Radio RSA, La Voz de Sudáfrica
Radio RSA, La Voz de Sudáfrica, fue el nombre del servicio de radiodifusión internacional por Ondas Cortas de la República
de Sudáfrica. Funcionó bajo la égida de la South African Broadcasting Corporation desde su inauguración el 1º de mayo de
1966 hasta el año1992, tras el fin de la era del apartheid.
Radio RSA trasmitió noticias e información, así como programas de opinión, a menudo de carácter propagandista a favor de
su régimen de gobierno segregacionista y demonizando a sus oponentes como elAfrican National Congress. Radio RSA,
como parte de la South African Broadcasting Corporation, fue originariamente parte delDepartment of Information, que fue
creado después de la victoria, en 1948 del National Party. La tarea del Department of Information era la de también,
irónicamente, promover la imagen de Sudáfrica a nivel internacional y reducir las críticas al régimen del apartheid. A fines
de los 70s, el Departamento de Asuntos Extranjerostomó el control de Radio RSA. En 1976, Radio RSA trasmitía 36 horas
en la semana, en 12 idiomas: inglés, francés, portugués, afrikaans, y lenguas vernáculas, como el swahili y el chichewa,
entre otras. (¹)
Los estudios se ubicaron primero en Pretoria, y más tarde en Johannesburgo, con trasmisores localizados
en Meyerton.
Para el escucha de Onda Corta, el atractivo de su escucha era más que nada, captar un país de un continente
exótico, con buena señal (trasmisores de 250 KW), si las antenas estaban orientadas a la zona geográfica del
receptor. Encontrarla en el dial era uninstante de placer auditivo gracias a una de las más bonitas señales de
intervalo de la historia de la radiodifusión internacional en Ondas Cortas.
La emisora enviaba a sus oyentes una revista de programación, llamada “RSA Calling”, con detalles de su
programación para cada lengua o servicio de emisión, con notas y artículos reflejando aspectos del país,
fotografías de sus presentadores, y una columna dedicada a los entusiastas de la Onda Corta, con artículos
breves sobre el hobby del Diexismo.
En los 80s se inauguró el Servicio en Castellano, con el asesoramiento, para su creación, del
locutor y periodista Ronald Todman, inglés de nacimiento y que radicó en Argentina en 1947.
Todman había trabajado en la BBC de Londres en los 50 y luego enLa Voz de América. En 1981
viajó a Sudáfrica. La emisión diaria era escuchada con excelente señal en el Río de la Plata.
Otro de sus integrantes fue un uruguayo: Carlos Pravia. Condujo, entre otros, elprograma DXista de
la emisora, “Rincón DX”, que fue muy popular entre los aficionados a la Onda Corta de Sudamérica.

Con el nuevo régimen de gobierno, el servicio fue denominado como Channel Africa, a partir del 1º
de octubre de 1992. Se disminuyó su presencia en la Onda Corta, pues la potencia con que se
recibía en Sudamérica y el número de frecuencias disminuyó en el decorrer de los últimos años. El
Servicio en Castellano fue suprimido. También la bonita canción pasó al recuerdo, aunque
el Bokmakierie continuó trinando, en una nueva versión, en su señal de identificación.

