INVITATION TO THE OFFICIAL PRESS CONFERENCE
Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country
German Pavilion at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition 2016 – La Biennale di
Venezia
Friday, May 27, 2016, 11 a.m.
German Pavilion, Giardini della Biennale di Venezia
The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) is curating the German Pavilion exhibition, Making Heimat.
Germany, Arrival Country at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale – La Biennale di Venezia in 2016. General
Commissioner and Director of DAM Peter Cachola Schmal, DAM Curator Oliver Elser and Project Coordinator Anna
Scheuermann will be responsible for the German contribution.
The exhibition Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country consists of three parts: the first part shows refugee
shelters, meaning the actual solutions built during the current state of emergency. The second part questions what
conditions must be in place in an Arrival City in order to turn refugees into immigrants. The third part of the
exhibition is the spatial design concept for the German Pavilion, which makes a statement about the current political
situation. The architectural presentation and graphic design for this part are being planned and realized by Something
Fantastic.
In March, DAM launched an online database with the architecture magazine Bauwelt that documents buildings
currently used for housing refugees. www.makingheimat.de
The accompanying catalogue will be published by Hatje Cantz with essays from Doug Saunders, Jürgen Friedrichs,
Stefan Rettich, Amber Sayah, Marietta Schwarz, Walter Siebel, Peter Cachola Schmal, Oliver Elser, Anna
Scheuermann and more. The catalogue will also feature interviews by Kai Vöckler with Friedrich Heckmann and
Matthias Schulze-Böing. For the photo spreads, the DAM has commissioned photographers like Kiên Hoàng Lê who
has contributed a report on the Dong Xuan Center.
The exhibition “Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country” has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the
Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety.
