MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Students, Parents and Friends
Ein gutes neues Jahr an alle!
We had to cancel the performance by the
Galli Theatre at Christmas time due to a
snow storm. I am happy to announce that
we were able to reschedule the performance and the Galli Theater event will take
place on February 15th.
Several new students have joined us for the
second semester and we welcome them to
our school community and hope, that they
enjoy studying German and making new
friends.
Academics
In December several of our students participated in a new version of the AATG
(American Association of German Teachers)
test. I am pleased to announce that everyone who participated passed the test. Congratulations to all students!
Ms. Denicola, our Kindergarten teacher, was
invited to the Westwood Public Library topresent a winter program.
Several students from Mrs. Kaefer’s class
took the last part of the DSD II test
(Deutsches Sprachdiplom ) on January 11th.
We are awaiting the results.

Message from the Principal
Safety
We need parent volunteers to sit at the
front door to provide an extra measure of
safety for our students. Please sign up for
one session while your son/ daughter is in
class!! Sign-up sheets are at the front door,
or call 201-825-9770 to sign up.
Bagels
We need volunteers to donate bagels on
Saturday during the school year. We need
two families to sign up for each Saturday.
The money collected from selling the bagels
will go to our children’s library. The library
provides an opportunity for each student to
bring home a book for the week.
Summer
It is not too soon to plan for the summer.
The GLSC (German Language School Conference) of which we are a member school has
again planned a trip to Germany for children
and adults. Two of our students joined them
last year and had a wonderful time. For
more information please call me at 201 825
9770 or check out the program information
on page 7 in this newsletter.

DIE POST
My favorite teacher at New York University
by Barbara Lester
I was delighted to recently learn that Professor Friedrich Ulfers was awarded the distinguished
“Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit” of the Federal Republic of Germany. I had the opportunity to attend several of his classes during my graduate studies at NYU, and I had the good fortune of having Professor Ulfers as one of my advisors. Combined scope of his knowledge and his
down to earth approach to teaching and dealing with his students made him a favorite professor.
and he was one of my advisors.

Homestay Program in Germany
The German Language School Conference (GLSC) is the national umbrella organization for private German language
schools in the United States. As in past years the GLSC is organizing a homestay summer program from
July 12 – August 2, 2014
The homestay program for children is designed for 12 through 16-year olds who have studied German for one or
more years. The host school is the Isolde-Kurz-Gymnasium in Reutlingen, Germany.
The GLSC Children Program is a member of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP).
Students use German in a German-speaking environment every day, living with carefully screened host families. The
American group also prepares a "show and tell report" as part of its ambassadorial mission. Journals are kept during
daily contact with the chaperones. The participants attend school with their host brothers or sisters in Reutlingen, enjoy local events and travel as a group. The program includes a Rhine River cruise with a castle excursion, visits to the
Gutenberg Museum Print Shop in Mainz, the Roman side of Cologne and other places of interest for teenagers. As a
special treat the group travels to Freiburg in the Black Forest at the end of their study-travel three-week experience.
•
Cost $2,600.00, including all expenses and airfare from New York. Charges are subject to changes in the exchange
