BLACKB E RRY PICKI N G by Natalie Lobe from The Poet’s Cookbook: Recipes from Germany, Poems by 33 American Poets with German Translations I could have stayed on the porch, with a love poem or a daydream. I could have gone to the beach, smeared your back with sunscreen, watched a dolphin, studied your toe print. Gone giddy from choices. Instead, I’m in a tangle of blackberry thorns, reaching for a clump of black nodules so heavy the vine sags. I have to have that one and the one behind even bigger, and those beauties another ten feet into the briars. Every prize comes at a price: lacerated arms, bloody shins, stained fingers, mosquitoes and ticks. I’m a cautious person—comfort is my style, but today I plunge willy-nilly into prickers, pain and itch, FOOD American, Chinese, and German Poetry lured, intractably lured by the vision of my blackberry cobbler bubbling thick juices over a tawny crust, exhaling hot purple smells. Have a taste, let it linger, let’s call it ours. This project is part of the annual “Time Shadows” neighborhood collection. CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT MASON
