This i s the Ensemble's f i r s t v i s i t to North America. http://newprairiepress.org/gdr/vol12/iss2/3 DOI: 10.4148/gdrb.v12i2.769 14 CONFERENCES THE GDR TODAY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY The c o n f e r e n c e " E a s t Germany Today: People, P r o b l e m s , P r o g r e s s , " A p r i l 2 2 - 2 4 , 1 9 8 6 , was a p r o d u c t i o n o f t h e German f a c u l t y a t t h e U n i v e r s i t y of Kentucky. C o - s p o n s o r s were the L e x i n g t o n Woman's C l u b , t h e l o c a l U n i t e d N a t i o n s O r g a n i z a t i o n , and t h e C e n t r a l Kentucky C o u n c i l on Peace and J u s t i c e , w i t h a d d i t i o n a l funding from t h e Kentucky H u m a n i t i e s C o u n c i l . The c o n f e r e n c e was o r i g i n a l l y i n t e n d e d t o be a p u b l i c i n t r o d u c t i o n o f C h r i s t o p h H e i n , who was to v i s i t f r o m t h e GDR, a n d t h e s t a r t o f c o m m u n i t y o u t r e a c h programs. Because o f b u r e a u c r a t i c c o m p l i c a t i o n s from b o t h governments, H e i n was not a b l e t o a t t e n d , b u t i t i s h o p e d t h a t he w i l l be i n L e x i n g t o n f o r A p r i l , 1987. The c o n f e r e n c e began w i t h t h e reminiscences o f K e n t u c k y - b o r n John Sherman Cooper, the f i r s t U.S. a m b a s s a d o r t o t h e GDR. His presentation c e r t a i n l y r e v e a l e d how f a r U.S. p o l i c y and p r e p a r a t i o n o f i t s d i p l o m a t i c c o r p s has come s i n c e the 1970's. Some p r o g r e s s h a s b e e n made f r o m t h e d a y s when u n i n f o r m e d n o n - G e r m a n s p e a k e r s were a t t h e c o n t r o l s . The a c a d e m i c p a r t o f t h e c o n f e r e n c e began the next day, and d e a l t w i t h some o f the i s s u e s o f C o l d War m e n t a l i t y and m i s i n f o r m a t i o n t h a t A m b a s s a d o r C o o p e r ' s t a l k h a d b r o u g h t o u t . Our f i v e c o n f e r e n c e s p e a k e r s , a l l e x p e r t s on t h e GDR, gave i n f o r m e d and i n t e r e s t i n g t a l k s on the following topics: R o b e r t G r e e n b e r g on h e a l t h c a r e s y s t e m s f o r mothers and c h i l d r e n ; P a t r i c i a Herminghouse on t r e n d s i n women's l i t e r a t u r e as e x p r e s s i o n o f s o c i a l c o n c e r n s ; Nancy L a u c k n e r on peace and n u c l e a r i s s u e s i n l i t e r a t u r e ; M a r i l y n Rueschemeyer on work, m a r r i a g e and f a m i l y l i f e ; and C h r i s t o p h Schmauch on t h e c h u r c h e s and r e l i - 2
