Os Centros Ciência Viva têm como principal objectivo a divulgação da cultura
científica e tecnológica junto da população portuguesa.
Distribuídos por todo o território nacional, os Centros Ciência Viva são
casas de ciência e convidam os visitantes de todas as idades a participar em
actividades e exposições interactivas. Fazem parte da Rede Nacional de
Centros Ciência Viva do Ministério da Ciência Tecnologia e Ensino Superior,
em gestão conjunta como Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Ciência Viva, em
colaboração com as Câmaras Municipais e com forte interacção com a
comunidade científica.
Os Centros Ciência Viva representam a moderna museologia da ciência e
são espaços dinâmicos de conhecimento e lazer, onde se estimula a
curiosidade científica e o desejo de aprender.
Ouse entrar no Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal – Mina de Ciência, onde a Geologia, a Química, a Física,
a Biologia e as Ciências do Virtual se juntam, tirando partido do enquadramento social e patrimonial
desta antiga aldeia mineira.
Não são de cobre, prata ou ouro os minérios que aqui tem. Nesta mina explora-se ciência e extrai-se
conhecimento, sempre com a interactividade na ponta dos dedos. Os visitantes poderão descobrir
e explorar alguns dos mais fascinantes fenómenos do mundo da ciência e da tecnologia, com dezenas
de experiências interactivas. Também pode experimentar a descida virtual à mina, com recurso à tecnologia
de visualização imersiva em 3D.
The main purpose of the Ciência Viva Centres Network is to spread scientific
and technological culture among the wider Portuguese public.
There are Ciência Viva Centres all over Portugal, and they invite people of
all ages to join in the activities and interactive exhibitions. They belong to the
National Network of Ciência Viva Centres of the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Higher Education, run jointly with the Pavilion of Knowledge –
Ciência Viva in collaboration with local authorities. The scientific community
is also strongly involved.
The Ciência Viva Centres are examples of modern scientific museology.
They are dynamic places of learning and fun, where scientific curiosity and
the desire to learn are stimulated.

Dare walking into the Lousal Ciência Viva Centre, where Geology, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Virtual
Sciences get together, taking advantage of the social and economic setting of this old mining village.
The ore found here is neither copper nor silver or gold. In this mine, one explores science and extracts
knowledge, always with interactivity at the fingertips. Here the visitors may discover and explore some
of the most fascinating phenomena of the world of science and technology, through dozens
of interactive experiences. You can also try the virtual descent into the mine, by means of immersive
3D visualization technology.

O Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal – Mina de Ciência está instalada num edifício outrora associado à actividade
mineira e onde funcionavam o Gabinete de Geologia, o Armazém do Óleo, a Casa do Ponto, a Casa das
Lanternas, a Casa dos Equipamentos de Trabalho e o Balneário. O edifício sofreu algumas adaptações para
funcionar como espaço de divulgação da cultura científica e tecnológica, dispondo hoje de diversas
valências: áreas expositivas, módulos interactivos, gruta virtual, laboratório, cybercafé, auditório, espaços
recreativos e miradouro.

The Mine of Science – Lousal Ciência Viva Centre has been set up in a building that was associated with
mining activity in the past and where the Geology Office, the Oil Storage Room, the Time-keeping Room, the
Lantern Room, the Working Equipment Room and the Bathhouse were located. The building has been adapted
in order to function as a space for the dissemination of scientific and technological culture and today it offers
a variety of functions: exhibition areas, interactive exhibits, a virtual mine, a laboratory, a cybercafé, an
auditorium, recreational spaces and a viewpoint.