Radio Zorrilla de San Martin
Esta emisora se encuentra en la Republica Oriental del Uruguay, en el Departamento de Tacuarembo,
que esta a una distancia de 390 kilometros por ruta de la capital del país Montevideo. En los años
previos a su inauguración entre los años 1936 a 1938, contarles algo.
En abril de 1936, en una visita a una emisora instalada en una casa de familia en la ciudad de
Florida, el fundador de Radio Zorrilla, Don Luis Santos Dini, tuvo la idea de instalar una emisora en la
ciudad de Tacuarembó; pensando principalmente en comunicar a las zonas de nuestro departamento
más alejadas de la ciudad, como Tambores, Curtina y Caraguatá. El 18 de diciembre de 1937, Luis
Santos firma la solicitud para una onda de Amplitud Modulada (AM) ante Radiocomunicaciones.
En 1938, su amigo Ramón Bettini contacta a los técnicos Dreier y Bocage en la ciudad de
Montevideo, para la construcción del primer transmisor; que no podia ser importado debido a los
altos costos. A su vez, en Tacuarembó, Luis Santos realizaba la búsqueda de un terreno para esos
equipos y de las personas que lo ayudarian en la parte artística de la emisora. El 16 de Setiembre de
1939, luego de recibir la autorización por parte de Radiocomunicaciones y habiendo realizado 322
horas de transmisiones experimentales, su fundador, el Químico Luis Santos Dini, pone al aire la
primera estación de AM del departamento. Esta llevaría el nombre de "CW 46, Difusora Juan Zorrilla
de San Martín" en honor al poeta de la patria.
Sus estudios estaban ubicados en la calle 18 de Julio No 308 y se transmitian 3 horas diarias -de 11
a 13hrs. y de 20 a 21hrs local.- en el 1470 Khz del dial, compartiendo esta frecuencia con una
emisora de Canelones CW46. Actualmente esta emitiendo por los 1400 Khz. Su primer transmisor,
de tan solo 200 watios y su primera antena, de 27 metros y medio (1/8 de onda) estaban ubicados
en el barrio Reggi y, aún con su poca potencia, debido a la casi nula interferencia de aquel tiempo,
eran suficientes para cubrir todo el departamento. En marzo de 1940, se realiza el primer “Concurso
Departamental de Canto”, que contó con la participación de 56 concursantes y culminó en una gran
final en los salones del Club Democrático.
En el mismo año se organizaron también, un concurso de “Recitados para Niños” y dos de
“Composiciones Patrióticas”. Finalmente, en setiembre de ese año, se llevo a cabo en el “Teatro
Uruguay” (hoy conocido como “Teatro Escayola”), el primer aniversario de la emisora. Al año
siguiente, se festejó el segundo aniversario en el mismo “Teatro Uruguay”. Este se extendió durante
dos noches y participaron artistas de toda la región norte del país, de los departamentos Paysandú,
Artigas, Rivera y Paso de los Toros, contándose además con la presencia de personalidades como el
Ministro de Gran Bretaña. De estas jornadas surgieron artistas y grupos que luego realizaron giras por
la capital de nuestro país y diversos lugares del interior. Con su cuarto aniversario, llega la
inauguración del primer "Estudio Auditorio" de la emisora. Dicho auditorio estaba ubicado en la
calle 18 de Julio No 244, donde actualmente se encuentra el canal local de T.V. (Canal 7), y permitía
que más de 120 personas pudieran apreciar en directo la "magia" de la radio. Durante los años
1948 y 1949 y por iniciativa del Dr. Luis Alberto Magnone, quien fuera médico tisiólogo de lo que se
denominaba el Pabellón de Bacilares del Hospital de Tacuarembó, se realizó a través de Radio
Zorrilla de San Martín, una campaña para comprar un equipo de Abreugrafía para nuestro Hospital.
Este equipo permitía detectar la tuberculosis precozmente y finalmente se logró que nuestro hospital
contara con dicho equipo.
En 1948 se adquiere a la nueva sociedad de Radio Sarandí de Montevideo, anteriormente
denominada Radio Jackson, una torre de 56 metros de longitud (1/4 de onda), que es instalada en la
planta emisora como mástil irradiante. Durante el año 1959, se vivieron en todo el departamento,
grandes inundaciones. La ciudad de Paso de los Toros tuvo que ser evacuada ante el temor de la
rotura de su represa y Radio Zorrilla fue factor fundamental en la organización de dichas
evacuaciones, así como también en el reencuentro de muchas familias afectadas.
El 19 de junio del año 1960 se crea la Cooperativa de Radioemisores del Interior conocida hasta el
dia de hoy como CORI, de la cual Radio Zorrilla pasa a formar parte como socio fundador.
Actualmente la cooperativa reúne a mas de cuarenta emisoras de todo el interior de nuestro país;
logrando así, junto a Radio Montecarlo CX 20 de Montevideo una gran cobertura del acontecer del
Uruguay.
En el año 1962 hasta ese entonces "CW 46 Difusora Juan Zorrilla de San Martín" pasa a
denominarse "CX 140 Radio Zorrilla de San Martín" En 1963 se adquiere un moderno "Teletipo"
que permitia recibir, en cuestión de minutos, las noticias mundiales que emitia la cadena France
Presse desde Paris y en español desde Perú1. Fue gracias a este "Teletipo" que noticias como la
muerte de John F. Kennedy y del Papa Juan XXIII, en 1963, fueron anunciadas por Radio Zorrilla antes
de que lo hicieran los grandes medios de la capital de nuestro país. En el año 166 Se reemplaza el
mástil irradiante de un cuarto de onda (56 metros de longitud), por otro de media onda (107 metros
de longitud), complementado con un plano de tierra de 90 radiales de cinta de cobre. Este último
mástil permitía triplicar la potencia irradiada. En aquel entonces, solamente tres emisoras del
Uruguay contaban con un mástil de media onda. Estas eran: Radio Carve, El Sodre (ambas de la
capital del país) y Radio Zorrilla. En los años posteriores se realiza la compra de un transmisor CRUL

