

Quem são os melhores dribladores do mundo e os melhores
goleadores? Os brasileiros. Portanto, seu futebol é um
futebol de poesia: de fato, todo ele está baseado no drible e
no gol. A troca de passe e a triangulação é um futebol de
prosa: com efeito, está baseado na sintaxe, no jogo coletivo e
organizado - ie na execução racional do código. Seu único
momento poético é o contra-ataque, com a adição do gol.
Definitivamente, o momento poético do futebol parece ser
o momento individualista (drible e gol; o passe inspirado).
O futebol em prosa é o do chamado sistema (o futebol
europeu). O futebol poético é o futebol latino-americano.
Seu esquema, para ser consumado, deve requerer uma
capacidade monstruosa de driblar (algo que na Europa é
repudiado em nome da “prosa coletiva”). Se o drible e o gol
são os momentos individualistas-poéticos do futebol, é por
isso que o futebol brasileiro é um futebol de poesia. Sem
fazer diferença de valor, mas em sentido puramente
técnico, no México a prosa estetizante italiana foi vencida
pela poesia brasileira.

The Middle Ages: Mob football
Various ball games emerged in Britain between the
7th and 9th century. These are mostly referred to
as mob football. The game was explicitly violent
and played between villages at the time of
celebration and festivity.
There are written records of unfortunate and
even fatal incidents that occurred during mob
football matches. By the 17th century, Carew of
Cornwall tried to introduce some sense in his
Survey of Cornwall by prohibiting the charging of
players below the girdle and disallowing the
forward pass. These rules however, were not
widely used and violence continued to relish.

Mob football was so popular in England that even
Shakespeare mentions it in his Comedy of Errors (circa 1594):
“Am I so round with you, as you with me,

ORIGINS OF THE SPORT
The Laws of the Game were first drafted by
members of the Cambridge University Football
Club on Parker's Piece, Cambridge in 1848, and
adopted by the Football Association in 1863.
"They embrace the true principles of the game,
with the greatest simplicity" (E. C. Morley, F.A.
Hon. Sec. 1863) These laws are written and
maintained by the International Football
Association Board and published by the sport's
governing body FIFA.

On the eve of Brazil’s opening game at the 1958 FIFA
World Cup in Sweden the journalist, writer and
playwright Nelson Rodrigues made an interesting
observation on Brazilian nationhood in his column for
the magazine Manchete Esportiva. It was his belief
that in the wake of the shock defeat to Uruguay at
the 1950 world finals, the so-called Maracanazo, the
country had succumbed to what he termed a
“mongrel complex”, the unshakeable belief that
Brazil was inferior to the rest of the world.
“(…) The national team’s problem isn’t about football
any more, or technique or tactics. It’s problem is selfbelief. Brazilians must convince themselves that they
are not mongrels and that they have more than
enough ability to go to Suécia and succeed. To be or
not to be a mongrel: that is the question for the
national team.”