MINÉRIOS, MISTÉRIOS E OUTROS ASSUNTOS SÉRIOS.
Olhe à sua volta. Tudo é feito de alguma coisa. Várias
matérias-primas têm origem vegetal mas a maioria
provém da crosta terrestre, a fina camada externa do
nosso planeta. Ao longo da história da Terra, processos
geológicos geraram concentrações desses minerais
na crosta, tornando viável a exploração económica dos
metais aí contidos. São esses os nossos minérios.
VIGILANTES DA NATUREZA. Sabia que alguns seres
vivos podem ser usados como “vigilantes da
Natureza”? O seu estudo permite-nos compreender
os problemas de poluição das minas e ajuda-nos
a recuperá-las. Podem usar-se os líquenes como
bioindicadores, já que eles nos revelam a qualidade
do ar. Observe as plantas que toleram viver
em solos com elevadas concentrações de metais.
AQUI HÁ BRUXAS – LABORATORIUM. Poções ou
soluções? Acções ou reacções? Superstições
ou demonstrações? No laboratório de Química vai
descobrir as diferenças entre “magia” e “ciência”.
E a varinha de condão é a sua própria mão. Como
por magia vai poder transformar o mundo num
outro. Pode observar ou intervir. Afinal aí estão
elas! Não são bruxas... são as reacções químicas!
ORE, MYSTERY AND MUCH MORE. Look around.
Everything is made of something. Some raw-materials
are plant-derived but most came out from the Earth
crust, the thin cover of our planet. Metals are not an
exception. During Earth’s history, some geological
processes concentrated a number of these minerals in
the crust, which turned the exploitation of the contained
metals economically viable. Those are our ores.
NATURE WATCHERS. Do you know that some living
organisms can be used as “Nature Watchers”?
They help us to better understand the problems
of mine pollution and, at the same time, help us
restoring degraded ecosystems.
WATCH FOR WITCHES!! -LABORATORIUM. Potions
or Solutions? Actions or Reactions? Superstitions
or Demonstrations? In the Chemistry lab you will
discover some differences between “magic” and
“science”. And the magic wand is your own hand.
With a magic touch, we can change one world into
another. So, here they are! Not the witches...
but the chemical reactions!

I CYBERCAFÉ I CYBERCAFE
Além da exposição permanente, o Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal – Mina de Ciência possui um auditório
com capacidade para 60 pessoas para exibição de documentários e realização de encontros, conferências,
seminários ou palestras. Já no espaço do laboratório é possível realizar diversas actividades experimentais
programadas, de acordo com o nível etário dos visitantes.
Outras actividades complementam a oferta deste Centro Ciência Viva, nomeadamente os jogos
educativos “Quem Tem Olho P´rós Minerais?” e “Ciência Viva On The Rocks”, dedicados ao fascinante mundo
dos minerais e das rochas.
Neste espaço cada visitante poderá navegar na internet e aceder ao e-mail. A sua utilização é gratuita,
sendo o horário de funcionamento idêntico ao do Centro.
Besides the permanent exhibition, the Lousal Ciência Viva Centre also has an auditorium with
a capacity of 60 seats for presentation of documentaries and organization of meetings, conferences,
seminars or lectures. In the laboratory visitors may carry out various experimental activities, programmed
according to their age group.
Other activities complement what this Ciência Viva Centre has to offer, i.e. educational games such
as “Who has an eye for minerals?” and “Ciência Viva On The Rocks”, dedicated to the fascinating world
of minerals and rocks.
In this space the visitor may navigate the Internet and check his/her e-mail. The cybercafe’s opening hours,
during which the Internet access is provided free of charge, is the same as the Centre’s.

Industrial - Lousal”. VINDO DO ALGARVE. A partir do Algarve tome a A2-Norte até à saída de Aljustrel. Siga em
direcção a Santiago/Sines. Siga, à direita, a indicação “Mimosa”. Cerca de 10 kms depois, vire à esquerda na
indicação “Arqueologia Industrial - Lousal”.
COMING FROM PORTO OR LISBON. From Porto, take the A1 highway towards Lisbon. From Lisbon, take the A2
highway and take the exit for Beja/Ferreira. Head towards Ourique/Faro. Continue for about 9 km and turn
right at the sign “Arqueologia Industrial - Lousal”. COMING FROM ALGARVE. Follow in the direction
Santiago/Sines. Turn right at the sign “Mimosa”. Continue for about 10 km and turn left at the sign