de la "Compañía Radioeléctrica Uruguaya".
El mismo contaba con una potencia máxima de 10 kiloWatts y fue utilizado, de forma alternada con
otros transmisores, hasta fines de la década de los 90. En el año 1975 Luis S. Dini, fundador de la
emisora, recibe el premio "San Gabriel" en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dicho premio
destaca la Solidaridad de los Medios de Comunicación. En el año 1977 El 8 de Febrero, un tornado
derriba la antena de media onda que se encontraba en funcionamiento y que había sido instalada en
1966. Esta antena fue luego suplantada por una similar, también de media onda (de 112 metros de
longitud), fabricada en duraluminio y asentada sobre una base de cemento con un aislador de cuarzo.
En el año 1980 en setiembre se realiza la compra de un transmisor de la marca "Harris Corporation"
de procedencia Norteamericana. El mismo cuenta con una potencia máxima de 50 kiloWatts. En el
momento de su compra, singificó el pasaje de la emisora de los transmisores de "válvulas de vacio"
hacia una tecnología más moderna de válvulas de "estado sólido".
En el año 1994, con el asesoramiento del técnico José Luis Oberti, se comienzan a utilizar las
computadoras en los estudios de Radio Zorrilla para realizar algunas tareas específicas1. Para esto se
adquirió el software "Audicom II" de la empresa argentina Solidyne, junto con las placas de hardware
de la misma empresa. Este software funcionaba bajo el sistema operativo DOS. Más adelante se
adquirió la versión "Audicom 5" de la misma empresa, que funcionaba bajo el sistema operativo
Windows. Uno de los grandes beneficios que trajo la implementación de este software, fue que
permitia "armar" los avisos publicitarios de manera mucho más sencilla que con el anterior sistema.
Previo a su implementación, los avisos publicitarios se grababan en una cinta magnética y el proceso
requería prácticamente de un día entero y de varias personas presentes. Además, si durante la
semana se deseaba añadir o modificar un aviso, el proceso era muy complicado, contrario a lo que
sucede hoy en día con las computadoras donde añadir, quitar y modificar es una tarea sencilla. En el
año 1999 en enero, una tormenta con rachas de vientos muy fuertes, derriba nuevamente el mástil de
media onda que se encontraba en funcionamiento en ese momento, y que había sido instalado en el
año 1977.
Dicho mástil fue luego suplantado por una antena de tipo "Monopolo Plegado", siendo la que
actualmente se encuentra en uso. En el año 2004 se realiza la compra de un transmisor de la marca
"Adema" de procedencia Argentina, con una potencia máxima de 10 kiloWatts. Este está construido
completamente con tecnología de semiconductores; contrario a los anteriores transmisores, que
utilizaban válvulas para su funcionamiento. Cuenta además con la posibilidad de adaptarlo a la radio
digital que próximamente se instaurará en nuestro país. Constantemente llegan a radio Zorrilla cartas
de radioaficionados de diversas partes del mundo indicando que han logrado sintonizarla. En dichas
cartas envian las grabaciones que han efectuado como prueba de la recepción, así como también
distintivos de su estación de radioaficionados e información de su país. Como contraparte, la emisora
envía una "tarjeta QSL", en la que indica que efectivamente han logrado sintonizarlos, y alguna
información de nuestro departamento y de la emisora.

