Der Sonnenschein belebe dir das Herz, und Gott sei mit dir. The composition May God be with You sets parts of a variety of different Irish benedictions to music. Bringing the human body and spirit into harmony with Nature is seen as a divine blessing. The piece is marked by overarching melodies and it has its own strong dynamics, allowing the choir a sensitive and expressive rubato. In bar 8, all four voices come to rest on one whole note – the flow of the melody seems to stand still. It is at this point that the text finds its expression in the music: it is the prayer for a long life. While the first and second verses make use only of words that radiate very positive feelings, the middle part speaks of the every-day burdens of life. Burdens of the day is repeated in increasingly beseeching tones until the word lightly brings emotional and musical release. The title May God be with You is taken from the final words of the song. The lyrics form an arch spanning the entire piece: not until the end is God, who initially takes the form of raindrops, wind and sun, named as an all encompassing idea standing over everything: May God be with you. Stefan Foidl Die Komposition May God be with You ist eine Vertonung von Teilen unterschiedlicher irischer Segensgebete. Körper und Geist des Menschen mit der Natur in Einklang zu bringen, wird als Gottes Segen gesehen. Dem Stück sind große Bögen und eine starke Dynamik eigen, und dem Chor wird ein gefühlvolles Rubato ermöglicht. In Takt 8 ruhen alle 4 Stimmen auf einer Ganzen Note – der Fluss der Melodie scheint zu erstarren. Hier findet der Text seinen musikalischen Ausdruck: Es geht um die Bitte um langes Leben. Während erste und zweite Strophe nur Worte mit sehr positiver Ausstrahlung verwenden, ist im Mittelteil von den Lasten des Alltags die Rede. Burdens of the day wird immer stärker flehend wiederholt, bis die inhaltliche und auch musikalische Erlösung mit dem Wort lightly erreicht wird. Der Titel May God be with You ist den letzten Worten des Liedtextes entnommen. Inhaltlich findet sich ein Bogen über das gesamte Stück: Gott, der zu Beginn als Regentropfen, Wind und Sonnenschein vorkommt, wird erst zuletzt als ein über allem stehender und alles zusammenfassender Gedanke genannt: Gott möge mit Dir sein. Stefan Foidl Stefan Foidl M.A. studied Applied Composition and Choral Direction at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna. During a year spent studying abroad in Miami, he devoted most of his time and attention to jazz. He was a member of the local Jazz Vocal Ensemble, which in that year was the winner of the Downbeat Award. Stefan Foidl is the director of the Jazz Chor Wien, an ensemble devoted to modern vocal jazz. The choir has performed at numerous festivals, and in 2004 was the winner of the Ward Swingle Award at the VokalTotal festival in Graz. In addition, he directs the gospel and soul group re:spirit, which he personally accompanies on the piano, and is a regular expert participant in workshops. As a composer and arranger, Foidl combines elements of jazz with contemporary music. The large number of performances of his works in Europe, China, South Africa and the USA are convincing evidence of his popularity. Mag. art. Stefan Foidl studierte Angewandte Komposition und Chorleitung an der Wiener Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst. Im Zuge eines Auslandsstudienjahres in Miami setzte er sich intensiv mit Jazz auseinander: Er war Mitglied des dortigen Jazz Vocal Ensemble, das im selben Jahr Träger des Downbeat-Award wurde. Foidl ist Leiter des Jazz Chor Wien, eines Klangkörpers für modernen Vokaljazz. Der Chor trat bei vielen Festivals auf und gewann 2004 den Ward Swingle Award beim Festival VokalTotal in Graz. Er leitet darüber hinaus die Gospel- und Soulformation re:spirit, die er auch selbst am Klavier begleitet, und referiert bei vielen Workshops.
