Hainan Provincial Airlines Company began as a small regional carrier in May 1993 and has since transformed itself into the HNA Group. It is one of the fastest-growing, most diverse enterprises in China today, with global interests in aviation, hotels, logistics, finance, property and retail as well as tourism. By 2012, the Group’s annual turnover was over RMB120 billion (US$17.5 billion) with 100,000 employees world-wide. Mr. Chen Feng, chairman of HNA Group, was tasked with setting up the original airline and has been instrumental in overseeing the Group’s development ever since. Can you outline the key drivers behind the corporate culture of HNA Group and how these translate to the business operations? We are seeing the arrival of “the China era”. HNA became a world-class enterprise by upholding the essence of traditional Chinese culture, as well as grasping the most advanced Western science and technology. In the 20 years since its foundation, HNA has integrated this corporate culture into its strategy of development and implementation, creating a modern enterprise system based on innovation and the optimization of the social environment. With its reorganization, HNA is looking beyond Hainan Island to establishing a presence throughout China and into global markets. Can you please give me some idea on the growth strategy of the group—diversification into new business areas via mergers and acquisitions (M&As), for example? HNA is constantly improving its business model to build on its core competitiveness and become a world-class enterprise of excellence with three main pillars: air travel, logistics and financial services. How has the group grown from its origins to the current global carrier? HNA has been working on establishing a global presence for some time: overseas financing has laid the cornerstone for it to achieve this goal. From the outset, HNA has looked to acquire shareholdings in foreign enterprises and access international capital markets in order to develop the company. HNA views Hong Kong as the bridgehead for its international expansion. In 2006, HNA invested in Hong Kong Airlines and Hong Kong Express Airways as a first step toward expanding overseas business. HNA acquired Mytechnic of Turkey in November 2010 and in 2011 bought Hong Thai Travel of Hong Kong, and took an equity interest in Caissa Touristic. In 2012, HNA established African World Airlines in Ghana and acquired AigleAzur of France. In the logistics sector, in September 2010 HNA acquired Offshore Heavy Transport (OHT) of Norway, the world’s second biggest semi-submersible company, and Fairstar Heavy Transport of the Netherlands. In 2011 it acquired Turkey’s ACT Airlines. In the financial services sector, HNA acquired the Allco aircraft leasing business of Australia in 2010, and the Norway-listed GTB. In 2011 it bought GE SEACO of the U.S. The company has successfully laid foundations for a world-class leasing group. the As Chairman of the HNA Group, can you outline your managerial philosophy? Since its foundation, HNA has set up its corporate culture and management philosophy to uphold the essence of traditional Chinese culture, as well as grasping the most advanced Western science and technology. The core concepts of HNA’s culture include: benefiting human happiness and world peace as the common ideal; the belief that God blesses the good; that we should take our own path and be master of our destiny; that we have the common, public pursuit of participation, achievement, recognition and sharing; integrity, performance and innovation. -WALL STREET JOURNAL- (19 Apr 2013) Hainan Airlines Honored as SKYTRAX Five-Star Airline BEIJING, April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- On April 22nd, Hainan Airlines Co., Ltd. It is the largest privately owned air transport company in China and the fourth largest airline in China. Hainan Airlines operate a fleet of 113 aircraft, comprising a mix of narrowbody (Boeing 737 type) and widebody (A330/A340) planes, with 10 Boeing 787 aircraft due to delivery in 2013/2014. -AIRLINEQUALITY- (25 Apr 2013) HNA revenue set to soar as company reaches forthe sky China's fourth-largest airline, HNA Group Co, expects annual revenue to soar to more than $70 billion by 2020, its chairman said on Sunday. In 2011, the group acquired GE SeaCo, the world's fifth-largest container-leasing enterprise, for $1.05 billion, its largest overseas deal. The group, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in April, aims to flyinto the top 100 on the Fortune Global 500 list, said Chen Feng, chairman of the group. It also purchased a 48 percent stake last year in Aigle Azur, the second-largest airline in France. "Acquisitions boost our internationalization strategy," Chen said. The annual revenue of the 100th-biggest company was $76 billion, according to Fortune magazine's list in 2012. "Our long-term target is to make the top 50 on the list by 2030," Chen added. HNA Group earned 120 billion yuan ($19.46 billion) in revenue in2012, up 44 percent year-on-year, and its total assets reached 500billion yuan in 2012. "The global financial crisis has presented opportunities," Chen said. According to media reports, HNA was interested in purchasing a 35 percent stake in Cargolux Airlines International SA, one of Europe's largest all-cargo airlines, in 2012. But HNA denied any plans for that acquisition. The group's overseas assets continue growing, despite the bleak global outlook. An unnamed official from the group said the companies may have been in exploratory contact. Overseas assets accounted for more than 21 percent of the group's total, contributed 10percent to the group's annual revenue in 2012 and will soon account for about 40 percent ofthe group's revenue, said Tan Xiangdong, a director of HNA Group. "Many foreign companies approach us for a deal, but we choose what companies we will buy," Chen said. Acquisitions over the last two years have boosted assets. The target companies must be able to help improve HNA's competitiveness and expand its market share, he said. In addition, the companies must be able to be integrated into HNA, not just in business terms but also in culture, he said. Aigle Azur is a good example, as it helped HNA acquire a new Paris-Beijing route operated by the French airline. "We expect to launch the Paris-Beijing route this year, as we are only waiting for approval to fly in Russian airspace," said Wang Yingming, president of Hainan Airlines Co Ltd, the aviationsubsidiary of HNA Group. The company also said the return of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft will help expand its global network. The Dreamliner was back in the air on Sunday after a three-month grounding for battery problems. "The aircraft will fly in China in two months," said Chen Wenli, a director of HNA Group. The company ordered 10 Boeing 787 aircraft which new aircraft will work on its Beijing-Chicago route, due to be launched in September. "The Seattle and Toronto routes also may use the Dreamliner," Chen Wenli said. -CHINA DAILY- (01 May 2013) SKYTRAX zeichnet Hainan Airlines auf Pressekonferenz in Peking zum dritten Mal als Fünf-Sterne-Fluggesellschaft aus Peking (ots/PRNewswire) - Am 22.