Emisora de FM de la base militar uruguaya en Goma (Rep. Dem, Congo)
Con Luis Neim Argain, creador, productor y locutor de “La Positiva”, emisora de FM de la
base militar uruguaya en Goma. La base "Uruguay Presente", situada en la ciudad
congolesa de Goma, es la mayor de las que Uruguay posee en ese país africano, y sede del
batallón URUBATT allí desplegado. Durante la reciente visita que un grupo de periodistas
realizamos a esa y otras bases, quien esto escribe se levantó una mañana -temprano, para
no desentonar con los marciales horarios de los anfitriones- y salió de su CORIMEC
(alojamiento prefabricado) en busca de la zona de duchas. De camino, en un patio donde
unos bancos y un quincho conformaban un área de recreo, un pequeño grupo de oficiales
escuchaba la radio con atención. Desde el aparato, una voz inconfundiblemente uruguaya
refería, con claridad y un toque de humor, a los hechos que habían sido noticia en Uruguay
durante las últimas horas.
Convencido de que se trataba de una emisora del paisito, este cronista paró la oreja en
procura de identificarla, cuando la siguiente frase: "Muchachos, hoy es un día más, y
también un día menos ¡Ya nos vamos!", puso en evidencia el hecho de que se trataba de
una emisión interna, cuyo locutor -al igual que la mayoría de los efectivos de la baseaguardaba con impaciencia su turno en el relevo que ya había comenzado. El
"broadcaster", todo un fenómeno de popularidad entre las cerca de 800 almas alojadas en
la base, era el Soldado de Primera Luis Alberto Neim Argain, un joven de 24 años oriundo
de Salto, y dos veces al día se encargaba de compartir unas horas de información, música y
comunicación entre sus compañeros. En su ciudad natal, Luis trabajó en radio, aunque el
panorama allí no resultaba demasiado halagüeño. En diálogo con Montevideo Portal,
cuenta que se unió al ejército en abril de 2012, luego de trasladarse a Montevideo en busca
de empleo fijo.Debido a sus conocimientos técnicos sobre sonido y su experiencia radial, su
destino más que cantado fue el Batallón Florida, Unidad custodia y protocolar exclusiva del
Poder Legislativo. Poco después, Luis se presentó para ser tenido en cuenta como voluntario
en las Misiones de Paz de las que participa el Ejército Uruguayo. "La plata era buena y había
que hacer la casa", explica. Así, el 14 de agosto de 2013 puso pie en tierras congolesas.
La voz de la montaña
Durante su tiempo de misión, Luis pasó cuatro meses en la base que los uruguayos tenían
en Mpati, y que posteriormente fuera desmovilizada. En esa zona de montañas, tuvo la idea
de crear un noticiero con información uruguaya, destinado al personal de la base.
Autorizado por sus superiores, el joven chequeaba a diario los websites noticiosos de
Uruguay, grababa y editaba sus contenidos "que luego eran transmitidos por los
altoparlantes de la base", cuenta. Estos envíos informativos llegaron a oídos del teniente
Fabián Gordiola, uno de los responsables del área de comunicaciones del contingente uruguayo. Por su intermedio, cuando Luis regresó a Goma
tuvo libre acceso a la radio allí existente, una emisora sencilla "que pasaba música todo el día, pero nada más". En manos de Luis, la radio
comenzó a ofrecer un repertorio musical más diverso, así como contenidos de interés general, horóscopos y noticias. Y pese a funcionar dentro de
una base militar y estar sujeta a sus normas, Luis asegura que el contenido de sus informativos nunca fue sometido a censura previa o posterior. "Se
puede dar cualquier noticia, pero sin emitir opinión", detalla.

Radio Uruguay FM 106.7 Goma RDC funciona desde un container situado junto a la Plaza de Armas de la base. Su alcance es de unos 5 kilómetros,
cifra más que suficiente para cubrir el perímetro del establecimiento militar. Y para sorpresa de Luis, le ha permitido ganar oyentes en las
inmediaciones. "La escucha gente local, hispanos, latinoamericanos que viven acá porque trabajan para ONU", cuenta Luis, recordando que
muchos de estos oyentes "colaterales" le han escrito, explicando que para ellos la emisora constituye una muy buena ocasión de acceder a
contenidos interesantes en su propia lengua. Además, la radio comenzó luego a transmitir vía web, ofreciendo así la posibilidad de que los
uruguayos desplegados en bases más remotas pudieran escucharla. Esta experiencia tuvo resultados tan dispares como la calidad del servicio de
Internet en esos parajes. Sin embargo, la opción web tuvo aceptación en Uruguay, donde familiares y amigos de los efectivos en misión la elegían
como una forma de estar más cerca de sus seres queridos.
Nuevo tiempo
El pasado sábado 21 de junio, Luis abordó el último vuelo del relevo de este año, y en la madrugada del domingo arribó a Montevideo. Y tal como lo
tenía previsto, nada más desempacar se puso a hacer su casa. La FM 106.7 quedó allá, dentro de su container en Goma. Sin duda, alguno de los
militares entrantes tomará el testigo dejado por Luis quien, a miles de kilómetros de su casa, supo ser una voz de aliento para sus camaradas. Una
voz que aportara información, entretenimiento y emociones.

Suarez): Bueno únicamente dejar una aclaración, en cada base militar en el exterior hay FM, creo que hoy en dia
(Ruben Walter Suarez):
son 6, Tres en el Congo y tres en Haiti. La nota es que es manejado por personal del Arma de Comunicaciones del Ejército, bajo la supervisión de la
Briagada de Comunicaciones Nº 1, y en las mayorías de las veces únicamente se nos permite pasar música y los encuentros de futbol mas
trancendentes, hoy aun hay conflictos con no pasar ciertas canciones por que son de izquierda, pero bueno, no quiero empañar esta nota que la
verdad esta muy bien, aunque no se conozca en un 100% de la realidad.

