Course content As the rising superpower of the twenty‑first century, China poses major social, economic and political challenges to Europe. To address these challenges, it is of primary importance to create a knowledge base of the new urban culture, consumerism and globalization. The economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping have set in motion an unprecedented consumer revolution, entailing both crisis and transformation in a postsocialist society bent on the pursuit of prosperity. This course investigates China’s new media—in particular the “Second Channel” press, art scene and cybersphere—during the post‑Deng era (1997‑present). It focuses on the analysis of new urban culture in the area of tension between government censorship and China’s new culture of consumption. Concepts such as global vs. local, official and unofficial, glocalisation, culture of consumption and political dissent invite comparison with the organization of other cultures outside China. Course structure The course will take place in four six‑hour sessions. Workshops include group work and group presentations. Contextual Studies are considered part of Contact Learning; thus, taking part properly implies regular attendance. It is the studentsʹ own responsibility to ensure that there is no timetable clash between the courses they have chosen. Course literature An Online Reader with Key Readings and Additional Reading Materials will be provided on Studynet 2.0.
