zu sauberem Trinkwasser. Ungeachtet dessen ist der Umgang
mit Wasser bis heute nicht nachhaltig. Vielerorts ist die Werterhaltung der Infrastruktur kaum gewährleistet, die Wassernutzung oft alles andere als effizient, die Grundwasserspiegel
sinken mehrheitlich und die Wasserqualität ist häufig ungenügend. Zudem mangelt es in vielen Industriestaaten am

Dealing with water
Today, almost 900 million people do not have access to clean
drinking water. Nevertheless, we still have not adopted a
sustainable approach to water. In many places the maintenance
of the infrastructure’s value is barely upheld, use of water is often
anything but efficient, most of the ground-water levels are sinking,
and water quality is frequently inadequate. In addition, in many
industrial nations not enough people are aware that water
is a precious commodity – a precondition for a sustainable
approach to the resource.

Genug Wasser für alle
Für die direkte menschliche Nutzung steht nicht einmal 1 Prozent
der weltweiten Wassermenge zur Verfügung. Denn 97,5 Prozent
sind Salzwasser und weitere 2 Prozent in Schnee und Eis gebunden. Gleichwohl benötigen wir pro Jahr gerade mal ein Drittel
des jeweils nutzbaren Süßwassers. Es ist also genug für alle da.

the world. Thus it is of no use to countries with water shortages, for

Hohe Verluste
Weltweit größter Wassernutzer ist die Landwirtschaft, die 70 Prozent
aller Ressourcen verbraucht. Mehr als die Hälfte davon geht durch
ineffiziente Bewässerung verloren. Die Industrie nutzt 22 Prozent
und in Haushalte fließen 8 Prozent. Gemessen an der gesamten
Wassernutzung spielt der Bedarf der privaten Haushalte damit eine
eher nachrangige Rolle, wenn auch nach Ländern und Regionen sehr
unterschiedlich.

The largest consumer of water worldwide is agriculture – which
accounts for 70 percent of all the resources used. Sadly, more than
half of that volume is lost through inefficient irrigation. Industry
uses 22 percent, while only 8 percent flows into households. In terms
of total water consumption, the level of water required by private
households plays a somewhat secondary role, albeit with great
differences from one country or region to the next.

Unterschiedlicher Durst
Industrieländer verbrauchen pro Kopf mehr Trinkwasser als Schwellenund Entwicklungsländer. Aber auch unter den Industrieländern gibt es
große Unterschiede. So braucht der US-Bürger fast zweieinhalb Mal
soviel wie der Deutsche. Spanien ist mit 265 Litern ebenfalls nicht sehr
sparsam. Ein 18-Loch Golfplatz dort verursacht einen Wasserverbrauch,
der dem einer Kleinstadt von 15.000 Einwohnern entspricht.

Industrial nations consume more drinking water per capita than
emerging and developing nations. Yet there are also major differences between industrial countries. Thus a US citizen uses almost
two and a half times as much as a German. With 265 litres, Spain
likewise has a very high consumption level. An 18 hole golf course
there requires the same amount of water as a small town of
15,000 inhabitants.