Prezados. Tendo em vista as interferências que vem através da linha de energia AC e que atingem o equipamento de radio (receptor ou transmissor),
causando interferências indesejáveis, fiz uma artigo a respeito da construção de um Filtro de Linha. Este e outros filtros de linha também evita a
propagação de radiofrequência do equipamento a ele ligado (rádios, motores etc.) para a rede de energia, que funcionaria como uma antena,
irradiando a interferência. O circuito foi retirado de uma antigo Radio Amateur Handbook, ao qual incorporei tres varistores, cuja função é cortar os
picos de tensão que vem da rede de energia elétrica, de modo a proteger o equipamento a ele ligado.
E trabalhava no norte de Goiás, numa região rural, onde a incidência de raios (descargas atmosféricas) era grande, com a queima de vários
equipamentos ligados a rede de energia. Depois que fiz uns 20 destes Filtros de Linha, houve uma diminuição dos estragos.
Os componentes dão de fácil aquisição em com uma certa habilidade manual não fica difícil o entusiasta do radio fabricar um deste filtro.
Gostaria de ter um retorno dos colegas que o construírem, se cessaram ou não as interferências. Pode haver interferência vinda diretamente pela
antena do equipamento, para a qual este filtro não atua. O hobby do radio (radioescuta ou radioamadorismo) e uma eterna pesquisa.

MONTAGEM:

bobinas foram montadas sobre um tubo de PVC, destes utilizados para rede de água, com diâmetro de 2,5 cm, As espiras são enroladas
juntas, sem espaçamento.. Num mesmo pedaço de tubo, com 23 cm de comprimento, foram enroladas duas espiras, com sentidos de
enrolamentos contrários. As extremidades dos tubos foram tamponadas com epóxi, de modo a servirem para fixar estes tubos com
parafusos de rosca soberba na caixa de alumínio.

extremidades dos capacitores e dos varistores foram soldadas a um pedaço de fio de cobre e este ligado a caixa de alumínio, através de um
parafuso de rosca reta, porca e arruela.

alumínio pode ficar energizada e causar choque.

Per HFCC, the A-14 season began with the 0400-0559 transmission (along with R. Tamazuj during the first 29 minutes) as via UAE, but for some

weeks now, it`s been shown as MADAGASCAR. That makes more sense propagationally to here, as other ME signals are absent on 19m except for a
trace of 15170 which could be Saudi.
Current HFCC as of June 26 shows no more UAE site at all for these services, just MDC or SMG = Vatican, with a phony start date of 30 March:
0400-0557 15550 MDC, 11650 SMG
1500-1627 15150 MDC, 15550 SMG
It seems big changes are coming 1 July, with these new transmissions for MDG PNW FPU:

These three are also `Àpd`` in the language column, whatever that means, Arabic-something, but the CIRAF zone has been changed to 48SW only
= South Sudan and Uganda. All the other transmissions above have been for 39SW,47E,48W = Yemen, and all of Sudan. Yemen??
It remains to be heard whether the old transmissions are being replaced by the new ones, which seems more likely, or the new ones are in addition.
Judging from the 0400 and 1500 timings, the new ones may be only R. Tamazuj, but what about 0500? If still Dabanga, it`s much reduced. Or could

Problema com Tecsun PL-660
Boa Tarde Lista. Tenho um TECSUN PL-660, e começou a dar um problema, gostaria de saber se alguém passou por isso ou se é configuração.
A Pilha dele é recarregavel, ontem ela começou a piscar como carga baixa. Ao colocar na tomada, o icone da Pilha mostra todas as barras
(supostamente que esta carregando), mas mesmo após 1h na tomada a pilha não carregou.
Antes no lugar do Relógio, mostrava o tempo que estava carregando, agora não mostra, fica apenas piscando o "alarme". Alguém sabe se é
configuração? ou é algum problema mesmo?
Ahh, já verifiquei se esta ativo o modo de carregar a pilha e esta em ON ou seja, ligado.

Ivo, I have one question: One unidentified Middle East/South Asian station is on 11760 with awful modulation/audio during the evenings at 17002000 at least, and at other time, maybe even 24 hours. Their transmitter is faulty and their wide signal is between 11750 and 11770 kHz. Do you
have any info about it? Looks like as R Karabakh on 9677, or faulty Egyptian transmitter, etc. Thanks! (Timofeyev).

Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces the release of the third QSL card in the series highlighting the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) transmitter
sites used for RFA programming. RFA programs broadcast from the following IBB sites: Biblis, Iranawila, Kuwait, Lampertheim, Saipan and Tinian.
IBB's Iranawila transmitter site in Sri Lanka is equipped with four 500 kW and three 250 kW transmitters. All seven of these transmitters broadcast

