Background
In an effort to improve cycling conditions in Toronto's downtown
west end, the "West End Bikeways" cycling network planning project was launched in the fall of 2008.
The goal was to talk to local area residents, and use local knowledge to identify cycling routes for
infrastructure projects that could be completed in 2009 and 2010.
In May 2008 and August 5, 2009 Toronto City Council approved the installation of a "contra flow"
bicycle lane on Shaw Street, from Dundas Street West to Harbord Street, and from Barton Avenue
to Dupont Street. In order to create a connected cycling route, shared lane road markings called
"sharrows" would also be installed.

What is a "Contra Flow" Bicycle Lane?
Shaw Street is currently one-way southbound, between
Dundas Street West and Dupont Street. No road users are
permitted to travel northbound on this section of Shaw
Street.
The installation of a "contra flow" bicycle lane will provide
cyclists with a space where they may legally cycle
northbound. Because the "contra-flow" bicycle lane is for
the restricted use of bicycles only, Shaw will become a twoway street for bicycles. Because motor vehicles are not
permitted to drive in the bicycle lane, Shaw street will
continue to be one-way southbound for motorists.
"Contra-flow" bicycle lanes exist in many
neighbourhoods in Toronto. An example
of an installed west-end "contra-flow"
bicycle lane that is in use is on Montrose Avenue,
between Harbord Street and Bloor Street West.
A "contra flow" bicycle lane, will make Shaw St.
a 2-way street for bicycles
between Dundas St. W and Dupont St.
What is a "Sharrow"?
"Sharrow" markings are used in shared lanes to indicate the
ideal cyclist position in the lane (away from the curb and
parked cars) and to remind drivers to share the road.
Sharrows are marked on the roadway with two white
chevrons and a bicycle symbol. Sharrows do not include a
diamond symbol. The diamond marking for "reserved
lanes" is used in bicycle lanes.
Parking on Shaw Street
The installation of bicycle lanes and sharrows on Shaw St.
will not affect the number of on-street parking spots
available.
Where a contra-flow bicycle lane is being installed, between
Dundas St. West and Dupont St permit parking must be
maintained on one side of the street, and will no longer "flip"
