, the Albani family will remain the main patron of the most significant works, until the first half of the nineteenth century, especially in people of Cardinal Annibale Albani and noble Orazio Albani, the latter will entrust the architect Pietro Ghinelli the realization New Palace (the present Piazza della Repubblica). In 1789, following the major earthquake that struck Urbino, there was the collapse of the dome of the Cathedral, an event that led to the total renovation of the church. Instead, between 1797 and 1800 the city was occupied by French troops, like much of central and northern. During the French occupation Urbino and its territory suffered the requisitions of important works of art, with their shift to Paris or Milan, in the nascent galleries of the Louvre or the Brera. This event was a further cause of the impoverished local artistic heritage, already tried by the loss of the works following the devolution of the Duchy in the seventeenth century. The redevelopment of the nineteenth century The century opened with the consecration of the new cathedral in 1809, according to the architect Giuseppe Valadier; that in the city Montefeltro restored important buildings, such as the old Seminary, next to the church of St. Sergius, now partially occupied by the Hotel Raphael. An important role in this first half of the century, it will have the noble Urbino Fulvio Corboli, defined later Father of the Nation, in designing a first project of urban renewal and to realize the need to solve the isolation of the city compared to the coastal area . Following the construction of the New Palace of Albani (1831), designed by architect Peter Ghinelli, which gave rise to the present Piazza della Repubblica, you went to form the first part of the future Corso Garibaldi; from now will begin a series of urban interventions designed to change the face of the city. Starting from the construction of the Teatro Sanzio (1845 - 1853); the realization of Corso Garibaldi, porch on the downstream side, to ensure theater-goers a covered walkway and directed by the current Republic Square, construction that lasted until the early years of the twentieth century. Also another important innovation was planning the killing, in 1868, a part of the walls to make a toll barrier, called New Gate or Barrier Margherita (in honor of Princess Margaret of Savoy), which was developing a new road ran along a stretch of the wall and was connected to Corso Garibaldi; resulting in this new provision urbanism came the arrangement of the large ground below the Palazzo Ducale (on the downstream side to the date), which will be called the Pincio. These urban transformations led to a change in access to the city, because if you had to first pass through narrow, winding streets, through the gates of the city walls, now you crossed the easier Porta Nuova and convenient way to arrive in the walls' current Republic Square or the Palazzo Ducale (the city center). This urban renewal reflected many of the ideas of Fulvio Corboli but its design was edited largely by architect Vincenzo Ghinelli. The Unification of Italy [edit The day September 8, 1860 the Piedmontese troops entered Urbino from Port Saint Lucia, forcing the surrender of the last resistance of the papal army on the porch of Raphael College. But you will have to wait until September 29, with the capture of Ancona, for the total conquest of the region Marche, by the Piedmontese army. Between 4 and 5 November was held the plebiscite for the annexation of Marche to the Kingdom of Sardinia, which ended with 133 783 votes in favor, 1,212 votes against and 260 invalid ballots; particularly in the province of Urbino (excluding the territory of Pesaro) you were 21 111 against the 365 and No 29 invalid ballots. Subsequently, on November 10, was also extended to the Marches the Albertine Statute, and then, on December 17, making official the annexation of the region to the Kingdom of Sardinia with the enactment of a royal decree. The new government put into effect the confiscation of various ecclesiastical goods, including good part of the convent of San Francesco (where a part was created a botanical garden, designed by Vincent Ghinelli), the Monastery of St. Clare, that of St. Jerome and many other. The first half of the twentieth century The century began as he had done the previous one, and it lasted for almost the entire first half, with no particular significant events. In this period is to be announced the full flowering of artistic activity of the School of the Book (Institute for the Decoration and Illustration of the Book) who expressed considerable talents on a national and international level. In addition to the great development known by the School of the Book, at this time we are witnessing the growth of the university town, with the elevation to university faculty of the School of Pharmacy of the nineteenth century and the birth of the Faculty of Education (1934 AC); resulting in the evolution of the University is an increase of the student population, highlighting the state of total unpreparedness of the city (poor housing), so much so that for the first time many students were hosted in the homes of private citizens. The problem was partly solved by the creation of the male boarding school "Raphael", the beginning of the century, and the boarding school female "Laura Battiferri", in 1926 ca. This period was dominated by the great events of national and international history, which inevitably involved Urbino; but including the period of the fascist dictatorship has left its mark in major cities, especially from the architectural point of view, with: the Elementary School "Giovanni Pascoli" (1932), built on the ancient Garden of Saint Lucia, the restoration of the palace Mauruzi -Gherardi, then the seat of the court, the student's home, to overcome the shortage of housing as a result of the large growth of the university population, public housing for the maimed and disabled civilians and modernization of the municipal water supply. In 1938, the city was designated as the site for the fledgling Superintendency of Galleries and Works of Art of the Marches. With the outbreak of the Second World War the city suffered no bombing, thanks to a conventional sign painted on the roof of the Palazzo Ducale and the tacit agreement between German and allies; only during the retreat, the German army isolated the city with the destruction of the rail and road links. During World War is, to emphasize the important task implementation, by the then Superintendent of the Galleries and Works of Art of the Marches in Urbino Pasquale Rotondi [9], which put in unless some 10,000 works (including those of Giorgione, Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello, Titian, Mantegna, Raphael and many others, from all the great museums of Italy) by requisitions Nazi and destruction of war. These works were initially hidden inside the Palace of the Princes of Carpegna and then be moved to the Fortress of Sassocorvaro. Urbino will be liberated from Nazi occupation August 28, 1944, thanks to the V Corps English, Polish troops and thanks to the action of the partisan groups in the area. Urbino and De Carlo The second half of the twentieth century was characterized in Urbino for the collaboration of the main bodies citizens (University and the City) with the architect Giancarlo De Carlo. This relationship began in 1956 when Carlo Bo, the then rector of the University, De Carlo commissioned the renovation project of building internal Montefeltro - Bonaventure, headquarters of the University. Immediately after the Genoese architect was commissioned by the City of drawing up the General Plan (1958 - 1964) aimed at the recovery of the historical center, pouring some time now in poor condition and in danger of losing several neighborhoods including the Palazzo Ducale for subsidence of the underlying soil, composed of tufa stone and by high concentrations of water; this problem was solved thanks to state funding derived from two special laws enacted for the city (in 1968 and 1982). Subsequently De Carlo realized several projects for the university city including the colleges, near the church of the Capuchins outside the center, an interesting example of how architecture can merge with the surrounding landscape; while projects: construction of the Faculty of Education (1968 - 1976), restructuring of the Faculty of Law (1966 - 1968) and the palace Battiferri (1986 - 1999), Faculty of Economics, are three significant examples from the 'insertion of a contemporary architecture in an old fabric. The seventies were marked by collaboration with the Municipality for the construction of the project called Operation Mercatale (1969 - 1972), which included the construction of a multi-storey underground car park in the square of Mercatale (under Torricini famous Doge's Palace) and the restoration of the Ramp helical Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1971 - 1975); always from the collaboration with the City developed the renovation project of the Teatro Sanzio (1977 - 1982) and the restoration project, much discussed, the ancient Ducal Stables (whose works are still in progress). Moreover, thanks to the close relationship with De Carlo, the city has hosted twice (1976 - 1981, 1992 - 1993) laboratories ILAUD, founded and directed by the Genoese architect. One of the last interventions decarliani was the preparation, between 1989 and 1994, the New General Plan.
