Mercedes Lackey
Die amerikanische Fantasy-Autorin Mercedes Ritchie Lackey wurde am 24. Juni 1950 in Chicago
geboren. Ihren Spitznamen "Misty" erhielt sie bei ihrer Arbeit in einer Tagesstätte für immigrierte
Arbeiterkinder. Aus "Miss Mercedes" wurde zunächst "Miss Dee" und dann "Misty". Ihr Studium der
Biologie an der Purdue University in Indiana schloß sie 1972 ab. Sie schlug sich mit zahlreichen
verschiedenen Jobs durch, unter anderem als Kellnerin, Sicherheitsbeauftrage und Modell, bevor
sie als Schriftstellerin Erfolg hatte und das Schreiben 1990 zu ihrem Beruf machen konnte.
Mittlerweile ist sie zur Vielschreiberin geworden. Bekannt wurde sie vor allem durch ihre Romane
aus ihrer Fantasy-Welt Velgarth und dem Königreich Valdemar. Oft arbeitete sie mit anderen
bekannten Autoren wie Marion Zimmer Bradley, Anne McCaffrey oder C. J. Cherryh zusammen.
Neben Romanen schreibt sie auch Songtexte für die Musikrichtung "Science Fiction Folk Music".
Mercedes Lackey lebt heute mit ihrem Mann Larry Dixon, mit dem sie auch zusammen arbeitet, in
der Nähe von Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sie ist Mitglied im Amerikanischen Verband der Raubvögel,
engagiert sich in ihrer Freizeit für Wildvögel und beherbergt selber einen ganzen Schwarm von
Papageien.