Primeira experiencia com o dongle rtl e o sdr sharp
Comprei um dongle igual a esse aqui (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2CZnAiH3HE&list=UUFJIgqL5eP1eBa0F4Nr-uhg ) e instalei o sdr sharp
no meu notebook windows 8.1.
Esse dongle possui duas entradas uma para a faixa de 0 a 24 mhz e outra para 24 a 1700 mhz. Utilizo a antena 1/4 de onda VHF da Aquario
acomplada ao dongle por um ligação de 50 ohms na ligação de 24 a 1700 mhz.Minha esperança era ouvir muitas coisas entre 40 mhz e 1700 mhz
de vhf e uhf porém só consegui ouvir rádios e áudios de canais de tvs analogica.
Nem aviação eu consigo ouvir.
Para se ter uma ideia no momento em que consigo captar algo de aviação no meu tecsun pl 660 com a propria antena do tecsun , na mesma
frequencia no sdr sharp não tem nada ou tem apenas uma linha laranja.
Aliás os áudios de tv estão presentes em toda a faixa de 40 a 1700 mhz inudando o espectro, desconfio que não seja simplesmente harmonicos
mas o próprio dongle não consegue barrar essas frequencias dentro do chipset porque são de intensidade muito fortes.A única coisa diferente que
achei um dia desses foi uma baba eletronica em 49 mhz.
O SDR Sharp possui modulações AM, WFM , NFM , DSB, USB, LSB, CW-L e CW-U. Quando eu verifico algum sinal chegando(aquela faixa/linha
vermelha) coloco o vfo lá e vou tentando todas as modulações disponíveis porém sem sucesso na escuta (som ininteligivel).
Estou fazendo algo errado ?
O que eu faço para tentar captar outras coisas interessantes no sdr sharp via esse dongle ?
O problema é a antena que eu uso ?
Até agora na faixa do VHF/UHF estou frustrado com o que consegui capturar.

for the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
Facts and Figures on Shortwave Broadcast Reductions
June 30, 2014
U.S. international media must optimize program delivery by market. We are ending some shortwave transmissions. We continue shortwave to those
countries where these transmissions are still reaching significant audiences or where there are no reasonable alternative platforms at a lower cost to
the BBG.
The shortwave reductions will save U.S. taxpayers almost $1.6 million annually.
There are no reductions in staff or programming – these are transmission platform reductions only. Programming continues to be available through
other media.
Shortwave transmissions continue in many languages including to key shortwave markets like North Korea, Nigeria, Somalia, Horn of Africa, and
elsewhere. (List enclosed below). Transmissions also continue on other platforms including AM, FM, TV and online.
VOA Azerbaijani
Cuts: 30 minutes SW
Continuing Distribution: Satellite TV (HotBird)and satellite audio (TurkSat); Multimedia web and mobile sites & social media

SW is used by just 2% of adults weekly in Azerbaijan, and does not yield significant audiences for the service (0.4% weekly reach on radio in BBG’s
most recent survey). By contrast, satellite dish ownership is widespread, at 56%, and 18% use the Internet weekly. The service has both satellite and
online products, which are far more likely to reach audiences in Azerbaijan.
VOA Bangla
Cuts: 1 hour SW
Continuing Distribution: 1 hour MW(AM); FM and TV affiliates; Multimedia web and mobile sites; Social media
SW is not widely used in Bangladesh (just 2% weekly), and the majority of the service’s audience comes to its programming via FM and TV affiliate
networks in the country.
VOA English (in Asia)
Cuts: 6.5 hours SW (2 hours of programming that was repeated)
Continuing Distribution: Some MW; Multimedia web and mobile sites & social media
Outside of sub-Saharan Africa, English speakers are rarely users of shortwave radio. They are more likely to be educated and affluent, and to have
access to a broad range of media. Years of BBG research questions on consumption of VOA English on shortwave have failed to find any significant
audiences outside Africa, in large part because usage of shortwave radio in other regions is mostly very low.
VOA Lao
Cuts: 30 minutes SW
Continuing Distribution: 30 minutes MW; 7 affiliates in Thailand on Lao border, with reach into Laos; Multimedia web and mobile sites; Social media
SW is very little-used in Laos – less than 1% of adults report listening to SW radio weekly. In BBG’s most recent research in Laos, no surveyed
listeners reported using the SW band to access VOA content. A strong majority (66%) hear VOA on FM, through affiliate stations on the Thai border
that carry VOA content (Laos is so small that border FM stations have decent penetration into the country).
VOA Special/Learning English
Cuts: 5.5 hours SW
Continuing Distribution: Learning English programs continue on SW on English to Africa. 30 minutes MW; Multimedia web and mobile sites, including
special interactive teaching products; Social media, including social English lessons
BBG audience research indicates strong interest in learning English, but very limited shortwave listenership to VOA Learning English, outside a few
select markets. The service is working more closely with other VOA language services to create English learning products for distribution on more
popular channels. And Learning English offers a variety of digital products that are increasingly popular, including a Skype call-in show, videos on
YouTube, and a website featuring both audio and transcripts for online audiences to follow as they listen.
VOA Special/Learning English

Persian stream; 24 hours daily satellite audio with slate plus 24 hour Audio on 4 other satellites including Hotbird, the most popular satellite in Iran;
Multimedia website (with circumvention tools deployed); Social media; mobile app with anti-censorship proxy server capability built-in.
This is only a reduction to the number of simultaneous frequencies during some of the broadcast day. SW radio, with 5% weekly use in 2012, is
considerably less popular than other platforms on which audiences can access Farda content, such as MW (10% weekly use), satellite television
(26% own a dish, and 33% watch satellite television weekly) or the internet (39% weekly use).
RFA Lao
Cuts: 2 hours SW
Continuing Distribution: 5 FM radio affiliates in Thailand provide cross-border coverage; Multimedia web & mobile sites; Social media

Beginner's Classroom For August 2014
Software for the Radio Listener
I've been spending some time trolling the Internet (I don't surf... I'm not that good at keeping my balance), and I've come across a few pieces of
software that may interest the SW and MW hobbyist. There is a myriad of software packages available for ham radio operators, but in this Classroom
I'd like to focus on those for the radio listener.
RADIO EXPLORER is a software program designed by Dmitry Nefedov. The basic configuration of the software is an extensive combination of
chart/spreadsheet/map, designed to assist the shortwave listener in his/her quest for stations, frequencies and the like. Different modes allow for
varied gathering of information.
The Stations view offers a combination chart/spreadsheet look at stations, when they are on air, and at which frequencies they are operating. The
look in this view is similar to our own World English Survey. The MiniMUF view is a curved chart showing an individual frequency and station, when
they are broadcasting, and when it is best to hear them. There is a map view that allows you to choose a location and see the MUF (Maximum Usable
Frequency) for that location, and when best to listen. There is also a print mode and an extensive help section to assist you in your use of the program
while listening to the bands.
The Radio Explorer website is located at www.radioexplorer.com.ru/en, and the current version is 2.7.7.
DXtreme RECEPTION LOG SOFTWARE is one of the two DXtreme packages offered by Bob Raymond, NE1I. I have spoken about DXtreme previously in
my Helping Hand Column. Bob also offers an amateur radio logging software package. This listener's logging software has just been
updated, and the current version is 9.0 . You can access information for the software at www.dxtreme.com.
There are many facets to this logging program. In the Schedule Checker, you can check the Aoki, EiBi and FCC MW broadcasting schedules. The DX
Atlas view allows you to check and perform azimuth plots to and from your location to a specific broadcaster. There is a Reception Log window which
allows you to keep a detailed log of stations heard. You can prepare and print SWL and Address Labels straight from the program to your printer. One
of the most interesting perks offered by this program is that you can use either the Schedule Checker or Reception Log area to directly tune your
receiver to a specific station. This and so much more is available with the newest version of DXtreme Reception Log.
The WiNRADiO Communications company offers an alternative to the traditional straight hardware receiver. WiNRADiO offers many types of receivers,
and although there is a hardware piece that looks vaguely like the inside of a traditional radio, much of the work is done by software used in
conjunction with the hardware so you can listen directly from your computer.
WiNRADiO's website is located at www.winradio.com. One of their newer receivers is the WR-G33DDC Excalibur Pro. It covers from 9 to 49 995 kHz in
various modes with selectable bandwidths. To see a complete overview of the Excalibur Pro complete with software that is available for the receiver,
go to www.winradio.com/home/g33ddc.htm. For MW radio, you can download the current version of WiNRADiO (3.0) as freeware from
www.fileguru.com/apps/medium_wave_radio.
A webpage entitled DON'S SOFTWARE PAGES includes a number of interesting, free software pieces, some of which are designed with the SWL in
mind. Software items include EasiSWL, a logging program for shortwave; BCLog, a similar logging tool for MW; EasiCQWW, a logging program for the
CQ WW contest.

** CUBA. 6000, UT Wed July 2 at 0537, Arnie is again phoning-in `DXers Unlimited` to RHC studio, i.e. telco-quality audio compared to the canned
open & close, featuring the 6000 English frequency which he explains at 01-05 uses a curtain covering the east coast from northern FL up to the
Canadian Maritimes; at 05-07 switches to antenna toward the Pacific coast of North America, but also reaching Hawaii, Japan, Australia, New
Zealand (here in OK there is not much difference). 5040 is omnidirexional on NVIS (near vertical incidence skywave) dipole antenna, but admits it
also has several low-angle lobes. Arnie hasn`t updated his blog with DXUL scripts since September 29, 2013, where one may skim thru his extremely

** MEXICO. Bits of sporadic E above 54 MHz: nothing during the day on July 1, but snow-patrol on analog 2 set finally gets something July 2, UT:

third year of this Hyde-Jekyll deal: public radio talk in the daytime, indie music at night, and classical banned. Spy alludes to former format of its
commercial competitor in Stillwater, KSPI 93.9/93.7, which lived on the web until KOSU decided to broadcast it and allegedly pull in more financial

HFCC still shows 7355 at 05-06, but starting 110614, until 301014. It was certainly on the air long before 11 June, but maybe some parameter
change was made then. We previously suspected it was only off temporarily due to another power failure at ASC; has anyone noticed other scheduled

** U S A [non]. 11995, July 2 at 0547, VOA Kurdish is still on the air here, fair signal, and at 0548 pronouncing [email protected] address.
Kurdish was on the list of SW services to be cancelled, per a BBGWatch post of June 28, but reprieved? Not on an official Operational Memo dated
June 29 listing all the cuts. 11995 is via VATICAN at 05-06, and successfully airing today unlike my previous log of June 27 when it dumped off at
0500. Ivo Ivanov confirms Kurdish continued July 1-2 via various sites: 05-06 on 11995, 15560, 17870; 14-15 on 15370, 17870; 17-18 on 7365,
9850, 11995; and Noel Green, England also confirms the two 14-15 frequencies.
Kai Ludwig in Germany has just written July 2: ``Hi Glenn, from the work place, in case an analysis is still missing: What has *not* been taken off
shortwave, contrary to BBG Watch June 28, are VOA Kurdish, VOA Bengali, VOA Khmer and RFA Khmer plus any of the RFE/RL transmissions. Last
night I checked for RFE/RL Belarus shortly before 1800, and indeed it was still on both 5930 and 6105, with 6105 being noticeably weaker than the
Lampertheim signal the evening before, consistent with the specified change of the antenna configuration. So the operational memo, issued June 29,
obviously reflects the real situation.
One has to wonder what happened during the last few days. Is it a big bunch of internal disinformation that got reported June 28? Or have "they",
whoever "they" may be (the usual bbg.gov PR, featuring governors meeting in a TV Martí studio etc., appears to be half of the truth at best), changed
their mind again during the weekend? Either way it is beyond me what this has to do with strategic planning at all. It looks like plain management by
chaos. Or was it the result of a panic that they suddenly had to save $$$ somehow?
It is also noteworthy how BBG Watch is meanwhile just one big rage against the machine. One must conclude that this reflects the morale amongst

We've dug deep in the archives and found a fascinating feature from way back in 1961 when the Pacific island of Tonga started up its first radio
station.
The opening ceremony was done by Queen Salote of Tonga, and we have photos of her arriving and speaking at the opening. We also have a photo
inside the main studio, and the studio building, as well as details of the first staff of the Tonga Broadcasting Commission.

Amigos, uma emissora que venho ouvindo por aqui, é a Radio Dardasha. Não sei exatamente de onde ela é e o seu sinal chega relativamente bem
por aqui na frequência de 9.515 kHz, das 20:30 ás 20:45 UTC, em árabe. No site da emissora diz que essa transmissão em 9.515 kHz é para o
Marrocos, Líbia e Algeria. Ontem enviei um informe de recepção a ela com um áudio em anexo. Hoje recebi uma resposta da emissora.

Fiz boas escutas ontem e hoje com a minha Loop Blindada e meu receptor Degen DE1103. Fiz as escutas na edícula nos fundos da minha casa.
Lá tem duas mesas que estão sem as panelas de comida. Nós almoçamos lá na edícula e dpois do almoço, minha mãe deixa as panelas lá mesmo
para guardá-las só a noite. Então acaba não tendo muito espaço para colocar as minhas coisas (receptor, antena, etc). Como eles viajaram, as
mesas estão com mais espaço (sem as panelas de comida). Estou então fazendo as minhas escutas lá na edícula, uma vez que não dá para se usar a
minha Loop Blindada dentro de casa. Ontem estava lá na edícula ouvindo a Radio New Zealand International, 11.725 kHz.
Resolvi levar a Loop Blindada e o Degen DE1103 lá no quarto para usá-los em cima da mesa bem de frente e quase encostada na janela. Lá não foi
possível ouvir a Radio New Zealand International, pois, só o que ouvia era ruídos atmosféricos. Voltando para a edícula (com o Degen DE1103 em
uma mão e a antena na outra, mas conectada ao rádio), resolvi ligar o rádio ao me aproximar da porta da cozinha.
No que fui saindo da casa e me aproximando da entrada da edícula, o sinal da Radio New Zealand International, apareceu, mas voltando um pouco
em direção da casa (na área bem perto da escada da cozinha), o sinal da emissora sumiu. Alguma coisa impede o bom funcionamento da Loop
Blindada dentro de casa. Lá na edícula deixo duas lâmpadas fluorescentes grandes ligadas e a Loop Blindada não chupa nem um ruído das
lâmpadas.
É uma ótima antena.
Ouvi uma emissora em espanhol na frequência de 15.495 kHz, às 19:22 hs UTC. Pareceu-me ser um feeder da Argentina (Radio Nacional da
Argentina). Alguém sabe algo à respeito?
